    I like that tank lift idea not only for the heat reduction, but I can get to my chrome heads and clean them easier.

      Will removing the right side heat shield by your leg, and keeping the left side on, produce the same results?

    • @lancek3387
      @lancek3387 2 года назад +1

      @@Evil_Empire42 no. You will be blowing more hot air behind your right leg, along with the already hotter right side air. Putting heat to heat only produces more heat.

    • @DKCustomProducts
      @DKCustomProducts  2 года назад +3

      @@Evil_Empire42 Similar, but not the same.
      There is more heat on the right side, so it will not feel as cool to the rider.
      Also there are more obstructions on the right, so the air will not flow around the rear cylinder and out as well with left in place and the right removed.

    If you wanna spend some money to cool your M8, and get some more power, a canned tune with FP3 cooled my bike significantly. I went in further and changed some of the AFR tables myself, dropping the highest AFR on the table from 14.41 down to 13.90, and changing closed loop AFR from 14.30 min/14.91 max, down to 14.10 max/13.80 min. Cooled my bike down even further.

    I totally agree with these tips and have done most of them. However, Pipe wrap? A friend wrapped the pipes on his Shovel and it did keep the heat in but the pipes got so hot that they basically disintegrated.

    • @DKCustomProducts
      @DKCustomProducts  День назад

      On the product page it says "DEI does NOT recommend wrapping exhausts made of titanium. The alloys used in the production of titanium exhaust systems tend to be thin and are designed to dissipate heat quickly. Wrapping any titanium exhaust pipe, regardless of brand, can hold in too much heat, and make the titanium alloy turn brittle and prone to premature cracking."
      If his exhaust was Titanium it is possible that was the issue. Kevin has had exhaust wrap on his Sportster exhaust for 10+ years and they have not rusted or gotten brittle.

    Just added the air deflector wings and a 1.5 inch tank lift to my 2015 FLHTKL and while I don't have historical data on the Temps in the short time I've noticed that I don't feel the heat like I have before. When I have felt heat off engine due to slow speed and changing direction it quickly disapaits when increasing speed and/or changing travel direction. So I highly recommend. Dk Customs has impressed me with their customer service as well as their products. Tank lift,Cooling defector wings and the 606 AC with Transformer EBS. Order wrong size Thunder Tourque Inserts and DK has gone above and beyond by sending correct size. Just can't beat their customer service.

    Here in Nevada I do just the opposite with the thigh wind deflectors,.Above 80 degrees I put them back on so my legs don't cook. I tried just taking the left hand side off and about roasted my leg above 80 degrees. The floorboard bump outs help out way more than some might think,that is a Great tip. Plus they are needed with cooling fans so my leg sits more level/straight.

    Good tips , #1 I removed both , they cook your legs in stop and go , #2 I used 1 1/2" flat straps in the front and a one inch tall socket in the rear , fuel gauge spot on and runs cooler , #5 I pulled the head pipe and drilled out with a butterfly .. Floorboards are done on the cheep to with pieces of pipe cut to 1" and used as a spacer and longer bolts , this is also a much more comfortable riding position .. external breathers are obvious .. I always wanted an Ultra for the lowers , my '88 Tour Glide was last year before the TGU , so never got one of those , as soon as the RGU hit the floor I got one , and 1) the vents would not stay open and 2) I hated them , they have been hanging in the shop since the second month I got this bike .. I have a set of Harley softs that are well over 35 years old , I use them if I need lowers

    Kevin, I wrapped my bassani header tonight, but now read some techs saying the heat trapped in the header by wrap has molten effect on some headers and that most vendors will not warranty headers that have been wrapped!! Thank you for your replies to all our questions, reason I wanted to wrap is hot hot right foot/ankle with just shields!

