Rob Zombie's The Munsters (2022) Review - Monster Madness

- It’s time to get into the spirit of Halloween and Monster Madness or “Munster” Madness today. Every October, I like to do something a little different. This time I’ll be checking out some NEW horror and monster movies. And by NEW I mean, they just came out! This is exciting for me, because it gives me an excuse to watch brand new stuff, instead of always just going into my familiar rolodex, digging into classic horror and things from the past. Which I enjoy and will continue to do, but today’s pick is equally nostalgic as its a reboot of the classic 60s show by Rob Zombie, The Munsters!

One thing in any Munsters reboot that will always be hard to capture, is the chemistry between Al Lewis and Fred Gwynne. They had worked together before and knew how to play off each other. They are an unsung comedy team. I think it's possible to do again, but the original show was lightning in a bottle.
Tis a prequel after all
Rob Zombie should direct a new Chucky movie or any other slasher icon
@@eduardosanchez86After Halloween others probably don't want him touching their slasher villains
This is the kindest review from a real fan, someone who wants to find something to like about it, but you can tell it's far from what the fans of the show would have asked for.
I totally agree I couldn't finish it unfortunately 😢
Lily was like a valley girl in this and I couldn't get that out of my head. Highly disappointed
Idk. It sounds like he's more of a fan of the _idea_ of The Munsters than a fan of the actual _The Munsters_ TV show....
I dunno. I liked it. It was a fun romp.
Like it'd be easy for it to work with modern sensibilities anyway.
James might be the only person I've seen that says anything positive about this interpretation of Herman Munster.
For real, this movie was straight trash
Andy (Maniacal Cinephile) from StitchedTogetherPics was pretty complimentary of the movie while acknowledging a lot of the issues
@@Lake_be Yep. I love the Munsters and Rob Zombie, but this was a complete crapjob
i've seen plenty of positive reviews for this movie.
In case he's written the review himself. 😀
I loved the ending montage when Herman, Lilly and Grandpa drove the Munster Coach full speed into a police barricade, guns blazing, to the dulcet tones of "Freebird". That was awesome.
See I personally feel like it was a bit lacking in Rob Zombie’s wife. More of her, and it would have been perfect.
Stahhhpppp
And then herman did a backflip and snapped zods neck. Right?
@@johnr6087 she can't act... she's phucking Terrible
I liked the part where the frankenstein pointed the gun at the dracular and said: "Haunt THIS, mother -----!"
I would love to see James Rolfe and Rob Zombie in the same room just talking about old horror stuff together, and spouting back and forth trivia.
Don't forget that Nerd and Rob Zombie are also super Sentai/Kamen Rider fans.
Rob Zombie isn’t exactly friendly. Just ask his neighbors
There are far more interesting and informed people than James to talk to. Dude couldn’t even say Notre Dame properly for years.
@@brutallyhonest123I met him once. Can confirm he's not friendly at all 😂
I didn't want it to end, because it was finally starting to feel like the TV show, at the end. I hope there is a second one, that focuses on the whole family.
Exactly how I felt. It ended where I wanted it to begin.
Sadly, he just announced he's getting old, and making this movie was a miserable experience and he has no plans or desires to make any more or any of his other series.
One of them said it's a love letter to the original
Fun Fact: Rob Zombie's debut film was almost a proposed The Crow sequel called The Crow: 2037 but as we know that fell apart and his debut was instead House of 1,000 Corpses
We know this?
Crow city of angels is a really underrated film
@@johnclavis yes, there's articles and interviews detailing it
Love the original crow but everything since has been bad.
It actually sounded amazing have you checked out what it was about?
The one show that can never be redone. Fred Gwynne and Al Lewis with DeCarlo were a combo burned into history
Sheri Moon Zombie was cast? WHAT A SURPRISE!!!!! I never ever in my wildest dreams would have guessed that. WOW! Nobody saw that coming...
And she can't act her way out of a wet paper bag...
And of course she’s the lead. lol.
