I would sign up for a mechanic class like these projects in a heartbeat.
Why do you need a class? Just go out in your garage and do it. Nothing is hard. You'll never learn anything unless you just start.
@@James-on1vy Some people do better in classes. I can self teach but I also enjoy a class here and there. There is also the comradery aspect.
@@James-on1vy It's good not to blow myself up, or rip my arm/fingers off or whatnot. Agree it's possible to learn solo, but having someone there to make sure I am not too stupid when I first start may allow me to save some medical bills. (Replaced general you with I to admit that it is me who needs the basics)
I remember as a teenager I always had an interest in cars but didn't know much of how to work on them. I eventually went to trade school for another mechanical field. I learned how to troubleshoot electrical. Once RUclips came on the scene I started watching alot of auto mechanics showing how to work on vehicles. Now I am comfortable working on my own cars and repairing them when they break. Bottom line is keep watching channels like this one, Eric the car guy, and Mustie1. It's basically free schooling for being a mechanic. 🙂
@classic Pontiac37 I'd recommend Fitzees Fabrication for any kind of rust repair if you haven't seen it. The guy is a great teacher.
With RUclips, I can't see people paying for a class. Watch a video, go out and do it. It's easy. From software engineering, to fixing a sink, to building an FIA legal roll cage, it's free. People are just lazy and need an excuse to go out and do something in my opinion.
I love that when you reach a small issue in your projects, you actually try to fix the issues instead of making everyone "wait until the next video" while still leaving the major parts of the progress being done for a separate episode

Turning up the governor would definitely take care of the speed issue, although, I'd be a bit worried about fuel delivery too. You may need a bigger fuel pump. Can't wait to see how it does with a turbo in it. On another note, congrats on your 100K subscriptions!!
Yeah a bigger lift pump like diesel Mercedes use is probably needed, some governor tuning and pump tuning and a turbo with intercooler would probably get around 100 foot pounds

Just discovered this project. What a cool thing! I've got a Scag lawn mower with the larger D1105 engine and it is FANTASTIC.
Great stuff!
A couple suggestions...
Lose the paper inline filter back at the tank. They aren't rated for diesel and have very little surface area to be used as a primary filter. I use a Wix 33972 all-plastic filter for the pre-position. Its coarse at 50 microns, so it doesn't wad up quickly but will protect the pump from large debris.
Under the hood, get a Kubota fuel pedestal from a U17 or U35 excavator, part #52200-26750 That will let you run a Wix 33390 final filter which is common and has lots of area and a 10-micron rating to keep your injectors happy.
Don't expect much from that little permanent magnet alternator. They are only about 20 amps, I believe but are fairly reliable. It's not hard to mount up a 1 wire alternator or something from a Kubota machine to get into the 40-60 amp range which is more like what you'll need if you were to turn everything on at once.
Thanks for the heads up on the filter. We did a video on the little alternator a few months ago and indeed thay make about 20 amps. 20 amps should be plenty for this rig. Keep in mind we put the car together for experiments and we will not be driving it at night.

@@robotcantina8957 Cool beans!
I also noticed your mechanical fuel pump block off plate. If you have any issues with fueling at or near the max power/redline, you can easily add a stock mechanical lift pump to get fuel through the system quicker and keep the injection pump filled. Many factory Kubota machines use the same setup, despite only needing to cover a couple feet of distance and often even with a slight gravity feed effect. Tank to prefilter/water catch, then an electric lift pump, then to the mechanical lift pump, then the final fuel filter and then the injection pump.

Hope you get to take some me-time to relax and rejuvenate in the midst of this hectic winter. Cheers!
We engine swapped a snowmobile with a similar engine, a cat C1.1. We ran into the same problems with gearing and the governor. I ended up using a servo to run the fuel rack and a PID loop to run it all, cause the mechanical governor just wouldn’t cut it. If you do that make sure you don’t over rev it cause it will bend a push rod lol.
Congrats on 100k!
Re:”iT’s To SmAlL!” I’d like to remind them that you were looking at getting a D480 two cylinder diesel before I offered you the 722.
As far as governor goes, it was a reefer unit engine, and was connected to the compressor via a clutch belt drive system. They had more than enough power to play with, so they derated the engine to increase its lifespan I imagine.
About shutting the engine off...
I work as a Microcar mechanic, these are little cars in Europe that you don't need a full license for and use a variety of small diesel engines, one of which is a Kubota Z402 which has a very similar injection pump. On these microcars there is a solonoid which actuates the shut-off switch and it's a really simple system.
This is probably the same in the small tractors that use this or a similar Kubota engine.
It would not be a Robot Cantina video without a car struggling to make it to 60mph.
Best wishes from the UK!

