I personally thought it was a bit contrived to have him be a veteran of the first battle of Harvest, I get they did that to set up the story of him meeting Johnson and joining his squad, but it kinda just poses further questions like why have both him and Johnson been stuck at the same rank for like 30 years?
In normal circumstances I could get it, career privates are a thing in the real military and kinda always have been, but in a war as devastating as the Human-Covenant War? we're literally dealing with another WW2 every few weeks in terms of casualties in that conflict.
You're telling me that humans are dying by the tens and hundreds of millions and they didn't even make this man a fucking corporal?
It's so ridiculous that it implies some kind of ridiculous demotion as a punishment for something right before the game starts, like there's no way he wasn't a squad leader at least by that point. If they expanded on it that way and had him and Avery be kind of co-sergeants in the same company commanding different platoons on Reach or something, and then there's an accident or something happened resulting in say the loss of his entire squad and the demotion of Jenkins for failing an objective, ultimately ending with a dejected Jenkins silently re-joining his old squad as a lowly private, that could be a cool twist and in that case I would say it kind of completes the picture of his life, but as it stands, game Jenkins and lore Jenkins kinda feel like two different people. You'd think a guy who's known Johnson for 30 years would be more talkative, private or not.

There’s a great quote from The Office, of all places that’s very fitting with what you just said: “I wish there was a way to know you're in the good old days before you’ve actually left them”.
More good is ahead of you too though. Change can be scary but it’s good for you. It’s hard to remember that at one point, any place you call home was once foreign and scary too, before it became the comfort you now know. You may be leaving one era behind but who knows, maybe the next one will be just as good as the last.
Thank you very much. I’m glad you appreciate them ❤️

Something I thought was interesting about Contact Harvest was how the reason Jenkins and most of the other recruits were out of shape is because most of the manual labor was handled by robotic harvesters that were overseen by the planet’s smart agriculture ai. Unfortunately, I haven’t gotten around to reading much more of the book and I’m at the part where they’re about to have Johnson and some others hide aboard a ship thinking they’ll be jumped by Rebels. I already knew how the story would play out so spoilers don’t really bother me, and for whatever reason in most cases they haven’t. Thankfully, knowing how a story plays out ahead of time doesn’t ruin it for me, unless there’s a twist. I wish that they would’ve had Joseph Staten write more books in the Halo universe. From what I’ve heard that one with the Prophet super soldier (forgot what they were called) and the experimental Ring that was going to be used to kill the Elites was really good.
Something else that’s really interesting is just how obvious it is that Bungie borrowed various elements from Aliens. With the Flood reveal the Elites who have open chests are a clear reference to people who’ve been Facehugged (there’s also an unused marine version, and in the storyboards when they get jumped by Infection Forms when one of the marines tries to pull an Infection Form off his friend the guy’s friend’s chest would’ve been ripped right open. That would’ve been more impactful than the guy just laying down after having the thing pulled off him and showed how dangerous they can be). Some of the weapons have digital bullet counters like the Pulse Rifles do, and in an earlier build of the game the Assault Rifle had a grenade launcher (too bad that didn’t make it into the game). Infection Forms jump at you like Facehuggers do. The Pelicans also look like those one Colonial Marines dropships do. There’s other things I can’t remember.
Whenever I think about my favorite part of the Flood book my brain switches between the parts with Yayap and Zuka, Keyes merging with the Proto-Gravemind, and Jenkins’s infection. If I were in his shoes I’d probably want to end it all because constant pain and being a passenger in your own body would be a truly horrific experience. I liked how even when he was in that horrible state he tried to help people by notifying them when’re the Flood’s invasion force would come from and recognized that if the ship made it to earth everyone would die.
What other characters do you think you’ll do videos on? Are any of the Prophets on your list, or maybe not? If you ever do a Truth video you should watch 2’s storyboards because his plan actually made sense. Apparently, in Divine Wind they made it so he planned on wiping the slate clean so that a bunch of other Prophets who were hiding in a Shield World could colonize the galaxy. I personally prefer 2’s original ending where in a way the Great Journey’s promise of ascending to godhood was very real, but ONLY for Truth (ties in with the “big reveal”. Are you done with me spoiling it, or would you rather just watch the storyboards for yourself?).
Great video. I’ve been looking forward to this.

