The video was a breakthrough, and director Jeff Stein won a lot of awards for it.
For voices other than lead singer Ric Ocasek, try "Drive", which was their biggest hit. Ocasek still wrote it, but it's the bassist (Benjamin Orr) who does the singing there.

Second that - Drive is a beautifully written and produced song. The video (starring 80s model Pauline Porizkova who was also singer Ric Ocasek's girlfriend at the time) was equally intriguing - depicting her having a mental breakdown and the fallout from it. Very haunting and certainly one of their finest works.

The Cars are quintessential 80s new wave, but this song is more popish. I actually really recommend their deeper cuts. The Cars were on the bleeding edge of the emerging new wave sound in the late 1970s. Their first two albums (self-titled and "Candy-O") are fire. This album came out circa 1984 and it is a bit of a guilty pleasure for me. I prefer their earlier stuff, but there are some great songs on this album including this song, and "Magic" (which also has a very creative video). As to ballads, on this album there's a ballad titled "Drive" which is actually pretty dark if you listen closely to the lyrics.
But great songs to react to are any on the first two album. From Candy-O, you could do:
    Candy-O (title track)
Let's Go (ultimate party song when I was in high school and this song came out)
    Double Life
    Dangerous Type
Those are just from the top of my head. The whole album is great.

Who would have thought it possible to see Ric Ocasek and the rest of The Cars band members appear upon a bar of soap or in a medicine cabinet and so many other places like that? Incredible right? Prior to this video yes but technology was newly available and they took advantage of it and BAM! "You Might Think" is VIDEO OF THE YEAR! Nobody thought of songs like this as "stalker" music at the time. Not even "I'll Be Watching You" (which won three Grammys) was seriously thought of as stalker music back then. Nobody believed that stalking was the intent. The ironic thing was Sting, while admitting it sounded like a comforting love song when he wrote it, said that he didn't realize how sinister it sounded until much later. It's just that nobody thought of it that way back then. It seemed romantic. They were playing it at their weddings! It was couples music and nobody from those days will give it up. I love that song and so does almost everyone from those days. It will never be a stalking song to us. It kind of like how the Christmas song "Baby, It's Cold Outside" from the 40s has been considered "rapey" by some people in the 2000s when it isn't in a way a "rape" song.
So, with this song by The Cars; it's definitely not a stalking song. It was just music about really liking someone and really wanting to be with them. There is nothing wrong with that. None of it was about being with someone against their will or forcing themselves on someone else. The girl certainly didn't seem "threatened" in any way. Maybe he's persistent and perhaps even annoying like a fly but, that is very different from threatening or stalking. I don't think referring to stalking in reference to these songs is very fair.
Many of the rap songs of today talk about women in deliberately very demeaning and vulgar ways.

I agree! I'm pretty sure if our relatives/ancestors weren't a little "rapey" or "stalkers" most of us wouldn't be here. Ha!
How many stories do you hear of older people and how they got together? Most of the time your Grampa or Uncle kept "chasing" or "pursuing" and trying to "win their heart."

Interestingly, while their music is classic 80s new wave, if you listen to his guitar solos, they are full of country guitar licks. He’s a treat and makes the Cars music a treat as well. For a different sound from The Cars check out their song Dive. Think it won a Grammy.

I hope they get around to it though because I'm pretty sure they're gonna love it.

The objects you saw at the beginning was some of the first computer rendered 3D models that actually had surfaces instead of being just wire frame skeletons. Technology for mapping textures to surfaces were still in the future, hence the single pastel color.
Note that The Cars came out in the late 1970s. They were one of the first of the New Wave rock. I was more into the 70's stuff, as it seemed to have more soul and feeling while New Wave music in the 1980s seemed like just having fun. But I never got chills down the spine listening to 80's tracks. Thank goodness we had people like SRV in the 80's.

These are the Cars songs you have to check out: "Let's Go," "Let the Good Times Roll," "My Best Friend's Girlfriend," "Drive," "Moving in Stereo," "Touch and Go," "Dangerous Type," "Bye Bye Love." Those are just a few from their library. They were a few years ahead of everyone else. They already had an '80's sound in the mid to late 70's. A very unique band that saw me through my teens. We were lucky to have them.

Music videos were in its infancy, most videos were experimental as opposed to being really serious. Solo artists as well as groups or bands would make silly, fun videos to show people that they are likeable and in all counts, normal people. "Magic" and "Shake it up" are the embodiment of the 80s sound. Going to the mall and the arcade in the 80s were the places to be. Playing Q-Bert and jamming to 80s music on the arcades speaker system was an excellent time.

"GOOD TIMES ROLL", "MAGIC", "MY BEST FRIEND'S GIRL", "LET'S GO", "DRIVE" are some of my favorite's of theirs. Yes, the music video is a whole new medium thanks to MTV - who didn't have enough videos to run the channel 24 hrs. early on, so a lot of bad videos were hastily made, and bad bands got some air time, and for a while a handful of music videos seemed to air almost constantly, but it was a remarkable time. Tom Petty put out some great videos. In his last interview with Gary Shandling he said when you put music to video, there's a million ways you can go.

Cars were the unique new-wave group from late 70s into the 80s, with cutting edge videos. This song reminds me of the TV Show "Brain Dead" starring Tony Shahloub (previously in the awesome show "Monk"), where this song was played whenever the alien ants crawled into peoples brains - you need to watch to get the full effect.

The Cars really started in 1978. And in 78 and 79 the were really new waive rock band with songs like You’re all I’ve Got Tonight and Candy O. In the 80s they changed their sound a bit and become more of a “power pop” band.

  • @robnorrisradio

    Some notes:
You mentioned The Cars' strong harmonies in the previous video that you watched by them. Their earlier material was produced by Roy Thomas Baker, who also produced five of Queen's first six albums. This song, "You Might Think", was produced by Robert John "Mutt" Lange, who also produced albums by AC/DC, Bryan Adams, Def Leppard, and Shania Twain.
The woman in this video is model Paulina Porizkova, who was dating the band's main singer, Rick Okasek, at the time. They married in 1989, and remained together until his death in 2019.
You might think (See what I did there?) this is a stalker song, but it really isn't. This song is a goofy, quirky love song. It even reminds me of my very first girlfriend, whom I met early in 1984, around the time of this song's release.
Paulina is also featured in another video from this album, "Drive", which I strongly recommend. I know you prefer to know as little as possible before watching a video or hearing a song, but I will say "Drive" is sung by bass player Benjamin Orr.
