    This is the best review of a coffee machine I have come across. Detailed and no fluff. The main difference between this and the Oracle for me is the pressure dial, which I use to quickly fine tune my grind when switching beans. I like volumetric dosing as I just count the shot time in my head and then I know that I have hit everything how I want it. (I have a stopwatch in my head that is usually accurate to a second).

    The dual boiler is so cheap in Australia compared to everything else, often on sales it can be had for 600-800 usd, truly unbeatable value for a new machine.

      Sage BES 920 BTR, new, on sale, in Australia for $600-$800? That's a very nice price. In the EU, we can only pretend. Dude, shipping also costs something. Just a question, from which factory I send it to the EU. And certainly more, but in the EU it is a brand - Sage. Ciao.

    Great work, Jess. I’m sold on the Breville dual Boiler or the std Oracle. They seem to have the right features built in for we that love great coffee, but don’t always have the time to fuss in the morning. Just a few questions:
    1. What were your thoughts on the Oracle if you looked at it?
    2. Do you know anything about the Breville grinder that seems to be added to make a package with the DB machine? I’m guessing it doesn’t grind for drip coffee.
    I enjoy your production with the video and love your scripting. I also guess you’re “ad libbing” when it suits you. I would defiantly like to see you tackle a science of coffee project. That would be fun! Continued success and thanks for content!

    • @GadgetsGearCoffee
      @GadgetsGearCoffee  2 года назад

      Hey David! I don't have the oracle, I've looked at it for fun in the past though, it's great it's the most automated you can get in that price ranger while still being real espresso VS a super auto (unless you get a super auto at 6k+ which can sometimes have actual espresso pressure and such). If you want good espresso, have a higher budget, don't want to put too much work into but still need to dial in, and want something more automated, that's the way to go. If you're gonna be obsessive and perfecting it is your thing, either one works because you can still go more manual with the oracle ans forego the included tamp and grinder.
      For the breville grinder I couldn't tell you but there are probably other reviews that can help you! I think it's middle ground like it's not incredible for either pour over or espresso. Generally any grinder will be geared more to one over the other. Even the more expensive ones.
      And yes I have général talking points and specs but I honestly don't consult it much which explains why editing becomes a paiiiinnnn. I tried once to stick to it and the video just didn't flow. Much like my coffee, I need to flow. Lol

    Beautiful explained! Really Looking forward to buy this machine. The only Thing that is bothering me is the durability. I have read from other users that this machine will not last very long and that you have to Do a lot of repairs on your own. If i invest in a machine like this i do not want to buy a new one in a couple of years. What is your experience? Still everything fine?

    • @GadgetsGearCoffee
      @GadgetsGearCoffee  2 года назад

      mine is still fine, I think it's around the 3 year mark you're supposed to change some gaskets and all, I have some pages bookmarked and I guess I'll find out when I get there! It's definitely less easy to repair, it's built differently but if you take care of it, you can keep it for a while. Don't forget a lot of people who do buy this machine aren't very handy or DIY-er, but there are some and they're the ones who left a lot of documentation behind for the rest of us :)

      100%. You'll never get the intensity and syrup feel from a super auto (maybe the 6000$ ones but I haven't tried those). When you make an OK cup, it'll taste like a super auto. When you make a good cup, it'll taste like heaven. Get ready to go down the rabbit hole and take some time to learn, it's a constant and humbling journey

    • @GadgetsGearCoffee
      @GadgetsGearCoffee  3 года назад

      hmmmm no. It's a great machine for sure, but you have to pay a lot more attention to things because there are way less features and since it's not a dual boiler, it's "more work" and timing to figure out the steam for the latte art. It's a smaller machine and if you don't mind putting in more work it's great, and ya there are some PID mods and such. If you don't drink milk based, it's much easier.

    • @GadgetsGearCoffee
      @GadgetsGearCoffee  3 года назад +1

      ya that would have been nice but you can't get it all and maybe there are some complications with the device that Breville just chose not to do it. It seems really targeted to a specific customer base though the BDB seems to be a different target than they anticipated - as in, there are way too many handholding instructions everywhere on the levers and such and an espresso enthusiast, or anyone really that's a bit more technically inclined would not need.
      As for the water outlet, I have one of these amzn.to/3zFAu8s so I don't need the water outlet.
      Wish they made it more compact, too much space in there but I'm no engineer so I'm not sure if that was space was left for heat reasons, I suspect it's cost savings though and they reused the same shell and mould as Oracle.

