The hardest thing about my Asian upbringing was fear of making mistakes...I realized in the real world that people make mistakes. It has really helped pull me out of that trapped mentality. Your video is so encouraging. Thank you again. ❤️❤️🙏🙏
Asian upbringing too and same same. I've ended up making so many mistakes this last year however, and I have to say it's been so much fun, I don't know why I was worried in the first place. It's liberating to have the mentality of a kid painting on literally everything but the canvas. Paint the walls, the floor, your face...it's fun to make a mess, and you learn a lot more in the process as well.
No such thing as mistakes, only lessons !!! Plus, when making decisions, no one really knows if it’s going to turn out ok. You make decisions that are best at the time!!!
The privilege to CHOOSE has meant everything for me. Working to get a full scholarship to college let me graduate without debt and take on jobs I wanted not based on salary. My savings allowed me to leave jobs I hated or where I wouldn't be able to move up. That money also let me move cities, freelance, and go to therapy. I made sacrifices in order to get there--time having fun in high school/college, living at home for a while, generally being frugal. At 26 I feel so capable and I'm preparing to go back to graduate school next year, knowing what I'm good at and where I want to go. Don't let anyone throw you off your financial and life goals. The heartbreak, disappointment, or feelings of being left out will pass, but you are the one who has to live your life.
I have found that for me the learning process never stops, I will be 73 soon and every day I seem to find something, usually through reflection, that will make my tomorrow better.
I started doing a phd abroad at age 32, but because of things that happened in my life I am currently completely unmotivated and burned out on this academic path. I'm planning to take the leap this year to the life I want, so wish me luck! 🥰
It's part of doing a PhD, at any age. So, picture yourself ten years from now and ask your future self what you would regret most. All the best. Technically, I started three PhDs, but really I did two, half, one in the US and one in the UK. I was 33 when I started the first one of those two. We ran out of funding and that was immensely stressful for me as I could not work off-campus on my visa. (The first one that I started technically was cancelled when they discovered that my very young-looking face really was in its thirties. So I emigrated to the US.) What's the life you want? Me, I have totally unsettled my life because I was really stuck only to get even more stuck, it looks like, and now I am trying to figure out what I did wrong if anyone and what now. I'm 63 and I feel more lost than I have ever felt before. Well, okay, admittedly, there is a very specific reason for my current confusion but... I think I want to do a 180 and sort of reverse my decision but on a different path or something. It's baffling, really baffling. This is so not me, so I guess I am running into what Jean pointed out in another video, that we are uncomfortable with being uncomfortable and uncertain. But I WAS stuck and I had to do something. I paid a huge price - it hurt - but maybe I really had to. Maybe I did.
Thank you for making this video! I'm 29 now and have felt so lost throughout my 20s. I often feel like by age 30, I should have so much more accomplished than I do. I appreciate the reminder that we are all on our own individual path in life
Now in my mid-20s, have been feeling very lost this past year. Some of my friends are still single, while some are married. Feels like we have to get everything together and build a good career, marriage, family within these few years, hence bringing a lot of stress. Thank you for the great reminder there is a long way ahead of us, and we don't have to be so fixated on certain ideas and deadlines ❤ This message really helped to ease me up a bit, and learn how to relax, let go and see how life unfolds 😊
Perhaps the biggest benefit of choosing a simpler life is better physical and mental health. It is amazing how unhappy those strivers are despite their successes. Plus, you look amazing for 40. I have seen plenty of friends look old beyond their age due to the stress of work and keeping up with expectations. Do not discount this benefit. It is something that money cannot buy.
thank you - its pretty arbitrary to set all those goals by certain ages - chuck that thinking out of the window and do what's truly beneficial for your life, with the right people consciously chosen xoxo
I love your lifestyle, your retirement setup and even the minimalism. As an Asian myself, where you either be a doctor, a nurse, a lawyer or a failure, life has been stressful. Working as a nurse for 10 yrs now and is currently looking into quiting the career my parents chose for me. I want to be an artist since age 3. Drawing and painting is my reason for existence. I am really tired of people pleasing all my life and chasing timelines which the people around me set for me. Thank you for this channel. It feels like I am not alone. Thank you.