Alien, Ringworld and Starship Troopers were very clearly massive inspirations. Also the Bible. Obviously. Thinking about doing a video talking about that at some point.
I’m playing around with doing a full story video for the Didact but haven’t started that yet because frankly, it’ll be an absolute mammoth video that I’m intimidated to undertake. Aside from that, I don’t have any other characters in mind. Not that I wouldn’t do them, just haven’t thought about it.
The storyboards aren’t canon so I couldn’t care less if you talk about them.
      Thanks!

      1/2:
Oh yeah, I forgot about some of those. I should REALLY get around to reading or listening to those Ringworld books since I’ve heard good things about them. I read the Starship Troopers book and really enjoyed it. The movie was entertaining, but it was also really dumb (I know it’s a parody and meant to be that way. I just prefer the book). That will be a cool video. I know ODST took inspiration from Dante’s Inferno (too bad Bungie didn’t make the comparisons more apparent. They could’ve done things like have Gluttony be an area of the city with a lot of restaurants, Greed is a banking/investment area, Lust is a seedy Red Light district, and other stuff like that. They also should’ve had Elites, and after a certain point you’d have Brutes and Elites fighting to represent Treachery. Sadly, a combination of time constraints, the 360ms hardware, and the BLAM engine held the game back. You’ve already heard me ramble about other issues I have with the game so I won’t repeat myself).
That will be cool to see. I really liked the Didact. Too bad they killed him off in a comic. From what I’ve heard that Halo Epitaph book was really good. Apparently, the author canonized the fan theory that Cortana in 5 was infected by the Logic Plague, and that explains why her character simply does not match up with how she was in the past. Speaking of 5, there’s concept art depicting a Composed and damaged Didact who probably would’ve been the one behind the Guardians. There’s also concept art for partially Composed Elites using Promethean weapons (this would’ve tied in really well with the Storm Covenant’s ideology where they rejected the belief in the Great Journey and recontextualized becoming Gods as using Forerunner technology to ascend. They could’ve had a “transhumanist” spin to the faction where they’d merge with technology to become greater). It’s such a shame 5 turned out the way it did. I remember being so hyped for the game. People forgot just how good and deceptive 5’s marketing was. It advertised a COMPLETELY different game from what we’d get in retail. The dualistic Chief vs Locke ads were super cool, and from what I’ve heard that Hunter the Truth audio drama was truly phenomenal.

