  • I've looked at a couple of Monsters with pretty sub par histories in Monster Hunter and have provided some methods to make them more fun. But this time around, I'll be taking a look at a monster who has been good recently but may have some missing potential or has lost something in its history. Today we cover Kushala Daora, the storm dragon. Though he had a really good fight in Monster Hunter Rise, his wind aura was diminished into near irrelevance. We're going to see if I can make the wind aura fun and blend it into the combat of Kushala Daora effectively.

The wind aura being deactivated after wind attacks ties in nicely with the „ your turn my turn“ theme of monster hunter combat. If you know Kushala’s tells and avoid a big move you are rewarded with a damage opportunity but if you go in to early and get hit you’ll get knocked away and thus can’t capitalize on the wind aura being down. I really like the idea of this mechanic.

The only time i felt that turn based dynamic was forced on my in World was in fact AT kushala. He would 1 shot and you can't build for it as much, because it's non elemental damage, so i had to do that pace for it. Slowed the hunt considerably and made it annoying but i did kill him as many times as i needed to to make the couples pieces of his armor that i wanted. Then i just used those 2 and 1 of his normal pieces to make an anti wind set to kill him for the rest of the armor because i wanted to collect AT armor sets. Those initial hunts were the only time this dynamic wasn't fun and it was most of what sapped my joy in the experience.

Glad you agree. I know Monster Hunter isn’t strictly your turn my turn but proper knowledge of a fight makes it kinda skew that way and Kushala could work well as a very strong example of it

The only thing I would add, but I'd add this for ALL flying wyvern; they fly less when their wings are broken. I'm really a fan of part breaks having impact on fights, like Barioth slipping when his front claws are broken, so having them fly unsteadily and land more quickly when you've broken their wings would be great.
But yes, I agree with everything you said. Get the Poison back, make his wind pressure both effective but not perpetual, and get him out of those tornadoes.

I agree with ya. I know the Raths have that hurt flying animation when you break their wings in World, but as a default I do thing broken wings should mean less flying

Another idea with the wind aura. What if the bigger the wind attack, the longer the aura is shut down. For example, his wind beam would shut it down for a little bit, his tornado flurry would shut it down longer, and his big suction tornado ultimate shuts it down for even longer. Makes it seem like he doesn't have infinite wind and he has to take wind from his aura to use his stronger wind moves

Definitely a cool idea but a little tougher to balance the differentiating numbers

His wind barrier is very touchy thing to get right and really easy to get wrong. Your idea on it has merit but if not balanced properly it would make the hunt a time killer again. I hole heartedly agree that bringing back all the layers of the wind barrier would make more fun.
On Rusted I really like your concept on him but I would like to add that if Rusted lost its ability to use its wind barrier until it enrages because of all the armor would be neat. On the hole repel mechanic I can't really say I would like seeing it comeback or not as I never had to deal with it but it could be interesting if balanced correctly in Wilds.

What a great coincidence: this video came out right when i was fighting Rusted Kushala in 4U for the first time. Not in the high rank story, but in his G rank slaying quest on the Polar Field. And goddamn, he's tough. The fact that i had to fail three attempts at the Polar Field and one at the Battlequarters before finally beating him, even in full Chameleos armor and Greatsword with critical and punishing draw, speaks for how strong this monster is. Having to chase it throught the continent, sustaining the battle for multiple days before finally being able to take it down, makes it really easy to be convinced that you're up against something legendary and ancient, almost too tough to even die: an elder dragon.
The way i visualize your phase 2 idea for Rusted includes a moveset comparable to that of Risen Kushala, with Alatreon levels of dragon element usage on the physical moves. On top of that, the comeback of 4U Rusted's side hops, along with a myriad of other repositioning movements. It doesn't make sense for Rusted to display more agility than base form the way it does in 4U, but an unarmored Rusted which's free of all the heavy weight it's used to carrying in normal conditions should indeed become capable of any aerial or land stunt it pleases, at any direction or speed. Just imagine a pearl white Kushala tenaciously trying to find or create a gap in your defenses, always going for your flanks or back with quick bursts of dragon-infused attacks. Amazing idea man.

