The Addams Family in the early 90s have live up to the 1960s show, and it turns out to be a box office hit without the original cast. This movie looks horrendously god-awful and cheap.
It's possible, but you need GREAT actors and a GOOD script. We said the same about the addams family tv show. Then the 90's happened and the first 2 films were amazing.
Tbh I kinda thought it was sad "this movie is shit but we can't do anything about it" with a dash of contempt like maybe he bit off more then he could chew and reflected on his poor choices 😂
Rob Zombie could do a remake of Lord of the Flies and still find a way to get Sheri centre stage. Not saying she's bad but we're at the stage now where I want to see other actors tackle his gritty grindhouse style of cinema.

FUN FACT: Rob Zombie snuck in a couple of original cast members of the 60's t.v. Munsters series,....however, they were hidden. The woman's voice making the announcement over the airport P.A. system was performed by Patti Priest, who was Marilyn Munster. The robot was actor Butch Patrick.
There were times where it felt like I was watching a commercial for a local furniture store, or a car dealership. I kept expecting Herman or Lily to look at the camera and say "No credit check required..." In a spooky voice

The sad part is that Rob Zombie limits himself/his material by always casting his wife. Sherri Moon Zombie is beautiful but cannot act. Imagine what he could achieve with the right actors.
Might limit the films, but I can't find hate for negotiating a role for one's partner as part of the gig. It would be pretty good to have a partner with enough leverage to negotiate a job for me too during the next round of contract talks.
I agree, Tim Burton with his Johnny Depp addiction was tolerable ONLY because JD is such a charasmatic actor with a lot of range. I think Sheri Moon is fine as a crazy lady in a horror setting but her acting in this was just bad and came off as too much, even for this sort of role
I think the biggest problem with Rob Zombie's movies is the lack of a co-writer, someone who can help flesh out Rob's ideas and bring cohesion to them. As we've seen time and time again from Rob, it's one thing to love a genre, it's another thing to be able to tell a good story with good characters.
True. Reminds me of Harold Ramis coming in and helping Dan Aykroyd rewrite the entire Ghostbusters script. If it hadn't been for Ramis, Ghostbusters would have never happened or we would have gotten a movie with absolutely nothing to keep it focused and glued in place. Dan can be a great writer when he has somebody to bounce ideas off of and keep him centered. Just look at Dan's movie Nothing But Trouble that he wrote and directed and you can see what I mean. That movie could have been something special had Dan had a cohort he could trust to help him make it special.

Absolutely. I was literally going to comment just to point that out. Coulda been because Sherri was trying to flatter Cassandra, who was actually in the movie as the realtor, or also coulda been because Elvira is the closest Sherri ever got to watching the Munsters.
Interesting thing I only found out now. Al Lewis was only in his early 40s on the Munsters and only 3 years older than Fred Gwynne. And Yvonne De Carlo was actually older than both of them. All three actors in this prequel are older than they were.

The clip at 4:36 breaks my heart when compared to the Rob Zombie clip of him saying “It’s not going to get any better.” It’s heart breaking to see someone who’s just excited to be on set v.s someone who’s tired of the movie-making process.

It feels like Rob Zombie liked the aesthetics and the concept of the Munsters far more than the show itself. Him lovingly recreating their home while completely failing to get the dynamics of the family in the writing reeks of a guy who simply sees the property as a chance for his friends to cosplay rather than effectively pay homage to.

Fred Gwynne was such a unique talent: a natural charisma, gentleness, vulnerability and likability. And good humor! This Herman Munster has zero of the aforementioned qualities. That's as kind as I can put it. Abysmal performance. Seriously, Razzie worthy.

It turns out that Ed Wood was (in)famous for getting his movie scenes 'in the can' in only one take. Didn't matter if the take was any good or not. He went with one take and moved on to the next scene. Now, if you didn't know better, you'd swear that Rob Zombie was following Wood's playbook to the letter. If you didn't know better. :D
@@tylersimmons4287 Two things can be true at the same time. The Devil's Rejects was a fluke. Rob Zombie's directing isn't what made that film great, it was the performances of the actors that did all the heavy lifting. Zombie is still a garbage director.
Imagine being on the set during the Sonny/Cher parody -- Rob looking around to see if people are laughing -- eyes darting around, unsure of how to react.
They completely lost me at that point with that tired TV trope. I'm sure I saw that one on "The Golden Girls" , "Married with Children" and "Will and Grace". Dreadful!

