Coincidentally, Rob Zombie actually worked on Pee-wee's Playhouse. And that should tell you everything you need to know about his sensibilities regarding what is "family-friendly." 😱
I enjoyed it. It was colorful and campy and weird, which I’m a sucker for. However, it reminded me of the Flintstones movie from the 90s. Like it’s dressed as a kids movie, but I feel like the people making it have never actually interacted with a child.
I would like to point out that it was addressed this summer, the movie wasn't dumped onto Netflix, it was apparently always an Netflix production. That doesn't excuse anything and I'm terrified at the prospect of having to watch this with my partner soon. Just wanted to address that one little dig.
When I heard Rob Zombie was doing this movie, my initial thought was "interesting choice, but would it work". When the first pictures came out from the production, my thought then was "hmmm, maybe this could work". Then the first trailer came out, and my thought was "This can't be a real trailer, it literally looks like a fan produced piece filmed using an iPhone and using $20 worth of make-up from Spirit Halloween". Then I found out the trailer was real, and my final thought was "This is going to be the most epic train wreak of 2022", and this review doesn't prove me wrong.
My only favorite cinematic projects by Rob Zombie, even though I love him more as a musician, is the Firefly trilogy, and “The Devil’s Rejects” (2005) is my favorite out of all of the three.
Holy shit, what a hilariously brutal review! I've seen you roast quite a few clankers, but I've never belly laughed so many times as I did with this one. Thank you for taking the bullets for us once again Jeremy, sparing us the pain and suffering you endure time after time so selflessly. You're the hero we never knew we needed.
As an absolute fan of The Munsters myself I came away with enough to say, "Only watch it IF you are an absolute fan of the OG source material." The casting felt very on point, with the man playing Grandpa giving what I thought to be the most faithful of performances, but even the guy playing Herman and miss zombie herself also gave decent performances. I enjoyed how nostalgic it felt, even if that nostalgia felt more like budgetary constraints a lot of the times. And much like you said, this was simply far too long. By the end of those two hours even what little charm the film possess had worn off and you just feel... Tired. I don't think it's AWFUL. But I also can't say it's good. It's aggressively mediocre and I found my laughs were far and in-between, with Herman's endearing puns being the only extreme standouts, because he's just so damn likable as a protagonist, with a lot of infectious, bubbly energy.
I hate to admit that Jeff Daniel Phillips tried a bit, sometimes. Not enough. In the first few minutes he was on screen, I could hear some similarities in the voice but he gave up so often. Granted, it didn't have to be exact but lord have mercy. I think there's a lot of dedicated men who could have done better. There's got to be somebody out there that could have done it other than Phillips. Maybe everything could have been a little bit more tolerable with a better script or a miracle. Props to Daniel Roebuck (new Grandpa), though for being passionate.
Didn't watch it. Saw the trailer, knew it wouldn't be good but was absolutely waiting for videos on it. Glad we got yours! Entertaining and enlightening as always. 👍
Jeremy must only sleep like 4-5 hours a night that he can go to bed at midnight, wake up, watch 55 minutes of Rob Zombie, get prepped and film a video (which you know wasn’t done in one take) edit it, and upload it to RUclips. And it’s still early in the morning. Dude needs to take better care of his health and go to bed sooner
Honestly, I liked it. Rob Zombie had a vision and he gave it all to us. This was not curated, nor formulaic to just generate money. This was a vision and original. Things we audience all complain about not having in todays movies. So I appreciate Zombie giving us something original and different. As to whether you like t or not that’s up to you.
@@cecilyboley9869 I am aware. By original, I'm referring to it's production. It is very different in it's storytelling, visual style, and acting. This could have easily been a run of the mill cookie cutter exploitation on nostalgia. But Zombie went in a whole different and original direction.
I literally am still going to watch this movie regardless. The Munsters was always prettier than it was actually funny, unlike Addams Family, so I'm just going to attempt to enjoy it. lol. The sets are beautiful.
J.J. - The reason the people were out partying in costume in the street was because it was Halloween night, don't see how you missed that. That's why Cassandra was in a costume, they said it right in the movie.
