So many great songs! "Let's go ", "Moving in stereo", "You're all I've got tonight", "Tonight she comes", "Magic", "Since your gone", "Dangerous type", plus so many more.
The Cars were quite quirky. This was actually one of their more somber songs, and one of my favorite of therirs because I preferred Ben Orr's voice much more than Ric Ocasek. May they both rest in peace. Ugh, it's depressing to think about how many of our 80s idols are no longer with us. Maybe they flew too close to the sun back then.
I was 12 when this dropped in the 80s. Unless you lived through that time, it’s almost impossible to describe the sense of melancholy and nostalgia the song brings back. I’m sure my fellow GenX’ers will agree…
Exactly the same here bro. Agree with every word. Its almost impossible to describe to someone one what was it like to listen to these songs for the first time in the 80's. They just needed to be there to understand. The only word that comes close is "magic"

I'm a boomer, and a huge fan of the cars. I was in my late twenties when the cars became popular and at the time I didn't like them. But now I'm having a big time crush on them and looking back and loving the music and especially loving Ben Orr for his great singing his musical Mastery and just being a good person all around.
1985 I asked a girl standing by the dance floor to dance while this song came on. She said yes. We will celebrate 32 years married this Summer, Song has great memories!
Greg Hawkes is an absolute virtuoso on synthesizers. I’ve played synths in the past and the amount of layering on this track is perfection. Perfect pattern interlacing, syncopation, and atmospherics. It’s a textbook for analogue electronic music in one song. Just gorgeous!
@@ricomajestic Alas, if only I had the right equipment these days. I can hear at least seven voices at various states of phase with about three leads, two accents, and two for background atmospherics and counter-harmonies. Some of the pulse track may have synthesized sonics too, but I wouldn’t take away from the drummer on that. I can’t tell. I don’t hear sampling. All sounds are modeled polyphonies. It really is a masterpiece!
Drive is a perfect song. I could listen to it 50 times a day & would never get sick of it. It'll still be on the radio in 100 years, unless of course the Lord returns before that
Moving in stereo should always be immediately followed by "all mixed up" and never is. But All mixed up is incredible. Killer. Gigantic. It's like this. Somber. But never found an audience.
The Cars stand alone. This song is a big departure from their normal music. However, it happens to be my favorite song by the Cars. Much Love from California Kat ❤
In the U.K. this catapulted into every home as it was coupled with graphic images of famine in Africa for Live Aid. It was sealed as one of the most instantly recognisable tunes of that era for people of my age. I hear it and I’m taken right back to that historic concert.
The song had faded from the charts by that time, so there was no doubt that its sudden rocketing in sales in the UK after Live Aid (to number 4 in the main singles chart) was a direct result of how moved the TV audience had been by that famine footage. The Cars, hugely to their credit, refused to profit from the windfall of income that this brought them, and redirected the royalties (£160,000) to famine relief.
I was in the crowd at Wembley that day. To be fair, most of us were already tired and emotional when this was played, but it is true that the impact it had in the stadium was seismic. Many of us were in tears, hugging loved ones, or holding our hands over our mouths as we gasped at the horror of the images. It was chilling.
Even though written by Ric Ocasek, who also normally sang their songs, letting Orr sing this was a genius move. He has an angst and vulnerability not usually present in Ocasek's vocals.
As mentioned before, the singing may sound different because The Cars had 2 lead singers: Ric Ocasek (guitars) and Benjamin Orr (bass) who sang this song. Ric tends to sound more quirky with his vocal style and tends to do lead vocals on more of their upbeat songs while Ben sings more of their slower, ballad type songs like this (but that's not always the case). However, what really makes this song so lovely are all of those lush and beautifully layered synth parts along with the solid, half-time drum beat thru most of the song, only picking up slightly during the chorus. But the real meaning comes from the haunting lyrics and video about being there for someone who is having a serious mental breakdown (and possibly trying to deny it to themselves and others) which is so poignant, deep and touching. And the person telling the story, who is trying to help the one having the breakdown by making valid points about who will care for them if they won't come to terms with their current diminished mental state, just stops arguing and simply offers to drive them home to make sure they get there safe. This is one of The Cars most meaningful works.
Outstanding....that you noticed....that one of the main features of "The Cars".....aside from their obvious vocal, instrumental and writing skill...is that they were able to "integrate" the new instrument sounds with classic rock sounds. They rode the hard line of 70's rock and early to mid 80's synth. The early Euro-centric synth heads like me that were listening to Human League, Yaz, Heaven 17 and many others less mainstream....also liked The Cars. They had great sounds and just enough synth. Likewise.....the semi-classic rock and roll crowd were digging them too.
The guy singing is our beloved Electric Angel Rock and Roller Benjamin Orr 💜 who we sadly lost in 2000 to pancreatic cancer. His vocals and bass are my favorite thing about the Cars ✨
I saw the Cars on their "Heartbeat City" tour & on the "Door to Door" tour... both concerts, when the song "Drive" was being performed, a fight broke out. It's so NOT an aggressive song... weirdness! The Cars were a wonderfully balanced band, with Ric Ocasek's interpretation of Beat poetry lyrics, two distinctive lead singers (Ocasek & Ben Orr), Eliot Easton's & Greg Hawkes' classical training (Berkeley School of Music), and David Robinson's deep experience (originally of The Modern Lovers) and graphic art sensibilities. There likely won't be another band like them. Their debut album in '77 still ranks as one of the best debut albums of the 1970s (not a 'fluff' track on it).
I'm so happy that you guys choose to make a reaction with this beautiful song! One of the most powerful 80s ballad ever....your reaction is priceless...I love a lot how the young generation loves this classics song from my era....the 80s...The lead singer on this song is Benjamin Orr...he die because of cancer...rest in peace....
