Patch 1.04 in Elden Ring came with a lot of magic tweaks, so here's some quick advice for every sorcery. Even the bad ones. There are plenty of non-meta sorceries that are really strong in lots of situations, and ones that just don't get attention...
Except Tibia's Summons. No patch can fix that trash.

Also, I didn't do Lucidity. Lucidity alleviates sleep and madness... So, uh... use it if you're accumulating one of those two things.
Yo what's the armor you're using at 4:58. been looking for it over the wiki and have no idea what it is. great vid btw, gave me uses for spells that i for the love of me couldnt find a way to utilize in pve even if a bunch of it is more on the flashier side than practical side, just makes it more fun tbh
vid on fashion soul? i want to know mostly all your armor sets showcased in the video
@@fuzzyblueberry2917 ??
Glintblade is actually a super sleeper amazing spell in PvE, because you can do some real tricksy shit with it. NPCs and some enemies will just dodge the instant you cast, and be completely vulnerable when the blade fires off. It's cast up high, so you can do some scummy over the wall nonsense against some nasty enemies like the stairway corridor of doom where you have ballistas on both sides in Stormveil. You can stack up a buttload of them before the first fires off and watch as your confused foe flails about trying not to die... Probably a few more uses that aren't coming to mind this instant, I keep it around on my magic using builds just because it's a simple low-cost spell that can do so much with something so unassuming.
Why does 2qve if darkness need to be nerfed
Another important note about Night Comet; it’s one of those spells that AI enemies aren’t programmed to try and dodge.
For the most part, basilisks still will sometimes
unless they're programmed to randomly jump regardless, but still, the best
night comet is my go-to for those NPC invaders. And with the staff of loss in off hand, I think it outdamages comet and uses less fp.
@@alcoremortis And, you can use Godfrey's Icon to up the charge damage. So you can snipe enemies with it.
All the NPCs are getting bonked by Haima's hammer or knocked down to death by Carian piercer.
@11:30 deflects Elden Beasts attacks. Lorewise, Thops was a genius
Magic Glintblade was quite useful for me even past mid game (spell comes with prisoner, dex int build). You can build up several casts on unsuspecting enemies and jump attack when they turn around for some quick poise break. Worked nicely on spell-dodging and shielded enemies, cast it and kite them around
It was the best spell of my first playthrough.
It also works great if you’re running away on a horse, you don’t even need to turn around
Ngl starting as prisoner was great, I loved the spell because you could lure out single enemies but Yuh
I used it a lot because npcs dodge cast but not the hit
It also carried me through godskin duo when I was doing a pure mage build so I could cast it when I was safe but then run alway and when they chased after me they’d be exposed in time for the activation
9:42 Not to mention this spell is useful against AI invaders. While they can avoid most sorceries with ease, they have problem with avoiding rocks.
it carry me throughout the game
The best imo is night comet and night shard because those are faster and more reliable and AI enemies simply do not register that they were cast, but on the other hand rock sling and meteorite staff can carry you at least through the first 2/3 of the game
@@blazaybla22 rock sling still carry me in Elden Beast fight
@@s0meRand0m129 OP was talking about AI invaders though
Gravity well is one of the most useful low int spells in the entire game. It instantly pulls flying enemies out of the air into a grounded finisher animation and also screws over any archer that's close to a ledge.
Late but it's super useful to get past the big trumpet Snowmans in the Halightree, except the massive one. I think only falling stars work
Apparently something most don’t know is that NPCs can’t read night sorceries, so enemies won’t jump out of the way as soon as you cast. Definitely worth the damage loss when your attacks actually hit your target
HEAVILY undervaluing magic glintblade
the delay is really good against enemies who immediately dodge when you cast something and is also good for enemies who just don't fuck off because you can cast it and then run away, bait the enemy to run in front of it and it will never miss when it's behind them, + it's incredibly spammy with low cast time and low fp cost
I never unequip this
Frrr from like the start of the game to late-mid game around the end of lyndell before snowy area on my first play through I used like 3 or 4 then got a bit further away to test their hp
Just got this spell and love it.
@@markb5775 btw I recommend learning how to use rock sling like master it I’ve been able to go through so many bosses with only a summon to draw agro, rock sling and glintblade
It's nice that you can either just hold it, or spam a bunch in a row.