Every time I saw Sheri Moon Zombie in a scene her trying to play the character just came across as a stage performance of an elementary school student. I heard that Zombie only took the directors chair so his leading lady could play the character. Probably the worst way to do casting in history of movies
She is basically in almost all his movies, he makes movies just to cast his wife. Just like Ben Falcone casts his wife, Melissa McCarthy in every movie he makes.
Personally I think she was one of the best characters in House of 1k corpses..and the next two. Different script diff genre. Seems like a lot of issues like he describes trying to film a passion project. Why blame her.
So he loves his wife. So what? Tim Burton used Helena Bonham Carter and Johny Depp in several of his movies and it worked out fine for the most part. Mrs. Zombie never broke the movie for me and its a shame people give her flack for doing passion projects with her husband.
We all just sat down to give this a spin. My mom is a massive Adam’s family and munsters fan. She got up to do laundry during the first song bit. She immediately said she appreciated someone cared enough to try to reboot it but that this was terrible. I gave it an honest try and I called it quits not long after the beach scene. It’s sad because you can tell the set designers busted ass and roebuck put on a show but it just flat out sucked.
I really love your videos. Genuine critiques without being mean spirited or "old man yells at cloud" with regards to modern updates. I was never a real fan of the original but it did have heart and felt like real (as far as a monster family goes) characters....this update feels like a cosplay sketch done in someone's home. I think Rob Z has shown us that loving the material isnt enough when it comes to re-creating it.
What they should have done for the Mockingbird Lane scene is have Herman & Lily standing out front admiring the home and one of their neighbors come uo behind them to welcome them, and as soon as they turned around the neighbor would become terrified and run, and herman making an off joke about how he must have smelled bad or something like that.
Or they could’ve even gone a bit artistic and done some comedic stunts by doing a tracking shot of Herman just casually walking around his new street trying to get his bearings and figure everything out only for everyone in his path to comedically avoid or escape him in the background whilst Herman’s just oblivious
Great review. This review is far more entertaining than the movie. I have NO IDEA what Rob Zombie was thinking. As a huge fan of the original series , I was pretty horrified what they did with Herman and Lilly. It’s like-has either of these two people ever seen an episode of the original.
You know, it bothers me maybe more than it should that Herman is so mobile and animated. An underrated aspect of Fred Gwynne was how he played it physically and it just is distracting and misguided to have Herman be so bendy and non-monster.
Looking at footage of Gwynne it really seems like the makeup is what helped make the character along with his performance. The dark shadows on his face allowed for his eyes to pop letting that kindness and pure pleasantness Herman has to really be shown, that along with how cumbersome his costume and the bulk they had to add made him move like a monster but have the heart and soul of a gentleman In this the eye makeup just serves to make Herman look like a complete dolt because it eventuates the dumb look in his eyes and the costume isn’t cumbersome enough so the actor is just pretending he’s heavy making his lumbering movements seem fake and forced. Herman could’ve really done with the Stan & Ollie method they used for John C Riley where he had weights around his groin so he could move like an overweight person of Oliver Hardy’s girth

I felt like the end kind of came closer to what everyone knows, Did anyone else find it strange that grandpa was suddenly excited to be included in their leaving to hollywood. He lost his integrity of being in unaccepting of Herman. His potion husband for lily was perfectly grandpa Munster backfire
Regarding your point about finding someone comparable to Fred Gwynne, the only person I could think of that could match him would be Brad Garrett. He's got the stature and voice for Herman Munster.
'It's not gonna get any better' is one of the greatest out of context quotes I've ever heard I can only think of Miyazaki talking about how Otaku disgust him as a comparison, but that isn't out of context.
I think this would be an amazing Halloween movie, if it was about an hour shorter. The plot is non existent but I honestly kind of love it's weird Halloween Store aesthetic.
The idea of the Frankenstein monster getting the wrong brain didn't originate with Young Frankenstein. It was in the original 1931 Frankenstein when the assistant breaks the jar with the correct brain and replaces it with one literally labeled "abnormal." Young Frankenstein just made it more comedic.
Just as a bit of trivia, 1931 film was actually the second time Mary Shelley's novel was brought on screen. The first movie was shot in 1910. Neither the novel nor the 1910 version use the "wrong brain" idea.
@@ianfinrir8724 It does say the Monster was created from remains of the dead. To quote the doctor himself: "The dissecting room and the slaughter-house furnished many of my materials". It doesn't mention anything about a brain - or any other error in the "preparatory stage" for that matter. This was an addition by the creators of 1931 film. An addition that ruined Shelley's message on prejudice and responsibility for others, I must add. The literary Monster wasn't created evil, his thirst for revenge grew from being shunned by both his Creator and human society. The novel is a morality play: Frankenstein's creation failed because of his own failings. Perhaps the filmmakers didn't trust themselves to convincingly portray such subtleties or didn't trust the viewers to accept a movie monster having this kind of psychological depth - so they dumbed everything down to a label on a jar.
I've been waiting for this review. . . I hated the movie, but I so appreciate that you took the time to review it honestly and articulately. You gave props where props were due, provided great context to production and didn't just trash the movie, but examined it for all it's merit.
Haven't seen this, probably won't, but will never miss a hats off video. I really like the way he puts these together, and the niche media he covers is right up my alley. Almost a casual documentary... keep it up, man !
I'm still not convinced someone walked in on Rob and Sheri doing some Munsters kinky roleplay and to save face he was just examining that she was just dressing up as Lilly for a new Munsters movie he was writing.
Sheri doing a Lily cosplay strip show would have actually played into her strengths. And I honestly don't mean that as a slight. She got her start as a dancer, choreographer, and costume designer with Rob when he went solo. She's also never seemed shy about her body or embracing her sex appeal. Like when she posed nude for the cover of American Made Music to Strip By. Finally, she pulled off a similar enough look in the video for "Living Dead Girl" that I could see it working. The problem is that it while would be a great burlesque act that's totally different from starring in a film.