    • @DKCustomProducts
      @DKCustomProducts  2 года назад

      If wrap will make a molten effect on headers, it could be one, or both, of these two reasons:
      1. Engine is running too hot for it's own good (regardless of the wrap)
      2. Cheaply made exhaust. There are more and more knock-offs coming out of Asia, some with really poor quality
      It is understandable that an exhaust MFG. will not warranty wrapped headers. They have not control over whether the bike will be put up with wet wrap, time after time. Done enough, it can result in rust and eventual failure.

    I have done every mod to my 09 Ultra that can be done on the cheap.....tank lift, air deflector wings, left side air shield removal, factory air box modification (complete removal of any nonessential plastic), external breather mod....and this stuff WORKS!
    Alot less felt heat on me, and that means a much more efficiently cooled motor. I don't even feel the heat through the seat like I used to....that should say something about dissipating engine heat.

    removing either air deflector likely creates a blow torch for your 2-up rider's leg. Good idea on the floor board extensions...didn't think about that.
    In addition to their recommendations...IF you chip away at the engine temp to maintain your ride - spend some bucks for solid results: (1) Use a CLEAN air filter, (2) Use certified HIGH-PERF Oil, like Mobil 1 (API, SH, SG, CF certified), contrary to Harley full-syn 3 w/NO heat/viscosity certs, (3) Heads - install a cooling fan (although, it's a blow torch on the left leg, (4) Oil Cooling/engine cooling - install an oil cooler that's large enough and actually delivers results (Oil Bud system 30 degree drop in oil temp). Oil Bud was pricey, BUT, it made a big positive difference in the bike's performance over the summer in traffic and just plain summer heat.

      Everyone's experience is different, but ours is, with well over 150k miles of two up riding that there is no blow torch effect on the rider or passengers legs. That is probably a result of having the engine temp down to what HD Corporate says is the optimum temp of 230*F.

      @DKCustomProducts  Год назад +1

      Thank you for your kind words, and we appreciate your business. 👍
      If your oil is going up over 230 F, the oil cooler fan will help cool the oil when at a stop, and up to 30 mph. Above 30 mph the oil cooler fan provides no cooling effect.
      The rear fan, aka CoolFlow Fan, is to reduce heat radiating out to the rider and passengers, it does not provide any actual cooling to the engine, but it is effective at reducing felt heat when at a stop or going slowly.
      You did not mention, but the Cooling Deflector Wings will reduce actual engine temp by around 10 F when moving.

    How about the harley cool fan takes the heat from the rear cylinder and blows it down

    • @DKCustomProducts
      @DKCustomProducts  2 года назад

      Yes, that is sorta what they do...they take the hot air from around the rear cylinder and blow it down. They are good for reducing the heat radiating to the passengers legs. HD specifically states, and our testing shows it to be true, that the fan does not reduce the temperature of the rear cylinder at all. But they do make passenger comfort a bit better if they passenger is feeling warm.

I also have the Dakota gauges where I can monitor oil temp and head temp. The head temp at its hottest was 333 deg. while the oil temp was 175 deg. This was on a 75-80 day. What are your thoughts I'm not sure if I want to raise the tank. Thanks.

    • @DKCustomProducts
      @DKCustomProducts  Год назад

      Thanks for your business, we appreciate it.
      When you say the head temp at its hottest was 333 F. What was this measured with? The Power Vision ET gauge is what gets the direct temp read out from the embedded OEM heat sensor.
      There is a read out on the PV of Cylinder Head Temp, this is not an accurate reading of anything. It is a computed number that is not stable or reliable.
      I do know that the oil temp read out on the Dakota Digital has not been accurate the few times we have tested it. We have also had Customers report to us that it is not accurate.
      The way you can test your oil temp accuracy is to measure it at the dipstick hole...use a oven thermometer, and see if the reading is close to what the DD is giving you.
      Here is a video that I believe will be very useful in explaining the different readings the ECM uses- ruclips.net/video/0vbTkRvFa80/видео.html
      One other thing to note, it takes the oil far longer to heat up than the OEM heat sensor. To get an accurate reading, you will want to ride at a good clip (50 mph or more) for close to 45 minutes for the engine to fully warm up and get an accurate read of your fully warmed up oil.
      If, after riding for 45 minutes, you are able to verify that the oil (at the dipstick) is 200-230 F and that the heat sensor in the cylinder head is over 300 F, then you will know that your oil cooler is working very well, but that not enough air is getting to the engine to keep it down in the optimum temp range (which for your M8 is between 230-260 F), and that you will benefit from increased air flow to the engine.