Thanks to the delay you also get like 4 out before the first aggros the enemy and probably 6 before they make it to you
Thops's Barrier should be a reflect instead of a deflect! It's so hard to use so making your enemies spells fly back at them would give the spell a lot of usefulness. And because Carian Retaliation and Eternal Darkness are a thing it absolutely gets outclassed in it's current state. 🔮
You can actually hold down Thop's barrier to keep get a guaranteed magic shield without fp unless it blocks a spell. It's still not that useful since it limits mobility but it's a lot better than what you make it out to be.
it can also be cheapily chain casted if your under constant fire, like from the elden beast
No, holding down just makes it auto cast rapidly, it still doesn't guarantee a block.
11:30 Thop's barrier is the only spell that can deflect Elden Beast's magic attacks. It can also be held like the meteor spell (then it's cast time is speed up)
Tip: Unseen Form paired with the armor you specificly get in that town makes the process a lot easier
Man these combos are genius. Makes it more varied than simply spaming moonveil.
9:45 Rock Sling also has the thing where it tracks and fires way after the input read to dodge, so it's great against non-PVP enemies who dodge fast spells.
8:50 pair with erdtree greatshield, you can parry your own spells and oracle bubbles is one of the easiest to do so with
A bit late to the party, but I have one actually very useful tip for Rock Sling... actually two, but whatever.
Put your staff in your off-hand when casting Rock Sling even if you're a pure caster build. Doing so makes the spell's range nearly infinite so long as you can lock onto something. One of the three rocks will drop off and fall to the ground, but the other two will home in on it's intended target or just fly off into the great beyond somewhere if they somehow miss (which is unlikely). This is highly useful in any boss fight with a massive arena, because you will likely be able to lock onto them from anywhere in the room. This is doubly effective against either battle with Astel, because on top of having the range of the entire freakin' room, Astel's face is a weak point that takes a lot of damage from physical damage (and oh hey! Rock Sling does physical damage!). I'm not sure if gravity spells are also more effective against Astel and the Fallingstar Beast enemies, but either way, it's very effective taking Astel on from across the room as you avoid all but 3 or 4 of his attacks (and all of them are somewhat easy to dodge).
So ya... rocks become a double-barrel sniper rifle. =p
One more thing about Magic Glintblade: You can fire two at the same time when starting a fight against an NPC that's not aware of you. Fully charge one, then as soon as your character lowers their staff, tap the cast button again. The two should fire out at almost identical times, and both hit the target. You can also use that delay to either charge in with a melee, or cast another offensive spell for a pretty significant amount of burst considering the part of the game you'll be using the spell for.
A tip for anyone using rock sling. If you cast it on your off hand it has exceptionally longer range than on your main hand for some reason

I feel like night sorceries kindof got skipped over so ill just mention that enemies that actively dodge range attacks like bows and spells cannot "see" night spells. They will not attempt to dodge them and will walk right into them every time. Perfect for cheesing malenia
What are the night sorceries?
Additional tips:
Rock sling: arrow's reach talisman works on this. Also, input reading enemies that dodge spells will dodge when you start the cast, rather than when you actually launch the rocks.
Carian slicer: I think this has the highest damage per fp of any spell.
Barrage spells: surprisingly easy to posture break enemies with these if you can land a full barrage.
Ambush shard: very long range. Bypasses shields. Isn't blocked by obstacles between you and the enemy.
Night shard/comet: enemies won't dodge these unless you fire multiple in a row.
Ranni's Dark moon also has the 6Eternal darkness effect(making projectile spells spin around it, even Renalla's full moon)
Ok now I need to see moon circling moon
@@shinotenshi45 no, the other one just dissapears. Iirc, whoever's moon was casted first will remain
It's actually very good against radagon as the moon eats up all his holy spears and keeps flying at him
That intro meming all the Elden Ring RUclipsrs was worthy of a chefs kiss my friend!
Thop's Barrier is actually really good, but you have to channel it to maintain the Barrier. It's consistently deflecting all magic projectiles.
8:49 Point blank shotgun instantly stuns basically everything it doesn't outright kill.
I use the albinuric staff with it and it deals pretty good damage, it's also on par with the great oracle bubble spell for damage.
Okay, I didn’t even know spell combos were a thing before this video! Nice work as always, Rusty.
There’s probably other people asking this, but an incantation version of this video would be cool too.
