  • This is my detailed building review of the LEGO Technic 42136 John Deere 9620R 4WD Tractor set. I also took the opportunity to compare it to the custom JCB Fastrac Tractor designed by SaperPL to see what is achievable at this scale, and how do small scale stock sets compare to MOCs in general.

    A lot of the newer LEGO sets (particularly CITY) have celebratory rays, sparkles, and stars when an important phase of construction is complete. I believe it is meant to encourage younger builders with a small visual reward. I think it's pretty cute and harmless.

    Cool comparison, and fair analysis of both sets. As an entry level Technic set for younger builders it's about perfect in build/function, and detail. Really like the additional features of the fan model, and it really shows what can be accomplished in smaller scale. Lego take note. Also great selection of army green pieces for moc builders.

    I wonder why we don't see that many agricultural vehicles in Technic. You'd think they'd be perfect to make Technic sets out of with all the swappable machinery. Imagine modular sets with tractors, trailers and all kinds of farming equipment that could be swapped around. Why does this not exist?

    • @RacingBrick
      @RacingBrick  2 года назад +10

      This would probably require a theme on its own. Each vehicle supposed to have the same scale, and that's quite a challenge. LEGO Technic vehicles are usually scaled to the available wheels, and this would require a different approach.

    • @SaperPl1
      @SaperPl1 2 года назад +5

      @@RacingBrick I wonder if that's a problem here though. It doesn't need to be all licensed, I think, and also some simplification when it comes to scale should be okay if we're talking about entry level sets for kids. I'm more prone to believe there is some kind of metric of mechanism complexity where it comes to those and thus for example designing forklift specifically around the big gear rack with its enclosure happens. For wheels, there are a lot of wheel sizes made by Lego and we've seen that Lego may use wheels that don't match the theme, so I wouldn't say it's the main reason for varying scale.

      I have been asking myself the same question for years. A whole Technic agricultural series would be perfect. I'm sure it would sell in great numbers too. Many children are highly interested in tractors and for adults it would make great collectible items.
      A collection of different looking tractors, attachments with different functions, some trailers, all in matching scale. It can easily be made with existing parts, there are so many different parts available. Especially when most of the sets are custom designs and no licence stuff. Lego made custom designs all the time in the past and many of them are legends now.
      Maybe they could even do a small scale series and a large scale series in parallel.

    I think the john deere is a very good reprensentation of the real things, the 9r series tractors are very common in other countries, yes you will see many with double wheel configs, but that depends on the region, the jcb is too big to be next to the john deere, nobodys fault just to get the features in the jcb it had to be bigger, I got this set and put it side to side next to a britains john deere 9r (no vid just for my own) and that are pretty similar, I would say this is a great set, and I hope that we see more like this, also would be fun to make it a 9rx.

    After having built the Lego John Deere Set and the SaberPL Fastrac (attachments still missing), I have to say both have their up and down sides.
    The Lego set is nice for a 30 Euro Technic set. I don't think it is too expensive. The Tractor is a nice design, I really like it. More options for mounting attachments would be nice but why should lego design mounting points for non existant attachments. The trailer looks quite incomplete when built in stock configuration but it is a nice base to be modified. I made the walls higher and added a simple tailgate, now it is fine to me. Maybe Lego should have done that from the start and just raised the price a bit for the extra parts.
    The Fastrac basically is a nice design. It looks nice and it has good functionality. Unfortunately it has has two flaws and one illegal building technique. The bigger flaw is, it has a rigid rear axle without differential. This is a big disadvantage especially when driving backwards. Just like it is on Lego's Mini Claas. Currently I have no good idea to change that. The second flaw is the exhaust is not being securely mounted to the model. It can easily be modified: Get rid of the 1x1 round plates, the 4L bar and the axle pin. Install a 3L pin with stop bush, a 3L axle and for beuaty a second 1L beam on the opposite side. The illegal mounting of the front bumper can be corrected by changing the two black pins to 3/4 L pins (dark bluish gray for the optics). The passenger seat is a sketchy design but there are not too many alternatives in that scale.
    The designer avoided using blue and red pins where possible. Everybody who is willing to sacrifice a bit of the paint sceme to save some money should carefully check the parts list before ordering.

    Damn, never considered that the gear with the axle pin sticking out was never used in a Technic set before. It's weirdly useful when building compact functions, so I guess there aren't many opportunities to utilise it since technic sets get so large.

    The way the body of the John Deere pivots in the middle is realistic for that size tractor. The MOC one looks like a weird scale, like it is trying to be a big beefy tractor but with a layout more like a smaller tractor. I'm sure there are tractors that are like what it represents but I don't know them so it doesn't feel realistic to me. The John Deere one does though. I'm quite familiar with the bigger tractors like the Steigers since my brother drives them.

    Funny how you mention not being the type to change minds on things, since you might have changed my mind on this set. I was thinking it was probably pretty substandard, seeing as it was a low-function licensed set, but your review helped put it into perspective. I might even pick it up if I happen across it! That said, I wish I could just by SaperPL's moc outright, it seems like a better fit for what I personally want out of Technic.

    I noticed that the rear of the John Deere is kind of wonky. It is not as strong as the rest of the build. Nothin will come loose, but the steering gear on the rear can move side to side a lot. I'll try to fix that on my model. I also want to upgrade the seat for mini figures. I'll also try to make a plow or something as these large tractors are often used for plowing. It just looks weird in front of a small trailer. I think I'll try to add a front weight too. I already upgraded it with double wheels. It looks much better.