    • @GadgetsGearCoffee
      @GadgetsGearCoffee  2 года назад

      fun fact, originally was getting the Ascaso Dream with PID, ordered it but they messed up inventory and the white wasn't in so I went back into research mode and settled on the BDB instead, happy accident on that one (aesthetically uglier but functionally/feature better). It's a shame Ascaso doesn't have a lot of marketing or popularity, though I've read some steam wand leaking issues.
      The Steel Duo is pretty, but duo thermoblocks, doesn't have as many features, the water tank location isn't great for my kitchen set up and I love the easy fill on the BDB. Prefer the steam lever to the push toggle button on the Steel Duo.
      Though the features I did like on the Ascaso (dream and steel duo) is the adjustable OPV on the outside. That's something I wish BDB had, no burn steam wand, volumetric shot "timer".
      Love the aesthetics of the Steel Duo though, if I had to buy again today, all things considered, still the BDB but it's a close call.

    Hey Jess,
    Great video and so much enthusiasm, which is refreshing to view. I have a question. As I have seen many times, lots of people start their time when the first drop hits the bottom of the glass. How does this machine deal with that? And also with pre infusion, do you start the time when the first drop hits the glass? Love to hear your feedback.
    Alex

    • @GadgetsGearCoffee
      @GadgetsGearCoffee  3 года назад +3

      I start my timer (well the BDB starts their timer) as soon as you hit the button to start extraction which INCLUDES pre-infusion. I found this works well for me anyway, I've left the default pre-infusion time and flow rate. IF the roaster has an espresso recipe, I go based off that to help me. Otherwise, my handy dandy book of notes is what I use as a reference along with the pressure indicator (range of 8.5-9.5 at its peak) + the coffee stream it makes is what I'm using more than the duration and time. But for time, I go off roast level to figure out what duration I go for. But I'm far from an expert or connoisseur and if I mess up the syrup and milk I put in my drink can usually cover up most of the mess up.
      I've seen a lot of theories of when to start it and when not to start the timer. Most of the time I've seen that you start it as soon as water hits the puck even in pre-infusion. But I'm sure you'll find another expert explain a different reason and have their own methods and reasons as to why. I think if you pick one method and stick with it and don't play with the pre-infusion variables, then it'll work.

      BDB is the cheaper of all those machines. I haven't played with the others but I am so so happy with mine as is, and from my understanding, you won't get as many features on others.
      I was actually going to originally get the Ascaso Dream, the reason I didn't is they messed up my order and the white was on backorder. I don't think you'd go wrong with either but you'll have to factor in what's more important and see which of the 3 hits the spot for you.

      Did you watch the video end to end? A lot of people click out lol my content isn't for those people. My videos are as long as they need to be for me to provide a complete story. I'm not just going to read specs off a sheet that you can easily find online.
      Now to answer your questions:
      How do you feel about having two separate counter occupying devices?
      >That bothered me at first. I had such a minimal counter space for my pour overs before that occupied so little space and made my minimalist heart happy and now I have not 1 but 2 clunky items that dwarf my hot water dispenser (might make a video of my coffee journey, I dunno if that's content people care for or one that I care for rather). In terms of workflow I'm not walking more than 3 steps to go from one side to the other so it's not a big deal.
      I’d love the Breville DB if they added their “super grinder” (from the Oracle Touch?) to the next version.
      >is the Oracle Touch a better grinder than the one on the Breville Barista Express and their Smart grinder? the whole idea of BDB is not having the grinder and having just the espresso machine. The Oracle Touch is basically the DBD more automated with the grinder, so there is no need for them to add a new product. But maybe they will cuz they have like 10 versions of their lower end machines, but at a higher price bracket and probably lesser sales, it's probably not worth it for them to do.
      I agree with your analysis that this semi-auto hits the best performance to value of the dual boiler “machines”.
      Everything else being equal do you find you are making better shots/drinks when compared to the Cadorna?