Magic glintblade has so much more use. You can use it when behind a pack of enemies, charge a few up at different enemies and just assume they will die. It's also great for npcs that input read to dodge ranged abilities, they dodge the cast but take the blade to the face. Additionally quite good in pvp to zone people, control a corridor, or just unload on someone not suspecteting 6 of these plus stars of ruin/collapsing stars
So magic builds are actually good in this version of Dark Souls? Sweet
Yeah spells weren’t good before or anything
@@kabershshkabersh4272 they really weren't, not in PvP at least. And they were still super boring in PvE.
@@a_fuckin_spacemarine7514 if we’re talking about pvp, yeah. But even if they were boring in pve, they were still busted as shit lol
I disagree. I played thousands of hours of pure sorcerer in previous titles and I had an absolute blast in both pvp and pve. Its a user issue usually.
@@alqx2210 nah bro....... DS3 magic was garbage across the board. DS1 magic was good for PvE (dark magic was just busted, not talking bout that) but it was boring. DS2 actually had good magic, but was hindered by being DS2. Never used arcane stuff in Bloodborne.
The moon sorceries can absorb spells and incants on its way to the target.
For those who don't know if you hold down Gelmir's Fury like Comet Azure the flames can keep spewing from the ground till your FP has been used up. Sadly this spell works mostly for smaller and more stunnable enemies but it can have its uses
The gravity well’s primary draw is basically the same as that of the force of nature from TF2 if your description of it is anything to go by.
Rock Sling deals physical damage. That means Rennala does not have near immunity to it. Also the meteorite staff that you find really close to it boost gravity sorcery and is a fantastic early game staff because it starts out with S grade scaling but can’t be upgraded.
Cannon of Haima also hits enemies through walls and knocks down targets off cliffs.
12:20 That's exactly what the Black-Knife Assassin's set is for, completely nullifies your steps sound and it's found in the same location.
This is perfect, I just started NG and I wanted to go full sorcery
Bet you're already swinging that moonveil
Have a good time with that.
@@geert574 I can argue that for NG+ Darkmoon makes more sense than Moonveil now.
@@MammalianCreature thanks! Rushing renalla rn to get a Respec haha
I hope you figured out that magic glintblade is one of the best spells in the game, not the worst.
I’ll just say this about Cannon of Haima but it applies to a lot of other spells - the Arrow’s Reach talisman extends the range *significantly* - I know it also works for Magma Shot and Ambush shard, but there are a lot more that need testing. It seems that as long as it’s not a straightforward projectile (most often if it has a parabolic arc but also ambush shard so not sure the exact criteria but definitely not glintstone pebble, night shard, etc)
I know I’m late here, but for anybody that might be wondering, I’ve done a lot of testing and Anything that boosts magic/fire/lightning etc.. can also boost Ash of War Abilities I have a couple normal ash of Wars but I set them to magic dmg and it gets a 250 dmg boost when active from Mix Physic or other boosters!! Just letting you guys know!
Magic Glintblade is severely underrated because it hits enemies who will constantly dodge your casts (although not all the time)
For Night Maiden's Mist: The charged version of this spell has a larger aoe, but it might also hurt your pc's framerate, so be aware.
12:20 easy fix for this problem: either the cotton item or the black knife armor set (which is conveniently found under the bridge in this area) also check replies for more solutions
1 more idea assassin's step incantation. Not sure if both work together but maybe
And crepus's vial too
Bruh maybe I need to get myself a Maidenless hat 😐
😐 same
will there be a all incantation video?
i love the glintblade phalanx, one of the most satisfying things to do perfectly time its blades firing simultaneously with the glintstone pebble/dart thrust move or with loretta’s bow
12:26 Unseen Form would be a good combo if You use the Black Knife Armor (the chest part make Your steps unable to make sound... Básically, You became the Black Knife assasin that is in the Ruins before Malenia's tree)
For whatever reason I never thought to try comboing spells together outside of the big moon and terra magicka. Damnit, I've got to add another sorcery playthrough to my ever growing list of playthroughs.
Hey about spell casting speed... You can reach max casting speed with 0 dex, just equip radagon's icon and azur glintstone staff as the staff you won't use... Work also with faith build
useful, but be aware of 20% increase FP cost of sorceries
Fantastic video overall man, I really appreciate all of the effort and the amount of time that has been put into putting this masterpiece together for our viewing pleasure.
