I made an adapter to put a VW TDI engine in a Nissan D21 truck. If I did it again, I would make transfer pins that thread into the blind holes, clamp two places over the pins, partially marking those locations, tap the other location with a hammer, and then this could be drilled. The way I did it, I individually did each hole, making lots of on and offs.
The correct technique for drilling holes with machine tools (drill press, lathe, whatever) is to pilot drill with a drill that's just a bit bigger than the 'chisel' (or center non-cutting web) of the final sized drill, then drill to finished size.
There are a few reasons for doing this: firstly, engaging the full width of the drill's cutting edges helps keep it centered so it doesn't curve off course or make a slightly triangular 'lobed' hole. Secondly, the rake angle of the drill's cutting edges varies from the middle (where it is very low, often negative) to the outside (where it is very high, often 30-45 degrees). As a result the outer parts of the drill are weaker, they benefit from having the inner parts to add resistance and prevent them taking too much load all at once. And finally, a related issue. If you make your pilot hole too big the drill may act like a self tapping screw and violently 'self-feed' into the hole, resulting in either a spinning part of doom or damage to the drill, depending on the relative strength of their respective clamping systems. Brass is notorious for this (which is why people often recommend 'dubbing' the edges to reduce their rake angle if you're drilling it) but it can easily happen in steel as well if you make your pilot hole too large.
This type of swap has been on my mind for a while. Not specifically the trans/motor combo but the swapping in a hyper mile transplant to combat these horrible fuel prices. Thanks for the ride along on this and can’t wait for the next one!
You know the guys is smart by looking at his insight in the shop.

for anyone watching and thinking about adaptor plates (perhaps it not a thing in the states I have never seen or worked on a saturn) but here in the UK most all FWD gearboxes are aligned with dowels its these dowels that set the correct location of gearbox and engine, the bolts are usually rather loose fitting. when making adaptors this is where you need to focus for alignment.
I love when a digital precision tool (3d printer, laser cutter, CNC) can make imprecise tools precise. Making templates and one off specialty tools should be a big selling point but i dont see it talked about or shown off nearly as much as it should be. Glad to see how the 3d printer made this project easier.

I love your comments , your sense of humor and how technical you are.
Man that's quite the puzzle! Props on figuring all that out, way over my head!
For clutch clearance, all you need to do is maintain the same block to flywheel face dimension as the factory. On your Saturn the front face of the flywheel sets *into* the transmission .674". Put another way, the flywheel is .674" proud of the engine block mating surface. As long as this dimension is the same with your adapter, the clutch will work fine.
This thing is gonna have torque for days, I can't wait to see this thing rolling coal down the road. An absolute masterpiece.

That “center” drill bit is for cutting a tapered opening in the end of stock for a live/dead center to sit in on a lathe. While they do work well for establishing a straight pilot hole, usually mills will use a spotting drill to establish a good start for a larger drill.

Great job and thanks for sharing. Dowel center points also work instead of printing the 3d printer transfer points. They come in American Standard and metric sizes. A little masking tape wrapped around the center points works if you need a tighter fit. Like the plexiglass idea. 👍

Using a protractor to mark out intersecting cycloids from the bellhousing holes will give you the relative shaft position without ever needing to actually measure anything.
How does that work?
@@legomasterj - You're drawing an arc that is in relation to each hole. Set the protractor on the equipment and then draw the corresponding arc on the template. You don't know where on the arc the shaft is but it doesn't matter because all your arcs will find that point for you where they intersect. No actual measurements needed. The distance from the protractors point to its tip, for each hole, IS your measurement.

Hi, followup to the last video, I plan to publish the full library of transmission adapter plates that I have. I am acquiring the entire library of templates that belonged to Electro Automotive, since they are no longer in business. I used to manufacture adapter plates and hubs for them 12-16 years ago and I have quite a few existing CAD files. I plan to create a Github repo to contain these drawings.
That would be an awesome resource for many home brewed swaps. I'm sure it will be much appreciated.
@@robotcantina8957 Love all the videos, JIMBO... congrats on 103k subscribers....👍👍👍
Do tell us more!!
@@PatrickKQ4HBD I need to do some cleanup of the CAD files to make sure they are presentable, then I can export DXFs for sharing. I used BobCAD back then, so the source files are not "standard" format. I need to scan a bunch of drawings of hubs and assembly views. Then I need to scan the patterns, stitch them together, vectorize them, and convert them into scale drawings. At the end I developed a workflow using a B size scanner to scan the full size adapter and convert that into a drawing. Unfortunately all of the original computer files that EA had are gone, so only my copies remain. The adapter patterns are 1/3rd of the equation, the other 2/3rds are the crankshaft hub drawings and assembly drawings that show fitup and depthing dimensions.

For every meaningful goal, focus on the process instead of the outcome. Don’t get attached to the results you expect. Life is not a win-or-lose game. Everything is a learning process.
These are so much fun to watch.
This is a lot more measuring for the template then I'd have done tbh. You can establish center after the bolt pattern is established. Lots of easy ways to transfer a bolt pattern and bellhousing shape. I would also have skipped the plastic template, but it makes for good visual examples of what is happening, so I like it in the video.

I legitimately probably would have never thought to use plexiglass for mock-up purposes. Genius.
This makes all kinds of fabrication a lot quicker. My mind was basically stuck in transfer punch and/or cardstock mode for some reason.
Obviously cardstock is great for just about everything but there's definitely a time and place for a see-through version. Cheers.
Nice trail 90 in the back!

As always love the work jimbo keep ‘em coming.
your method of creating the adapter plate in stages with templates is an awesome idea. i have a couple of similar projects on my list that have been in a holding pattern waiting for me to figure out how to move forward on them without it costing me a kidney. using polycarbonate to create a see through template was genius! i had been trying other methods unsuccessfully and had about given up and was thinking of looking into DIY surgical methods to raise capitol in order to move forward with them. with my limited geometry and algebraic skills, this seems to be a more viable option and much less painful. my kidneys thank you! i would really have hated to split up the set, i've had them kicking around for over half a century now, and i'm sure they would've been sad to be separated.
Putting a project in a holding pastern is sometime necessary while you build the knowledge to make the best choices in order to successfully finish. I'm glad you found value in the plexiglass method. it sure beats doing a lot of complex measuring.

I'm really digging this project. I love watching diesel swaps. Especially with a typical heavy-duty and light-duty engine like the Kubota. With that said, I'd love to see you add a turbo and intercooler in it later on. Nice work my friend!! 👌
This will not work well the fuel pump is calibrated to run at a steady rpm ie full throttle all the time and the hydrostatic transmission that these engine are connected to do all the work of controlling the speed of the machine
Same if you use a bigger diesel engine meant for a stationary machine the fuel pump is not made for a road car and need to be swapped with the road going fuel pump counterpart for any kind of drivability
Still want to see the outcome this will be interesting
@@legros731 there are some limitations with the fuel pump but it is a Bosch P-pump so it can be tweaked. All depends on how much boost you can put to it. Also, it's not being connected to a hydrostatic system. It's being connected to a manual transmission. But yeah, definitely interested how it will do.
@@iceman45ification1 not saying it cannot be modified but you need to know what you are doing or the engine will go boom
But if you want to ad turbo Kubota already made turbo version and he could even upgrade to a 4 cylinder if it doesn't have enough power same exact engine with one additional cylinder