    I need your help before I buy my next bike. I like the Street Glide and want to buy the ST model. When I do my research on them so many people comment on how bad the wind buffeting is and the best way is to install the fork fangs. But here on this video you say to remove them when the outside temp is 70 and over. Why don't you recommend to remove lowers too, would they also block air like the fork fangs? Can I leave them on and install a oil cooler fan to help things out and not get it too hot? I am in California and can not install any tuner to help out and the FL-ViED Fuel Enrichment for Harley EFI Plug-n-Play you sell are not available for the newer M8. When I ask others about the Street Glide buffeting some say to just get a Road Glide or to install the fork fangs. I would not be running lowers or the wind baffle, just the fangs. If the fork fangs and baffle raise the temp when hot outside by 20 degrees or so, will or can a oil cooler fan lower it back down 20 degrees or so with just the fangs? Will your cooling wings still work with the fangs installed to help things out? Thank You!!

    • @DKCustomProducts
      @DKCustomProducts  2 года назад

      Everybody experiences buffeting differently. So many variables:
      How tall
      Slouch or sitting up straight
      How tall are the handlebars
      Backrest or not
      Helmet
      Foot placement
      and much more.
      I would recommend riding a Street Glide and seeing if buffeting is even an issue for you.
      One of the biggest ways, for many who experience buffeting, to reduce it is to get a recurve windshield.
      Lowers do not block air flowing to the engine like the fangs do. Lower push air onto the engine in two ways.
      1. They are rounded, with the inside half directing air onto the engine
      2. They have vents that can be opened to direct air past the engine
      Say your engine is running at 270* and you put fangs on, that bumps it up to 290*, then you put an oil cooler on, that will drop oil temps by about 20* and engine temps by about 10*, so now your engine temp is 280*.
      Whereas, if you start at 270* and do an oil cooler (-10* ET), Cooling Deflector Wings (-10* ET), and tank lift (-10* ET), you are now down to 240* ET, a full 50* less than adding fangs, and 40* less than fangs and an oil cooler.
      Yes, CDW's will work in conjunction with fangs.
      A tank lift and cooling deflector wings do about 70% as much good at reducing buffeting (for those that experience it) as the fangs. BUT, the benefit of the CDW and Lift is that they also cool the engine.
      You can see a list of cooling components, including the CDW and Tank Lift at this link- www.dkcustomproducts.com/cooling-components-c661-191.htm

I would be installing fangs, replacing the stock oil cooler with the electric fan Harley version like the police bikes come with and doing the wing deflectors you have, would this be OK and reduce the heat enough or are the fangs as you say going to reduce so much wind even with your wind deflectors I should not run them?

    • @DKCustomProducts
      @DKCustomProducts  2 года назад

      @@ericjames7680 There are many things you can do to cool it down...even with the fangs. It is just that you are starting in the hole by 20* with the fangs.
      I would do a small tank lift, 1" or 1.5", and the Cooling Deflector Wings. They will still help, even with the fangs installed.

    Does adding a tank lift reduce your useable fuel in the tank

    • @DKCustomProducts

      Usable fuel capacity is not affected noticeably when lifting the tank, it is the superficial low fuel, like the low fuel light coming on too soon due to the new angle of the tank. You can also add the Deluxe Option to the rear to help off set that low fuel light coming on.

    Adding RVS to the oil should also help, as less heat would then be produced.