That being said - I wish you had a longer segment on Magic Glintblade. The delay of it makes it absolutely fantastic because enemies will dodge on cast, thus the delay allows it to hit several times in succession.
12:25 Pairs really well with the black knives set found near the clip, since that makes you silent
How can you not mention Rock Sling is the longest range spell in the game, only when left hand cast, 2 of thr 3 rocks have infinite range if you can get a lock, you can hit it. It's insanely useful and borderline breaks the game.
Rock Sling won me many fights 👍👍
just FYI, this is not 100% accurate anymore.
@@joeruder oh really? Haven't been on ER in a while
Besides Staff of Loss meme, Night Shard and Comet also don't trigger input read from enemies, so they don't dodge them even if they see you casting them.
12:20 if you try to cheese that area with that spell, also equip the chest piece from the black knives set since it silences your movement, its in that area just under the bridge
Here's another tip: Just like how you can chain cast incantations (Best Example being like: Beastial sling into Theodorix or Honed bolt).
You can use swift glintstone shard to chain cast into other spells like comet and similar.
Theres precious few chain sorceries sadly
A thing you didn't mention about glintstone arc is that it can rollcatch reasonably effectively if you use it at its max range
Theres an talisman you can get via the volano manor quest line that eliminates all noise you make which can pair nicely with unseen body
These types of videos are really helpful as well as entertaining. That is pretty rare for youtube these days.
just a btw, gelmirs fury is channelable, as in you can keep holding it to keep damaging, similar to the lazer. casting it once is just wasting a cast.
From what I can remember, Oracle Bubbles can be used to break the stance of an enemy fairly well, but you need to use it at very close range.
Your style of commentary is hilarious I love it lmao
Gelmir's fury can be held down to continuously expel lava up to a certain amount of fp. I haven´t used it in pve but in pvp if someone gets near me and i cast it does a lot of damge and staggers the oponent. And thops barrier can be also held to continue casting it.
the thorn spells are actually pretty good when used with staff of the guilty in one hand and albinauric staff to cast because it will make the bleed buildup scale
Note that carian slicer into carian thrust or whatever it’s called is a very powerful true combo
Meteorite of Astel is so good against dragons and bosses, use the infinite FP Crystal Tear with Azur Staff and just hold down the cast button and watch them melt if they fail to interrupt you fast enough, it alone let me cheese the crap outta most of the late and endgame bosses that weren't on a horse or 1st health bar Malenia.
yea lol basically erased elden beast & placidusax for me 😂
Even before patches I thoroughly enjoyed magic builds in this game. The range increase on several spells helped alot, still waiting on the return of DS2 levels of spell range though.
Your videos are great, would love to see an incantation version of this :)
They really do need to fix (waves of darkness) thanks for mentioning that. Fix the wide r2 sweep, or just remove it so we don't accidentally waste it and leave ourselves open.
I love how he puts over the powerful spells and then turns around and laughs while describing the ones that suck.
Once helped a person with Renala only to have the first phase glitch and not spawn one of the glowing minions. Thankfully I had that one mist spell and was able to bring her into the 2nd phase anyway
Tip for Rock Blaster: Use either Millicent's Prosthesis, or one of the winged sword talismans, as well as the Godfrey Icon. You can charge it as long as you want, and the charge phase does damage to anything standing in melee range in front of you. You can walk (albiet slowly) and change direction, so it's actually really good against slow or persistent enemies.
About Night Comet (and shard) you should say more. For example that AI is ignoring it and doesn't dodge. And it's highest dps spell, as long as you have Staff of Loss in offhand
You can use just this and nothing else, and game becomes easy mode
Exactly ... more damage by dual wielding and even more damage by not being doged.
Ever tried to kill a fly with some standard comet? Then you know what FP and stamina waste it is, being constantly dodged.
@@michaelsawczyn1704 I was using double Loss until I leveled Faith to 80, and then I started using Prince of Death with Loss only in offhand.
For Night Comet damage was almost the same, but Prince of Death was better for all other spells (even better than Lusat)
Numbers on my testing with full build (4 talismans, +4/8/12/15%; Loss in offhand, +30%, Golden Vow, +15%; Terra Magica, +35%; Flask, +20%):
Prince in main hand:
Normal cast: 1767
Charged: 2426
Charged + Golden Vow + Terra Magica + Flask: 4520
Loss in main hand:
Normal cast: 1801
Charged: 2494
Charged + Golden Vow + Terra Magica + Flask: 4646
And just Lusat with normal cast: 1697 (didn't test more, as just this is so low)
So with full build I was able to deal 4.5k damage to enemy with 0 Magic Absorption (tested on Trolls and enemies that people use to farm runes with postgame weapon).