Thank you so much for this video, being around 40 myself, it was nice to hear someone else acknowledge what I have also learned throughout my 20, 30, 35... Also your voice is one of a kind and makes listing to your videos extremely pleasant. Wishing you much more success. 🙌
Life begins at 40 :) I too in early 40s and had few mini retirements in my 30s. Now I am quitting my full time job end of the year and will spend 8 months in Australia and 4 months during winter in Sri Lanka in my farm. I too investing mainly in Australian property and US stocks @JeanVoronkova
So much practical wisdom, I pray to God that your channel get one million subscribers and that more people hear, understand and then apply this wisdom.
40????!!! Need a skincare routine ASAP 😭As a risk-averse person, always saving money and building options, many people don't understand why I do these things at such an early age -- but in hard times (I got laid off for example), I am so glad I did these things. Options truly are the biggest privilege in life. Thanks for your beautiful wisdom 🤍
I almost never comment on videos - but Jean, this is really useful information and learnings to share with everyone. Thank you for taking the time to share with us - incredibly honest, true, and wise. Really appreciate all of your videos, but this one really struck a chord. Thank you.
hi John, thank you for such a kind note I really appreciate it. My goal this year is to be able to share more earnestly from the heart with all of you. Less barriers.
Your videos are soothing and therapeutic. You give such a healing energy, voice, and perspective. I feel so inspired to live my best life from watching your videos.
That is a very good analogy of life. I think choices are our so sometime wrong or right is not as important as weather we learn anything from the decision we made. Really nice to see you are able to walk out of the rat race and life such a fulfilling life. thanks for sharing.
Thank u Roger. I agree. Right and wrong anything is just a matter of time frame and perspective. My past heartbreaks and errors back in the time looked disastrous but zooming out to a larger time frame I’m grateful for all that happened ultimately
@@JeanVoronkova I am planning to retire in hopefully 3 years time. Bali is a place in my list but I think there are other options too. just listing out my options and still plan to have a much active life in my retirement years. Will follow your video and great to see much of your recommendations. Thank you.
2nd video so far. I'm just hearing this as a background sound yet making me realize things that I really need to listen to my guts and find to live in my terms of how I want life to be. looking forward to watch your other videos.
thank you! I'm so glad the videos are helpful to you. I think it takes time to affect changes in mentality and to embrace the courage to listen to your instincts. Hang in there!
I could 100 percent relating to what you say. I’m turning 45 this year. Feeling so good listening to all your programs. Happy Lunar new year. Wish you all success, wealth and good health. ❤️❤️❤️
How can one be so charming and feminine and so grounded and wise at the same time...? I wish you all the best to both of you and keep it up! Your videos are really inspiring! 🍀
thank you to be honest directly.. about relationships and jobs.. i totally felt it resonating directly.. thank you soooo much sweet you ! your journey is inspiring to dare.. and learn from what we did, lived before, whatever . thank you
thank you for this heartfelt note luna, i'm so glad the video resonated and hope it brought you some comfort in what you're going through right now. To take such a huge step of change at age 37 is no small thing - you've been very brave, and i'm sure it was because you understood yourself and your feelings very clearly, so i'm really happy about that cos i think that's the first step towards living well - to be able to see yourself truly and objectively. Keep that positive energy about you always and remember what other people think really doesn't matter in the bigger picture - create a happy life for yourself. All the best!