Naked Kushala going berserk as a last ditch effort to survive would be an amazing fight. We know Kushala tries to hide and run away from threats when rusted to get to remote locations and shed, so it makes perfect sense that if we cornered one before it could shed it would be desperate to kill us so it can shed and harden. If Rusted is already doing heavy versions of its attacks (and maybe not channeling Dragon element) then being super fast and chaotically elemental while having increased hit zones right at the end would be a cool turn in the fight. If they buff Elder Dragons to require the Repel mechanic to return it would be even cooler to have a first phase of the fight where your party gears up for defense and Mind's Eye or partbreaker, but then a second attempt where you have to equip evasive skills and better elemental damage.
Also the Have your Cake and Eat it too saying should be said the other way around, because the intent of it is to still have your cake after eating it, which is impossible

Personally I would like a relative species for Kushala Daora, one that could fill a niche similar to rusted, but be further from Kushala in this case shedding its scales constantly rather then all at once. It would live in the dessert and its scales migrate to the tips of its wings before they are shed, as such the sand is littered with small shards of metal. This would result in its wind attacks inflicting bleed, using the shards in the sand when possible but when sand is not present using the built up shards on the edges of its wings.
To offer a bit of gameplay niche partitioning between this and Kushala Daora, this would have lightning replace Kushala's dragon element. This would also essentially power it up beyond Kushala(from a gameplay perceptive not lore), as when it does its dragon pounce it would also create lighting bolts from the sky increase the effected area. Partially as a call back to Rusted Kushala this would have bronze coloured scales, and only at the start of the hunt slight amount of blue on the edges of the wings.
I think this would result in some interesting ecology, as it would enrich the sand in the dessert and create an almost plankton like food source for sand diggers, but also completely change how animals around it evolve as they have to deal with the razor sharp bits of metal in the sand.

Ah, I was waiting for a video on one of my favorite monsters, thanks. And I will present ideas of my own following your own ideas.
    1. the wind. I would keep everything you added because it makes sense and he has to be the shadow in the storm. I think he should have three wind aura levels which increases with time as long as he's not poisonned, knocked down or staggered. As of master rank we have:
    - Lv1, normal wind armour (no knockback): just like Amatsu, Kushala possesses a basic wind aura allowing him to move his heavy carcass around easily (he's still fast without it, but he doesn't jump around the hunter). He uses small bursts of wind with his head, front limbs & tail to repel hunters.
    - Lv2, strong wind aura (normal knockback, conter with Lv2 wind negation): that's where Kushala really starts to be dangerous and starts using huge wind attacks (basically the wind breaths & bigger bursts from Lv1). He baits hunters wind the wind mecanics you (re-) introduced and punishes greed with pain. in this state, he will often use Eo Garudia currents (I like the idea and its weaker than the big scary black dragon wind tornado). I would give him the big tornado move, but change it into a straitfoward repelling tornado burst.
-Lv3, draconnic wind aura (strong knock back, must have Kushala's/Chameleos's blessing): When enraged with Lv2 aura, his dragon heart allows Kushala to chanel dragon element in his physical and wind attacks. You have to knock him out of this state or, just la Teostra, he will create a vaccum bomb (like his ult in Rise/Sunbreak, but more powerful)
I would change the part breaking mecanic to change what is weakened, but it remains brekable around 50-60% health. Tail: no Lv1; wings: smaller tornados; head: no Lv3. Poison works wonders on him, but puts him in a really bad mood (as soon as the poison breaks, he goes Lv3)
    2. The variants:
    - Rusted is as you said, its magnificent. I like to think he should have a unique weapon/armour skill increasing affinity as your sharpness decreases
    - peeled Kushala is pure theory joy
I would add a new rare species/variant: the Gilded Kushala. A variant struck by lightning around the time he molts and stuck in a permanant suffering and enraged state (like chaotic gore) and his rage mode would make you shudder (look at the Divine Beast Lion Dance from Elden Ring's dlc). He rises into the air and lets a blood curling cry as he's sure to die soon, but not without a fight. he possesses the magnetic element rather than pure dragon and his winds carry magnetic shards dealing bleed damage. He will use everything in his bag to bring you down with him.
its long, but I was really inspired by the video

As someone who loves the ecology/biology of the environments and creatures of these games- I adore the versions of Kushala and Rusted Kushala you envision! Their design and lore are fascinating, but the fight has always fallen short in some way in my opinion. So your ideas of changing up their mechanics to keep the fight challenging but still enjoyable would make them worth all the trouble. Your idea for Rusted Kushala is especially cool- Giving the players the reward of a secret fight while tying in the ecology of the creature itself is very clever!
Also, that last point you brought up about the Elders not really feeling special- I agree. They're still really neat, and offer a challenge most of the time. However, unless they're the flagship or an absolute fan favorite, I can't really think of many that's had much of a leadup to their reveal or fanfare really. I'm not asking for a whole game's worth of story for every Elder, but, come on. Namielle deserved better (just as one example out of many)! Which, is quite sad considering how they're really seen as "legendary creatures" in the lore.
So giving the Elders more opportunities to show their intelligence/why they're seen as "mythical" would be very appreciated! Them fleeing/returning in a later quest could be a little tiring when trying to grind out equipment, but I agree it'd be better for the lore and how players perceive them in the end for sure.