3rd and 2nd to last bosses changed phase after just 2 casts of Night Comet. Fire Giant needed just a bit more to change phase/be killed. And some of the optional (even late game) bosses died with 1-2 charged casts. And even Malenia was too easy with this
This is great but you make magic glintblade seem useless and it's actually very solid for invaders or mobile bosses.
We need an incantation video
collapsing stars also put birds out of the sky if a single one hits them giving you more than enough time to either stab them to death or make a second cast.
Cool video idea im sure its great (havent watched tho lmao) will we get a version for incantations?
update: great vid !
Your comic delivery in these videos remains unmatched. I always look forward to your releases.
I LOVE nightmaden's mist. I use it all the time for any miners that you can't combo and/or melee.
Fun Fact: you can actually use Terra Magica to boost glintstone dragon breath
jsyk: cerulean hidden tear is currently bugged, it only has half its usual duration, theyll prolly fix it next hotfix or patch.
terra magica isnt limited to spells, itll buff things like starscourge swords AR, drop terra and suck em in with the AoW and roflstomp them with the boosted damage, any weapon with magic damage on it will benefit, including magic arrows fired from any bow (specifically horn bow and moon crossbow will get a better benefit)
12:17 You can use that one bottle talisman that negates sound to pair with this, and congrats your now the definition of stealth.
It’s strange to see how much happier Rusty is in his older videos
They could buff Tibia Summons until it's the best spell in the game and I would still resent it for not being an actual summoning spell.
I’ve watched a shit ton of elden ring videos and I must say you have the most entertaining ones
night maidens mist is hilarious because absolutely no enemies try to avoid it. i dont even use sorceries i have a dex build but i made sure i had enough into to use it
About Briars of Punishment/Sin: they are strong, but only if you are using albinauric staff. That arcane scaling makes those sorceries do a lot of bleed and damage.
0:56 use the Albinauric’s Staff and the Alberich’s set
Does this mean there will be an incantation video?
Love your opinions on most of these videos but Magic glintblade is possibly one of the most reliable sorceries in this game. Charge the first one the most, reduce the charging time slightly on subsequent spells and just watch 10 blades hit the enemy at once with a big burst. If that wasn't good enough, it is very good at just cast and forget damage, it will track the opponent very well.
You forgot about night comet? Scales so freaking well and 30% boosted by staff of loss
Adulas moonblade and how good scaled knight armor looks, is why I'm stuck playing a frost mage for God knows how long
Starlight provides more light than a lantern while not costing a hand slot. Obviously you only equip it when your going into dark caves, also RPing as a wizard with a convenience spell for every occasion is sweet as hell.
Hey, stop stepping on the hose for my copium tank.
Speedrunning Rusty videos rn. Anybody else notice how he occasionally says something kinda funny like “larger than 2 seconds” in this video or like other things that aren’t exactly wrong but definitely aren’t correct 😂
The two spells I used the most in my first play through wqs glintblade and my son rock sling
Ancient Death Rancor is my main spell, it just stops most in their tracks while you smoke them.
with unseen form if you run the black knife assassin chest or the silent step incant or even the talisman for it you're basically entirely invisible to mobs
What if-
> Starlight also slightly reduced Magic damage dealt and mitigated by enemies within its Light radius while active, and had a base duration of ~90-120 seconds (based on Spell Buff), but
> Every time you're hit while it's active, its duration depletes based on what percentage of your max. HP the attack dealt (ex. 50% of your max HP reduced the remaining duration by 30 seconds.)
12:16 there is a talisman that eliminates all noise footsteps make
Very helpful! Thank you Rusty
The moon sorceries also block some projectile spells so that’s always fun
Magic Glint Blade is really good against Black Knife Assassins and other very dodgy enemies, this is because they tend to dodge when you cast the spell not when the projectile actually starts moving
Magic Glintblade is honestly the coolest looking simple spell to me. Just feel like Im in an anime when I use it
Gravity spells are the best ones. Stops bats, birds, or anything flying. Rock sling can be range extended to cheese almost everything.
