As a Land Cruiser enthusiast and owner of a 1978 BJ40, 1989 BJ74 and 1992 HZJ75 I can say that whatever you do with YOUR FJ45 is up to you (like you need to be told that!) and I think it is great. Most of us would never get the thing back on the road. So for you to make it into your rock crawler and it still has the soul of the FJ45. I reckon it will be awesome. Looking forward to seeing it in work and completed.

Not everyone of them needs to be saved into an over restored trailer queen.
I know that whatever you build will be awesome.
Just have fun and stay safe.

I must say that one reason I really appreciate your channel is I unexpectedly learned how to get shit done. I was great at making excuses, blaming lack of skills and/ or knowledge, no real father figure, to nervous to make a mistake etc, so I'd never even start... after watching all of videos over the last 12+ months and watching how you just go for it, and don't dwell on the problems. You fought those rivets and didn't lose your temper and start to verbally abuse the vehicle... possibly throwing a hammer or kicking something that shouldn't be kicked.. then you didn't dwell on it once you'd gotten your victory. Not dwelling and just start.. You got me out of my head enough to actually start doing. Like you I've pretty much learned everything I know from hands on experience... over the years and some personal traumas I forgot who I was and what we're capable of as human beings. I wanted to say thank you for sharing the videos.

In 72 i was posted to Germany with the RCMP. My second day there I saw a new FJ for sale and fell madly in love and bought her. After my 3 year posting was up the govt. had to pay to ship all my belongings back home and I was so happy to have it there, so many adventures around Alberta and B.C. After my second child came along I mad the worst decision and sold her off, 7 T PTO winch and all. I hope your beast will give you as many hours of pleasure as mine did, don't worry about the critics, it will always be a 45 Cal. BEAST. Look forward to fallowing your adventure, Cheers, Billy in Canada

"Stories with Paul" should be a regular segment. Having grown up out in the country myself, I could only imagine the stories he has to tell! Caddy's of that era had 3 horns where most other cars only had 2, a high and a mid. Cadillac added a low range to give it that extra "authority". I had a 70 Sedan DeVille for a short time. I cut the low range horn out and kept it. I would wire it into whatever I was driving at the time so my horn was always awesome. Last car it was in was a 67 Fairlane which I wrecked. Forgot to pull the horn before it was hauled off.

I had to sympathize with Paul’s boy when the horn went off. I was working under the hood in the driveway while my three year old son was cranking back and forth on the wheel, “driving” the car. I was working on something that needed power so the key was on. As I leaned my head down to get a better look at the problem my dear boy found the horn button! I found the bottom side of the hood with the back of my head. ;^) at first he cried when the noise scared him but then he started laughing when he saw the look on my face. He’s nearly 50 now, and still gets a chuckle out of that once in a while.

Nobody can tell you what to do, it's yours make it what you want, funny story though I was at the dealership picking up my new Taco TRD off-road last month , and there was a fully rebuilt fj40 in the showroom that the dealer had done, made totally stock , had a 130k price on it and they said someone was very interested in buying it, I wonder what what an original us fj45 would be worth in the same condition....

This brings back memories of an small incidence that happened back around 1971. My cousin and her husband were living off the grid type of people. In 1969 he purchased a brand new FJ45. We went up to visit them and he took me out to show me his pride and joy and then he said let's go for a ride. He decided since it was a beautiful day that he wanted the top off so we removed it and went off-roading for a couple of hours. We got back around supper time so we went into eat. We sat in the house and talked for an hour or so and then went out to put the top back on. When we got to the truck I have never seen anyone get quite that angry. Seems while we were in the cabin his dozen or so goats had discovered the truck and decided to eat the seats leaving only the frame, some springs, and little bits of foam rubber and fabric. Next day he got a quote from an upholstery shop to redo the seats and it was fairly steep but nowhere near what Toyota wanted for new. We left the truck there and headed back in my car. When we got to the plantation there was another truck parked their. He said it was the vet and as we walked up my cousin came out to explain. Seems the goats were doing rather poorly after we left so she had called the vet and explained what had happened and he told her if the goats were not operated on immediately, they would die since goats can't digest foam rubber. About an hour later my wife and I left for home. The subject has never come up in all these years.......lol

I build scale models and there is a saying of “build it for you”
So…..It’s your FJ now, build it how you want it and then enjoy it. Love those trucks and looking forward to seeing come together.

That thing is going to be nice, the good thing about you modifying it is the spare parts can go to a restoration fanatic, win, win as you say.

The FJ45 was an awesome truck and fast became a mainstay workhorse for farmers on the steep hill country of NZ.
Quickly outpacing the dated and more expensive land rover that Kiwi farmers had previously relied on.
Although the FJ was more prone to rust than the Landi, it took over the market because of its off road prowes and solid turn key reliability.
That transfer case shift worked just fine.
Enjoying your channel, ex Kiwi in AZ

I'm all in on this build. Have you considered moving the rear axle as far back as you can to improve the approach angels or is this looking more cross country? The down low approach will be a good look for this old girl. Certainly she was at her end and this is going to be her resurrection. These have great chassis and with the length you have lots of room for over/under drive combinations. I'm sure it will be iconic. Diesel maybe but we will be here to cheer you along.

The vacuum line to the tcase engaged the front differential. Mine still works flawlessly and it's all original parts. They don't make em like they used to. I love seeing this.

I just got done watching a video at Jonathon Ward you tube channel. He restored a FJ45 to modern specs, plus he made a crew cab out of it. It looks real good. It was an old video from 2016. This Jonathon Ward he refurbishes old Land Cruisers, from the 80s and 90s. They use all modern suspension parts and put LS3 engines in them. I have no idea what one costs, but I would bet they are very expensive. It is just cool to see what he does with these old Toyotas. Years ago there was a FJ45 in Wellton, AZ. It belonged to a widowed lady whose late husband had bought it. I don't remember the year it was, but wow. Here I was looking at a piece of Toyota history. I have no idea if she is still alive or what happened to the FJ. I am thinking that was about 2014. I retired in 2016, and the only reason I would even be out in Wellton was my job. What this Jonathon Ward and his company does with old Land Cruisers is quite amazing.

We all know better than that don`t we. The frames on these were so much better than jeeps of the day. Thanks for the content Y`all