For whatever reason, I remember vividly first timing Arch Tempered Kushala Daora in World (before Iceborne gave us Master Rank gear and all that entailed). I think growing up with Kushala meant I was already 'primed for bullshit' -- but I recently returned to Generations Ultimate and my god this dude plays with my ass like he's doing a Buddy Rich solo.
I do think Rise was a great start for his rework, but I'd need to see a newer iteration (hopefully in Wilds assuming everyone doesnt have OG Elder Dragon fatigue) and how he works in a more grounded sense both in combat and visuals. Rise's artstyle and levels lends itself to visual clarity which meant gauging his moveset and his threat zones much easier, whereas it was a bit awkward to gauge Worlds due to how many slopes and slants you can fight on and how visually in general that game could get.
Sorry for the rambling just procrastinating a project of my own and felt the need to splurge.
unrelated side note; people complain about Daora's constant vortexes but if you've ever played Dragon's Dogma and been hit by the Tornado magic in THAT... World Daora is a meditative retreat in comparison lmao.

Kushala seems like a perfect pick to return for Wilds. I can see his wind attacks having different effects depending on what map you fight him in (i.e., his tornadoes becoming sandstorms in the windward plains). I think it'd also be cool if his attacks were amplified if you thought him in stormy weather, as a way of incorporating Wild's 'seasons' into the fight.

  • @heek8964
    @heek8964 Месяц назад +1

I like a lot of the ideas that you bring up here, but I have a few problems.
First up and the biggest one, while I think your idea of the wind armor coming in and out works pretty well, it ignores one of the biggest problems with it in world(for me), in that it makes kinsect glaive completely non-viable while the armor is up, as it's impossible to jump around only his head/tail, and you're guaranteed to get knocked out of the air after only one or two hits. I think a solution to this would be to either make the armor have to be directed to a smaller portion of his body, so top, bottom, front, left, right, or to make it so that it doesn't knock you out of your attack and back to the ground with aerial attacks, and instead just pushes you in one direction, making it a much more engaging fight for aerial combat, as you now need to try and account for wind direction and speed when aiming yourself, or just be more accurate with your predictions of the monster's movement if it just pushes you directly away from him from all angles.
Secondly I think the wind armor change would work better if it also coincided with him running from one end of the arena to the other WAY less, as the opportunities made by the wind armor would by entirely inaccessable way too often for slower weapons that you need to put away and run towards him between attacks whenever he moves like gunlance or greatsword. You could balance this by making the timing tighter so that the gap is only available for 2-3 hits if you've misaligned yourself with the head or tail, but are still in position to attack as soon as it's down, though this is less of a concern with all weapons getting faster and faster.
Thirdly regarding the stationary tornadoes, you describe your changes as still being a "get off me" move, or a way for him to disengage, when that's just not true. Him having a way to disengage without running away entirely IS the problem with that attack in world, what you've done is change it from a disengage to a ZONING attack, which is fantastic, and exactly what ALL of his tornado attacks should be.
And lastly, not a problem but a suggestion for rusted, I think it would work a lot better if you flavor it not just as him getting lighter and faster, but also his armor getting weaker and his wind getting maybe not stronger but bigger, as more of his wind organs are revealed and less armor is focusing the wind he generates. So once his armor is off you'd get larger attacks that require tighter and quicker reactions to his telegraphs to get out of instead of just doing more damage. He would move around WAY more and be difficult to even land a few good hits on. BUT just landing a few good hits on him would be all you need to finish him off, because you've stripped him of all of his armors his hitzones all go from 15-25% to like 70-100%, making where you hit him less important, and allowing you to kill him way faster if you're good enough to both shed his armor early and continuously land hits in his super fast hidden phase. A change like this would make the skill ceiling for this fight way higher, making him way more enjoyable to farm, without increasing the skill floor to beat him and his secret phase that much at all.

The wind Mechanism was and is the hardest thing about Kushala to balance.
His Moveset overall is almost perfect for me in rise but I find you're ideas very intriguing. What I want him to have is more air attacks. But they don't waste time like Rathalos did in Rise.
I also would love if Windpressure was turned into an actual attack like Tigrex does with sound. Give him a powerful Wingslam or make the mini Tornadoes from Iceborne be able to be controlled and moved by him. If he's the master of wind then make the most of it.
He could also benefit from the new weather in Wilds.