Certainly an actor of that high calibur would blend in flawlessly.
Sometimes it seems like Rob only does Movies for her.... Well, not only sometimes....
Nothing can be worse then lords of salem
October comes and goes quick every year. I feel like I get done watching Monster Madness and then a year flies by.
flies^^
@@HaleStorm1998 fixed it.
It's Monster Madness season baby! One of the best times of the year 🎃
You said it my friend
I couldn't agree more!!
YES!!
Been rewatching the old ones over the last few days haha so excited
@@Wizballin going on a late night walk with this playing in the background is the perfect atmosphere to 😮
Mixing Rob Zombie with The Munsters is like combining Ghostbusters with NES video games. Sure it might sound like the ultimate dragon ball fusion of greatness but instead ends up with a whimper.
Every review of this film I have watched have all used the same word "Different", and in that way, everyone isn't wrong. I had my 70 year-old mother watch the film, and ironically, she described it as "watching 60s Batman", so the movie does succeed in having viberant colors (another thing every review online seems to agree with).
Your mom's "60's Batman" quote makes those weird shots where Lily moons about while clipart screensavers play make far, far more sense.
@@martinschofield4895 I mean the point was to be a modern 60's movie. That seemed like the whole point to me.
lets call it for what it is. a movie for stoners
@@jaredgenesis6185 ha ….. that’s why I didn’t mind it 🤦🏻♂️ 💨
the Count of St. Germain approves..
Love the idea for this years Monster Madness. Just hearing James talk about movies is fun in of itself. It was also fun to hear such an honest review of the film. I would have guessed that this kind of wacky humor would be to James' taste, but it's commendable that he can see past that and view the films flaws as well.
As GWAR said: "Whatever happened to Eddie Munster?!?!?!"
“I’m looking at him!!”
Gwar! Gwar! Gwar!
Say, that's quite a hairdo!
Coaching the Chicago Bulls. Won 2 National Championships at Florida
It’s as big as the.. the.. Hindenburg. And I bet it’d go up just as fast if I took this lighter to it.
This film can be reviewed in six simple words:
"It's a hate crime to cinema."
Grandpa was the only character that was cast properly, the others... "not so much" is the kindest thing I can say.
I don't see you doing any better.
Sheri moon zombie can't act
"It's" and "a" were kind of redundant. 4 words.
I didn't think so. Prefer the classic series of course but I think calling it a hate crime to cinema is a stretch. Its hokey..,spooky elements and fun. Much like the original series.
@@carlosspeicywiener7018 Why even bother replying? "Like you could do any better" "I don't see you doing any better" etc are all such weak rebuttals that do nothing to disprove the point. You don't have to make a movie or a video game or whatever to have an opinion on said subject matter. Roger and Ebert didn't make movies yet they reviewed movies professionally for decades.
I’m honestly tired of his movies. He always has to have his wife in pretty much all his movies, she’s no Johnny depp. Pretty sure he makes movies to only get her a gig
Sheri Moon ruins his movies, which were already bad.
The only person who wants Rob Zombie to keep making movies is his wife as it’s the only work she gets
I’m honestly surprised you’ve never done a Monster Madness called Munster Madness and just review a bunch of episodes of the show during the month
That's a fantastic idea actually!!
Or just a countdown of the best episodes of all monster-centric TV shows (Tales from the Crypt, Twilight Zone, Outer Limits, Tales from the Dark Side, you get the idea).
My favourite ep has to be the one where Herman thinks Lily is having a baby and assumed a toy version of Herman was the baby.
It can be a weekly thing. Call it Munster Munday
or any show with the square headed frankenstein monster. i love that character design
I watched it with my parents when it was released, and they loved it. (they're in their 60's and they grew up watching the original show btw)
That's shocking then
There was also the 2012 movie called "Mockingbird Lane" which was technically The Munsters as the character names were the same about The Munster family moving into 1313 Mockingbird Lane. The movie starred Jerry O'Connell as Herman, Eddie Izzard as Grandpa. Despite the pilot getting really high reviews, it was immediately canceled after the pilot aired. The movie was going for a modern darker and edgier horror/comedy
I saw this awhile ago and it's so well done! Find it and watch it if you can!