@@JeanVoronkova thank you so much for your encouraging words. i feel very grateful and touched by your message. to take time to read and respond is very gentle of you. you are a very lovely person :) thanks to life, since i decided that i deserve to live happy, to let go some situations, magically i open up to better vibrations and things flow better, and by itself nearly as you express it in fact :) i keep on this confidence mindset because deep i was that way and even younger, in my 20s, i lived abroad and changed carrer, and country many times and loved it ;) then i came back to native land, settled a bit.. i felt it was meant to be that way.. (still young..:) and i noticed from here, i develop the mental limitations etc that i did not have before..i came back serene confident with life as i was flowing with it ;) then settling in a way that was not really me create me that not ease vibes. but one day, i face me, and since i process a self liberation in fact :) and so channel and testimony like yours put us in the good vibe :) and confort us to follow what we feel :) (even if not clear how to do it at first, things unfold connect as you express), even if for "norms" it is crazy, no matter. by experience, we know it works that way. as we lived it already. so in fact, i have to trust my experience and feelings :) and detach of ideas. and since i start to feel serenity confidence lightness back :) motivated to take back my life ;) with no stress rush but for sure focus on that vibe :) since i decided it, things connect on the way :) thank you for your encouragement, and what you offer to others, sincerely, love :)
Kissed a toxic frog 😂 True that!! I’m in my 20s and I totally get what you’re saying. I thought I would have been further along by now, but I’m trying not to freak out as if I must accomplish certain life goals by a certain time. That’s unnecessary stress.
ahaa! so happy u caught that quip haha - don't freak out. All those supposed timelines are arbitrary. Like, if i had caved to pressure and got married to the guy that hurt me so much over 4 years, I would totally be in regret right now I believe, because he was a very selfish person objectively (now that i can see, with distance and hindsight). But I left him and chose to be single unless the right one came along - n at 35 i married my truly wonderful hubs - it pays to hold out and follow your truth.
You are so beautiful, inside and out! Thank you for this essential reminder. I'm leaving these words here so that you know you are appreciated, and also because I want to be called back here whenever someone likes or comments. Sending much love your way!❤🙏
Thank you so much, Jean for this video! I have been in my first job for about 4 years now. I am feeling a little burnt out at the moment but finding joy through whatever I do after work in my own creative space - on Instagram and RUclips too. I am still pondering about my next step in my career, and appreciate all the advice here.
Thanks Mel for this note 🌻 I salute u for having the commitment to keep finding yourself after work hours - my former job was too draining all I cd do was just survive. Good luck for that next step! N don’t forget that whatever it turns out to be it’ll never be a wrong step per se 🦋
I just stumbled on this video but it's truly one of the best videos I've seen on RUclips, so wise and insightful, I too now in my late 30s can fully appreciate the advice you gave. Hopefully people in their 20s can appreciate and take on some of your advice so they can live a more fulfilling life earlier in their journey.
That’s such a beautiful way of looking at life and learning lessons in hindsight. We are all on our own journey and the reality is life is not how it appears through social media. We have ups and downs, we love and fear, we fail and we accomplish. And eventually we learn what is right for us as an individual. Thank you for sharing your story❤
Hi Jean: Absolutely amazing. Thank you for sharing your 20s to 39+. Ops not 40. Your insight and reflection are so meaningful. Your video reminds me of my rat race in SG, totally oblivious of my surrounding. It was like being put onto a track and soon had to run. I am glad I ended up in California enjoying the breeze, blue sky and snow!
So very positive!!! With a smile that match!!! Can take you anywhere you want to go. Good work really like your attitude!!! Its infectious. Thank you!!!
I can completely relate to every word you have said. I am years behind but as you have said, everyone has their own journey. So happy you have found Vilaty. Having the right partner next to you can make all the difference. Wishing you all the best on your journey and looking forward to more supporting, encouraging and enlightening videos 😘
Hi B R, thanks for this note and for sharing about your own story 🤗 it might feel like you’re “behind” right now, but things may really pan out differently as time unfolds - that was my own trajectory as well in the early 30s due to my choices😅 - be happy and present in the now and walk on 🤗 all the best 🦋
@@JeanVoronkova Thank you! I am working on becoming braver and taking more chances. It might still take some time but every small step in the right direction is a good one.
@@br8979 you're on the right track i think. Check this out i hope this helps and makes sense! moretothat.com/take-the-leap/ It's the whole "inaction is a slow death" line of thought.