This song touches on a significant dynamic. It gives a real feel to both the torment experienced by the subject, her mania or extreme swings and the near exhaustion of the singer, on the brink of leaving but still so concerned for her well being. Not a lot of songs shined light on the subject of mental illness and what it was like to love someone dealing with it. This one might have been a catalyst for people in chaotic relationships to really look at themselves.
Robert John “Mutt” Lange was such a damn good producer. Not only did he push all of the members of Def Leppard to do new and different things with their music, he did it with this band as well. It paid off very well for both bands.
This song is made even better By Ben Orr’s resonant and soothing voice. I think this is one of his greatest vocals while a member of the Cars. The song is a departure from their other tunes, however I find it to be one of their best songs.
This, and Mr. Mister's Broken Wings are two absolutely ESSENTIAL 80's songs to me. While i love *hundreds* of them, those two just bring me back to 85 in such a vivid way it's almost eerie... They both have that same haunting quality to them, and the synth layers that keep building up and both Benjamin's and Richard's voices..., just grabs me every time, no matter if i listened to them, literally, hundreds of times...
Awesome band, and you're right, there's so much tenderness and compassion in this song. They played it during Live Aid in 1985 (there was even a footage showing Ethiopian famine, heartbreaking).
The woman in this video is 80s supermodel Paulina Porizkova, only 18 when this was filmed. She later married The Cars lead singer Ric Ocasek. They were married 28 years.
You could try “Bye Bye Love” , “Let’s Go” , “ Moving in Stereo/All Mixed Up”- “Why Can’t I Have You”. I guess you know by now that they have two singers and at first it can be hard to tell who is singing.
The CMI Fairlight Synth was VERY popular in 1985 especially with Mutt Lang (The Producer) The Cars were actually after a more Guitar /Rock oriented sound, but wound up with a very synth-centric production
The girl is Paulina Porizkova, a model that was everywhere in the 80's. I believe her and Ric Ocasek (tall guy, black hair) first met when shooting this video. They later married and stayed together until his passing in 2019.
Amber & Jay, I don't know if this was in the comments (didn't see it), but this is not the same lead singer that you heard in the other songs. Ric Ocasek was the singer for most of the band's biggest hits. But this ballad is sung by Benjamin Orr, the band's bass guitarist.
Would love to see y’all react to “The Hooters” another 80’s band with a different sound and a number of under appreciated tunes. Try out “And we danced”, “Day by Day”, “All you Zombies”, “Satellite”, “500 Miles”, and/or “Johnny B”. I think you’d really enjoy them.
I don't know about you but to me this song is a classic that will last forever, from day one in 1984 it played on the radio..it will be a classic for every generation...there s nothing like it when you play it when you are on the road driving..Thank you for playing this song and video...BTW, the singer Benjamin Orr has another classic called STAY THE NIGHT..
This is my favorite song from the Cars! It really helped me dealing with my issues as a teen. I really did not think that a song like this was so powerful. Rest In Peace Benjamin Orr and Ric Ocasek.
For anyone who was around in 1985, this song has even more meaning than the promo video, which I also love. Drive was a hit in 1984 and had commercial success, but during the Live Aid concert it took on an extra meaning. The story goes (just from memory so I might be wrong). Story goes, that David Bowie decided to leave out one of his songs on his set, and bearing in mind each artist only had a limited amount of performance time. So he decided to substitute one of his songs for a video created by an English video engineer and courtesy of CBS. The song on the video was the Cars Drive but the video was a compilation of clips af the terrible famine in Ethiopia. This video played to Wembley Stadium crowd and across the globe too. And apart from bringing everyone to tears, it spiked the conscience of maybe those who would be watching just for entertainment without any real motive to contribute to the cause. If I had to name 10 moments in my life that I'll never forget, the Cars video at Live Aid would be one of them. I know you guys won't read this post but for those who are either curious as to what I'm talking about or who remember, the link is below. ruclips.net/video/9xIpHNd3hjU/видео.html
Benjamin Orr was one of my favorite bass players of that era. Let's Go is my favorite song by The Cars. They have a great catalogue. I would also recommend All Mixed Up and Touch and Go. Too many more to mention. Their debut album was phenomenal. RIP Ben and Ric.
The girl in this is an 18 year old Paulina Porizkova who, 5 years later would marry Ric Ocasek, the guy she's fighting with in the video. They were together for 28 years. They had a place in Boston's Back Bay on Marlborough Street when I went to Emerson College and I saw her walking around a lot since my dorm was on the corner of Marlborough and Massachusetts Avenue in 1991.
I was only six when this came out, but it’s one of the few 80s songs that has an emotional, visceral memory for me. My grandpa was my whole world when I was little, and he passed away in 1984 after what, I remember, was a long battle with metastatic pancreatic cancer (in reality I know now it was less than 6 months). I remember this song most from that year and feel it’s intrinsically liked to watching my grandpa grow more ill and pass away. I found out only a few years ago my aunt remembers this song in that way as well. I love this song but can only listen to it once in a while.
Love the Cars. This song is special to my hubby and I. Before we starting dating (1984) one night we were a youth group function. He had been interested in me for awhile. That night he flirted with me a bit. Then on his way home he heard this song on the radio and was thinking of me. A few months later we started dating. Been married for 36 years.
Jay/ Amber Knowing this song is very reminiscent to my generation because when this song was released in 1984; then singer, Benjamin Orr passed away in 6 years later of cancer in 2000.
You were probably reacting to other songs by The Cars songs when Ric Ocasek was singing. This one was sung by bassist Benjamin Orr. Their voices are VERY different.
This is one of the most beautiful songs ever created