A turbo and manifold for the D-1105T theoretically should work on your 722. But it’ll need some more fuel, and with that comes the need for a pyrometer, it’s much easier to put one in a manifold on a table than on an engine with the turbo already mounted, I wish someone would have told me that before I attempted it.
I'd say you figured out that the radiator is plenty big if it was able to send the temp gauge needle back to stone cold. I think you'll make a little more power with some heat in the engine too once you sort out the thermostat! Congrats on the 100k award!
For the fuel cutoff lever, I would use a 12v solenoid that pulls it to the RUN position when energized, and a return spring that pulls it the other way when the key is turned off. This way it can be fully operated with the key instead of adding some choke-type pull/push cable on the cabin.
That’s a good idea

IDK why but I love it, those engines are like super small tanks.
Diesels won’t generate much heat until you put a load on it. Get some fuel burning! Oh, and you have to keep the glow plugs hot until you are actually cranking the engine. They cool off very fast. Love the experiment though. Very well made video. Kudos.

Jimbo, its clear to me you're applying several things you've learned on the insight on this car and it has made this series even more enjoyable!
I can't wait to see what kind of tricks you pull out of your sleeve when you turbocharge this engine, especially for wastegate/boost control and pressure relief. I'm sure you already have tons of ideas.
I am going to give you some brain waves I had for adding vacuum the brake booster that I am sure you've already considered. First, electric vacuum pumps will work great for creating a vacuum source, however, it would be an idea to get a vacuum canister to supply the vacuum to the booster. LOTS of forced induction cars use this, and even some cars use this for locks, 4-wheel drive actuators, and even headlights and wipers/cowl actuators(Damn you GM and the C3!). If you need any help sourcing OEM components I would be happy to help. There are also belt driven vacuum pumps that have been used on a lot of late model vehicles. I think this would be the most reliable vacuum source as they are 100% mechanical.
Secondly, every vacuum brake booster usually has a check valve build in or has one in the supply. Provided the booster is in good shape, this would potentially reduce the need for constant vacuum, just something to keep in mind.
Keep cranking out videos, can't get enough of these!
The VW ALH diesel's vacuum pump runs directly off of the camshaft, no belt involved. I didn't realize that was unusual!
@@ThisIsReMarkable My 1976 Volvo had a camshaft-driven vacuum pump to guarantee enough assisted braking if the engine stalled. I think this feature was discontinued on later models.

early 2000 turbo vw/audi have a nice vacuum pump.
00-02 A6 with the 2.7t will be behind driver headlight next to ABS pump
00-05 jetta with the 1.8t will be sandwiched between the subframe and body next to driver's feet
it's normal for diesels to lose temp with airflow. even with a working thermostat. that's why they cover the radiator. 00-03 jetta TDI with manual trans actually have glow plugs for the coolant
Let's keep in mind that the power figures on Kubota's dyno tests are most likely rated from the crank and not from a gearbox in which some power is lost, but it's nothing that you can't work out next time. This is a great series and the silver play button award is well deserved.

Puutting the heater core in the cooling loop may do most of your winter engine cooling. You may need under hood valving to cut out the heater in summer. With all the other adaptations you are doing, this should be just one more. I would think about putting a battery keeper on it. adding the load of the generator may drain your currently limited engine power, never mind an electric cooling fan. It will be amazing to see the little engine working up where it should. Good luck.

The weirdest thing is to put the throttle to the floor, let it rev until it hits the governor, keep the throttle on the floor, push in the clutch and take your sweet old time to shift into another gear, let clutch out. Definitely a tractor! I had to add springs to the Kubota governor flyball unit to get it to see 3700 rpm. Mine was set at 1800 rpm to power a light tower. I used the engine mounted diaphragm fuel pump to provide vacuum to the brake master cylinder unit. Not bad, but way better than using 2 feet to push the brake lever. Keep up the good work!

In the New Year, never forget to thank to your past years because they enabled you to reach today! Without the stairs of the past, you cannot arrive at the future!
Adjusting the max governed rpm is simple and easy, but you will also have to shim the injection pump to bump the timing up for 3600 rpm operation. You will also have to adjust the torque screw, to give the engine more fuel per stroke. Also, that little electric fuel pump will supply plenty of fuel for the D722.
I put a Kubota V1405 in a 1980 Triumph Spitfire. Added a turbo, injection pump camshaft advance timer, shimming the pump timing, and adjusted all three fuel delivery screws to make this engine rev to 4000 rpm, and produce 80 hp with 22 pounds of boost.
Turbo diesel Spitfire.... lol. As I recall my '79 made about 55hp with the 1.5l iron lump under the bonnet.

It should be pretty easy to get most of those gauges to work, including the tach and temperature gauge. For the temperature gauge, just remove the temperature sender from the original engine, and I believe several manufacturers make converters that can read an alternator signal and generate a tach signal from it.