I just recently watched an episode of the original just for the nostalgia, wondering if it was just the rose-tinted glasses of my childhood making me believe they were funny. But it was indeed funny. Even in the Latin-American dub (because everything came to us dubbed back then) the jokes hit the mark and it never feels forced or too silly, it just puts a smile to your face.
One of the funniest was when Lily thought Herman was cheating on her, so she had a detective agency follow him around. Turns out, Herman joined this agency and was tasked with following himself around.
Is amazing how many latam dubs manage to keep and at times improve over the source material. The actors for the dub managed to keep a lot of tje inflextions and nuacens of the show
@@Hecatom that's because most of the people who dubbed in Mexico back in the day were stage and TV performers, since dubbing was a fairly recent trade at the time, so they relied a lot on professional actresses and actors that had to improvise using their knowledge and skills to get the job done.
It feels like a lot of this is inspired by an idealized self-image of Rob and Sheri's relationship. He sees himself as the shy, misfit monster who attracts this gorgeous woman and they're just instantly in love. Which fits with what I've heard about their relationship. Hence the time of Herman being a rock star. It's not in there to make sense or suit the plot but because it matches his personal history.
I hadn't thought of it but that makes way too much sense. I actually would love to see a romantic comedy or drama with a Rob Zombie-type lead... as long as someone else writes it.
Fun fact: The original Munsters were filmed in color, but was broadcast in black and white because it was cheaper. Plus it was at a time when most people had only black and white sets.
One issue is that Sheri Moon Zombie is a true negative void of talent that's brought down every film her husband's ever made in direct proportion to her prominence therein. She literally could not be a working actress without his constant intervention.

Heck, James Gunn cast his own wife in "Peacemaker", yet he gets away with it only because people like the show. Whereas here, most people hated this movie, so the fact that Zombie cast his own wife makes it seem that way. I can legit guarantee you that if this movie had been better received, then nobody would care about Zombie's wife being Lilly in this film.

I thought maybe this would be good, since Rob Zombie finally got a chance to make a movie about a family of monsters who are really just misunderstood and not bad people really. He seemed to be trying to do that with the second films in his Halloween and Firefly series, but the monsters in those movies are actually monstrous.
I was addicted to the Munsters as a kid. I was born a goth at heart. When I heard about a remake I was both excited and nervous because the show was such a hinkie hit. The character portrayals were so iconic I knew it would be difficult to even come close to the exact recipe. I tried so hard to watch the remake but within the first 2 minutes I was over it. I was so disappointed that I couldn't recognize ANY of the characters at all. I was even almost bitter about it. I went about telling anyone who hadn't seen it NOT to see it. In my personal opinion it's a travesty. A mockery. A cheap and abusive take on a classic beloved by so many. IF it should be done again, I would love to see it in the hands of Tim Burton. He's probably the only one capable of bringing such an oddity back to life. If I had money to spare, I'd be investing in that all the way. Cheers to effort Rob. You came, you played, you lost. Next time maybe, but not with my Munsters.

Also, Ed Wood looked out for his friends as well, but people remember his movies more because they were enjoyably bad (being on MST3K and Rifftrax helps): Plan 9 from Outer Space, The Violent Years, The Sinister Urge, Bride of the Monster
Zombie is no Tim Burton, nor is he Joss Whedon or JJ Abrams…it’s possible to cast friends and have a stellar movie, they just have to be good fits in the role

Maybe 1000 Corpses is decent, but only decent. Its pretty much Texas Chainsaw without Leatherface...and if you've been drinking, Devils Rejects. 3 from Hell isn't even mentionable...that one was totally forgettable.

There was a line in the film that summed up my thoughts exactly. When The Count sees Herman on TV doing his shtick, he says "I can feel my brain cells dying." That was my experience. Look I like a good movie based on a TV show. I LOVE The Brady Bunch movies (well first two) and Addams Family (first 2 again). Even Get Smart was done well. This was painful. Only two times did i come close to a laugh. The end of the vampires dance when the confetti popped. And the sign on the fence reading "We are tired of hiding the bodies". Both of them were barely smiles.
Also I think the editing and pacing absolutely kills this movie from start to finish, what made the Munsters so good was how it stuck mostly to the family dynamic and how the characters worked off of each other in every scene. I think had it stuck to the classic formula of the series and just relied on the performances of the characters as well as telling a more cleverly written story and cut out the rest of the cast that serves no purpose, this could’ve been so much better even from a studio like 1440. Less is more, and the Munsters wasn’t a high budget show , and yet it’s remembered as a classic.
About scoring that technicolor look on digital: Ti West NAILED IT with Pearl. I totally thought it was shot on film before I looked it up. Fantastic work in post on that movie!
At this point he's hit a Grand Slam, I mean the Munsters already had a blueprint and he still fkd it up... on the other hand this disasterpiece makes his other projects look descent.