I thought ment to be A pilot for a series but didn't take off
Wasn’t a movie, was a test run. They never had plans to make it a show but said if it was well received and the cast were open to it, they’d continue it. I enjoyed it.
Glad you mentioned it, I loved it nice to take totally fresh take on it
I don't recall that dogshit getting high reviews.
Edit: forgive my irreverence, I really hated that thing, despite liking everyone involved.
Maybe I missed it when you were listing reboots, but I think you forgot The Munsters Today from '87-'91? Was I just not paying attention? It's the one where Lee Meriwether hung-up her catsuit and played Lilly. You're doing a fine jod, James. Thank you for still being around and creating content after all these years!
"Whatever happened to Eddie Munster? I'm lookin' at him!"
The cinematography fell very flat for me sadly
Finally watched the original bride of Frankenstein from 1935. It's amazing how visually it was done back in the day.
Fathom events?
@@Bluegundam13 Its streaming on Peacock, wish my local amc would release this chassic in theaters to see them on a big screen.
It’s one of the best movies ever
Absolutely terrible movie. You can't cast people who can't act to play these roles. The original cast was acting royalty and funny. This is a slap in the face to the original Munsters classic!
What I loved about Devil's Rejects, and why I think it worked for me, is that utterly macabre humor that ultimately made it a even more terrifying movie.
@DuncanAndFriends Captain Spaulding was one of the greatest characters ever
@@Durmomo0 yes
Rob was great at making you feel empathy for the most evil people in the movie by the end. You were supposed to root for Sheriff Wydell but you ended up rooting for the serial killers in the end.
I can always look forward to your reviews that don’t just bash on the movie and gives it such an honest and fair overview!
It feels like the haunted world of el superbeasto meets the munsters.
Hats off entertainment did a great review of this. But certainly nice to hear your input too!
Does anyone remember the reboot NBC tried to do like 10-15 years ago? It was just called Mocking Bird Lane, had Eddie Izzard and Jerry O'Connell
Yep I remember seeing it back in 2012, it was so panned by critics, and the general public, it lasted one episode.
I LOVED that take on the Munsters.
I actually really dug that one tbh. It was a run reimagining
In addition to ruining The Munsters, Bryan Singer also ruined the lives of many children by molesting them.
I only knew people who loved that thing.
I was expecting it to be so bad, that i was actually surprised and had fun throughout.
You were surprised that it was exactly what you thought or that it was far worse?
Same!
The only upside are the set designs that's it
Years back I watched both The Addams Family and The Munsters. (The original 60's TV shows)
I think The Munsters had the bigger budget.
Not only were there more makeup effects, but there were more scenes of The Munsters going out and doing things.
i think Addams Family was better tho
im sure your right, the episode of herman on eddys go cart was hilarious. not to mention they had actual cars that are still around.
It’s nice to see James make videos like this again.
I'll be honest, I don't want to know their origins. Part of the charm to me in the old show was that they were monsters, but just were...we didn't need to know Herman was a flesh golem, he just was Herman.
If you watched the original show you would know that they are constantly talking about their origins. 🤦
I’ve never been a fan of rob
Zombie personally. The few movies of his I have seen have a very strange tone and not in an agreeable way. I feel like on some level he likes horror without really understanding it or what can make it great?
it's an understatement to say I look forward to new Monster Madness episodes every year. Excited for more insight!
I think Rob Zombie was going for a Disney-like, kid friendly, Halloween movie. Family friendly is where the money is after all. Im sure a goal of his was to introduce the iconic Munster's characters to Gen Z. It's definitely not targeted towards adults. The target age demographic is likely 7-12. 💯
I couldn't finish it. I thought it was pretty terrible.
I'm glad to always see James do Monster Madness!!!
I enjoyed it and all the nods to different episodes of the show, including the robot. I have gripes, mostly his wife as lily, but Grandpa and Herman were fun and well done.