      @@GadgetsGearCoffee So. Yep I watched your video until the end, three times to be exact. Don’t think I asked for any specs, nor for you to read them so I’m not sure what you are referring to.
      Yes the grinder on the Oracle Touch is their upgraded ceramic burrs with more settings than the BBE or BBP. I personally don’t want a touch screen, just another thing that can fail. Some coffee RUclipsrs have reported significantly improved grinder results from the grinder in the Oracle Touch compared to the BBE.
      As to your coffee journey, I think there’s an interesting story to be told; of how the pandemic led you to have to create for yourself what it wasn’t so easy for you to procure at work or from a vendor on the way to the office, leading you down a rabbit hole to a new hobby with a delicious finale.
      You might never have discovered your desire to play with the science of coffee and its results.
      I know that I have traveled down a similar path during the past year, Pakt coffee travel kit, Comandante C40 hand grinder, Aram manual espresso maker, to the Gaggia Cadorna (the latter is mostly your fault). It will resonate with some of the folks who come to your channel and potentially they will become subscribers.

      @@JeffJacquesmd the comment about specs was more: I know my videos can be long for some but I go beyond just reading the specs, and asking if you watched it til the end was just me being impressed you watched til the end. I don't pay attention all that much to my stats but sometimes when I'm on the creator side I glance at them and a lottttt of people click out after a few minutes (but I believe this is the case for all creators, especially when things are longer format) - it wasn't an attack on you, if anything I am impressed! And happy? It was like a compliment and thank you
      an integrated grinder would be nice to reduce space, though it would reduce the cup warmers on the top (truthfully I only need 2 cups up there, the espresso cups are just for show I've never used them lol). Though the argument is if it breaks, then you have that big pile of hunk just sitting there. Come to think of that, I think all that empty space in the BDB I noticed is probably to account for the grinder. I didn't check but I suspect that the Oracle Touch and the BDB have the same outer dimensions and same casing (I had filmed something about this but decided to cut it out).

Concerns are shipping costs, possible shipping damage and repair costs. I’m not really sure that I want to put myself through that. So looking at the Breville dual boiler. I have some concerns though. The steam wand seems weak in terms of power. How well can it make a cappuccino? I understand that the Breville has a vibrating pump which I’m told is not as consistent and durable as rotary pumps. Do you have a recommended dose using the stock portafilter basket? I can’t find this information anywhere.
    I’ve tried everything from 18-22g with varying results. Most of the espresso videos suggest fixing your dose before playing with the other factors (like grind size, ratio, etc).
    I’ve had my DB for about a month now and I still can’t seem to find the right dose 😕 and as a result, I still can’t find the reason why my shots are coming out with so many issues (puck too dry, pressure too low, taste very sour or bitter…I’ve had them all). I really would like to just fix the dose first before working out all the other kinks. RIP all my wasted coffee..

      Hey Carl, I feel you. From my understanding the basket is 18-21g. For dark roasts I typically do 18-18.5 and light roasts 19-20g.
      Really focus well on puck prep. You can't rush or skip it. Really get those grinds nice and even. There's also such a thing as grinding too fine. I went through an entire bag once unable to dial in realizing after extraction gets weird after a certain point of grinding
      You may also need to open up the BDB to adjust the OPV, this will void the warranty.

      @@kos492 wow that's west coast and easy coast! Every one of our provinces are quite different though you can kind-of skip the middles one 😬 minus Banff. That place is magical and I highly suggest, it hugs parts of BC so you can easily squeeze that in

      If I could get my hands on one but I don't see that happening :/ or when my channel gets huge enough I have the budget for it

      You can find a comparison of the two, on RUclips from Seattle Coffee Gear. The Apartamento has a better motor, better casing and more power. The Breville has all the extra bells and whistles while the Apartamento is a classic, basic Italian espresso machine.

    You hit the nail on the head, it does make really good coffee but you can't fix it, it isn't meant to last more than 5 years and then it is landfill. I had one, it made great coffee for 5 years of once-a day use and then it stopped working. I replaced it with something that is meant to last and has parts that are replaceable. This really is something worth considering for environmental concerns.

      Not necessarily. If you're handy, it is quite easy to upkeep, there are lots of resources online highlighting what to upkeep when and what to buy (gaskets, etc) so even though the company doesn't want you to fix it, you actually can!

      @@GadgetsGearCoffee well to be honest, it came down more to a price comparison. There were machines out there that I liked more, since I like to always set the parameters myself and the look and feel of it are a bit too modern to me. I can pick a second hand one up for 500 euros though with warranty included so to me thats an absolute steal.

      @@GadgetsGearCoffee I haven't bothered with the science part yet, I'm sure one of these days I'll have one of those myself 😂. I do have some ratios in my mind that I generally use but thus far the only machines I've had have been the sage precision brewer, a mokka pot and a French press along with a hand grinder.