I thought it was fine. The worst thing they could've done is through social commentary thoughout the entire movie.... which is what they did with "Wednesday ", did you like that one? I believe, if youre going to make a movie of an entire TV series, then this is what you would do... you dont have the original actors of the TV show, i mean, they were good, but it was very campy. Not looking for a masterpiece, but i thought, for a quick taste, it was fine... glad it wasnt a series

It took too long to introduce Herman, and it too long for them to get to the house (which indeed looked wonderful!). A lot of the story could have been jettisoned. The performances may not have been as grating with a better script.
I think Zombie as a director works best when he's allowed to do his own thing outside of any constraints. That's why I liked Devil's rejects, Parts of his Halloween and hated pretty much a lot of other stuff. I feel like the problem with this is that as a fan of The Munsters, he's shackling himself into doing something faithful as opposed to his own thing
Thing is Munsters especially in the modern age could work really well, it’s a timeless idea when you think about it as the joke of “monsters living a normal suburban lifestyle and not realising they’re terrifying everyone around them” can work no matter what decade it’s in. Hell Rob could’ve still gone dark but kept it true to the original, like imagine a Herman that looks actually like a bunch of corpse parts sewn together but keep the personality the same, making Herman more horrible and House Of 1000 Corpses looking but keeping him the same oblivious dope would actually work for the joke
I tuned out so many times when watching it. The only time it pulled me in was the visuals, the sets, and the looks at times. For how the date with Nosferatu as Lily comes in was great. I also like the stylish look when they zoom in and show hearts, confusion, or something. I thought that was really cool and loved the vibe it gave but the movie plot and story made me feel like a chore to watch it. I felt like I watched 3 or 4 different movies at once. Like, What did I just watch exactly? One moment, you have Lilly wanting to fall in love with the right guy. Then the next, they get married, but the pacing is everywhere as now it is Herman vs. the dad, but then you have them being broke and having no house. Then you have them in Hollywood wanting jobs but then it was the neighbors being unreal. It was everywhere. oh and do not get me the confusing time setting and time era it is place. WHEN does this takes place? early 19th century or 50's? I felt so lost and confuse on the time era they were in, all I got is that they have electricity and industrial music and goth dark wave music.
I guess in places that were shut down from a minor virus, 2020 was worse. For people who were free the whole time, 2022 is the same, but Biden fucked everything up for 2 years like he promised.

I enjoyed the parts with just the scientist and his hunchbacked assistant, they captured the madcap nonsense of something like the Munsters better than any parts that featured the Munster characters lol
I never watched The Munsters, but just watching this review, I can tell the original Herman was something special l. His performance is excellent, and even when I can see a joke coming, I’m still pleased with the his deivery
Fred Gwynne had a fabulous warmth about him. I actually loved his performance in the reruns so much that Herman was my imaginary friend as a child. 😄 Edward Herman definitely came the closest to replicating that magic.
Gwynne just screams loving husband and father in those clips he used. Issue is most actors who play Herman seem to play up the idiot aspect instead of the loving family man aspect
The movie had four or five directors before Rob Zombie. He was brought in to save the project. Usually multiple directors indicates there is a problem with the film.
Fred Gwynne and Al Lewis were in dozens of shows together back when networks were going through shows like lawsuits. Their chemistry is impossible to replicate today.

Early on in the movie he complained about his back hurting and I joked, "it's probably because he carried the entire movie." I had a hard time even finishing the movie. The first time I made it through about an hour and I had to turn it off. Everyone I know that watched it could barely make it through the first 30 minutes. The character of Herman was abysmal. Absolutely annoying throughout the entire film. I like Sheri Moon, but her "performance" was awkward and didn't make any sense. Like, what was she doing with her hands the entire time? She reminded me of when you see dogs who are forcibly trained to walk on their hind legs. I would not sit through this ever again. It is the worst movie I have seen in a long time.
2:23 - Speaking as a Budapest resident - Vajdahunyad castle is NOT ancient. :) It's here right in the middle of Budapest, built for the 1900 Millenium of Hungary's founding. First from wood and plaster, then - back by popular demand - rebuilt in 1906 from stone. It is a mish-mash of castles from every part of Hungary at the time, which included some famous Transylvanian castles too.
Shows like the Munsters dont need to be remade because that sense of humor still holds up today. There's something earnest and fun about the way visual media used to be campy as opposed to modern camp factor which for me often comes off as cynical or confused.
Rob Zombie keeps getting these writing/directing deals, but I don't think I've ever heard a review of those films that had very many good things to say about them. They always seem to boil down to Rob not really understanding the characters and how to use them.
People often say there are aspects to his work that are great, but they also said what you said. Maybe he needs a co-director who can go against him without hurting his ego? Though most directors tend to be auteurs, and don't react well to such suggestions.
What's ironic is that he actually doesn't get a lot of writing/directing deals. He's been trying to get out of horror for ages with stuff like a Groucho Marx biopic and a sports movie, but the only Zombie projects execs are comfortable bankrolling is his horror stuff. That's the curse of a man who builds his entire persona around how spooky he is, I guess.
Pretty much the only movie of his that gets overall decent reviews is The Devil's Rejects and that is for good reason. Everything else he has done is considered middling to godawful.
Part of the problem is that House of 1,000 Corpses had a great story behind it. People were excited because Rob had shown promise with the aesthetics of his music career and directing music videos. Then it was shelved for several years because the studio was afraid it would get an NC-17 rating... but not before a trailer had been released. So now you have someone with an existing cult following whose grindhouse horror movie isn't being released for being too extreme AND people have had a chance to get a taste of it? You couldn't have chummed the waters more for it when it eventually came out. Then The Devil's Rejects actually did pretty well with critics. So now he had two pretty successful films and a thoroughly established brand. That was enough for him to start getting more mainstream work or funding, albeit limited, for his own projects. He squandered a lot of that early goodwill pretty fast but until now he never quite managed to flop hard enough to totally kill his career. He was just kind of coasting along like latter-day Kevin Smith. Who also keeps getting the money to make low-budget personal projects.
Even in your most scathing review, you still took a considerable amount of time praising the movie's few good aspects. Despite everything, you still acknowledge that even the worst movies still take effort and passion (to varying degrees ofc). That's how I know you're a true appreciator of film and TV.
I went into this with zero expectations and a bong full of high potentcy pot & hash... Have to say I didn't hate it. I actually enjoyed it in a "so bad it's good" way.. like watching an Ed Wood movie