I went into this open minded as a fan of the show and I did not hate it. Actually, there is quite a bit of fun to be had overall.
The biggest difference between the Addams and the Munsters is that the Munsters are completely oblivious to the fact that they are an unusual family and are legitimately baffled by people's reactions to them, often to the point that they misattribute it to something else other than their appearance. The Addams, on the other hand, are completely aware of how strange they are; they just don't care what people think of them!
Not exactly. The Addams Family do not think that their own behaviour is strange either (they think everyone else are the weird ones), but they are at least aware that other people find them frightening.
Whereas the Monsters are completely baffled when people scream and run away from them.
Seen Rob a handful of times loved seeing him tour with Alice Cooper
Rob zombies wife gotta be in everything Rob does?
My friends and I were just talking about this two days ago. Quote "I'm sure Cinemassacre will do a review on this movie." We have been fans since 2006.
I actually enjoyed it more than I thought I would, which I think says something.
Monster Madness been a tradition every year since it’s inception (2007 I believe ?) I’m 27 feeling like 12 again :)
Fun take this year. So happy to see monster madness getting back to form!
It was very sweet to see both The Addams Family and The Munsters’ revival films end with the theme songs.
The whole prequel thing was also done in the not too recent Adam's family movie. They start out with showing Morticia and Gomez getting the house after being married. Then it goes into them being a family.
The universal classics are finally on peacock. I can’t wait to watch these classic films! I’ve know about them since monster madness back in the day but have never seen them
Some of them. Wish they went a bit deeper in the selection.
Wow,I was born in 1988 and remember this show being aired on BBC as a kid. 25ish years later!!! Also captain scarlet and stingray were broadcast regularly
It seemed to be more of a prequel than a re boot I think
I thought it was awesome that Rob got the surviving cast of The Munsters in this as well especially
when some of them are nearly 90 years old like Marilyn.
Yes! Monster Madness is back! So glad james is bringing back the tradition
You said it way better than probably a lot of people could James, especially as a fellow experienced film maker. Happy Halloween man.
Yay! I'm so happy to see the glorious return of Monster Madness!
As Paul McCartney quipped about resurrecting The Beatles "You can't reheat a soufflé." Same goes for Munsters reboots.
There was a reboot, The Munsters Today, in 1988 that James forgot to mention.
John Schuck played Herman Munster.
He didn't mention the 2012 NBC reboot either.
This was such a cozy video and a great start to my October. I’m a spring and summer guy, I just love warm weather, but monster madness content actually gets me a little excited when the leaves start to yellow autumn🍂 ❤
I'll take cold and snow over heat and humidity.
@@SonOfTheDawn515 same
Rob Zombie kept 99% of the budget for himself.
So $99?
I liked it. Rob Zombie’s passion for the show came through, and I really liked the look of it. I wasn’t expecting a laugh a minute or any kind of comedic genius. But it managed to make me laugh a few times. The corny jokes seemed perfectly in keeping with the tone of the show. Overall, not bad!
For some reason, the inflation joke while Herman was getting ready for his date with Lily made me laugh way more than it was probably supposed to
I get a laugh when Herman is singing and says “working in a mirror factory is something i could see myself doing” lol
This movie was beyond bad
One of the cast members said its a love letter to the original show.
Not gonna lie, this looks absolutely awful.
Every Rob Zombie movie pitch: "Blah blah, nostalgia. Blah blah, Childhood trauma. Blah, blah, reimagining no-one wants. And my wife can play the female lead!"
His wife: "It's the part I was born to play!"
This gives me vibes of the Roger Corman 90s Fantastic Four that was only made to hold onto the rights, made cynically and on a shoestring budget, yet still somehow manages to have its own charm, purely through how much fun the actors seem to be having.
Love that movie, super guilty pleasure
This room just makes me miss Rental Reviews. I want more from the "Landlord" plot you had going.