“When we fully understand the brevity of life, its fleeting joys and unavoidable pains; when we accept the facts that all men and women are approaching an inevitable doom: the consciousness of it should make us more kindly and considerate of each other. This feeling should make men and women use their best efforts to help their fellow travelers on the road, to make the path brighter and easier as we journey on. Don't only strive to be the change you want to see in the world, but also help all those around you see the world through commonalities of the heart so that they would want to change with you. This is how humanity will evolve to become better. This is how you can change the world. The language of the heart is mankind's main common language.”
I can see education is everywhere and many people were educated. But I realized that common sense is not that common.
on the front of the motor there is the fuel screw take it 1/4 turn richer and you will get 8hp-10hp more this engine had multiple power ratings all adjusted by the fuel and honestly you can go 3/4 turn anymore you run into area where EGT's become a bit of a issue and to go further you will need to turbo the motor and then you will be able to get way more than enough power to run 75mph or more.

Yes and no all mechanical diesel engines when loaded from a idle will puff a slight bit of soot its more when your 1/2 throttle or so and you give the beans does it throw soot and if soot goes away shortly after you give the beans to it again mechanical diesels have a mechanical fuel governance in the injection pump basically a puff of soot is normal if its a constant soot you got to much.
we used to do that with older Volkswagen TD engine! :) the important thing is to keep an eye on the EGT!
I believe that engine has what’s called a jerk pump! I don’t think there’s a provision for adjusting the fuel setting. You could pull the pump, and put larger plunger and barrels in it. What he’s talking about in the video is governer settings. Increasing the rpm’s. Differant thing. And even if you can adjust fuel. On that small of an engine, you can’t adjust too much. Minimal hp gain, lots of black smoke.
He is adding a turbo so the added fuel is needed and yes there is a fuel adjustment and just so you know that motor was sold in several different power outputs only difference was fuel delivery increase there is currently like 5-10 hp on the table just by upping fuel and once turbo is added well that # will double.
@@michaelnelson9140 watch the video I linked in my original post it shows step by step how to turn the fuel up so yes it is able to be adjusted.
You can get a shut-off solenoid for diesels. You can set it up to pull/hold with ignition power and when the circuit opens, the spring will shut off the pump. 😊
Back in the 60s, there was a company that would make adapters, so you could put almost any engine in any vehicle, a lot of folks put GM V-8s in the back of their Porsches, or Ford Pinto motors in the back of VW vans. The company was called crown adapters, and I believe they were located in California, My neighbor put a Ford V8 in the front of his Austin Healey 3000, that car was insanely fast, At the time old Healeys weren’t classic cars, Just an old car, So it wasn’t sacrilege to modify it
Congrats on 100k! I remember subscribing when your channel was at like 9k, man the channel has come a long way since then.
Keep up the great work👍
This series is awesome! I can’t wait to see the turbo install and what it can do. I would also love a series comparing this to a larger D1105 or D1305 to see the difference between engine sizes.
To the community of ROBOT CANTINA viewers at large 👍👍👍 Congratulations on a great year, and warm wishes to you and your family throughout the holiday season. It has been a pleasure reading all the great comments on this chat..👍👍
It LOOKS beautiful. it has a very 'factory' look to it. This is one of the cleanest engine swaps to date on this channel. You may not be getting full rated torque out of the engine. If you were able to get the car up past 45 MPH with the 420CC single cylinder engine, surely, this 20 HP 3-cylinder engine should achieve highway speeds. Granted, it won't have the quickest acceleration, but, it should top out just fine.
You should also know, that diesel engines are much more efficient than gasoline engines, owing to high compression, and no throttling losses. They simply don't heat up at idle the way a gasoline engine does, because, there's a lot of air coming through the intake, though, very little fuel. (Remember, there is NO throttle valve to restrict the intake air flow.) The intake airflow volume is almost enough to keep the engine from warming up on a cold day. The ONLY way to warm up a diesel, is to load it.
ROBOT CANTINA community and viewers==🤠May the holiday season fill your home with joy, your heart with love, and your life with laughter.
🤠🤠🤠It's been a pleasure getting to know you this year. May the holiday season bless you and your loved ones with joy and happiness. 👍
Today I close the door to the past, open the door to the future, take a deep breath, step on through and start a new chapter in my life.
Happy New Year~!
Love seeing stuff like this lol. I’d like to do a turbo 1.1 kubota swap into a neon just to see how it goes.
Congrats on the RUclips award!

I had a diesel VW RABBIT 30 years ago and the heater never got hot enough for Ohio winters but 50 mpg was great. Fifth gear was barely usable because of the lack of power .