So very nice to see you back uploading full length videos rather than shorts. We learn a lot from you. If you feel comfortable showing us your new home, we would love to see it. We are also curious to know why you moved house. Your last house looked lovely and inviting.
hey Abbie! thanks for always dropping by our space each week, "rain or shine"! You'll get to see more of our new digs in this saturday's video! we're really loving the new place, although we also have such fond memories of our "honeymoon house" as we call it - our 1 bedroom that we've been living in for over 17 months. We moved cos we want our parents to come to stay more often and it's become so expensive and difficult to find good hotels nearby - when they are here, we really want to max our time together too - so we started planning for this new house 6 months ago and now it's finally ready and we moved in :)
Dear Jean, thanks a lot for your very wonderful explanation of your list of "Things". It is always a pleasure to listen to you, and that you two are such a happy and loving couple makes me so hopeful for mankind. Always keep your positive way, as it makes this world a little bit better and can infect also other people who have maybe lost their way to get back on the positive side of life. Best regards from Germany to you two and I wish bags of happiness for you two for the future.... Peace & Love, Sascha 🙏☺☮❤
thank you Sascha, i really loved this note you left. I aspire to make a small difference out there with our videos of positivity, and your note has brought me warmth and happiness to my heart xoxo - big hugs to you so far away in Germany! wishing you love, peace & contentment :) 🌹
listening to your voice and videos makes me feel so zen!!! :) I am almost 50 and you definitely touched on it, but taking risks in your 20s is crucial I think. If it all comes to nothing (as it did with me), you can always start that "norma"l career again, you might just be a bit behind thats all, or ditch the normalcy and do what you guys did.
i totally agree Steven, thanks for chipping in! you put it across more clearly than i did about the risk aspect. A u-turn is usually always pretty possible, and "normal life" tends to alwys be there waiting. Thank you!
thank you, haha I hope that's truly the case - we're in such a good place now as a couple it's hard to move on from the present i just wanna freeze frame our NOW!
You're right about the list. Society especially in the U.S. teaches us that in order for someone to be worthy he/she must come with an avalanche of qualities. Its hard to deviate from this mindset ; but I say no. Love me first and we can start from there. Thanks for the video with love from Atlanta, GA.
i hear you. We're so inundated by society since young that we must look for that list of criteria in our mate... but if the love is lacking, its never gonna work out how we want it eh
Life is a journey, as I always say. It's not about the destination, but the journey itself. Everyone you meet is a teacher in your life. You will learn both from positive teachings as well as the negative teachings (things not to do) from people you meet. Both serve a vital purpose in your life. It's all about learning and growth. A person who do not encounter any adversity in life will be inexperienced dealing with one and usually have a low resilience level, they usually give up very quickly when things become difficult. I think you get my point. Perspective is what you gain over time, so I congratulate you reaching 40, as you become wiser and more experienced. The most important perspective I think is that an event is only negative if you label it as negative. If you treat everything as learning, you will transform inside out and life will become better and better.
I can listen to your voice all day ..like Alan watts. Just soothing. Have you and your husband ever thought doing some of your best content to chill step music? Awesome God bless you guys
haha I have to confess I can't quite imagine what that will be like! I'm not strong on musical imagination but i've always wanted to experiment though. But anyway thank you for your time to watch 🙏🤓
thanks! can't say my parents wished the same when i was vearing off course in the early years it was more stressful for them than anything lol. Your kid will find her own path eventually i'm sure
Jean I love it when you make videos like this one, because we all have to look back on our lives in our 20's and see threw the lens what we could have done better. Also even in our 30's or 40's I'm so happy that you uploaded a new video Jean sweetheart. I'm always interested to what you have to say about anything in life, because you have a lot of knowledge. Much respect to you Jean sweetheart.
hey Dom! Happy Saturday to you! Thank you for always being here each week that I share a video - you've really been the best. I wouldn't say I have a lot of knowledge haha just i tried a lot of stuff and some of it was painful and if it could help others avert some bad times... why not? I'm sure you have your fair share of stories too :)
Thank you Jean!!! I resonate with you so so much. I’m in my 30s now. I spent my 20s in a lot of pain and was very lost. I am still trying to pick myself up but at a better place now.. I’m a Singaporean as well…it’s important to be authentic
hello fellow countrywoman lol, sorry to hear about your 20s.... mine i guess i would describe it exactly like that as well. take heart - time makes all the difference, and all that pain and fog is not for nothing - u'll see as your 30s pan out it's all just life lessons really to make us understand who we truly are (i'm damn particular haha). U go girl.
