- I picked up a Vance and Hines FuelPak FP3 because the bike is running lean when I added slip ons. I figured I'd knock the catalytic converter to make it breathe even better.

Thx for watching. Easy process and really made it breathe!
Just completed mine today using your tool list 1" x 17 1/2" auger bit from HF. I used an electric drill. Needs to be a 1/2" drive for the auger bit to fit. The cylinder hone was a 4" I purchased from HF. Once I drilled two holes all the way thru I used a long 17" heavy screwdriver to work around the edges of the CAT, tapping and twisting and occasionally running the drill bit inside to break up pieces. Overall it took about 3 hours (with a few breaks) The cylinder hone was a nice touch ... clean as a whistle. Should sound decent now with aftermarket slip ons but not so much with the muffled OEM. This is the best way.
Huge improvement to sound and performance on my 117. Cheers!
I have a dumb question: I also bought the 4" Hone from HF. How the hell do you keep it connected to the drill? The shaft is round on the hone, my drill spins on the round shaft. What am I missing? Sorry, I have never used a hone tool before, newb here.
Great vid. Helped a buddy do this to his 21 RGS. Wasn't to hard of a job neither, and sounds alot better. I went with a fuelmoto header for my 21 Road King Special.
Awesome. Definitely helped my bike also. Cheers!
You're a genius sir. Long LIVE REAL MECHANICS!!
You are funny. I’m just a tinkerer at best. Cheers!
Just did removed the cat from my 19 Street Glide SP and this method worked perfect.
That’s great! Happy it helped. I’m a Mopar guy also, ‘08 SRT8 Challenger. Cheers
Sounds great! Doing it on my 2019 Tri Glide trike as soon as I can get everything together.
Awesome! Easy project.
Thanks for the info and video this is next on my list.
Happy to help! Cheers
Thx for the tip on the bit! Just a tip tho, after you remove your EPA mandated cat, don’t take 4K video of your whole license plate after 😂😂😂 epa cracking down on individuals for this stuff now, it’s wild
Lol. EPA mandated for manufacturers to meet standards. I don’t sweat the small stuff. Cheers!
After all it’s not an anonymous RUclips channel.
Badass bike 👌🏼👍🏼
Thank you! I love it. Cheers!
What type of drill did you use? I don’t know if my 7.5 AMP hammer drill will work. Also what is that you had on your drill at the end to clean the pipe out?
I used a DeWalt drill. Doesn’t need to be a hammer drill, that type bit will auger through either way. It’s a cylinder hone, that I used to clean it up. Cheers!
I just stuck a dog in there and that cat came flying out.👍
Hell yeah Bud ! Hahaha
Great video, what was the second drill bit called you used to clean the pipe? Also, did you use the auto tune mode on your fuel pak to retune your engine?
It was an old cylinder hone I had, has 3 spring loaded stones. I picked the closest tune to what I had in their list of options. I messaged V&H to ask their opinion of my choice and they confirmed it was a good pick. I don’t think I went into the auto tune at all. Unfortunately I didn’t ride it as much as I wanted to this season to fine tune. Big improvement over stock tune for sure.
I did mine tonight using your method and tool recommendations. Thanks! Question: How clean does the tube have to be, in your opinion? And, will some small debris in the back of the head pipe be blown out at start up? I definitely don’t want it sucked into the engine. Thanks!
The cleaner the better but removing the flow obstruction that is the Cat is a huge improvement. No worries, it’ll blow out not suck in. Cheers.
Cylinder hone was a great idea bro.
Thank you kindly.
Did you pull the O2 sensors out when you drilled or are they not close? Looking to do this asap on m '17 RG, already have the FP3 so ready to go. Thanks for the vid.
No I didn’t touch the O2 sensor, easy project. Cheers.
Did you have 02 sensor codes after the cat deleted
Great video! Does the bike have to be re-mapped after? My bike is a 2015 Street Glide with stage 1 done already. I just feel it needs to breath out better now. Hate the heat from the cats here in so-cal. Thanks!
A buddy of mine did his street glide, 103, has slip ons and didn’t change tune from stock. Mine was running lean with slip ons so that why I added the FP3. Seems to vary a lil from bike to bike. I’m close to sea level, 1000’ or less. Cheers
I'm thinking about doing this to my 2011 ultra limited because of how hot it runs now. I already have the FP3 tuner. Does yours run cooler now?
It does run a bit cooler, definitely a nicer sound to it now. Easy mod to make it breathe better. Cheers
I done this on my 107 and lost a ton of back pressure. Power just left the bike. I also have a Redshift 468 cam and still experienced power loss. Any suggestions?
Hmmmm. That’s odd. My buddy did his 107 Street Glide and had no issues. He was the one that suggested I do mine. What tuner are you using? Adding the V&H FP3 tuner and removing my Cat made my 117 a rocket.
