How is "Jesse's Girl" pervy? It's a bit crossing the line of the basic friend code- leave your friend's girl alone... but it's just a song about a guy who likes his friend's gf. Nothing pervy.
Summer of 1978. I was just 15 years old. The Cars first album really changed my life and my relationship with music. Their sound was like no other popular music I had ever heard before. Opened the door to many more progressive musicians and groups that followed. Ric Ocasek- brilliant.
So many good songs by the Cars- Drive, Good times roll. Let's go, shake it up, you're all I got tonight, Moving in Stereo, tonight she comes, magic, you might think, just what I needed. The hole is deep with the Cars!
I love the Cars, such a quirky, nerdy, lovable band! They came out during a time when there was either New Wave or Punk, and yet they were a little of both with a dash of Rock. Their first few albums were great! You can listen to Shake It Up, Let's Go, It's All I Can Do, I'm Not the One, Touch and Go, etc.
They had 2 singers - this is RIC Ocasek, the more quirky voice. Ben Orr is technically a much better singer, but they both have their place. Next should be " drive", that was a huge ballad and illustrates how well Ben sings. I remember Pointer Sisters at the 84 Grammys saying they thought " drive" should win, instead of the Pointer Sisters lol
Just What I Needed Live from The Midnight Special 1978. They were extremely good live. Lead guitarist seriously underrated. Not to EVEN mention the lead on this one is quite attractive.😂😂😂 Love you guys. I look to y'all first.
The Cars were a Boston-based music group that had their greatest success in the late-1970s and into the mid-1980s. They classified themselves as a "New Wave band". Some New Wave bands and solo artists of that time incorporated the "hiccup" technique as part of their singing style. It was inspired by the singing style of Buddy Holly on some of his songs during the 1950s. Ric Ocasek was the lead singer on this and other songs by the group, but bass player/keyboard player Benjamin Orr also sang lead vocals on some of the group's songs. Benjamin Orr died of pancreatic cancer in 2000, at the age of 53. Ric Ocasek died in 2019 while recovering at home from heart surgery, at the age 0f 75. The Cars are inductees in The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.
Great band. Growing up in Boston I got to see them as a club band before they made it big several times, my favorite memory was meeting the band in a parking garage on the way to seeing a Queen concert. Unfortunately no camera phones back then!
Bye Bye Love is my favorite Cars song 😊Love their catchy tracks. Yes they were popular and successful, but they also really had some great songwriting and an incredible guitarist. They totally deserved their place in the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame.

I remember cruising with my brother in his 72 Nova on the first really nice days of spring and early summer with the Cars cassette just jamming away in the stereo. Music restores memories and feelings.
First time I saw them was at a club in San Francisco in 1979. Ben’s voice, live, was amazing. He was talented, cool, and gorgeous to look at. The Cars are forever one of my favorite bands.
Another banger on this level from their first album would be "Bye Bye Love." Just amazing EVERYTHING in the song: uptempo, bangin' guitar solo, bangin' KEYBOARD solo, and maybe the most impassioned Ben Orr lead vocal in their whole catalog. Try it and see!
Yes! Bye Bye Love is great no matter which recording or performance you choose -- debut album , demo version, Rock Goes to College, US Festival -- take your pick!
I love the Cars! 70 and 80's music was the best always a song when your down to bring you back up. A good 70's song is Harold,Joe Frank and Reynolds - Don't Pull Your Love.
You should probably check out the Cars “moving in stereo”. That song had a supporting role in a pretty famous movie moment. Also, Amber might like “Drive”. It’s a ballad, really nice.
The "sunshine pop" sound was just a guitar - specifically a Fender Telecaster. Elliot Easton is using a technique called Chicken Pickin' which really highlights the 'spankiness' inherent in Tele's. That particular model of guitar is really popular in country music because of its tone.
Great band. Being a Bostonian I fell in love with them from the get go. Check out the video for Drive, the beautiful girl is Paulina Porizkova who would become Ric Ocasek's wife of many years.
Their best song, pure pop confection. When this hit the airwaves in Boston in 77 (?) it was like rock had returned from bloat land. I always felt like the lyrics were from some future/past timeframe, like the early atomic age meets the post nuclear apocalypse, like the movie Gattaca. Chorus, solo, lyrics, heavy beat, etc. All perfect. Eddie and Buddy would have loved it.
Another great 70s band. The Cars have that unique sound. Good review. Here are three very good Cars songs: Just What I Needed, Moving in Stereo and All Mixed Up. 😀

You may have noticed the Queen-like back-up vocals on this song. That's because both bands had the same producer in Roy Thomas Baker who was one the most innovative producers ever and the first to use 40 track recording.
"Drive" is my absolute favorite by them, along with the video. I suggested it to be the first song of theirs to listen to, a long time ago. I also like "Shake It Up" and "Just What I Needed".