The movie looks like a feverdream nightmare, and Rob's wife is an albatross around the necks of all of his movies. That said, I do think that you can't really do a new Munsters thing regardless, because I don't think you can really do anything with it that would work. If you just try to recreate the Munsters in 2022 you'll just end up with something that will inadvertently disappoint because it either tries and fails to imitate the original too much or if it changes anything and it'll just draw more comparisons to the old sitcom. I mean, what can you even do with this IP that's new or different that would work? Nobody wants a "grittier, more serious" version, and doing the same again will just feel hokey and wrong. The only thing that could maybe work is a cartoon, and even then I doubt it'd be a success because kids wouldn't care.
It's impossible to remake the Munsters. The original cast is why that show is so memorable.

I think the biggest problem with Rob Zombie's movies is the lack of a co-writer, someone who can help flesh out Rob's ideas and bring cohesion to them. As we've seen time and time again from Rob, it's one thing to love a genre, it's another thing to be able to tell a good story with good characters.
True. Reminds me of Harold Ramis coming in and helping Dan Aykroyd rewrite the entire Ghostbusters script. If it hadn't been for Ramis, Ghostbusters would have never happened or we would have gotten a movie with absolutely nothing to keep it focused and glued in place. Dan can be a great writer when he has somebody to bounce ideas off of and keep him centered. Just look at Dan's movie Nothing But Trouble that he wrote and directed and you can see what I mean. That movie could have been something special had Dan had a cohort he could trust to help him make it special.

Interesting thing I only found out now. Al Lewis was only in his early 40s on the Munsters and only 3 years older than Fred Gwynne. And Yvonne De Carlo was actually older than both of them. All three actors in this prequel are older than they were.

It feels like Rob Zombie liked the aesthetics and the concept of the Munsters far more than the show itself. Him lovingly recreating their home while completely failing to get the dynamics of the family in the writing reeks of a guy who simply sees the property as a chance for his friends to cosplay rather than effectively pay homage to.
Rob Zombie on set, day one of filming: "Whoops, I meant _The Addams Family!_ *That's* the show I used to enjoy as a kid. Oh, well. Too late to back out now. I guess I'm making a _Munsters_ film."

Fred Gwynne was such a unique talent: a natural charisma, gentleness, vulnerability and likability. And good humor! This Herman Munster has zero of the aforementioned qualities. That's as kind as I can put it. Abysmal performance. Seriously, Razzie worthy.
Must have taken a century to put this all together with the original commentary clips. I love it. Thanks for this. Creative as hell while getting the point across with a sense of humor.
And done with more care and consideration of the source material than Zombie’s film

Every time I saw Sheri Moon Zombie in a scene her trying to play the character just came across as a stage performance of an elementary school student. I heard that Zombie only took the directors chair so his leading lady could play the character. Probably the worst way to do casting in history of movies
She is basically in almost all his movies, he makes movies just to cast his wife. Just like Ben Falcone casts his wife, Melissa McCarthy in every movie he makes.

Personally I think she was one of the best characters in House of 1k corpses..and the next two. Different script diff genre. Seems like a lot of issues like he describes trying to film a passion project. Why blame her.

