Had a dual boiler and a smart grinder for 4 yrs.
You can do perfect drinks.
Really good combo
Breville owns Baratza, the makers of the Sette grinders. I think the Sette 270, at $200 more, is a better match for the dual-boiler. It has more discrete steps, and it’s better for single-dosing. The 270w, which can weigh the doses, is even better. Only downside is the Sette is for espresso grinding and not drip/French press grinding. There are other premium grinders to consider as well. I don’t think Breville’s grinder is ideal with this machine, that’s all.
I just got rid of my 870 and got the 920 dual boiler with a sette 270wi grinder and I can tell you this combo is simply astounding, consistent every shot.
Grind dial 9 is to cores for espresso. There was not enough coffee in the basket. Gauge pressure should be around 8 during extraction. You don't leave filter with the coffee in the machine. Purpose of dual boiler is to extract and steam in the same time.
Was painful to watch. Not sure what he meant by turn up the temp for the steam for a latte and not as hot for a cappuccino (it’s just the ratio of foam) nothing to do with temp. A bit disappointed not to see his Picasso painting, seemed like it was a blank picture with the lack of foam...
Great combo, using it for two years now. Over the years i've tried many settings to reach the best shot. There are so many variables to play with, which is great! I never use the single shot, always double shot basket. Grind settings 1-3 depending on the beans (light-med roast), about 17gr for double shot. Lowered the temp to 91 degrees, always using manual button (holding for pre-infusion) and releasing it immediately when the coffee starts to drip to get the full pressure. Pressure about 8-ish bar. 22-25 seconds from releasing the manual button to brew a espresso. Works great! Don't forget to warm up the portafilter before brewing! Bottomless portafilter warms up much faster than the dual sprout portafilter (as expected as almost only the basket needs to warm up).
Grind settings 1-3 with the inner settings on default? (Mid between fine and course 5)
Or did you adjust it as well?
@@samymohamed9693 Did not change the inner settings.
I have this set up and really enjoy it.
The way I understood the razor is that it’s used after tamping. At least that works well for me to insure that the coffee level is smooth and not too high for the shower after it’s packed.
Just curious. Is there are reason you didn't drop the espresso while you were steaming your milk? I thought that would have been a contributing factor in getting a double boiler.
I'm considering getting one of these vs the Oracle as I think I would prefer more control over my dosing. I think the grinder should be much better than the built in grinder on the oracle as well.
Any thought on the advantages of one over the other for machines and grinders?
Also, Thanks for the video!
Are they in seperate boxes inside the bigger box?
Breville explicitly tells you to use the razor tool "after" tamping. Not before. If you do it before tamping then certainly you will be underdosing.
Both the smart grinder pro and the 920 looks still great and price competitive after so many years in the market. My complaint is the weak steam power of the 920 (compared to two of its newer siblings) and the weak and whining motor of the Breville grinder.
How long does it take for the device to heat up?
Great video. Thank you. It’s made my mind up 😃
It hurt me that he steamed milk first. This makes milk go cold and also allows the seperate layers of milk to settle. Also complete defeated the purpose of the dual boiler, allowing both espresso pulling and milk steaming simultaneously unlike other home espresso machines. 😣😣😣
Does anyone know much about the IMS shower screen upgrade is for this machine and if it's worth doing for the extra cost?
Nice pair
I have the Smart Grinder. It’s a good beginner model grinder for espresso, but it’s a fantastic grinder for drip, pour over, or French press.
yes it is!
So its not so much good for espresso ?
@@mohammedsca5562 Grinds are inconsistent.
The big disappointment of this unit is that it’s aimed at the lower level prosumer enthusiast and it beats out many machines at two or three times the cost but doesn’t allow for plumbing it in to a water supply or at the very least plumbing the tray out to the drain under the counter :(
The latter would not be that expensive a feature.
I have the barista express and I love it - probably pulled about 7 thousand shots so far. Want to upgrade to an Italian or Swiss machine but seriously the price of this one can’t be ignored.
Great start up appliance for learning coffee .
Dude, come on. What are you smoking?!! People can get the single boiler machine for starting up in coffee.
@@saeedanasir dude ? Interesting 🤔 analogy for my comment. Obviously 🙄 not happy with any comments good , bad or indifferent.
Oof that shot heh, I've had my barista express for 5 years and I'm noticing every shot out of it is sour, even when it's over extracted which makes no sense. Also the grinder on it is getting a bit of age on it, doesn't want to grind super fine anymore. Perhaps it is time for an upgrade.
Can you align the burrs in that one? Maybe it can give you some more service!
None of us are professional baristas. We’re just trying to do our best and to give you good information.
I blame the grinder, definitely upgrade it when you have the chance, or at least replace the burrs, then clean your machine and try again. If it's still sour, change the beans to a darker roasted profile, or search for italian blends (arabica + robusta). Also keep in mind that over extracted shots tend to have an astringent taste to them, which is often confused with sourness. I hope it helps!
What is he doing with his shot...
wasn't dialed in as explained.
Weird to put together such a good machine with a pretty average grinder
I had the smart grinder pro for a few years (recently got a niche zero). It's really quite good for the money and can produce surprisingly decent testing espresso, especially for the price point. Having said that, if you're willing to spend a fair bit more you could certainly get a better grinder to pair with the dual boiler.
@@chrisdturner yes, I agree, I don't think it's a bad grinder at all. I've never owned one, but the thing is, I feel that a thousand dollar machine is pointed towards an audience that might want a better grinder. Dunno, maybe I'm wrong and there's a market for people like that.
@@MrMarki134 Yeah, a fair point. It probably would be worth spending a little more to get a prosumer level grinder to pair with it
@@chrisdturner i have the Dual Boiler with a Silenzio grinder. Perfect match at an affordable price.
@@chrisdturner is Niche zero shot quality by taste hands down better than SGP?
