I can't help but think that Kubota engine, somehow mated to a Prius transaxle / motor/generator, with a pack of lithium ion cells would really be the cats pajamas of fuel economy, and ICE vehicle cabin heat / practicality for cold climates. It would also make for a decent standby power source in an emergency. Might have to upgrade the fuel cell, though. Happy 2023.
Happy New Year Jimbo! Glad you're feeling better and made it through the cold snap. While this is one of the best series on youTube, please make sure to take care of yourself and your family before anything else. All of us will wait an extra week (or 2, or 3, etc) to make sure you're at 100%. Wishing you the best for 2023!
Happy New year! Hopefully you all are feeling better. Sounds like you had a rough couple of weeks. You have come a long way since the insight. Thanks Jimbo, and helpers.
Thank you for a great 2022 and I am looking forward to what you bring us in 2023. BTW, I knew you would have covered off on the charging, you would have told us if you hadn't, plus we would have seen a video for the charging fix if a fix was required. 👍.
Happy New Year from Germany! I really like Your experiments. Doing something like You did is next to impossible here because we have SO MANY hoops to jump thru getting something street legal. No way the state would allow something like this being on the road- that´s why I really dig Your vids. Stay safe, stay healthy Jimbo!
Hey Jimbo, your charging system is actually working better than some OEM charging systems I've worked on! Some Chrysler vehicles (JK Jeeps, Chrysler/Dodge T&C/Caravan) have such undersized alternators that they can't even keep voltage above battery level with all the things in the car running! They installed an alternator smaller than the load, probably banking on 'eh it'll be close enough' and let me tell you it certainly is not. A 160 amp *rated* maximum alternator on a vehicle that uses about 160 amps does not work, it's like they forgot about voltage droop when everything gets hot. Have a safe and healthy start to your new year!
Awwww....more please. I only got two shovels of Cap"N Crunch into me and my bacon now sits cold and lonely in it's black cradle of seasoned cast iron. So sad...but then...it's still bacon, my Cap"n Crunch is not soggy and the coffee remains warm...inviting.
Happy New Year Jimbo! 5 minutes is kinda long to say "we were too hung over to edit but we are almost recovered now. Really can't wait to see the upcoming videos I'm sure you have planned!
I have always assumed the average car requires about 100 HP to maintain highway speeds. I'm continually impressed with your attempt to do it with so little HP.
Welcome back JimBo to the land of the living!! I’m glad you could join us and bless us with another video, even if it is a montage. Get well bud, we will be here when you get better!
I don't know what the others said about the alternator but *my* point was that it was unlikely the new smaller one was more efficient. You said you wanted to change it because it was too high a load on the engine but I think you're wrong as the load depends on how much current you draw. It's possible the first alternator was more efficient and would put less load on the engine whith a current draw of 20 A
We had a cold snap here in Coastal South Carolina, fortunately no power outage where I live. It actually got down to 18° and stayed below freezing for 4 days. Now we are back into the 60s and 70s.
Happy new year!!! Love what you are doing and all the great content. With your charging issues, if you lower the pulley size, it should over drive the alternator to increase your at idle voltage.
Jimbo! it’s good to hear back from you man. keep the videos coming. i’m always waiting on youtube sunday morning waiting for the video to drop. please get better!!!
I wasn't even expecting a video, people do need time off and it is New Year's. You're gettin' purdy good with that 3d what-a-ma-call-it, all them gauges and stuff. Happy New Year Jimbo keep warm. Maybe you should move up to our fine balmy country Canada here, less pipes breaking etc. Keep up the excellent content!
Hope everybody is feeling better now. We fared better in that nasty weather that hit right before Christmas. Just bitter cold and wind but no power outages here in Indiana. I don't think the wind chill reached -50F. Can't wait to see the next episode. Phil