We all just sat down to give this a spin. My mom is a massive Adam’s family and munsters fan. She got up to do laundry during the first song bit. She immediately said she appreciated someone cared enough to try to reboot it but that this was terrible. I gave it an honest try and I called it quits not long after the beach scene. It’s sad because you can tell the set designers busted ass and roebuck put on a show but it just flat out sucked.
I really love your videos. Genuine critiques without being mean spirited or "old man yells at cloud" with regards to modern updates. I was never a real fan of the original but it did have heart and felt like real (as far as a monster family goes) characters....this update feels like a cosplay sketch done in someone's home. I think Rob Z has shown us that loving the material isnt enough when it comes to re-creating it.
What they should have done for the Mockingbird Lane scene is have Herman & Lily standing out front admiring the home and one of their neighbors come uo behind them to welcome them, and as soon as they turned around the neighbor would become terrified and run, and herman making an off joke about how he must have smelled bad or something like that.
And that little gag would have make the scene better.
Or they could’ve even gone a bit artistic and done some comedic stunts by doing a tracking shot of Herman just casually walking around his new street trying to get his bearings and figure everything out only for everyone in his path to comedically avoid or escape him in the background whilst Herman’s just oblivious

Great review. This review is far more entertaining than the movie. I have NO IDEA what Rob Zombie was thinking. As a huge fan of the original series , I was pretty horrified what they did with Herman and Lilly. It’s like-has either of these two people ever seen an episode of the original.
You know, it bothers me maybe more than it should that Herman is so mobile and animated. An underrated aspect of Fred Gwynne was how he played it physically and it just is distracting and misguided to have Herman be so bendy and non-monster.
Looking at footage of Gwynne it really seems like the makeup is what helped make the character along with his performance. The dark shadows on his face allowed for his eyes to pop letting that kindness and pure pleasantness Herman has to really be shown, that along with how cumbersome his costume and the bulk they had to add made him move like a monster but have the heart and soul of a gentleman
In this the eye makeup just serves to make Herman look like a complete dolt because it eventuates the dumb look in his eyes and the costume isn’t cumbersome enough so the actor is just pretending he’s heavy making his lumbering movements seem fake and forced. Herman could’ve really done with the Stan & Ollie method they used for John C Riley where he had weights around his groin so he could move like an overweight person of Oliver Hardy’s girth

The idea of the Frankenstein monster getting the wrong brain didn't originate with Young Frankenstein. It was in the original 1931 Frankenstein when the assistant breaks the jar with the correct brain and replaces it with one literally labeled "abnormal." Young Frankenstein just made it more comedic.
Why didn't Doctor Frankenstein read the Label on the Jar? That always bothered me. 🤔
Just as a bit of trivia, 1931 film was actually the second time Mary Shelley's novel was brought on screen. The first movie was shot in 1910. Neither the novel nor the 1910 version use the "wrong brain" idea.

An addition that ruined Shelley's message on prejudice and responsibility for others, I must add. The literary Monster wasn't created evil, his thirst for revenge grew from being shunned by both his Creator and human society. The novel is a morality play: Frankenstein's creation failed because of his own failings.
Perhaps the filmmakers didn't trust themselves to convincingly portray such subtleties or didn't trust the viewers to accept a movie monster having this kind of psychological depth - so they dumbed everything down to a label on a jar.

I'm still not convinced someone walked in on Rob and Sheri doing some Munsters kinky roleplay and to save face he was just examining that she was just dressing up as Lilly for a new Munsters movie he was writing.

Sheri doing a Lily cosplay strip show would have actually played into her strengths. And I honestly don't mean that as a slight. She got her start as a dancer, choreographer, and costume designer with Rob when he went solo. She's also never seemed shy about her body or embracing her sex appeal. Like when she posed nude for the cover of American Made Music to Strip By. Finally, she pulled off a similar enough look in the video for "Living Dead Girl" that I could see it working.
The problem is that it while would be a great burlesque act that's totally different from starring in a film.
Honestly, Rob Zombie would absolutely never be ashamed of being caught in Munsters role-play, he'd probably film it and try to release it

I just recently watched an episode of the original just for the nostalgia, wondering if it was just the rose-tinted glasses of my childhood making me believe they were funny. But it was indeed funny. Even in the Latin-American dub (because everything came to us dubbed back then) the jokes hit the mark and it never feels forced or too silly, it just puts a smile to your face.

One of the funniest was when Lily thought Herman was cheating on her, so she had a detective agency follow him around. Turns out, Herman joined this agency and was tasked with following himself around.
Is amazing how many latam dubs manage to keep and at times improve over the source material.
The actors for the dub managed to keep a lot of tje inflextions and nuacens of the show
@@Hecatom that's because most of the people who dubbed in Mexico back in the day were stage and TV performers, since dubbing was a fairly recent trade at the time, so they relied a lot on professional actresses and actors that had to improvise using their knowledge and skills to get the job done.
It feels like a lot of this is inspired by an idealized self-image of Rob and Sheri's relationship. He sees himself as the shy, misfit monster who attracts this gorgeous woman and they're just instantly in love. Which fits with what I've heard about their relationship. Hence the time of Herman being a rock star. It's not in there to make sense or suit the plot but because it matches his personal history.

Fun fact: The original Munsters were filmed in color, but was broadcast in black and white because it was cheaper. Plus it was at a time when most people had only black and white sets.

One issue is that Sheri Moon Zombie is a true negative void of talent that's brought down every film her husband's ever made in direct proportion to her prominence therein. She literally could not be a working actress without his constant intervention.

