The only other two accessories I plan to be purchasing are a WTD tool and and portafilter screen. This is an excellent tutorial! The only part that was left out is that the portafilter should be heated up in hot water or by pulling blind shots because the Barista Pro does not heat it up. Also, it doers not warm up the cups.

What a cohesive video 👏🏽 Just a small note regarding the brewing time You can change the brew time in the settings by doing a custom shot to get the right time for the yield you want! 🙏🏽
Thank you for watching! 🙏🏼 oh yeah I started doing that like a week after I put this video out 😅 my updated current routine is up on my channel if you're interested!
Thank you for the kindness! Please check out my video on manual shots. That's one way to control the brew time! I'll be doing a video on how to program a shot soon too (custom shot where you basically pull a manual shot once and then it's programmed in)
I have been binge watching your videos! Honestly; they’re so helpful and so well explained.. I’m beyond impressed. I have watched and subscribed to some big names in the “coffee connoisseur” RUclips content, and while they’re certainly great, you are not far behind at all (if any). You deserve so many more subs! Keep up the good work; one of these days the algorithm god will find you! In the meantime; I just subscribed!!!
One of the best and easily explained videos. Love the way you explain each part. This one deserves more views. Keep creating more. Just got my first Espresso Machine. Will try to follow your instructions.
Try pressing and holding the single shot start button. On most consumer machines you can program the shot time. Let go just before you hit your target, as you explained.
Thank you for this tip! Since I uploaded this video, I've stuck with the press-and-hold double shot button, release when you want pre infusion to stop, and then press once to stop the shot (which I usually do based on espresso output more than time)
I recently acquired a bottomless portafilter from amazon. I was scared because I know these typically do not hide mistakes. I was pleasantly surprised to pull a beautiful double shot the first time. The double sided tamp and distribution tool as well as correct puck prep is everything.
Great explanation! You’re very easy to understand. You can also pause this machine mid grind by pushing the portafilter inward, tap your grinds flat, and restart the grind again. Also this machine has a manual mode. So you can hold down either shot button and it will pre infuse until you let go, when you let go it will start the shot, and press again to stop the shot. I’m about to watch more of your videos! You may have already explained this lol
Thank you so much for watching and for the tips!! I do actually pull my shots "manually" like that daily since this video 😂 And yes you can definitely stop the grinder to tap and restart, but I prefer using a dosing cup now because I can shake the grinds to fluff them up too 🙌🏼
@@HijabsandAprons I think I’m going to get my bf the dosing cup and the stream handle :) and I think I wanna find some cute little sealed containers (similar to old school camera film containers) so he can measure out a weeks worth of coffee at a time :)

Absolutely great video. Best tutorial and description ever from the 1000’s of online videos. Clean, clear and mellow voice-over. You need to join the advertising industry. Great camera and audio recording as well. You covered so many points that many “pro baristas” fail to speak about. Thank you!
My Breville Baritsa Pro arrives tomorrow and this video has definitely been helpful to watch. Very clear and easy to follow. Will definitely be watching this again once my machine arrives!!
How are you enjoying it? My husband just bought me one but not sure if I’m ready to pick it up at Best Buy because I’m not sure this will work for me 😅
Really clear and useful video! Thanks for all the tips. I’ve just started using the Barista Pro myself. However, no matter how much I change the grind setting to finer, I can’t seem to get an extraction time anywhere near 25-30 seconds for my desired yield ratio of 1:2 (18g of coffee to 36g of expresso). The best I got was around 20 seconds when the grind setting was at 1. Perhaps I need to change the internal burr setting to 4 like you did (currently on 6). I’m using a distribution tool like the one you have and think I am tamping down hard enough (but not too hard) so can’t think what else may be causing such a fast extraction aside from the coffee beans themselves. Any tips or hints as to why you (or anyone else reading this) think this may be happening would be really helpful! Thanks in advanced :-)
Thank you so much for watching! Hm..you could try increasing your dose up to 19g, but in my experience I had to adjust the inner burr. At least by one click if not 2. As of late, my doses have mostly been around 18.5g with a grind size of 6-7 and inner burr set to 3. I could've stuck with an inner burr of 4 and a smaller grind size but I'm sticking with it. Hope this helps!
I've literally got the Breville Barista Espresso. Awesome and informative video! I found other creators on RUclips and Instagram talk way too fast and I'd have to go back 10 seconds to re-watch that clip.🙄I didn't have to do that with this video. Thank you!
lolll seeing this comment while actually watching my video back for the first time in a long time! i can definitely tell that this was one of my first voiceovers 😅
Thank you so much. The internal grind setting is not mentioned in the manual of the barrista touch. After having changed the setting to 4, I am now finally able to brew delicious espressi.