Those gauges are awesome: super legible, cleanly mounted, reminiscent of the Back to the Future Delorean. Nice! Was the opening on your coffee making a nod to the Bad Obsession Motorsports video stylings? 👍🏼
a stock saturn alternator will pull 2-3 hp at full load, so if you mounted it to the kabota and just used it for the lights and blower, it would only be using 1/4 of it's capacity, I'd stick it on. when you add the turbo it'll be less relevenat
While I'm aware that this is just an experiment with this car, 20 amps is just barely adequate.. The blower motor pulls just as much if not more than that on high.. Even on lower settings it still pulls a pretty good chunk of amperage, and you couldn't possibly run the exterior lights while maintaining a proper voltage, then there is the little detail of the fact that automotive alternators unless specifically modified and/or built to do so, aren't really meant to produce more than about 50 or 60% of the rated amperage for more than 30 to 60 seconds.. while this alternator is adequate for your purposes, it's going to crap out at some point.. quite soon.. It did sit in storage for quite a while, and such a small alternator is intended for a piece of equipment that is going to run for many hours or days at a time.. Even the little two three and four cylinder diesels that are used in reefer units have at least a 50 or 70 amp alternator.. And they aren't really doing much except powering the controller, the fuel lift pump, and maybe some accessory lights on the trailer, a few trailers actually are set up to where the reefer unit will run all the lights on the trailer.. But that doesn't really pull much juice either.
Happy New Year Rose! AhHAH! See I seem to remember when the weather was nice and someone moved to Kansas, I warned him about how cold it gets here, even if he is from Michigan 🤣
65 190d had a 12 v 30 amp generator, car had huff air from Thermoking that used the engine for their reefers. Always kept up with charging even fog lights and wipers
Cmon Jimbo that coffee machine is slow n needs grid power. A small combination waterwheel/ solar/windgenerator attached to the roof downpipe should cover alternative natural power sources
All the best in the new year, Jimbo. My own work on Darwin has been successful and with the addition of a few things she should be ready for road tripping.
0:41 over 10 seconds, a coffee lover or an Italian suffers until he perishes with atrocious sufferings, to see an improbably horrendous rinse of exhausted coffee or, like seeing someone pissing after drinking at least 10 pints of beer! 😱 ... but ...make a good and strong serious coffee and after diluted with water on the side ... no? 😅 ...apart from this rape, you are a legend about what you do (I repeat, except coffee!) 🤣🤣🤣 Regards from Italy:)
Wasn’t this in Michigan before? I was thinking the car drove around on “proving grounds” in earlier episodes. That was funny, in a state of big auto mfrs. Hillbilly Proving Grounds? I dunno.
I would like to see you put a motorcycle engine on an automatic car transmission I've had the idea for my smart car and didn't know how to make it work
Happy New Year Jimbo. Me personaly I'm sick of people arguing about the alternator. And Jimbo is sick of the "Virus of unspecified origin" Take care and get well. We will wait.
Why do people in the comments assume Jimbo is such an idiot. Like he doesn't understand how the alternator works? Sure it isn't going to power the blower marker lights, head lights, cigar lighter, windshield wipers, backup lights, subwoofers, and underglow all at the same time. I'm sure Jimbo understands that.
@@crissd8283 Yeah I hate this kind of thinking as well. If you can figure out all the other stuff to make this swap work, then clearly you understand basics like alternator amperage.

20A is typical... for a motorbike. For a car, you can make it workable for night driving if you replace headlight bulbs with LEDs that give same light but are less than 10W each.
Hey - at least the coffee maker didn’t freeze and burst !! Feel better soon

Happy new year.
Cant wait for the turbo upgrade
Funny to think that is running on the same engine as my 7500w generator lmao
All best in new year and thank you for your effort and amazing content in 2022!

New Year’s resolution: buy a robot cantina coffee cup when they become available

JIMBO you have hit the big times you now have actual bots in the comments 😂😂😂
Hopefully you and the lawn gnomes can find peace this new year, I'm sure they could be helpful around the shop!
