      very true. most of the cars in the lineup (those and trains are the only things i’m interested in from TLG nowadays) that are 18+ i would have loved when i was 12-14. i think this one almost takes some appreciation of modern engineering to fully enjoy the build.

  • @Raelhorn

    The more I look into this set, it looks like what really happened is that Lego ran into some real engineering problems and materials limitations while designing this set. It's novel and impressive looking, but I can't help but wonder if the noticeable changes from the real thing are simply because they couldn't find a half-decent way to build this set and still have it be more or less "functional". They probably could have resolved the issue with more new parts... but that would turn this set into a sunk-cost monstrosity (for Lego).
    To point out an easy difference, the lack of counterweights on the back of crane's main body. I think this would have resulted in the body not balancing well on the central ring. It could have also become too heavy to turn around. Similarly, the tracks dancing around with the top spins means that the tracks are simply too light. Which means bigger tracks (perhaps even a double-track system)... and stronger/more motors to turn everything. Issues like these keep cropping up, and before long you find out the biggest limiting factor is that you're working with plastic and not steel.
    And I wouldn't be surprised if the crane model mentioned was the original intent for this set... and simply didn't work, resulting in a scaled back but still very functional version of a crawler crane.
    And for anyone who has been around cranes... seeing the tracks lift off the ground *AT ALL* is a terrifying sight.
    The guys running the excavators might have fun doing that, but you never see that with the cranes. Luckily, this is just Lego.
    To comment on the price? It's definitely too much, and I think the price is intentionally inflated to cover the bigger than anticipated design costs along and to offset the expected lower sales. While the price appears to be the biggest complaint, the other issues with the set would have inevitably come to light. I think Lego is expecting only the most dedicated and die-hard fans to get this one, and are bumping the price in an attempt to off-set the already incurred costs during the design phase. I think this is definitely not a "price per piece" issue so much as it ended up being a much bigger design cost.
    On the bright side, it's very likely that Lego learned quite a few lessons from designing this set, which will go to helping design future sets.

      Would have been nice to see it they used metal wrapped in plastic counterweights instead, would have added more lifting capacity. Also could account for the much higher price as the counterweights won't get much use in other sets.

      I think their legal department put their foot down. Cranes are very tricky and need very skilled operators assisted by loads of sensors not to tip over. I once built a big Lego crane with regular Lego Technic parts and started fooling around with ever heavier weights and counterweights. All fine and dandy right up to the point the load let go and my crane turned into a trebuchet. The hook came nowhere near my face but with less luck could have taken out an eye. Not something you want to sell nowadays.

    Each crane has a lifting diagram (in the cabin also). If you check a real one, that might have incredible low lifting weight capacity in flat angles. If you make a linear calculation: 1) 1 dimension ratio to the weight; 2) rational weight difference (because it is made of plastic). Then you can get how much the lego version should lift in what angle

    I don't know much about crane, but I was expecting the counterweights to be moved further back in order to compensate for heavy loads. At first, I thought that would be linked to the overload detector (either by a motor, or just geometry with a shaft pulling/pushing them away from the center of gravity.

    Thank you for this incredibly thorough review! While I still don't believe that this set's pricepoint is justified, it's clear that much of this set's budget went to large, specialized parts and pieces which will be of use to people who want to build large Technic constructions quickly. The new large frames will be of great use in many MOCs, including those which are primarily composed of System bricks (building a bridge, anyone?) However, the new counterweight pieces seem practically useless outside of this niche scenario. I definitely wish that LEGO had made a more versatile piece that had Technic pin holes on the sides and System studs on the top (with anti-studs on the bottom) so they could be used in other situations.

      Well around 1400 of the 2900 parts are pins and tiny axles which cost around 1-2 cents a piece even on the after market and less for Lego themselves.
      This results in over 600$ for the remaining 1500 parts which is 40 cents a piece.
      That’s a ridiculous price. The entire set is 23 cents per piece but 10 cents per piece is already expensive when compared to their sets from a few years ago and hyper expensive compared to other brick companies.
      And the other companies are often or even most of the time of better quality

    • @kentslocum
      @kentslocum Год назад +1

      @@Dominicus1165 LEGO has never been an affordable toy. It is a luxury. This set is overpriced, even for a LEGO set. However, I was trying to look on the bright side. Personally, I stopped caring about price-per-piece a very long time ago, since price-per-gram is a far better indicator of value. Large pieces weigh more than small pieces because they contain more plastic. Electronic components like hubs and motors are more complex still. So $700 starts to make a lot more sense--it's still nonsense, but sense all the same.

    The price is insane even for lego. Don’t tell me that licence for Liebherr is more expensive that ones for Lamborghini, Ferrari or Bugatti. And those sets was about €350. And now, crane with 2800+ pcs for 750-800 euros? WTF? There is something rotten in Billund, Denmark..

  • @loganmadson5465
    @loganmadson5465 Год назад

    With how much of a challenge it must have been to get this set to even lift this much, I can't help but think it might have been a good idea to drop most/all of the functionality. The lack of all the counterweights and motors would likely drop the price by a few hundred dollars as well.

  • @joelbradley5198
    @joelbradley5198 Год назад

    It's functioning just like an actual crane would behave. Of course you can't pick out of chart at that radius.
    Also, the button that let's you override the safety features is also present in real cranes, "turning the keys."

    I feel there’s clever people out there who will be able to make their own heavier counterweights for it, though that would probably put more stress on the parts

    I was expecting the counterweights to swing out when a heavier load is lifted, maintaining balance.
    I wonder how long it will be until a video is posted where someone makes the booms longer.
    I plan on buying this set.

    The crane looks very impressive, I agree. However, the build doesn't look like a challenge. For 700 dollars it could be more challenging.

    Try to put more weight on the back of the crane and see how much load really the motors can withstand, and the overhaul crane assembly.

    if i could recomend a custom build lego set it would be the 11200 leibherr ltm crane by jeroen ottens design. it costed me $400 for all the parts and the instructions, took me around 3 months to build, and it could reach up to 6 ft into the air! it is an incredible crane and i would love to see you build it!

    This crane is absolutely gorgeous and has unique functionality but the thing is the counterweight problem which is not enough hopefully later this year on eBay we get counterweights for sale to add more. It should have came with pins to lock down the counter weight so it doesn’t fall.

    LEGO are never supposed to be proportional to the real things, otherwise there'll be no modulars, speed champions, space, etc. Everybody with enough bricks can build models true to the real thing, it just takes time and money. LEGO sets capture the essence of the real thing and shrink it down to play friendly size and proportion, that's the art.

    • @RacingBrick
      @RacingBrick  Год назад

      Well, it you check the licensed Technic sets of the past years all of them was aiming for correct overall proportions. Not all details might be captured perfectly, but in the case of this set all main components are way off compared to each other.

    I would use one plastic counterweight to make a mould and pour them in zink or something. The heavier counterweights should increase lifting performance.

    have lego said what the weights are made of? have you compared with similar size of system bricks (dense as possible)? I'm also surprised about the superstructure rotation speed - don't the more recent motors allow for variable speed control?

    • @RacingBrick

      They didn't say anything, they look like solid plastic. Motor speed could be easily lower, it totally depends on the app