I honestly can't be bothered with watching any remake, prequel, sequel, reimagining, reboot, re-whatever anymore unless I hear enough good things about it (which is why I'm going to give House of the Dragon a go, despite initially not being excited about it, and why I still can't be bothered to watch Rings of Power).
Agreed. And at this point, unless it's Nolan, Bong Joon Ho, PTA, Scorsese, Villeneuve, Von Trier, Tarantino, or Spielberg (once in a while), that's all that Hollywood is willing to greenlight anymore. Mostly nothing but crap.
House of the Dragon is awesome but you gotta remember, it focuses on 1 family whereas Game of Thrones was all over the world with a lot going on in between. Some people were expecting it to be 100% like Game of Thrones, when it’s not.
Saw it but decided against it until I could find somebody who would post or tweet about it. Clicked on the link as soon as I saw your thumbnail. Thanks for taking one for the team Jeremy !
Yeah don’t do that. It doesn’t work as a so bad it’s good movie. It’s actually trying to be funny and failing. There is one joke in the entire 110 minute movie that works (the Shirley Temple joke) and they proceed to run it into the ground for the next 3 minutes then like the rest of the bad jokes in the movie.
Like Fred Gwynne (Mr. Crandall) said: “Sometimes, dead is better!” The original Monsters was never campy. The 1966 Batman series was campy. But to each their own… I'm just too much of a die-hard fan of the original show.🖤
Great review J.J. The best and only good thing to be said about this movie, is it kept people employed . But they shouldn’t list the job on their next resume.
I love how everyone is suspecting this movie of foul play like either Rob Zombie took all the money to give to his movie friends, that it was made to launder money or it was made as a tax write off hahaha it's really so bad and low effort that it begs the question
I've never been a fan of the Munsters, but honestly I loved this movie. It was just sweet and cute to me, and I could tell Rob Zombie clearly loved the property he was working on
The thing is, this movie should be good to those who were fans, as that's who it was made for. If it's only good to those who didn't like the far superior original, it did something wrong.
@@natebalcerak1659 Yeah i am starting to think these 'movie reviewers' are just narcissistic creeps trying to tell us how to think. I enjoyed the movie. Hi Jeremy! First time Commentator longtime Subscriber (around the time you were speculating The Dark Knight Rises). Thank you again for providing reviews and giving your honest recommendations. I thought maybe I'd recommend something your way in return. Recently I played an FMV videogame called Immortality, which was released in August on GamePass. Knowing how much you enjoyed Night Trap I'm wondering if this game was on your radar. The game isn't very long, the performances feel engaging, the story is a bit convoluted yet intriguing, and it does take a bit of patience to play. Regardless it does interest me with what the FMV genre could become. It would be appreciative to know what your take is on this game, but I understand that you have other things to play, watch, and review and that this game isn't trending enough to boost anyone's RUclips presence. Regardless, maybe you get a gaming experience out of it. Thanks again and hopefully you get the rest you need... DHD
I loved this movie. I thought the tone matched the original Munsters television show perfectly. I thought Sherrie Moon Zombie was pitch perfect for Lily. Also, the random character who has more than a passing resemblance to Vincent Price made me think Rob Zombie wrote it for Vincent Price. So, I guess the movie was made for me? Anyway, guilty pleasure viewing for sure.
And with trailer trash characters and f-bombs. Not like those are bad to have in a movie but Zombie clearly does not know how to WRITE a movie. But his directing is great!
I watched it out of the same morbid curiosity mentioned in this review. Everything Jeremy says here is accurate and the "right" response to this movie. And maybe I have a little brain damage or something, but once I acclimated to the camp, the bad acting and timing, and the over the top lighting, I started to appreciate it in exactly the same was as the original TV show, which is to say that I found myself mildly appreciating it while feeling totally uninvested in it. It was just kind of on while I thought about other things, checked my phone, but stayed mildly interested to see where the movie went while I did other things. And in that sense, it was interesting wallpaper. I'd be pissed if I paid for it though.
Started watching Munsters today, and I gotta say I'm loving it. Quirky, campy, charming, and fun. I love the lighting it's very over the top and overly dramatic. This movie is wonderful.
