So what do you think? Are the numbers accurate? Is S$1,600 a month truly enough for an individual to get by living simply in Singapore, assuming of course household expenses such as housing costs are shared. Or is it plain naivety to expect people to feel they have enough based off that? Is it a matter of mindset or just plain old reality?

A bit tough even if you are single. But if your housing is fully paid for and you strip urself of luxuries such as having a car, eating out at expensive restaurants and going for holidays on a frequent basis, u can actually stretch your dollar. If u wan a lower cost of living, then rent out your current bode n stay in bintan/batam. JB is quite expensice despite out stronger currency.

Hypothetically, yes this is enough! Assuming you paid up your mortgage or your repayment on the mortgage is really minuscule. At $1600, assuming $0 on mortgage or rent (perhaps you struck a windfall), splitting it between public transportation, 90% groceries and minimal expensive social gatherings) i figure it’s possible to allocate $250, $600, $500 and the remainder for bills etc. but boy you have to go hardcore public transport (no grab :))

Hi Jean, thank you for your videos. I had enough of the unreasonable people and the demands from me as a worker in Singapore. I'm not financially insecure as I came from a relatively comfortable home and my parents owned private properties in Singapore back then. I have migrated out of Singapore to a western country over 15 yrs ago and I have since been always grateful to have made that decision to quit the nonsensical rat race like you mentioned in your video the 'survival mode' mentality of Singaporeans. Now I live with purpose in my adopted country and enjoy very much the work-life balance, where you can choose how you want to work and your employer respects you for your work. My employer for example prefer you to have an opinion and contribute and have a thinking brain rather than to be a drone and follow orders. Thanks for your videos.

Jean, that’s got to be one of your best videos. The rat race is truly horrible and driven by FOMO & family/society expectations, it becomes intolerable. Your description of being in perpetual “survival mindset” is so true. We are just never content with our lot in life. When is enough enough? I know I struggle with that predicament.
Your life and example is so refreshing. I listen to your videos and think, yes I can do that too. And that inspire me. Thank you.

Hi A, thank you for the very kind feedback. Living in Singapore can become akin to being in a very small echo chamber so it gets very hard to tune out social pressure and societal and familial expectations in that very compressed environment. I feel we have all been bred as Singaporeans to be extremely financially insecure so to sit back and stop striving really fights our most basic instincts. Its easier for me because i am removed from that environment, but i am rooting for you back home in SG to find your oasis in your mind!

I am probably double your age and I found out a few years back that I have to stop striving and working at jobs that stressed me out (Covid actually expedited the process). I resigned from teaching as a teacher in government school due to the stress. For over ten years ,I chose to lead a simple life being a tutor. My earnings are humble as a home tutor but I have 0 stress. It's only when I got older now that I start to worry about whether I will have enough for retirement etc. And the added worries come from seeing my peers who are now earning 5 figures per month or at least $6k a month. Some people actually told me , " Go and figure a second income " and " Don't you feel one's worth is determined by how much they earn ?" . Singaporeans are extremely money minded. For me,I know having peace of mind is more important. So I'll stop comparing .

Hi Peg, I totally get what you’re saying. Even here in Bali, when I meet other Singaporeans, the conversation invariably still circles around how much we all make, the value of the places we live in, whether we drive a car or bike blah blah. I can still feel the Singaporean in me wiggling a bit in discomfort in response to the pseudo brag conversation lol. But once I leave that space n those people, it’s easy to just forget about them and carry on w my real life, my furry dogs, my garden, my hubs. That is the real life and that’s what really matters. We all gotta plan for a retirement but it doesn’t have to be diamond studded. Remember ur last 10 years of a real life, as opposed to constant striving.

As a fellow teacher, I say consider retiring somewhere cheap, and net work in this very connected online world and conduct your tutoring online - it is fast becoming the norm now. Singaporeans are so spoiled and thinking tht moving to another country is traumatic, that is just mad. It starts with one having an open mind.

Hi Jean, just seeing this now looks like it was posted last year but excellent, as your vids are. And having the courage to mention 'the end' because it is a topic most people avoid, but whe're clarity reveals what is truly important but by then of course, too late Although I am all for self-improvement, and you are a advocate of learning new things it is important to distinguish where it stops becoming beneficial to a person's health and well-being. Like many things in life, it's a fine line. Striving for the top rung seems to be in most cultures, and can be addictive. Sincerely appreciate the effort you put into these vids and as obvious in the comments, many enjoy them and find them beneficial. All the best from the beach how much Southern California. The Singapore model is very interesting, At 38 and chilling is awesome, I have been dedicating my life to the putting in for the company's that i worked for, but only to realize now very late that they can and will replace you. I am now needing to re think what is left of my life. Hello Jean. Just would like to say everyone is special and you are a very special person. Thank you for taking your time to share your experiences and insights with us. I’m sure it helps others with staying grounded and finding aspirations to achieve their goals in life. For me it is not the “Enough “ that I need to find, it is finding what I want to do next. You touched on topics of Stephen Covey and I totally agree an abundance mentality is a key step to success and happiness no matter how each of us, defines it. Also knowing what is truly important.