@@HijabsandAprons It was. What brewing time do you use for single and double? Or do you leave the original 25 and 30sek and only change grind size and tamper pressure to reach that 1:2 ratio? Kindest regards, Daniel
@@watchdancing Yes I aim for 25-30 seconds for either single or double shot and the rest gets adjusted accordingly. Usually I only have to adjust dose for stepping down to single (I go from 18-18.5g for a double to around 9.5-10g for a single)
@Hijabs and Aprons You do not reduce the time and still achieve a 1:2 ratio? What does the brewery timer say when the first drop falls? My double start after 8 Sekunde of brewing but my single after 4. If I go finer, the the espresso is too thick. The grinding steps seem to be rather big my this/my barista touch.
Thank you for this. I bought the same machine a few weeks ago, and am struggling a bit. Great to see how much the dosing cup and the distributor/tamper assist with your successful workflow. Also - although you don't refer to it in this video, but we do see it a couple of times - great latte-art!
Thanks so much for watching, Richard! I am happy that my video was helpful. Congrats on the new machine! Let me know if you have any questions. I'm happy to try and help wherever I'm able 🙂
The thing that I found that worked for me was actually holding down the single or double shot button to pre infuse the expresó a little longer (mostly the single shot button) for about 5 seconds. Then releasing it and letting it brew for another 20 seconds after that actually manually stopping the machine by pressing it again.
This was incredible. I’m waiting for my machine to arrive :) thank you Breville for being on back order for the last 3 months. I was so nervous but this was so detailed I feel way more prepared. Can’t wait to keep watching your content.
Grind size😊 Inner bur set to finer set (default 6, she set to 4), she says inner bur set to 4 makes it finer. Outer bur set to 15 initially and said it was too fast, watery. Changed outer bur to 10 and shot was fast but still less than the first. Tried outer bur at 7 and was much better. Inner bur 4 and outer bur 6-7 is what she recommended for herself and her beans. General recs: inner bur 4 and start outer bur at 8-9
Yep ! Definitely subscribing :D Your filming skills are goals, so beautiful and relaxing to watch. I recently got a Breville/Sage Dual Boiler and I remember how messy and ridiculous my first shots were 😂 As you said, over time and with passion you start to enjoy the process :) I still have a looong way to go though, especially for the latte art part haha Anyway, thank you for this video ! Gonna binge watch the other ones :D
I personally use both a dosing cup along with a dosing funnel. And it's good to get a dosing funnel that doesn't have the lip that goes inside the rim of the filter basket/portafilter. I then WDT and I don't have to worry about a gap around the inside of the filter basket/portafilter. Just my 2¢ and what my process has evolved into over the years with great repeatable results. Great video! And thanks for sharing!
Thank you for watching and sharing! I agree! My dosing funnel only has a lip that sits on the outside of the portafilter, so it's perfect for when I use my WDT tool now 🙂 though I find it a little difficult to distribute with the WDT tool; I need to experiment/practice and then share my findings. There's gotta be a particular WDT technique that works every time!!
Okay this was so aesthetically pleasing, that sunlight, that chrome, that golden coffee créma 🤌🏼 but also really helpful! Also, who knew there was so much math involved in pulling the perfect shot. 😭 I’m going to try this over the weekend and see how many tries it takes me to get something decent. 😂 great video!
Thank you so so much, Felicia! Comments like this make my day 🙏🏼 I hope it's a good starting point for you and helps you get close to a good shot quicker! 😊 And ooooh girl we didn't even start talking about refining the shot and how it tastes 😂 but tbh I won't even get into that. Too busy focusing on steaming the milk for prime latte art practice 😬
Barista Express user here, I usually bang down the portafilter on the mat after transferring the grounds from the dosing cup. That way they even out more to where the lips were. Hope you're using a slightly bigger basket than the stock one before doing so, as 19 grams could potentially be brimming over unless it actually settles just at the edge. Also if you feel extra finicky, use a WDT tool (acupuncture needles held in place by a handle) to de-clump and fluff your grounds before running the distributor over. It could eliminate channelling in your shot, as was kinda happening in your video lol. Just extra steps to ensure a satisfying flow of extraction, is all. Keep it up.
When I started I was doing all that mess too, using towels under the whole procedure and spilling coffee grounds everywhere... I solved most of the mess by simply doing the distribution over my knock box, and then using a portafilter station for the tamping, my portafilter station is also a distribution and tamping station so it makes everything organized and beautifully displayed on my coffee countertop.