Heck, James Gunn cast his own wife in "Peacemaker", yet he gets away with it only because people like the show. Whereas here, most people hated this movie, so the fact that Zombie cast his own wife makes it seem that way. I can legit guarantee you that if this movie had been better received, then nobody would care about Zombie's wife being Lilly in this film.

I thought maybe this would be good, since Rob Zombie finally got a chance to make a movie about a family of monsters who are really just misunderstood and not bad people really. He seemed to be trying to do that with the second films in his Halloween and Firefly series, but the monsters in those movies are actually monstrous.
With all the resources at his disposal it seems like Rob wrote the movie based on his memory of the Munsters from a kid

I was addicted to the Munsters as a kid. I was born a goth at heart. When I heard about a remake I was both excited and nervous because the show was such a hinkie hit. The character portrayals were so iconic I knew it would be difficult to even come close to the exact recipe. I tried so hard to watch the remake but within the first 2 minutes I was over it. I was so disappointed that I couldn't recognize ANY of the characters at all. I was even almost bitter about it. I went about telling anyone who hadn't seen it NOT to see it. In my personal opinion it's a travesty. A mockery. A cheap and abusive take on a classic beloved by so many. IF it should be done again, I would love to see it in the hands of Tim Burton. He's probably the only one capable of bringing such an oddity back to life. If I had money to spare, I'd be investing in that all the way. Cheers to effort Rob. You came, you played, you lost. Next time maybe, but not with my Munsters.

Also, Ed Wood looked out for his friends as well, but people remember his movies more because they were enjoyably bad (being on MST3K and Rifftrax helps): Plan 9 from Outer Space, The Violent Years, The Sinister Urge, Bride of the Monster
As far as I know, nobody handed over existing properties to Ed Wood to ruin, either. He had to come up with his own ideas.

Its pretty much Texas Chainsaw without Leatherface...and if you've been drinking, Devils Rejects. 3 from Hell isn't even mentionable...that one was totally forgettable.

There was a line in the film that summed up my thoughts exactly. When The Count sees Herman on TV doing his shtick, he says "I can feel my brain cells dying." That was my experience.
Look I like a good movie based on a TV show. I LOVE The Brady Bunch movies (well first two) and Addams Family (first 2 again). Even Get Smart was done well. This was painful. Only two times did i come close to a laugh. The end of the vampires dance when the confetti popped. And the sign on the fence reading "We are tired of hiding the bodies". Both of them were barely smiles.
Also I think the editing and pacing absolutely kills this movie from start to finish, what made the Munsters so good was how it stuck mostly to the family dynamic and how the characters worked off of each other in every scene.
I think had it stuck to the classic formula of the series and just relied on the performances of the characters as well as telling a more cleverly written story and cut out the rest of the cast that serves no purpose, this could’ve been so much better even from a studio like 1440. Less is more, and the Munsters wasn’t a high budget show , and yet it’s remembered as a classic.
About scoring that technicolor look on digital: Ti West NAILED IT with Pearl. I totally thought it was shot on film before I looked it up. Fantastic work in post on that movie!
Herman having a voice like pubescent teenage boy whose voice is breaking is a master stroke. Well done Rob, you just keep hitting home runs.

I thought it was fine. The worst thing they could've done is through social commentary thoughout the entire movie.... which is what they did with "Wednesday ", did you like that one? I believe, if youre going to make a movie of an entire TV series, then this is what you would do... you dont have the original actors of the TV show, i mean, they were good, but it was very campy. Not looking for a masterpiece, but i thought, for a quick taste, it was fine... glad it wasnt a series

It took too long to introduce Herman, and it too long for them to get to the house (which indeed looked wonderful!). A lot of the story could have been jettisoned. The performances may not have been as grating with a better script.
I think Zombie as a director works best when he's allowed to do his own thing outside of any constraints. That's why I liked Devil's rejects, Parts of his Halloween and hated pretty much a lot of other stuff.
I feel like the problem with this is that as a fan of The Munsters, he's shackling himself into doing something faithful as opposed to his own thing
He'd have been better off doing a grimdark Munsters spinoff/elseworlds movie.

Thing is Munsters especially in the modern age could work really well, it’s a timeless idea when you think about it as the joke of “monsters living a normal suburban lifestyle and not realising they’re terrifying everyone around them” can work no matter what decade it’s in. Hell Rob could’ve still gone dark but kept it true to the original, like imagine a Herman that looks actually like a bunch of corpse parts sewn together but keep the personality the same, making Herman more horrible and House Of 1000 Corpses looking but keeping him the same oblivious dope would actually work for the joke
When its announced the movie loses theatrical release & goes straight to dvd you know it's a BOMB!!!!
I tuned out so many times when watching it. The only time it pulled me in was the visuals, the sets, and the looks at times. For how the date with Nosferatu as Lily comes in was great. I also like the stylish look when they zoom in and show hearts, confusion, or something. I thought that was really cool and loved the vibe it gave but the movie plot and story made me feel like a chore to watch it. I felt like I watched 3 or 4 different movies at once. Like, What did I just watch exactly? One moment, you have Lilly wanting to fall in love with the right guy. Then the next, they get married, but the pacing is everywhere as now it is Herman vs. the dad, but then you have them being broke and having no house. Then you have them in Hollywood wanting jobs but then it was the neighbors being unreal. It was everywhere. oh and do not get me the confusing time setting and time era it is place. WHEN does this takes place? early 19th century or 50's? I felt so lost and confuse on the time era they were in, all I got is that they have electricity and industrial music and goth dark wave music.