Speaking of weather, I really liked how it changed if a elder dragon was in the area in world. Like the stormy sky when you fight Kirin. If the goal is to make Kushala feel imposing it should definitely be stormy during the quest. It could totally just be ambient but the atmosphere of a map devoid of life and big gusts of wind ravaging the land with this one creature at the center of it all would make for a great atmosphere.

Kush is THE Elder Dragon to me so I probably went into this a bit defensive but all of these changes sound great! I like how you didn’t neuter Kushala with Partbreaker but also incentivize its use with Rusted to get the Pearlescent form.

Another idea for Rusted is that he struggles to release his wind power. Much like his physical attacks there would be a delay to his wind bursts as he struggles to force wind through the rusted shut wind vents. Instead of a constant wind barrier he periodically releases a large wind burst.

i love your concept of rusted kushala daora but imagine it if he had a raging brachydios like mechanic merged with prime malzeno: when he has low hp he goes into his lair, he moults with a badass animation and becomes that pale berserk kushala and he casts a wind arena around the area that works like the fog in the souls like games, where you can enter but cannot exit. His wind aura is gone due to him spending it all for the arena and now he is all fast dragon element attacks rampage till he dies.
You can use his old skin as a cover from his ultimate attack ( as we did with safi jiiva’s nova).
And to make him more lore friendly, after a certain time, kushala’s armor hardens again, making him a normal kushala and he just flys away. The quest will still considered complete cause you repelled him and you can still carve his old skin, but you would have fewer rewords because you didn’t kill him

changing topic, i remember my first elder dragon hunt in old gen (freedom unite) after playing world, it was indeed a kushala. And i remember preparing hours and hours before hunting an elder dragon and still getting truble fighting him, and it was FUN, i loved him to feel like something outside the ecosystem, something big, hard to fight for my level, something to fear.
I miss this feeling that with time has gone away to facilitate the game. Now some elder dragons are just harder monsters.
I really hope the rework the elders in wilds to make them feel more like a threat for the ecosystem than just an “harder monster “ that can’t be captured.

    • @alessandrocrociani3763
      @alessandrocrociani3763 13 дней назад

speaking about normal kushala instead, i’d like to keep his aura but make it that becomes stronger as he earns the advantage in the fight, punish the hunter if he can’t stand his power but make his aura breakable with certain actions that confuse him and make him momentarily lose concentration so you make him start reforming his aura all over again. This way the fight is punishing if the hunter can’t do enough damage but you can turn the battle in your favor with a good strategy

  • @cchieffkiefbeff

Heres an idea: kush will naturally automatically defend himself from flash bombs in any way you can proceive; but, flashing him during an attack will work but only stun him and not slam him down and the stun duration is much shorter, but certain attacks leave him extra vulnerable that if you exploit will give you a full knockdown with stun and everything. This idea came from my hatred of the simple concept of kush becoming immune to flash exponentially simply because an invisible statistic said so

nah you should obviously take HC Daora's damage reflect for gunners so that if you even so much as think about a bowgun you start hitting yourself
its a very good mechanic i think /s
EDIT: ok i will say for the Rusted Daora third phase thing that it'd have to be done really well, lest it become as painful and annoying as something like Shara's double head break (explicitly required for any of his weapons to be crafted)
otherwise, can't wait to get into a 4-player hunt where 2 people have no idea how to break parts and the monster dies before it becomes possible to get those materials

I haven't got there yet but i think Rusted should be a horrifying superboss, and with that it should deal bleed and poison wrapped together as tetanus. It'd be a cool inversion of the poison weakness, even if it kept it. A poisonable monster dealing poison seems cool.

let me be clear: i like WorldBorne Kushala Daora. had little trouble with him (SnS main, here).
that said, i agree with a commenter: when a flying monster has one or both damaged wings, don't have it fly as often, if not much at all; and if it does fly, it wouldn't stay airborne for very long. Kushala Daora, among every other Elder Dragon, would be no different.
if it's a monster known for flying a lot, then the wings should be the primary focus - like you do with Barioth's forelimbs or Gold Rathian's tail.
as for his wind aura, apply what you said, and have it deflect arrows and throwing knives of any kind, and reduce the damage of bullets. melee weapons work just fine, but the wind will knock you off-balance if you're too close - unless you're a Lance/Gunlance/Longsword user, in which case you can just poke the dragon at a reasonable distance.
also, the wind aura would have a sort of "ammo count": how many wind blasts does he have to fire before his wind aura needs to recharge? and for the charged wind blasts and wind breath, they'll drain the wind aura completely when he finishes the attack, considering how much wind is used for both of them.
"i don't want to waste slots on Wind Resistance" you might say. how about you stop trying to speedrun the monster with big-boi numbers?
my objective is to have fun during the fight, and the skills are basically just QoL features of the battle; not kill the monster as quickly as possible, or do as much damage as possible. besides, i want hunts to last longer than 10 minutes.
with that mentality, i managed to make a build to counter Lunastra, making the fight both doable and tolerable.
*edit:* there's an addendum in the "Let's make Lao Shan Lung fun" video. it states to give him all 14 weapons. Online go tthe SnS, but GU didn't? come on.