Wow, beautiful video, beautiful voice, Happy Chinese New Year, Happy Bday soon, and wish you have a wonderful life with your Hubby and family.. Thanks for the video Jean, the lists you mentioned are truely true, and sounds very original.. i wish everyone living here on earth has this philosophy embedded on them by their parents since they were young, the world would be so much better.. 😅😅
Thank you for this kind note Jason and happy CNY to you too! ah well we can all wish a lot of things, but all we can do is just try our best each given day and appreciate what we have i guess lol. Wish u good week!
Happy birthday Jean and thank you for this beautiful message to the world. There is something very comforting and inspirational in the way you convey your message. Your words connect to me very deeply and I applaud your choice to share your journey and share your advice. Perhaps it will bring a smile to your face to know this was more of a confirmation for me of what I already know to be true in myself. Be blessed kind soul, as your aura is amazing! Keep shining your light! 🙏🏽♥️
Thank you so much for this video! As I approach my 29th birthday I am starting to have all of these doubts and concerns with the deadlines… even starting doubt the carrier path I chose since it seems to be delaying my life from happening
Hi Jean greetings from Indonesia, this is the first video I watched this morning. I have been thinking about this as well when I just turned 30, I felt kinda regret why that I didn't know things earlier?? But then I realised I wouldn't be here without all that happened in my my 20s. Goods and bads. You're right, life gets better with age. Thanks for the video. Lots of love!
hey Nayadini thanks for this note :) - it's all just part of our life canvas - the good and the bad stuff :) and you can't really tell if what you perceive now as "bad" may turn out to be very good in the end ... like that horrible painful break up after 4 years - that hurt me for so long - but a decade later i'm so thankful i did not marry that man and now i truly have a wonderful hubby! anyway good luck!
This is great advice! You are so soothing. I feel I made the right choices. But sometimes in pandemic things are hard as a healthcare worker. Many people want to be quit. But I wouldn’t know what I would do now!
Nice vid Jean, with maybe the overriding theme to stop, breath and check in every now and then to see how you’re travelling. Happy, not happy…..Cheers. 🙏
nice interpretation Mark, so true. I hate blindly going down the wrong alleys.... although i guess there's never strictly speaking a totally valueless journey haha
I am not articulate and sometimes fumble around the words that I am trying to say to ppl.But u def make me to make sense the thoughts that I always have in my mind.Thank u for sharing ur profound thought.
I love the particular analogies you bring out such as echo chambers or drawing out the negative space in your life ❤ We can see that you have true wisdom through this, thank you for sharing it😌
We all make mistakes in our twenties. You hopefully learn from them, grow and move on. One important difference for me is how I treat friendships. Yes, they are nice to have but not as essential in your 40s. I still enjoy socializing in small doses but oh how I love my solitude. Some people cannot stand being alone. That's very sad.
oooh i am totally with you.... i'm so happy being a hermit crab these days! I worry that I'm not valuing the friends around me enough sometimes but at others, like you say, solitude rocks! happy Saturday Daniel 😍
hi Ed, thanks! This year we're focusing more on family and a new personal project (plus a new puppy!) so we're doing videos every 2 weeks now, but I really appreciate you thinking of us. Glad you enjoed this one. and thanks for my bday wishes! :) Happy Sunday u guys!
I really enjoyed watching your video. As someone approaching their mid 20s, I can relate to numerous of the worries you mentioned including finding the one or settling for someone. I hope to come back to this video 10 years later and say that it changed my life. :)
Im 42 and just starting to gain some traction on my finances after several years of budgeting and paying off credit card debt. Still have a lot of student loans, but plan to start saving for the future at the same time of solving the student loan debt. Thanks, glad to find someone close to my age to tune into. 🙏
it's brave of you to tackle things head on and i know it's tough - student loans on one hand and trying to save for the future on the other - hang in there!