This is fantastic. I have a 18 RGS 107 with no tuner (yet) with stock 2 into 1's exhaust that turnout before the bags, I am totally trying this. Any guidance before I take this on? Due to the sharp turnout at the end of the pipe I'm gonna see if I can find a flexible bit or something of the like to drill out the packing. Thanks for the video
Oh after 4 months any noticeable negative effects? Thanks again
A stock 2 into one that turns out before the bags? That’s not HD stock for an RGS. After 4 months, absolutely love the mod. Sound is fantastic and and the V&H FP3 really woke up the 117.
Email me a pic of that exhaust bradh71@ymail.com
I have a 20 roadglide limited. Its running lean too. Thanks for the video. I was wondering how ti fix tht
For sure! Yeah the V&H Fuel pack worked good for me. Cheers!
What was the second drill bit you used to clean more called? Also did you use the auto tune mode on your Fuelpak to tune your bike? Thanks for the Vevideodic
it is a cylinder hone, designed to deglaze piston cylinders
@@KenMrKLC Thanks fr the reply. Have you had any issues with the Vance and Hines FuelPk3 Auto Tune feature with the Catalytic removed?
@@1956jaw I’m not sure why replies to comments don’t show up in notifications…. Anyway, no issues ! Running like a champ and couldn’t be happier. Hope the same for you. Cheers
Sounds good. If you do this you will LOVE the sound but HATE the piwer loss do to no back pressure. The real fix is just ordering header pipes and replacing the whole exhaust. This way your free flow and maintain torque. Yall dont do this. You got a nice expensive bike- spend the money on headers and do it right...
Either you’re in the industry of selling parts, building parts or replacing parts? I haven’t lost any power, nor have anyone I’ve talked to. Thx for your opinions tho. Cheers
I do believe the cat is double wide, and you are only able to reach the right side using the drill bit?? I did hear it pop when throttling
It’s in the single part of the pipe, each cylinder pipe connects to one bigger pipe, then splits again before the slip-ons. Only one spot for the cat 👍 cheers
Nice. Did you notice a big difference in heat and power? How do you like the fp3
Definitely breathes better and the FP3 opens up some parameters for better performance. Can’t say much for heat as I’m in northern Michigan, but I would think it’s cooler as it’s not running as lean as before. Very happy with the upgrade. Cheers!
I just completed the stage 1 installation and the stage 1 ECM flash. If I remove the CAT do I need to re-flash?
I don’t claim to be a tuner at all. My bike was running lean with Slip-Ons, so I thought I would de-Cat since I was adding a tuner. Sorry I can’t be more help.
I have the same bike with S&S oil pump and 475 cams and tuner. Did you have to re-dyno or re-tune the bike after removing the cat?
I didn’t have a tuner prior to removal, added the FP3 during this project. I emailed V&H to confirm closest tune to what I have and it seems to be running great. I live at around 600’ above sea level.
@@yellow72bronco Thanks for the info.
When you first decatted. Did you get a lot of deacceleration noise before you use the tuner.. If so did the tuner eliminate the deacceleration noise..
Cat delete and tuner installed same day. Sorry I can’t help more.
Nice, my question is.While drilling out the cat ,does that dust from the cat go to the engine?
No it does not
Did you have a noticeable loss of torque? Thanks!!! Great video!
Not at all. The 117 is breathing now and the V&H FP3 is pouring more fuel to it. It was a great simple mod for my Bike.
@@yellow72bronco Thank You for answering my question!!! Enjoy your holiday weekend!!!!
I'm planning to remove the cat on my 2017 road king & put straight through fishtails on it , do you think i need to put v&h fp3 or original factory tune is fine ? Thanks
I’m not a tuner by any means, my 117 was running lean when I added slip ons to my factory head pipe, so I pulled the cat since I was adding the tuner. My buddy has a 103 with slip ons, de-catted and no need for a tune. Depends how they factory tuned your bike and where you live as far as altitude. Adding a FP3 can always optimize performance. I need to get my bike on a dyno to see if I need some finer tuning. But I’m happy with it as is, just would like to know if a professional can dial it a bit more. Cheers
@@yellow72bronco amazing thanks for fast reply 🙏🏽 im gonna have to see if throw any lights or not on the dash once i remove those cat , put straight through fishtails on it & eliminate from there. Thanks again 👍🏼😃
Does the auger drilling process of removing the cat cause any stress on the header pipes when keeping them installed on the bike (around the area where it connects to the cylinders and pipe bracket areas)?
it actually drills thru pretty easy. no issues.
@@yellow72bronco It sure did drill easy. My issue is the honing process, specifically connecting it to my drill and not have the drill spin on the round shaft of the hone.
No issues with that for me either. The spring loaded hone didn’t bind at all. Worked like a champ for me.
My issue is connecting the hone to my drill. The shaft on the hone is round and my drill spins around it and the hone doesn't have enough bit on that round shaft to spin the hone (like it would if the hone shaft wasn't round).
If you have a grinder, use it to put a few flat spots on the shaft. Must be an issue with your drill if the chuck won’t tighten the grip
I wanna do this with my 22 ST Road Glide
Do you have to get a fuel management system and different air filter when removing the cat from stock head pipe? Thanks for the video
It seems to vary, I needed it when I added slip ons. I’m still running the CVO air filter it came with. My buddy did cat removal and slip ons to his 107 and didn’t add fuel management. Sorry I can’t give a more definite answer
@@yellow72bronco thnx for the quick response!
trying to find the correct drill bit do you have a link?