This video should be attached with every Breville espresso machine sold. I have been making espresso at home for many, many years and I get asked to help people new to at home espresso. This will now be my go-to video that I share to help people. Thank you for a job well done.
Thanks for that very well done video! Funny, I have the same scale, but from a different brand... I also have a Breville, but lower end one, the Barista Express, and now, I just bought a Lelit Bianca and I have to relearn everything... or to readjust at least. That's what made me watch your video. I noticed that even with the same bag of coffee, I have to readjust the grind size regularly. As time goes, I have to set it finer and finer. I think the variation of amount of humidity in the air also affects the required grind size.
Great explanation! My extraction time is so short and I was wondering what I could do to fix it. Will try to change each part to find my best extraction for the coffee beans I’m using. Thanks for making this video!

Probably one of the best video's for beginners out there! James hoffman is great and all but i dont wanna know the science just yet i just wanna know how to dial in my espresso machine!! Thanks!
use a puck screen for heat transfer, maybe it will turn out better. if the puck is usually made of stainless steel. but if it is made of copper, the result is even better
Thank you! I just got a barista touch and was feeling very intimidated as I have no experience with espresso machines. I was feeling discouraged cause I heard it's difficult to dial in but changing the Burr grinder and measuring the beans was a good starting point. I was able to get a decent shot with crema on my second attempt and will continue playing around with my grind. Thank you!
Dont need any tools to even the coffee in the portafilter. You just tap the portafilter a bit on the table to distribute the inside, then with a normal tamper you turn a few times to distribute the top. Finally you press the tamper. My espresso are so good every time
I have the same machine and this was a really helpful video for visualizing how I can take my process to the next level with the gear I already have. Thanks!
That's great to hear! I'm a firm believer that you should work with what you've got before adding to your toolkit (definitely applies to my camera gear too haha). Thank you for watching and good luck in your espresso journey!
I’ve watched many professional baristas incapable of explaining it this well. They’re always going on about the bars this and bars that. We know a good cup requires a minimum bar pull 🤦🏻♂️ You did what they can’t Bravo! 👏 👏👏
Hi Hijabs! 🙂 I've had my Barista Express for 7 and 1/2 years. Send it in to Breville for repairs only to find out it's busted, for good. (I used it...to death.) B-ville was kind enough to discount me on a new machine and I selected the Pro. Looking at videos for the Pro I came across your video. After viewing many others I found your video to be well organized, informative and relevant. You obviously done your homework and took the time to adapt it into a useful video. Nice work and Thank you!
I’m just learning to use the same machine. Changed the inner grind to 3 and the outside to 6 with 19 gr of Colombian coffee from startbucks beans. Used the tools to disperse it and stamp it. Press the pre infuser the 7 seconds and when it’s near to the ratio 1:2 I stop but there is not way to stop it to come super watery and dark brown. Like the honey color barely come and not thick at all. I even used the outside grind option to all the way to 1 and still it is not making sense, only improve a little bit. I don’t think I should put the inner grind into 1. Like my brew time don’t reach even 20 seconds and only if I pre I fuse it like 13 seconds… I just used one full bag today and haven’t be able to get the expresso nearly acceptable and rich, feeling frustrate it bu t will try again tomorrow. I read somewhere that if the bean is older than two months this may happens and well my beans are around 4 month ago that I bought the machine but I got lose so I stoped trying… any suggestions? I really would appreciate it
Yes older beans lose their.. like, pungency and so you've got to grind old beans finer. If it's coming out watery, then you haven't created enough pressure. Make sure you're tamping until there's no more room to press. A grind size of 1 and 19g dose still comes out fast? How fast??
I have watched so many videos on how to make the best espresso and NONE have explained the process as well as you…I stopped using my machine because no matter what I did it didn’t taste good. I think this will help…can’t wait to try!
This was just a very nice Video, so first at all, thanks a lot! I have my barista pro for maybe 3 years and I've got a lot of very nice 53,3mm tools I can highly recommend (tamper and distributor by normcore, wdt tool and a funnel wich you can fix on the porta filter) but I was not drinking too much coffee the last time and I was a bit frustrated with some new special beans and how fast my pour was. So I needed your video to save some beans and get an idea again for the correct setting! Buy the way I really like your voice, it is so calming. I could run this video in the evening to sleep better 😅! I wish you the best and greetings from Germany Tom (Sorry for my bad English skills)
Nice movie. I personally focus on 1. Grind setting 2. Dose weight 3. Temperature 4. Time 5. Output weight. Best to keep 4 fixed and adjust only 1 at a time. Grind setting and Temperature are the best to adjust to get to a desired taste. Of course nice looking shot is nice but you want to get the best taste.