Absolute worst movie I've ever watched. Not a campy, cheesy kinda movie, but a "what the fuck?!" kinda movie. It's like it was edited by blind, deaf, and dumb ppl...but doing multiple movies at once. You'll have to overdose on some dumb-dumb pills and about 27 hits of acid.
Hmmm... I absolutely adored and grew up watching The Munsters and The Addams Family. I always wanted to be part of those families since my own family was nonexistent. I once tried showing these shows to my girlfriend (who's in her late 30's) and she just did not get it. It proved to me that this new society of millennials just does not get the older era of television and film. Your review was nearly identical to what I expected. Proof that the good old days of entertainment just would not be valued or appreciated in today's world. Sad...
Well I liked it. Sheri as Lily was great, The Count was the funniest. Yeah it wont win an Oscar but I enjoyed my time with it. I love the use of color in it
Imagine how much cooler this could be if it was done as a legitimate horror film where they are psychopathic murderers, but act like they do in the classic show….
Still working through it, might be alone in this but actually liking it so far. For what he was going for, there is much worse. I actually laughed, which is better than alot of crap out there
Speaking as someone who hasn't seen this movie but has seen the original show many times growing up, I would have rather seen an Animated "The Munsters" movie like how they did "The Addams Family" -- but with better comedy and animation quality. I respect and appreciate the effort taken on by Rob Zombie and the cast and crew who made this movie. They took tons of risks and interesting production choices in making this as it is. That same grace does not save it from looking like an adaptation that-- and again, I have not seen the movie -- just feels like it fell short of the original show. I wasn't clamoring to see it before I saw this review, but now I might put it on a "Give-It-A-Chance" Watchlist, alongside the likes of the recent "Mummy" movie and "Black Widow". I love the show, and I would like to see a movie adaptation of it. Just more animated.
The trailer told you everything you needed to know about that movie. Absolute garbage. Its a shame...Rob Zombie has some talent, but this absolutely feels like a movie he made to launder money or something. 😅
i thought it was good because it did not try to copy the original..showed the start of what the series was..lots of questions i had when i was younger...hope Rob does part 2
Rob Zombie was completely denied doing this in Black and White by the studio. So he went in the opposite direction with the color scheme. To me, this goes perfectly with the whole original Munster shtick, which he nailed. Comedy has changed dramatically since the 60's. But he stuck to his guns and kept the same cheesy, campy feel as the original sitcom. Not a perfect movie but it brings me back to my childhood watching the reruns.
Don’t think I’ve ever laughed harder at a movie than when I saw Freddy Got Fingered in theater. It was made even funnier though because besides me and my friend, the rest of the audience was silently confused and horrified. 😂
So I own this on Bluray...yea I preordered it (Being a completionist, I own all RZ movies)... my initial thoughts were this is a cool setting, colors, lighting, etc. Then Jeff Daniel Phillips spoke, and I went OMG nails on chalkboard...why!!! Also agree I like Sheri Moon Zombie more for eye candy, but she is not an actress! set aside the comedy portion, she is not an actress!! Grandpa played by Daniel Roebuck was probably the only redeeming factor in the film as his role was done perfectly! RZ should not make PG material, because even this bored my kids (7 and almost 10 years old), go full gusto and do an adult Munsters movie the RZ way. The ending really just made me want a sequel to see more story as there was not much going on in the movie itself, it was like a set up for another movie haha, especially with the ending feeling abrupt. But yes Jeremy your review was awesome, and usually I tend to disagree sometimes, but this was spot on.
I actually really enjoyed it. It was extremely campy and fucking cheesey as hell which is everything I wanted out of a Munsters movie. It was a clear love letter to 1960s filmmaking and I loved every second of it.
Now I wish he did go with a horror take on The Munsters, in an alternate universe we got House of 1000 Corpses but with the Munster family, Herman killing someone and stomping and laughing, Grampa being the Otis character doing insane experiments, marilyn being the tied-up cheerleader... it writes itself really, make it funny instead of scary, keep the Munsters charm but make it gory and brutal.
This film is a reminder that just because you're very passionate about something, dosen't mean you would be good at that thing.