I don’t have a link. I think I got it from Home Depot
I was going to buy Tab catless header by after seeing this video what’s the difference really I’m saving $$$ doing it this and I have a screaming eagle tuner and screaming eagle air also will I have to re-tune my bike ???
I would think your S E tuner would be fine
I can’t imagine there would be any noticeable performance difference between a Cat-Free HD head pipe vs aftermarket cat free head pipe. Save your $$. Cheers!
I have a 114 do you have to add a tuner to it I already have slip ons with no baffle
I added the Tuner because where my head pipe meets my slip ons they were turning blue, so it was running lean already. Differs bike to bike for sure. A friend of mine knocked out the cat, has slip ons and no need for tuner. Sorry I can’t be more helpful.
Yello72bronco and Darin Cook. I have a 19 RGS with 114 and did this mod as you described. Free flow air cleaner with KnN and 4.5” slip on’s with no tuner. I have had no issues. Bike runs cooler and pipes sound great! Hope that helps. Thanks for the video.
How long is that drill bit? And thanks for this video.
17.5 “ drill bit. Hope it helps! Was an easy way to do it. Cheers!
yellow72bronco Thanks!
What size Cylinder Hone did you use?
I’m not sure of the size, spring loaded… probably 1-3/4” to 3-1/2” guessing.
Was the packing material hard?
Sorry, missed this comment….. not really hard. It’s a honeycomb type thin material. Drilled through fairly easy.
What the name cylinder tool did you use?
It’s just a cylinder hone. Has 3 stones on it for cutting glaze or scratches on a engine cylinder.
Question, did you remove the baffles as well?
No just the cat.
@@yellow72bronco ok cool, I might do the baffles as well
Was the packing a hard material?
It’s kinda like 8” of tiny honey comb. This drill bit went thru it fine. Once you get a couple holes in it, you get it out in pieces
I want to remove
The baffles from my street cannons and de-cat my 19 street glide special. Do I need a tune or no ? Leaving the stock air cleaner on.
Hard to say for sure. My bike was running lean with slip ons. My buddies bike (17 Street Glide) with slip ons and Cat removed didn’t need a tune. Seems factory tune varies a bit.
What did you use to clean the walls from the left over cat gunk ?
@@tdv1985 I used a cylinder hone. It’s in the video.
@@yellow72bronco I got yours confused with another video. Don't have one, I'll have to improvise lol
@@tdv1985 no prob, I’m sure a little left left behind won’t be an issue. Good luck!
You get no power increase from this. Only less heat for the passenger and a little louder sound.
What size cylinder hone did you use?
Not sure. It’s spring loaded, maybe 1.5” to 3” ?
Thanks for the quick response! Real helpful video. Gonna order the parts and kill the cat this weekend!
Did this affect the tune on the bike?
It was running lean after I added slip-ons. So I needed a tune and purchased the FP3, so I decided to remove the cat at the same time. Runs great!
Do you need a tune after removing the cat? Thx
Not necessarily, I needed a tune when I added slip ons even before Cat removal. My buddy removed his Cat and added slip ons with no tune, no issue. Sorry I can’t be more helpful, but it seems to vary bike to bike.
@yellow72bronco I have a 2021 RGS. Hopefully no tune needed. Thanks!
Any concern of drilling cat dust going into the cylinder if the exhaust valve is open?
I wasn’t. if you were, I guess you could put a shop vac sucking in the other pipe. Wasn’t a dusty project drilling metal. cheers.
That's an excellent point you have! Not a likely situation, but definitely possible!
does the bike throw any codes now that the cat was removed?
No codes
@@yellow72bronco how about a tune did it need one?
It was running lean after I added slip ons. That’s why I pulled the cat since I was in need of tune already
Will removing the cat make the bike run like shit if it’s not tuned? Anybody know?
My buddy pulled the Cat on his 103 and added slip ons with no tune, his is fine. I needed a tune on my 117 before I deleted the Cat.
Nice
Thanks!
I have the SE tuner/ would I need a different tuner if I remove the CAT?
Some people have removed the cat without needing a tuner. My bike was running lean after it added the slip ons. My buddy has slip ons, cat delete and no tuner on his 107.
Next time hold in the clutch and put it in first gear and then Rev it! Way Louder 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
looking at that crossover pipe it appears to be just about worthless
The crossover pipe is useless? I guess most flow goes out the right pipe but it depends what you have for baffles. If those are gutted also then yes, but mine are intact. Appearance more than anything perhaps. Cheers!
Cutting takes 2 min get it all put nice and clean 5 min weld back I don't agree this way is better at all .
You’re entitled to your opinion. Show your process. No sparks from cutting or welding, didn’t have to disconnect the battery to protect the ECM. Cheers
Also, not everyone has a welder ……..
What about the O2 sensor????
Doesn’t affect 02 sensor because the cat isn’t ahead of it in the exhaust