Your videos and voice help soothe my soul Jean.❤ Thank you for sharing so much Wisdom, it's very helpful. 🙏 You're an inspiration and Your Way of Living and Be-ing is showing me that it's possible to have a simple, beautiful and Present Life away from the regular 9-5 🙏😊 I'm excited for my divine partner to show up like yours has for you.❣️😊 I have made some big choices lately and I'm excited to see how things unfold. 🌸😊🙏 Really needed to hear that it's ok to make the wrong decision as well. I definitely know that....but the way you articulated it helped heal part of my perfectionist self. Blessings Friend ❣️
I love this video! I clicked because you don't look anywhere near 40. You look early 20s and I think that's in part to excellent genes, and you are quite lovely! I've noticed many Asians and Black groups tend to age very slowly especially when they take care of themselves. You are very blessed and wise! If you have time, please make a video for those just starting out in life at 40.
Hey Jean, appreciate you taking the time and patience to talk about such matters that can really connect. You’re really patient and clear in your points.. your lawyer bkg is really helpful in this aspect, PTL 🙌🏼
thanks Noah, I just felt like at this point, I've been so blessed. Looking back at all the tears and struggles of the last 20 years, all the ups & downs, I'm so lucky to be in the place I am right now, and i thought sharing some of these points is a way to give back and to hope the younger ones going through their own times will benefit! or find comfort anyway...
@@JeanVoronkova it is really comforting, after a 5years of marriage, then divorce, then pursuing dream study: master's, working independently, I always felt why I had to go through all this.
thanks for this kind note Glenita :) I'm glad the video resonated. Let's make our 40s journey the happiest and most contented yet :)
Life begins at 40 :) I too in early 40s and had few mini retirements in my 30s. Now I am quitting my full time job end of the year and will spend 8 months in Australia and 4 months during winter in Sri Lanka in my farm. I too investing mainly in Australian property and US stocks
@JeanVoronkova
So much practical wisdom, I pray to God that your channel get one million subscribers and that more people hear, understand and then apply this wisdom.
wow, thank you, that's very kind
I'm in my early 30s and still felt this message came right on time. Thank you and Happy Birthday 🎂
thank you Amelia, I really appreciate your kind note and so happy that the video brought you a lil smtg to mule over :)
If you feel lost, you are simply drawing your "negative space". Such a powerful analogy.
What a beautiful giving person. Best to you both, Dave from America

I’m turning 40 this year as well. Thank you for this great content. ❤🙌
My past heartbreaks and errors back in the time looked disastrous but zooming out to a larger time frame I’m grateful for all that happened ultimately

thank you for this heartfelt note luna, i'm so glad the video resonated and hope it brought you some comfort in what you're going through right now. To take such a huge step of change at age 37 is no small thing - you've been very brave, and i'm sure it was because you understood yourself and your feelings very clearly, so i'm really happy about that cos i think that's the first step towards living well - to be able to see yourself truly and objectively.
Kissed a toxic frog 😂
True that!!
@Jean Voronkova That’s wonderful encouragement!

Loved how genuine and heartfelt your video was

Dear Jean,
thanks a lot for your very wonderful explanation of your list of "Things". It is always a pleasure to listen to you, and that you two are such a happy and loving couple makes me so hopeful for mankind. Always keep your positive way, as it makes this world a little bit better and can infect also other people who have maybe lost their way to get back on the positive side of life.
Best regards from Germany to you two and I wish bags of happiness for you two for the future....

listening to your voice and videos makes me feel so zen!!!
Thank you!
I love your videos! Great job!
You are definitely going to enjoy the next 20 years moving forward. Happy 40th! I think you’re doing life right!❤👍
thank you, haha I hope that's truly the case - we're in such a good place now as a couple it's hard to move on from the present i just wanna freeze frame our NOW!
I am drawing the negative spaces of my life and it's part of the picture. WOW!!!!!!! This made me emotional

We all make mistakes in our twenties. You hopefully learn from them, grow and move on. One important difference for me is how I treat friendships.
