There was never a band like The Cars! They were in a category all of their own, a little bit of New Wave, Punk, and Rock and Roll. For a great guitar solo you should check out Touch and Go. Other suggestions by them would be Shake it Up, It's all I Can Do, I'm Not the One, All Mixed Up, Bye Bye Love, You're All I've Got Tonight, Let's Go, and my favorite quirky one I'm in Touch with Your World.

One of bands at the forefront of New Wave in the early early '80's. But they quickly outdistanced their contemporaries with their songwriting and melodic content. I still have this album "Heart Beat City"... freaking FANTASTIC album, not a bad song on it. "Magic" is just one of many great songs on that album. It seems just like yesterday when I first watched this video back in 84. The Cars are my 2nd favorite 80's band, only behind Duran Duran. And they are on my top 5 favorite bands of all time. The Cars were THE trend setters in the New Wave movement. I was just listing to their greatest hits compellation at the office today! They didn't technically have a lead singer... Rick Ocasec and Benjamin Orr shared vocals. Each had their own voice and each sang vocals on their biggest hits. Rick had the more raw punk kind of a voice, Ben had the more traditional radio-friendly kind of a voice that all the girls loved. Ben died in 2000, Rick died in 2019, but not before he got to preform live when the Cars were inducted into the Rock and Roll hall of fame in 2018. Rick sang vocals for songs that both he AND Ben made famous. Deep rabbit hole. Enjoy the trip. I don't know if you've reacted to Ricks other big hit from this Album, but you should react to the songs "You Might Think", and "Drive" if you haven't already. Peace!

The Cars were the kings of New Wave. Blondie, the Pretenders, DEVO, and other made valiant effort and are all great but the Cars ruled MTV from the start.

The walking on water thing is now something that's been done so often that nobody thinks twice about it, but this video was the first to use it. From what I remember (it's been almost 40 years), they hired a magician to build the illusion, and that may have been the first time the trick had ever been performed in that manner.

Funny you mention Weezer.. The lead singer in this song (Ric Ocasek) was the producer on several Weezer albums. The Cars have 2 lead singers, Ric Ocasek and Benjamin Orr. Ben Orr has the "better" of the 2 voices.. He sang "Drive" "Just What I Needed", "Bye, Bye Love" and many more.. Ocasek sang "Good Times Roll" and many others. Ocasek was the primary song writer. Both Orr and Ocasek have passed away..

Please consider reacting to The Cars videos and concert footage. They are so awesome to watch live.. especially the early years. And their keyboardist. Greg Hawkes.. he's a multii-nstrumentalust and although his stake is keyboards. He implements sax, banjo and flute.I think it's a banjo and a flute . As well as any other percussion.. And they are a casserole of 5 personalities that are so Ying/Yang AND they interact with each other during performances so you get to witness their affection for each other!

Seen them back in early eighties at Arizona State University live outside in the grass by the stadium . Had about 10 people with our group Girls were on shoulders of guys and we were close enough to almost touch the stage. The guitarists were throwing their guitar picks into the audience regularly throughout the show it was great time and they put on a fantastic show

Shake It Up was their fun party song
Bye Bye Love was my favorite Cars track, with their best guitar riff IMHO
Moving In Stereo was their coolest, moodiest
Candy-O was their punkiest techno groove
    Drive was their masterpiece. 😎

I think you guys should react to some of Rick Ocasec's solo hits. "Emotion in Motion" is a great song with a really quirky video. He branched out as a solo artist in the late 1980's along with Benjamin Orr. There was only one of his songs I remember called "Stay the Night" which was a good song but very underrated and fell off the radar very quickly when it was released, unlike Ocasec's songs. Either one of those two songs would be great to review. And "Drive" is a beautiful and haunting song and video and Benjamin Orr's vocal is terrific. Also, Rick Ocasec's wife, Paulina Porivoska (I just know I am spelling her last name wrong) is in the "Drive" video.

  • @norme10
    @norme10 2 года назад +2

Reminder.. The Cars have 2 singers. The bass player Ben Orr shared lead vocal duties with the rythym guitarist Ric Ocasek who sang this song. They often had similar tone, but once you notice the differences you can pick it up.

The presence of Producer Robert John “Mutt” Lange was definitely heard on this album. The way he took an entire band and pushed all of the members to do something new and different was purely awesome. He did the same thing for Def Leppard and helped rocket them to stardom.

The Cars were a great combination of New Wave and Pop. They had two top level vocalists in Ocasek and Benjamin Orr. Both died too young. Also the 80’s videos were always trying to be special because they wanted to be noticed/different so that MTV (so important at that time) would play it.

The Cars shot "Magic" at the Hilton family house in Beverly Hills, which Kathy Hilton had leased to the band. A plexiglass platform sat under the surface of the water. On the first take, the platform collapsed. The platform had to be adjusted to Ocasek's weight.

For a Cars song that's VERY different from what you've already heard but still rocks, try "Door to Door"--it's a lot faster and more punk than most of their other hits.
And if you want one that will leave you scratching your head with a "What did I just listen to?" vibe, hit their cover of "Little Black Egg". It's not nearly as weird as Rock Lobster, but it is odd.