I liked this movie. I like everything zombie has done. Even the strange ones like witches of Salem and number 31 were entertaining😀
This movie was absolutely horrible dude. I don’t know how you found Herman acceptable. Or his wife. They didn’t understand the characters at all.
I love it when James says what I'm thinking. This is the best review of Rob Zombie's Munsters.
He should do an Animation-thon and review animated horror movies like Coraline, Hotel Transylvania, Fear(s) of the Dark, Felidae, 9, Birdboy, The Haunted World of El Superbeasto, Monster House, The Wolf House, any of the Scooby-Doo movies, etc.
Honestly there is enough Scooby movies to do there own Monster Madness
That's more like a nostalgia critic thing
@@slaytanicsabbath But James actually gives insight on the pros and cons of the movie.
Doug gives barebones analysis and fills the video with endless unfunny sketches.
@@kevinthepilgrim I agree. Besides I barely see James talk about animated movies and it would be great to see him expand a little. Besides, Doug has started to ignore the obscure stuff while James actually tries to make them more mainstream.
i wonder if he forgot, and he make this up on the fly, not complaining, must be tough finding 31 movies every single year
I personally really enjoyed it, and I also think ice cream and beer go great together.
This is what I like... Only James doing the review...
I loved the Munsters growing up, watching this, it was different but I liked it! Herman killed it, I laughed a lot with the actor’s performance. I’m a sucker for dad jokes and light awkwardness
They should have cast Alyssa Milano as Lilly
Starting to lose me here James......
I loved the "car 54 where are you!!" Line
MONSTER MADNESS IS BACK!! THANK YOU JAMES!!!
Yesssss
This is like when Yoshiaki Kawajiri made a Highlander movie. I was super stoked and thought it was gonna be AWESOME. blecch
THIS was the review I was waiting for.
Elsa’s last name was Lanchester, not Lancaster.
Trivia: While Bud Westmore received credit for the original show’s makeup, it was Jack Kevan who actually applied Fred Gwynne’s “Herman” makeup. Kevan also applied Glenn Strange’s makeup in 1948’s “Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein.”
Glenn Strange was second only to Karloff I think. He had the perfect look. Lugosi was the worst. His face was wrong for the monster
Not one true funny moment in this movie for me. It was such a slog. And Zombies wife can’t act.
This is the kindest review I've seen for this by far.
It's crazy how you have become my favorite movie critic, you come at everything in a very wholesome way with sprinkle of nostalgia. Never would have thought I'd say that about the avgn
Lol
You have to be high on member-berries to find anything redeeming here.
Thank you James Rolfe for giving us more Monster Madness! Happy Halloween and autumn season everyone! ✌🎃
With Rob Zombie, I tried to really like 1,000 Corpses but lets be real, its a reimagining of Texas Chainsaw Massacre
It feels so much like a pilot for a series. A few tweaks maybe
Oh, you were serious about this being a funny and enjoyable movie. 🙁
I enjoyed this movie. It was like a 2 hour haunted house. It was nothing but fun. I loved the visuals, the look, the set decoration, and the character make up (Orlock rocked!). This movie was not meant to be some deep plot or character study. I believe that it was meant to be a fun Halloween season movie featuring classic monster movie make ups.
Miss opportunity for Ron Perlman to play Herman. I had always thought he would have made the perfect Herman Munster.
This movie looks terrible! LOL
The Munsters are never “hysterical” in color.
You forgot to mention "Here Come The Munsters" from 1995, dude!
He also forgot "The Munsters Today" series that ran in syndication for 3 seasons starting in 88. it was not great, but better than this mess.
I've always liked how Herman would break mirrors by looking at them.
oh thank you I felt like a crazy person for enjoying this movie
Rob Zombie is somewhat of a curiosity to me. I enjoy metal and I'm a big horror buff, but most of his art falls flat for me.
Still, I agree that the dude works hard and his heart is in the right place. I have nothing but respect for the man.
I was really hoping James would look at this reimagining.
this movie was an absolute travesty. rob zombie put the nail in his own coffin with this one.