Very good assessment about your life & discussion about 'Enough is enough'. Yes, I do agree with a lot of your advice. However, you did not mention about your marital bliss. You are very fortunate to be happily married to a handsome, cute Russian who share your aspiration, dreams & life style - living in spiritual, beautiful & magical Bali.
I am also married to a wonderful husband & we live in small home with a lovely garden in a nice Dutch village. Not everyone is so fortunate & even those who inherited a wealthy life style may not be happy because they are cannot be their TRUE self or have the FREEDOM to do as they please. Some people have the liberty to dream & quite often realise their dreams - like you have done in Bali ! I love Bali too. Gardening is my passion & I managed to bring Bali into my garden. It will be my legacy after 42 years of development & evolution.
The Netherlands is a very free country and married gays have equal rights. We are accepted by our neighbours ( their kids play in our garden & more than 100 guests attended our wedding). This is just a peek into our Gay & normal life style in Holland.

I’m very happy to read about your life in Holland. Back home in SG it’s still considered too “alternative” I guess for you to be as comfortable and open as you have described your current life to be. Yes, I too feel very fortunate to have met my hubs and have the marriage I have. I was in fact, before him, not expecting to be able to find someone who would share my dreams and values and goals in life and who would work together w me to move in the same directions. It’s the grace of the universe that we have the partners we have yes?

Hi Jean: Excellent content, so meaningful, reflective and it is worth a self-evaluation. When is enough, enough? I think for the most part, like yours in Bali, I have a chance to explore US and found a greener pasture. Every morning, I enjoy my front lawn and trees, seeping hot coffee and doing my yoga stretch. At any time, I would lounge in my backyard awaiting for a scenic sunset. Till these days, I still love SG for its hustle-bustling life hoping that a MRT train would not run me over!

Here in the US, many people think they can retire on their Social Security check, but that is not so. Even though you own your own home, you still have to pay for property and insurance. Looking back I feel I wasted decades of my life working for corporations but I needed the money and was driven to attain the job status. When I was young, growing up in America, the biggest push from my community, family, and friends was that I had to go to college. I did what my family, community, and friends expected of me, I graduated from college. The next big step was getting a job with my degree. Shortly after graduation, I bought a condo, and a truck and my student loans became due. I was so overwhelmed with debt, that I worked as a teacher from 7am to 15:00 then went to a gym where I worked from 17:00 to 23:00. During the summer I worked for the State of Alaska as a wildland firefighter or bush firefighter. I did that for three years, working constantly with three jobs for three years. I realized that was exhausting and getting into debt was not for me. I apparently paid everything off and that was the most miserable part of my life.

I dun, however, encourage the thinking of "enough is enough". Sure, we should avoid the trapping of "going after one challenge after another" just bcoz everyone else is doing it. You have a competitive spirit starting in childhood years. It is this spirit in you that made you strived so hard and burnt out in the early adulthood. While most of us are mediocre and have learnt to live with contentment and live at our own pace and still contribute to Singapore economy, society and our families. Revisit the good old Chinese fable of the rabbit and tortoise race.

    • @JeanVoronkova
      @JeanVoronkova  Год назад

Haha that’s really funny! So it’s because I excelled - in the specialists singapore system which they spent more money to create to identify and groom people like me - n that’s why I burnt out? And according to you the secret of to a great life is mediocrity? Wow that’s a first. The fable of the rabbit and the tortoise is really about timing the exertions of your efforts so u can run the long race, not a sprint, and remaining humble even if you have a head start to not assume you’ve alr won the race until it’s over. Perhaps you shd revisit your reading and comprehension of it. And believe it or not, I still pay taxes in singapore even tho I don’t live there, and I still take care of my folks, in other ways aside from throwing lots of money at them perhaps, but they’re very much in my life.

There are people in my family who are doctors and earn exponentially more than me but are still desperately working more and more because it’s never enough. Not only that, but my sister and her family- their way of life is so geared towards constant stimulation, ADD, distraction, and entertainment, that they go around dragging other people down and looking at others like myself and finding ways to put me down. But they know deep down that I have something they don’t. Even though my income is only a fraction of theirs, because I live on passive income, I have full freedom over my time and I value my freedom and time and inner journey above all else. They then try to barge into my life with their need for distraction and entertainment and then try to tell me that what I have is not enough and I have to have what they have like luxury items and experiences. But they have no peace of mind, and I have no desire to live like them. Constantly on their phones trying to get the next fix of stimulation. No thanks. I am satisfied with what I have and need more boundaries from people like this

One needn’t strive at the breakneck speed that you resented from school to career. It’s all about conscious balance, or moderation.
Life isn’t a sprint to be hated. It’s a marathon to be celebrated along the way.
You seem to be peering at the rear view mirror of your past life way too often to make you feel good for your present one.
I sense there’s some misgivings or discomfort to live the life of a retiree at your age, with all the attendant woes like money, uncertainty and insecurity that will only compound as you age.
Get back to the fast lane, but pick a speed of your choice to live not exist, with all the financial stability and security that comes with a career. Many will kill over what you gave up.