As someone else noted, Elliot Easton's guitar is sublime. So melodic and catchy it sounds easy, but it's not. He's a Berkley School of Music grad who hooked up with the a great group of guys from Boston. "Just What I Needed" "Drive" "You're all I've Got Tonight" are just a few of my faves.
Elliot Easton is on my top 10 list of favorite guitarists. His solos are awesome, but I feel like no two follow the same pattern or sound exactly the same. The more Cars you dip into, the more you will see for yourself. Some are poppy, some are kinda nasty. He's totally under rated.
Not a bad song on this album, almost all were top hits for a debut album too. I got all their albums on original vinyl LPs sealed up and played every so often. I saw them 3x in concert and they always put on a great show. Great reaction, guys. "Candy-O" and "Let's Go" were a couple of my early favs.
I love Ric Ocasek’s style and his voice is so unique! This is the opposite of Jessie’s Girl! His singing style in this song reminds me a little of Buddy Holly’s voice in his songs Peggy Sue or Rave On! The Cars were one of the eighties best bands! RIP Ric!❤️❤️
I was 11 years old and totally blown away by The Cars when this song and the album "The Cars" came out! The whole album is great, as is their second album "Candy-O". You should hit the song "Candy-O" next from this album! It sounds futuristic, hypnotic and rocks hard! The album cover is pretty awesome, too! 😎 They have many other great songs on their other albums, but if you ever do a whole album review, please react to these two first. You won't regret it! Some of the songs on each album flow into the next, which adds to the experience. Their sound was so unique and I can remember feeling lucky to experience the birth of a cool new music genre called New Wave. Blondie, Devo, Talking Heads, and the B-52's are some other great acts in the same genre.
Exacta Mundo! I'm about the same age and 100% agree! I loved the synthesizer/New Wave sound coming out then - Devo and BLONDIE of course, but the B-52's are from Athens, G-A! And growing up in Metro Atlanta, that was a pretty BFD! AAAAAH! It was a great time to be alive if you loved music!
I remember when this came out! This was the big song they played on the radio all the time. I had to run out and get the album right away. Maybe do Moving In Stereo next.
Heard this on my way home tonight - Classic Rock, for sure! Ric Ocasek was refreshingly unique, and largely unknown by this generation - RIP. Highly recommend LET'S GO!, SHAKE IT UP, MAGIC, GOOD TIMES ROLL, DRIVE, etc. They had rather good music videos, so check out the official ones if you can.
The Cars' "Heartbeat City" concert tour was the first live show that I ever attended without my parents. Obviously, I've been a fan for decades. "Let's Go" is a classic, as is "Good Times Roll", "Shake It Up", and "Magic". However, for your next one, I would recommend "Drive", as it's one of the few Cars hits where the lead vocals are sung by the bassist, Benjamin Orr, and not by Ric Ocasek. It's a truly beautiful, haunting song, and one of the best songs of the 80s.
My older brother introduced me to these guys back in the late 70's and I've loved them since! Such a unique sounding band. Love them! Wonderful early childhood memories with these guys. RIP Ben RIP Ric 🌹🎸🎶🎵
Forget their 80s pop hits for now. The Cars are among the originators of New Wave (some say the Fathers of New Wave, and I wouldn't disagree) in the 70s. Explore their first 2 or 3 albums first (the one you just did is from their first, and still best album). I would suggest Bye Bye Love" or "All Mixed Up" from the same album. Or if you want quirkier, try "I'm in Touch with your World" or "Moving in Stereo" (or you could do Moving in Stereo immediately followed by All Mixed Up, since the end of one begins the other on the album). If you want some quirky fast paced new wave techno rock, try "Candy-O" from their second album of the same name.
The Cars were one of my favourite bands when I was in high school and “My Best Friend’s Girl” was my favourite Cars song. I also loved “Just What I Needed”.
Wasn't the 80's a lot more fun ? I mean in general, people just didn't take everything as so serious. The Cars have many great hits, and most are the " boy meets girl " type. I love the bass lines !

This album was from 1978; the real new wave era IMO was 78 to 81.
"Bye Bye Love" cool breaks, keyboards, and guitar solo to finish!
"Shake It Up" should be your next Cars song.
My favorite song by The Cars
The Cars' "Heartbeat City" concert tour was the first live show that I ever attended without my parents. Obviously, I've been a fan for decades. "Let's Go" is a classic, as is "Good Times Roll", "Shake It Up", and "Magic". However, for your next one, I would recommend "Drive", as it's one of the few Cars hits where the lead vocals are sung by the bassist, Benjamin Orr, and not by Ric Ocasek. It's a truly beautiful, haunting song, and one of the best songs of the 80s.
Rick with his hiccup is a little Buddy Holly in fluence
Al Stewart, "Year Of The Cat", Please!!
You two would like The Cars - Dangerous Type. Kinda spooky sounding and it def rocks out!!!
The 70s alone put out enough great music to entertain the world!
The Greatest then the late 60s
The Cars were one of my favourite bands when I was in high school and “My Best Friend’s Girl” was my favourite Cars song. I also loved “Just What I Needed”.
Oingo Boingo, dead man's party ,. Think you will love it , gets you moving
Love that song
@@yelnek4548 the Ritz in 1985 , best show I've ever seen ,( it's on you tube ); Fun night to remember
Pure class. I miss music like this. Often imitated never duplicated.
Wasn't the 80's a lot more fun ? I mean in general, people just didn't take everything as so serious. The Cars have many great hits, and most are the " boy meets girl " type. I love the bass lines !
IM 63 AND the 70s were way more fun
Love the Cars!
the Cars is one of my favorite groups when I was growing up in the 80's, love them
Mine also inthe 70s this songs from 1978 When i was 18 now im 64 lol
Living In Stereo has always been one of my favorites that they did. Also very quirky, but in a different way.
The song is called moving in stereo lol you were close
@@popguynjyes, thank you. damn...I corrected it twice and autocorrect kept changing it. Thought I had it the last time.
I still get chills at The Cars song Drive. I used to use that to sign off my radio show in college, but had a personal connection to the song too.
Another great Band from my city!
The cars have 2singers who sing lead . This is Ric Ocasik the other is Benjamin Orr.