      @@DKCustomProducts When I added RVS to my 1982 BMW R100 engine (in good condition) I didn't feel more power, but temperature came down about 10C on the guage dipstick after 1000 km. But its difficult to notice because it happens so slowly. It did turn the oil black almost right away as it loosens all the dirt before oil change and adding the other half. I know its excellent for restoring compression on worn engines. The Finnish producer says people usually first notice less heat and smoother running. Maybe the best source of info are the TUV and Fraunhofer reports on the Finnish site.

      Depending on how you ride, most of the time it is better to cool the metal, so the oil never gets as hot, than to let the metal get hotter and then have to cool the oil after the effect.

    Now when she does ride said she feels like she is on a birthing table on the Dyna

    Do you have any suggestions for a more comfortable foot peg location as compared to the stock foot pegs

      Something like the Triple trap, Bear Trap or Primo pegs might be a bit more comfortable than pegs.
      Then, if you add heel rests to either of those above, that will give even more foot positions.
      Then for a more refined look, but, still with almost as many different positions are these-
      www.dkcustomproducts.com/fatty-chrome-iso-footpegs-rubber-cushioned-w-heel-rest-dk-ky-iso-c-hr-f.htm
      She might also be more comfortable if the ride is not so rough, anywhere from the Bitubo's up to the NexGens.

    The best low cost way of cooling down your Harley is#1 don’t ride in Texas summers.
    #2) Ride north as far north as you can in the summer, or move North for the summer and move back in winter!
    #3) buy a Honda because it’s liquid cooled and still ride North.
    #4) put skis on your Harley and turn into a personal watercraft!
    #5) sale it buy something that’s not woke! I personally like number 4 but I’ve got a 2001 prewoke Harley so #4 does not apply to me or anyone with a prewoke model!

    Ok, I thinking about adding one Mid frame shield/scoop , but for the mid-frame shields, looking it over, I'm going to have to ask as a matter of engine cooling only (not rider comfort issue considered): Don't you think removing only the right side (rather than the left) would better serve? The left side shield is farther from the cylinder head and partly due to being out from the cylinder and not having a large airfilter box in front of it, its likely can scoop more air due to this, and by removing the Much-closer to the cylinder, right side shield.. I wondering,, wouldn't esp at no or slow movement traffic, that the heat could escape easier as opposed to the left side (since the cylinder is tucked farther under the tank)?

    • @DKCustomProducts
      @DKCustomProducts  2 года назад

      We recommend having the right side deflector in place and no deflector on the left for the following reasons.
      1. There is more heat on the right, so having the scoop there also shields the rider and passenger from some of that heat.
      2. The air flows much smoother from right to left, than left to right. So by leaving it on the right, it will result in more and faster flow of air past the rear cylinder.
      3. If at any point you decide to add cooling fans, then #2 above is even more significant
      This has been our experience, both in real life testing and with a fan and smoke pen. We did not video that, so we may do that experiment again with the smoke pen & video it this time.

      They definitely work. All our testing shows that the Jagg oil coolers are more effective, and they have a better warranty also. You can see them at this link- www.dkcustomproducts.com/oil-coolers-c134.htm
      That said, the ultra cool will perform better than the OEM. Depending on what bike you have, the UC may want you to cut your lower fairing for install. I would NOT do that.

      Not sure if you realize, the Twin Cooled is only liquid cooled around the exhaust valves. No other part of the engine is liquid cooled. They actually run hotter than the non Twin Cooled bikes for a couple of reasons. We did a video on it that is linked below.
      Also, Harley specifically states the the EITMS is only for rider and passenger comfort when stopped, that it does not do anything to make the engine actually run cooler.

      Yeah, it is a catch-22 with the factory air cleaner. The best thing is to use a true performance air cleaner (see video link below).
      But if one is using the stock air cleaner, having the holes in the plastic backplate will help it run better/cooler, even though the holes are near the engine, they will help the intake air be cooler, whenever the bike is moving.