      2/2:
Ok. In the storyboards the Ark (later changed to the portal to the Ark in 3) would’ve been located on earth where modern humans first originated some 100,000 years ago, and Forerunners just so happened to disappear after firing the Array. Some of the events in 3 like Chief crashing to earth using one of the Forerunner ship’s doors as a heat shield, fighting through a bunch of Brutes and Scarabs, and the Elites showing up to aid humanity would’ve still happened. When the Arbiter confronts Truth it would’ve been revealed that Truth knew all along what the Rings would do, that they’d kill everything (we have cut Arbiter dialogue that was found in a Reach Beta). In fact it was his plan all along to wipe the slate clean. Upon hearing this the Arbiter would be disgusted then he’d removed his helmet and throw it on the ground, rejecting the title that Truth gave him. After killing Truth and deactivating the Rings the two would go their separate ways. Chief would fight his way through a pack of Brutes, and Arbiter would follow after Spark. They’d then reach the Ark’s central chamber and see a floating sarcophagus that appeared to be sending out a signal across the planet. Rubble would fall from the ceiling and after the dust clears the Arbiter would peer into the cracked open sarcophagus to see a humanoid skeleton who acted as a holotype for the Ark to guide the evolution of indigenous life along a desired path. You can only imagine just how devastating this revelation would’ve been. Not only had the Prophets been using his kind as pawns and leading them to slaughter, but they had also ordered the systematic eradication of the children of their gods. The Arbiter would then grab onto Spark and they’d fly out through the Ark’s ceiling since their exit had been blocked. Truth’s plan was to wipe the slate clean and use the Ark’s machinery to create a new species based on his genome, becoming God that way (the being who activated the Array and had been guiding our development was implied to be the Abrahamic god. Some of the more mythical Bible stories like Noah building an Ark to save life form a coming Flood and God creating man in his image would’ve been recontextualized in Halo as symbolic retellings of Forerunner history and how they created us by molding apes into the image of Forerunners). The reason he killed off the other two hierarchs was to eliminate competition and he plunged his own empire into civil war to insure they’d be far too distracted with killing each other to figure out what he was doing. While all of this was happening he’d be safe beneath the Ark’s shield getting ready to start up the reseeding process in his image. The reason he didn’t care about his species potentially going extinct, High Charity falling, or causing yet another galactic Flood outbreak is because none of that would’ve mattered anyways once the Rings were fired. By the end of this humans would be free of the Forerunner’s influence, and Elites would be free of the Prophet’s lies. Both species would then be free to choose their own destinies going forwards.
I prefer that ending over what we got because Truth’s plan was perfectly coherent (one of the few things he didn’t account for was humans and Elites fighting together to take him down, and if that hadn’t happened he almost certainly would’ve won), the Arbiter would’ve gone through a complete arc, and it would’ve firmly cemented Forerunners as ancient humans or at least just the progenitors of humanity. The whole point of the Human Covenant War was to cover up the fact that our existence as Forerunners who were “left behind” disproved the belief that everyone who believed would be saved by the Rings, and it invalidated the Covenant’s claims to be the true inheritors of the Forerunner’s legacy/technology. For the super majority of Bungie’s run humans and Forerunners were one in the same. It was just kept vague as to whether or not we were literal Forerunners or hominids molded into Forerunners like in 2’s original ending (it would’ve had to have been the latter since Halo was originally meant to take place in our real world, and you can’t really reconcile literal ancient humans having a galactic empire with what we know about our origins from the fossils record. 343’s visual design for the Forerunners would still work if this were the case because the process of creating Forerunners out of apes wouldn’t be exact). The only outliers to this were the few things Frank O’Conner had direct control over in 3 (the rest of 3 was clearly made with Forerunners being humans in mind. Truth and the Gravemind both allude to it, and Guilty Spark outright tells Chief that he’s a Forerunner. Things in the main story take precedence over marketing material and Easter eggs. Speaking of Easter eggs, whenever you activate the terminals reversed speech saying “access granted” or “lineage confirmed” will play. Plus, Contact Harvest written by Joseph Staten came out after 3, so it also supersedes Frank’s retcons). It would be nice if we could change it back, but the split is instrumental to so much of the new lore that you’d have to reboot the whole series (and I don’t truth 343 with that based on their record). I’m not a fan of the changes because it takes away the poetic irony of the war, but there are also things I really like that wouldn’t be part of the setting if the split didn’t occur. For one thing the Didact wouldn’t be the man he is without the separation, and the two specie going to war shaped his worldview. I also like the Forerunner shaving a flawed society where their fall was just as much their own fault as it was from an outside force. I find political intrigue to be far more interesting than them being naturally benevolent and heroically sacrificing themselves like in 3’s terminals. Another example of 343ms lore I really like is how after 3 when the Covenant dissolved it wasn’t some magical peace, but it instead broke into numerous pieces that were all vying for power. In real life militant groups don’t just magically disappear after the leadership is gone, and instead splinter into various warring factions that diverge with time (this part would still work with the old canon because unlike 2’s original ending where the entirety of the Elites stop their war of extermination upon learning that humans are the children of their gods almost NOBODY actually knew the truth that humans were Forerunners. It’s only logical that you’d still have lots of people with warped views about who their gods were). I really liked Cortana dying from Rampancy in 4, but I now realize that’s not how Rampancy was supposed to work. There’s various things I really liked in 343’s canon, but they did change a lot. I’m not trying to berate you or call you an idiot for getting some of these wrong in the past. In fact, I was in the same boat as you regarding the Forerunners for the longest time until I was shown definitive proof that I was wrong. I’m also not going to say that “you’re a fake fan” for liking the directing 343 went with some of these. With some franchises there’s some major retcons that I really liked, and something like Elder Scrolls is just filled with those (my thoughts on retcons are that you should strive for accuracy, but if you’re going to change something you’d better replace it with something that’s either equal to or greater than what came before. In the past I’ve listed a few changes Bungie made to Halo’s lore, along with changes I’d like to see happen). I’m also of the opinion that people should be able to criticize what they like, and that they should be consistent. What I mean by that is I’ve seen various people giving Bungie a pass for certain missteps, while simultaneously savaging 343 for the same pitfalls.

@shreksnow1918 epitaph is AMAZING. I loved every second. One of those extremely rare books that I read like 200 pages of in one sitting. You mentioned you don’t mind spoilers so I’ll say this: yes, the logic plague had everything to do with her behavior, as it did his in Halo 4.
Hunt the Truth and the marketing campaign for Halo 5 is genuinely some of the best Halo content out there. Which is kinda crazy to think about. I don’t hate Halo 5, personally but the marketing was way cooler than the actual game.