I never watched The Munsters, but just watching this review, I can tell the original Herman was something special l. His performance is excellent, and even when I can see a joke coming, I’m still pleased with the his deivery

Fred Gwynne had a fabulous warmth about him. I actually loved his performance in the reruns so much that Herman was my imaginary friend as a child. 😄

It's hard to replace the original cast. You have to allow creativity in the actor Fred gwynne and al lewis had that and even Yvonne di Carlo
The movie had four or five directors before Rob Zombie. He was brought in to save the project. Usually multiple directors indicates there is a problem with the film.
Fred Gwynne and Al Lewis were in dozens of shows together back when networks were going through shows like lawsuits.
Their chemistry is impossible to replicate today.

Thank you for this! Firstly, I completely agree with you on Daniel Roebuck being the only character who did the film justice. Early on in the movie he complained about his back hurting and I joked, "it's probably because he carried the entire movie." I had a hard time even finishing the movie. The first time I made it through about an hour and I had to turn it off. Everyone I know that watched it could barely make it through the first 30 minutes. The character of Herman was abysmal. Absolutely annoying throughout the entire film. I like Sheri Moon, but her "performance" was awkward and didn't make any sense. Like, what was she doing with her hands the entire time? She reminded me of when you see dogs who are forcibly trained to walk on their hind legs. I would not sit through this ever again. It is the worst movie I have seen in a long time.

2:23 - Speaking as a Budapest resident - Vajdahunyad castle is NOT ancient. :) It's here right in the middle of Budapest, built for the 1900 Millenium of Hungary's founding. First from wood and plaster, then - back by popular demand - rebuilt in 1906 from stone. It is a mish-mash of castles from every part of Hungary at the time, which included some famous Transylvanian castles too.
Shows like the Munsters dont need to be remade because that sense of humor still holds up today. There's something earnest and fun about the way visual media used to be campy as opposed to modern camp factor which for me often comes off as cynical or confused.

Rob Zombie keeps getting these writing/directing deals, but I don't think I've ever heard a review of those films that had very many good things to say about them. They always seem to boil down to Rob not really understanding the characters and how to use them.
People often say there are aspects to his work that are great, but they also said what you said.
Maybe he needs a co-director who can go against him without hurting his ego? Though most directors tend to be auteurs, and don't react well to such suggestions.

What's ironic is that he actually doesn't get a lot of writing/directing deals. He's been trying to get out of horror for ages with stuff like a Groucho Marx biopic and a sports movie, but the only Zombie projects execs are comfortable bankrolling is his horror stuff.
That's the curse of a man who builds his entire persona around how spooky he is, I guess.
Pretty much the only movie of his that gets overall decent reviews is The Devil's Rejects and that is for good reason. Everything else he has done is considered middling to godawful.
Part of the problem is that House of 1,000 Corpses had a great story behind it. People were excited because Rob had shown promise with the aesthetics of his music career and directing music videos. Then it was shelved for several years because the studio was afraid it would get an NC-17 rating... but not before a trailer had been released. So now you have someone with an existing cult following whose grindhouse horror movie isn't being released for being too extreme AND people have had a chance to get a taste of it? You couldn't have chummed the waters more for it when it eventually came out.
Then The Devil's Rejects actually did pretty well with critics. So now he had two pretty successful films and a thoroughly established brand. That was enough for him to start getting more mainstream work or funding, albeit limited, for his own projects. He squandered a lot of that early goodwill pretty fast but until now he never quite managed to flop hard enough to totally kill his career. He was just kind of coasting along like latter-day Kevin Smith. Who also keeps getting the money to make low-budget personal projects.
Even in your most scathing review, you still took a considerable amount of time praising the movie's few good aspects. Despite everything, you still acknowledge that even the worst movies still take effort and passion (to varying degrees ofc). That's how I know you're a true appreciator of film and TV.
I didn't hate this movie as much as you did, but I laughed harder at your "Groundhog Day" clip than I did the entire movie, so there's that.

The movie looks like a feverdream nightmare, and Rob's wife is an albatross around the necks of all of his movies.
That said, I do think that you can't really do a new Munsters thing regardless, because I don't think you can really do anything with it that would work. If you just try to recreate the Munsters in 2022 you'll just end up with something that will inadvertently disappoint because it either tries and fails to imitate the original too much or if it changes anything and it'll just draw more comparisons to the old sitcom.
I mean, what can you even do with this IP that's new or different that would work? Nobody wants a "grittier, more serious" version, and doing the same again will just feel hokey and wrong. The only thing that could maybe work is a cartoon, and even then I doubt it'd be a success because kids wouldn't care.