You said it all. I love this song.
Agree. Well said. Benjamin was such an underrated front man. Very talented group.
became his 3rd and last wife and she did not need his money; way to hustle Rick!

Melancholy is the feeling I get from Ben's voice. So good though.
Good job!!
I have always loved this song. Ben Orr was a wonderful singer. My favourite Cars song.
You can tell it’s an 80’s song because it’s good.
Absolutely
Benjamin Orr sang lead on this song with a softhearted emotional offering. He passed away from pancreatic cancer in 2000

This song is imbedded in my mind with the tragic footage it was played over 😢

Orr sang lead vocal on probably half of their songs.
Ric said several times "if a song needs a good voice, it goes to Ben"
@@marks9140 Right, but Ric wrote most of the lyrics. He just developed a knack for knowing what was a "Benjamin" song.
Another of my favorite 80s tunes from another of my favorite 80s groups. Man I miss the 80s! RIP Ric Ocasek
The synthesizer changed music forever. The Beatles used it on Strawberry Fields but the earliest proponents were the Moody Blues.
First concert I ever went to... 1979 Vancouver's Pacific Coliseum.
I'm so glad I grew up as a teenager during the 80s, we had such great music. Thanks for reminding me 🙂
As mentioned before, the singing may sound different because The Cars had 2 lead singers: Ric Ocasek (guitars) and Benjamin Orr (bass) who sang this song.
"Since You're Gone," "Dangerous Type," and "Let's Go" would all be good picks.
Bye Bye Love, Let's Go, & Benjamin Orr's solo Stay the Night.... R.I.P. Benjamin & Rik
I remember this song being played over heartbreaking images from the famine in Africa during Live Aid so powerful.