It was too much for your 8 year old? Really?

The most spot on fact for fact review I've seen yet.
Though I did have a comic artist friend say "it did for The Munsters what Scrappy did for Scooby Doo".

Sorta. This was supposed to be a theatrical release. Then it was a Peacock exclusive. Then, not even NBC-Universal wanted their name on it so they sold it to Netflix

It was a spot on match of the sitcom once i turned off my adult brain that tried to think the Munsters were serious and really remembered them and how they viewed the world around them. If you
I highly enjoy Rob Zombie’s horror movies, and I love The Munsters show, and I wanted to like this movie, but uh.. nah. I did like how bright and colorful it looked (even if it should have been in black & white), and I liked the sets and costumes. It all look like a fun Halloween special you would see on Disney channel as a kid. Or like the Halloweentown movies.

And that should tell you everything you need to know about his sensibilities regarding what is "family-friendly." 😱
Being Rob Zombie I guess exposing yourself in a movie theater after doing coke seems like family friendly comedy gold.
I appreciate Jeremy suffering through this movie in order to give us a honest review.
*wreck not *wreak
I feel your pain Jeremy… I feel it.

Loved this movie, not sure what people expected, but it was spot on!

Rob Zombie wanted to make the movie in black and white but the studio wouldn’t fund if he went that route. So he made it with ridiculously colorful.
Funniest thing about it is it probably would've been 1000x better had he done it that way
😆 Jeremy is so brave. Yay we heard Gypsy and Danger bark.

It’s not original… it’s a prequel to a tv series from 60 years ago
@@cecilyboley9869 I am aware. By original, I'm referring to it's production. It is very different in it's storytelling, visual style, and acting. This could have easily been a run of the mill cookie cutter exploitation on nostalgia. But Zombie went in a whole different and original direction.

You're a smart man my friend, I learned the same lesson when the Disney Star Wars movies came out

Rob Zombie left a lot of jokes on the table by exluding Eddie and Marilyn Munster.
They had Marilyn's future Father in it in the 60's show she was Lily's sister daughter
They saved a lot in makeup and prosthetics by deleting Marilyn
I’m really confused that he decided to basically use the same plot as The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas instead of just remaking the show as is.

It feels like Rob Zombie can now only redeem himself by making an actual Munsters horror film, with gore, blood, & death.
And with trailer trash characters and f-bombs. Not like those are bad to have in a movie but Zombie clearly does not know how to WRITE a movie. But his directing is great!
I can't imagine at kids nowadays even knowing who the Musters are. I was a little kid in the 80's and I bearly remember watching reruns back then.

It was very low budget made for netflix. That runor of the 40 million budget was false. It wasnt even a third of that
Thank you for watching this! Since I'm a huge fan of Rob Zombie, I want to watch his stuff, but that trailer was soooo bad...
Watched 40 minutes, thought it was at least an hour. Could not watch anymore. I commend you for watching the whole thing, you brave soul.
Started watching Munsters today, and I gotta say I'm loving it. Quirky, campy, charming, and fun. I love the lighting it's very over the top and overly dramatic. This movie is wonderful.
Yea a lot of people are being dumb. Movie was great. Their loss. Same with this tool.
Watched Brad Jones's review yesterday. There could not be two more differing opinions on this movie! I love the dichotomy...
Nah
Jeremy when are you gonna drop your review for season 5 of cobra Kai? I’m really looking forward to hearing your thoughts on it!
I can't wait for your thoughts on Andor. It has a good thriller feel.