  • @cchieffkiefbeff
    @cchieffkiefbeff 26 дней назад

(This was made before i finished the video, but i still feel is worth being here) Also “needs wd40” should have (poison, why? tetanus of course, what else?) a shedded phase at the end of the fight where he becomes god but in a potato body so you can just step on him if you dont immediately get eviscerated by the torrential gales, like prim malz but less blood sucky and more squishy and blowy, or i guess disintegrating
Also he should be a many break man where if you break all his parts he instantly sheds (taikun is a low level crab yet gets one of the best mechanics in monster hunter yet this shell dragon doesnt) and becomes potato and only becomes god at the designated last stalemate, but he should be able to concentrate the wind barrier on certain body parts (teo brotha did so so his bro will do so too) like ones he at the time is using to attack to shield them while the unprotected parts will soften, and certain amounts and different spots of breaks will unlock new stuff for him
Though this might make him a bit too mechanically deep for being a simple variant even if he is an elder one, i dont think rusted kush deserves final boss levels of mechanics even if he never was good before, hes no prim malz or scorned magna, not some big boi important variant storywise, hes just a brown kush who gives tetanus and needs wd40 otherwise he would give us all tinnitus
Seriously DO NOT MAKE HIS SOUND DESIGN ACCURATE, NOTHING WOULD BE WORSE THAN HEARING SQUEAKY SCREECHY METAL FOR 10 MINUTES STRAIGHT

    Hey good video

  • @jockpackage1770
    @jockpackage1770 Месяц назад +1

He at least needs a tail move or 2. Some unique animations for ranged attack, not just tail swipes, to deal with the gunners. Seriously, he's the only elder dragon of that shape/skeleton who DOES NOT HAVE A SINGLE TAIL ATTACK! An entire class of weapons, yes there are only 3 of them, that use to have their own armor just have this weak spot that doesn't fight back at all. Give him a move that's like he spins his tail and it does like a horizontal w tornado beam or something.
Hell, kushala's history is funny. When he was originally tested, his wind aura was a pain for blademaster weapons but gunners made him a joke by never being close enough for it and just shooting him till he died. In response, they said "okay, now the wind makes projectiles bounce off"... But um the head and tail are excluded in this wind aura so that doesn't matter when they can just aim and shoot for either of them. Doubly so if you have the mobility of a bow of lbg and can stay behind him. Triple if you also have other hunters to give you less agro. I do agree that the wind aura in Rise was too weak for melee but they need to solve his gunner issue first. If the ranged weapon issues i laid out got fixed, I'd welcome his World or old games style wind aura for melee with a smile on my face.
I maintain that base World's redesign of his fight is the worst. Iceborne was funny because it made his tornadoes less annoying. Instead of having 3 or 4 massive static area denials, that last too long, you had smaller ones that move in a way where they are attracted to each other. When they collide and fuse together, they make the biggest tornado he has but only for a second. Then they're gone so he has to make more. Rise felt like they just took the 4th gen move set and rusted it up a bit, so he flies less, and weakened the wind aura. This calls into question why they'd ever bring rusted back? If so, he needs a rework too to set him apart from the new original that stole his shtick. I do like some of these rusted ideas in the video.
I like the idea of his attacks shutting down the wind aura for a second.
The wind moving up his body would also, while not fixing his hit boxes for the wind blasts, it would justify why they feel weird. I can't tell you the amount of times i was on his neck and his wind blast his be from behind his skull. Maybe you could also have the wind aura moves offensively for other attacks. Give him the tail moves and maybe some claw slaps with different tells where, if the attack misses you, you can still get knocked back further than his normal wind aura if you are too close to that move.

    • @cr-volcanic

It's not a limb in the same sense. Also the imbalance of most people aiming for the head and having to worry about his frontal attacks as the gunners have nothing to worry about directly if the yare behind him.

They'd knock you if you tried to get more than a single hit in any time other than when they were knocked down, and whenever you tried(and guaranteed failed) to hit them anywhere other than their head(which is ridiculously difficult to hit with MOST melee weapons when they're not knocked down) before your bowgun user poisoned them or their horns were already broken, at which point the fight is basically over because they had so little other than their wind armor that makes the fight difficult or interesting.