Also why are you stating your subjective preferences like they are objective facts? Some people enjoy manual espresso as a hobby - you obviously don’t, that’s cool, but no one asked you? And sorry to tell you but no one cares what you like! :)
So why don’t you take your hateful sub zero iq elsewhere and stop advertising your idiocy in this comment section yeah?
I've been watching a ton of espresso videos from baristas and the usual experts....but your video really made it simple/practical to understand
What a cohesive video 👏🏽
Just a small note regarding the brewing time
You can change the brew time in the settings by doing a custom shot to get the right time for the yield you want! 🙏🏽
Thank you for watching! 🙏🏼 oh yeah I started doing that like a week after I put this video out 😅 my updated current routine is up on my channel if you're interested!
How do you change the brew time? I have the espresso machine in this video. This video was excellent by the way. I have watched twice now.
Thank you for the kindness! Please check out my video on manual shots. That's one way to control the brew time! I'll be doing a video on how to program a shot soon too (custom shot where you basically pull a manual shot once and then it's programmed in)

This has to be the most in-depth and helpful review on dialing in the espresso. Thanks so much!
I can't believe i always learn a new things everytime i watch Espresso video! Thanks for sharing!
One of the best and easily explained videos. Love the way you explain each part. This one deserves more views. Keep creating more. Just got my first Espresso Machine. Will try to follow your instructions.
Thank you ! 4, 4 setting works for me. Loved the video. Simple and to the point. to the point, no bullshit. Amazing video.
I’ve had my Breville Espresso Machine for about a year now and I think this is a very good guide and I do pretty much the same things! Nice job!
Thank you so much for watching and for the kind feedback!
The double sided tamp and distribution tool as well as correct puck prep is everything.
very informative one of the best on setting up a shot on a Breville
This great for beginners and those that forget some of the basics. You have done a great job here, very informative!
I do actually pull my shots "manually" like that daily since this video 😂 And yes you can definitely stop the grinder to tap and restart, but I prefer using a dosing cup now because I can shake the grinds to fluff them up too 🙌🏼
@@HijabsandAprons I think I’m going to get my bf the dosing cup and the stream handle :) and I think I wanna find some cute little sealed containers (similar to old school camera film containers) so he can measure out a weeks worth of coffee at a time :)
the salam aleikom was so comforting to hear
😊 👋🏼
Agreed
Hands down the most informative video for someone wanting to get stuck in. Thank you
Wow, thank you for such an easy to understand, clear and enjoyable video!
My Barista Pro is due to arrive tomorrow and I have a lot to learn (previously just used Tassimo pods). I didn’t realise the coffee rabbit hole was so deep. Love the video and your setup, keeping everything clean and tidy!
Need to look into that distribution/tamping tool you have there. Thank you!
You are great at making this seem simple!
Bravo !
This was such a good explanation and beautiful to watch. We did a video on getting the best out of your Breville machine, and we have some similar ideas but you’ve outdone me with how clearly you explained the detail or dialing in 🙌🏼
I enjoy watching your stunning videography more than my face much more 😂
Well done 🙏🏻
- Jimmy
Thank you so much! I really appreciate your kind words!
Getting a comment like this from Artisti Coffee Roasters is a serious complement!! So proud of you 😱🤩

Of all the espresso videos I've watched, I enjoyed yours the most. Thank you for your articulate words.
Thank you so much, I *really* appreciate it 🙏🏼
I set my inner grinder to number 2 and my grindsize is about 07-06 and it’s my go to settings for months now when dialing in espresso 😊
Same here! I use the same machine, and I also set it to ‘inner 2’ with a grind size of 4-5. I thought I was the only one using such fine settings😅
I've literally got the Breville Barista Espresso. Awesome and informative video! I found other creators on RUclips and Instagram talk way too fast and I'd have to go back 10 seconds to re-watch that clip.🙄I didn't have to do that with this video. Thank you!
1.5 speed, thank me later 😊
lolll seeing this comment while actually watching my video back for the first time in a long time! i can definitely tell that this was one of my first voiceovers 😅
I already saw the length and was going 2x just to get under 10 minutes
I enjoyed 1.25
@@HijabsandApronsI love hearing all the little nuances. Please keep it up!
ABSOLUTELY
Thank you so much. The internal grind setting is not mentioned in the manual of the barrista touch. After having changed the setting to 4, I am now finally able to brew delicious espressi.
oh wow that's a bit odd/frustrating! i'm so happy that you discovered a solution and that it's going well for you now!! 🙌🏼🙌🏼
Yesss!! I started pulling manual shots like a month after I published this video 😅 I definitely recommend that as well!