"Sound" = haunting.

true
The music video was directed by the actor Timothy Hutton. Very popular MTV video. It’s also where Paulina met Ric.
Any of these would be great: “Shake it Up,” “Magic,” and “Hello, Again.” Oh, “Bye Bye Love” and “Let’s Go!”
The cars singer with the black hair was married to the beauty n the video name Paulina Porascova! She used to b the Estee Lauder model! Just flawless
What a classic! So soulful! It touched a chord of the melancholic that I needed to hear. One of my favorites way back when. Just beautiful!
'Drive' is my favorite Cars song with 'Moving in Stereo' and 'Magic' tied for second! 'Let's Go' fits in there too.
I love this song, greatly sad that Benjamin died beyond his time, even sadly that Ric O is also is gone 😢😢😢❤
For my money, one of the most beautiful pop songs of all time. Absolutely ethereal.
Awesome band, and you're right, there's so much tenderness and compassion in this song. They played it during Live Aid in 1985 (there was even a footage showing Ethiopian famine, heartbreaking).
This is my ALL TIME FAVORITE Cars Song. The song is about getting into a car with a drunk driver
They had two different singers which helped them sound more versatile.
The CMI Fairlight Synth was VERY popular in 1985 especially with Mutt Lang (The Producer) The Cars were actually after a more Guitar /Rock oriented sound, but wound up with a very synth-centric production
At 3:30 I can now only hear "Pork Pie" since watching Peter Kay - Misheard Lyrics 😆
Great track though!
As soon as I saw it was "this" song its the first thing I thought of immediately
Lol me too. I even sang it 🙈
Lol me too. I don't even know the correct lyric anymore
The girl is Paulina Porizkova, a model that was everywhere in the 80's. I believe her and Ric Ocasek (tall guy, black hair) first met when shooting this video. They later married and stayed together until his passing in 2019.
Every Band has its Killer Ballad, and this is the Cars Killer Ballad
Paulina, the woman in the video was Rick Ocasek's wife. She was beautiful then and still.
The cars have such a diverse catalog of greats.
I haven't thought about The Hooters in years. They were pretty good... I remember playing one of their tapes over and over and over and...
Up vote for the Hooters
Plus Rob Hyman and Eric Bazillian of the Hooters wrote one of Cyndi Lauper's biggest hits, "Time After Time".
Benjamin Orr went on to have a solo album in the 80s called The Lace. Had a minor hit with a catchy tune, "Stay the Night." Highly recommended.
This song is one of my first memories as a child. So nostalgic!

I love this song but can only listen to it once in a while.
...it doesn't help that it's not a particularly happy song anyway.
She was married to the lead singer, she was in a movie with Tom Selleck called HER ALIBI, a great movie, it's so good
Such a beautiful song about mental illness. The denial of it and the struggle to seek help.
All you can say about this song is Benjamin Orr has a magic voice. And Amber, the Bigfoot riding on the Loch Ness Monster T Shirt is very cool.
The Cars are usually upbeat and this is a ballad. My favourite Cars song - Lets Go. Tonight she comes and Shake it up are good too
God I miss the 80's! As a Baby Boomer born in 1960 this decade was the best way to spend my life from 20 to 30 in.
❤
Did anyone know that this video was produced by the actor…. Timothy Hutton 😊
The late great Benjamin Orr and Ric Ocasek!
Btw, that gorgeous woman in the video is Paulina Porizkova, who was a famous model during that time period, and she became Rick Ocasek's wife.
My goodness at the memories from this song. THANK YOU.
One of the best 80's songs ever! I LOVE IT! GREAT REACTION GUYS!
My favourite song by The Cars💥💥💥
Benjamin Orr had a solo hit called "Stay The Night" back in the 80's.
Magic is almost always overlooked, please do that song next.
I agree!
Jay/ Amber
Knowing this song is very reminiscent to my generation because when this song was released in 1984; then singer, Benjamin Orr passed away in 6 years later of cancer in 2000.
This haunting classic will live with me forever- superb song!!
You were probably reacting to other songs by The Cars songs when Ric Ocasek was singing. This one was sung by bassist Benjamin Orr. Their voices are VERY different.