This was incredible. I’m waiting for my machine to arrive :) thank you Breville for being on back order for the last 3 months.
I was so nervous but this was so detailed I feel way more prepared. Can’t wait to keep watching your content.
Thank you so much for watching! Congrats on your new machine! I hope you're enjoying it 🙂
Grind size😊
Inner bur set to finer set (default 6, she set to 4), she says inner bur set to 4 makes it finer.
Thank you soo much for the support and kind words 🙏🏼 I knowww it's challenging but so rewarding too! Hope you enjoy my other work too! 😊
Keep it up.
Thanks, you deserve more, but here's something!
Thank you so much! 🙏🏼 If you've ever got any espresso questions or things you want to discuss, feel free to join my Patreon!
I'm new to this. And this is one of the best explanations of the process I've seen yet. Bravo.
This video should be attached with every Breville espresso machine sold. I have been making espresso at home for many, many years and I get asked to help people new to at home espresso. This will now be my go-to video that I share to help people. Thank you for a job well done.
Thank you so much for watching and for the positive feedback! I really appreciate it 🙏🏼
Glad I found your tutorial! Nice job on the production, too.
Thank you so much! I really appreciate it 🙏🏼
I learnt the correct tamp by using a set of bathroom scales and would tamp to about 14kgs of downward pressure
@@eikoncalista I'm happy to help!! Good luck 😊
This was a very well-written production. It is much appreciated.
Thank you so much, I really appreciate it! I hope you found it helpful 🙂
Most helpful video I’ve found after owning my machine over six months. You had me at “shart!” I thank you. Your delivery and presentation are right on point and easy to understand. I’m headed straight to my machine to calibrate.
thank you so much for watching!! omg lol i'm glad you appreciated the humor i left in 😅 good luck and enjoy!
I like the content so much I liked it at the end only to realise I have already liked and subscribed half way through the video. Thank u for the guidance. So easy to understand..
Best explanation video out there. Had no idea you could change the internal burr
One of the best introductory videos on espresso.
Thank you!
Great explanation of the process to get a good cup of espresso.
Dont need any tools to even the coffee in the portafilter. You just tap the portafilter a bit on the table to distribute the inside, then with a normal tamper you turn a few times to distribute the top. Finally you press the tamper.
My espresso are so good every time
Great video! Very helpful! Thank you! May I ask where did you buy the wood portafilter you use in the video? Thank you again !
Thank you! Most of my stuff is linked in the description! www.hijabsandaprons.com/coffee
Excellent explanation. The quality of video and audio is really nice, too.
I gotta say this is an awesome video. Probably the best one of its kind that I have seen. Bravo.
this is probably the most helpful and well-organized guide that hits all the key points. Can't wait to give my espresso machine another try tomorrow
That’s was really useful. I’m still leaning and planing to buy my own tools.
Awesome job!!! TY! Your voice is a pleasure to listen to!!
Thank you for watching!!
I'm on grinder size 18 on the breville grinder machine. Brew has always been been awesome.
the newer machines come with a different set of burrs (better suited for espresso at the default setting)!
I’ve watched many professional baristas incapable of explaining it this well. They’re always going on about the bars this and bars that. We know a good cup requires a minimum bar pull 🤦🏻♂️
You did what they can’t Bravo! 👏 👏👏
Awesome video. I bought a couple of the accessories you were using.
Thank you so much for making this so easy to understand.
I'm so happy to hear this, you're welcome!
4 weeks of owning an espresso machine and you can pull out amazing latte like that! WOW
Hi Hijabs! 🙂
I've had my Barista Express for 7 and 1/2 years.
How fast??
Love this video!! Thinking of getting my first espresso machine and this video just got me more excited about it!! 😊
ahh that's so exciting!! hope you love it! 😊
I wish you the best and greetings from Germany
Tom
(Sorry for my bad English skills)
Nice movie. I personally focus on 1. Grind setting 2. Dose weight 3. Temperature 4. Time 5. Output weight. Best to keep 4 fixed and adjust only 1 at a time. Grind setting and Temperature are the best to adjust to get
to a desired taste. Of course nice looking shot is nice but you want to get the best taste.
Thank you for explaining every step in an easy to understand way. I now know why my first 3 attempts came out watery.
I've watched a lot of dial in videos. Your video has been the most helpful. It's unpretentious and spoken in an easy to understand manner. Thank you!
This is probably the most thorough explanation video on espressos. Thanks!
Your work on this video is incredible.
