They tried making a comeback with Princess and the Frog in 2010, but it wasn't that much of a success. The Alice in Wonderland live action from the same year on the other hand...
The Great Mouse Detective is easily my favorite, it's that kind of movie that I can watch forever. And while it isn't in my top 5, the original Rescuers holds a special place in my heart. It's such an offbeat movie that I feel you either get it or you don't. And if you do get it, then it's a perfectly charming movie you can vibe to, but it also has a more cohesive story structure that isn't as meandering as so many early Disney films. And the main leads are just so charming that I could watch them do anything together.
The Sword in the Stone was my favorite growing up and looking back, it's still my favorite. The donkey-morph scene in Pinnochio freaked me out as a kid (and as an adult), for the same reasons you said. The desperation and if memory serves, he calls for his mama just before his vocals turn into the hee-haws of a donkey. It was a horror scene in the middle of a fantasy movie. They don't make 'em like that anymore.
I liked The Sword in the Stone as well, the Merlin v Madam Mim scenes and Archamedies the crochety owl are hilarious, but the story where Wart becomes a squirrel and the girl squirrel falls in love with him, man that was sad :(
You could argue that in The Sleeping Beauty, the Prince and the Princess are just supporting characters, while the actual main characters are the fairies. That's ultimately what the movie is about, isn't it - the power struggle between the fae and how they use the humankind as pawns. I loved getting this new perspective on the story and the film when I read about it once.
Oddly I always felt there was a clear antagonist, but there was not so much a main character as you watch the world unfold. Each piece has there part to play that just so happens to coallese into this wonderful experience. Or I mean we could just Maleficent got gang banged up upon by a whole kingdom at once.
Most of my favorites come from the Bronze Age and the Millennium Era, but if I had to pick a top 5: 1. Fantasia 2. Treasure Planet 3. Atlantis: The Lost Empire 4. Robin Hood 5. Hercules Of course, there are tons of others like Meet the Robinsons, Alice in Wonderland, The Aristocats, Pinocchio, Peter Pan, etc. It's hard to choose!
That movie is approaching 100 years old, and it's still one of the finest examples of animation in the entire medium. How many movies can you say that about?

Sleeping Beauty definitely took inspiration from the old medieval manuscripts and book artworks of the 900's-1400's. Also, I remember a "making of" this movie years ago and they said the production pushed a couple of animators close to the nut house by the end because it was so labor intense.
Alice In Wonderland is a masterpiece. Sleeping Beauty has the best animation on the whole, but Alice's character animation has so many layers of polish that I haven't seen in anything else in animation. My favourite Disney film is Lilo & Stitch, with Aladdin and The Rescuers duology close behind.
I wish disney gave this movie the live action treatment instead of popular movies like lion king, aladdin, beauty and the beast. Imagine Ian McKellen as Merlin and Patrick Stewart as Archimedes.
Great selection James. I don't think there were many I really even disliked but there are the ones that stand out more than others like 101 Dalmatians or the Rescuers. The Rescuers was done by Don Bluth, he was the animation director for that one which gives it it's somewhat dark tone. It's one of my favorite Disney movies right next to Robin Hood
There are probably a million "My Top 5 Favorite Disney Movies" on RUclips, but it speaks to the power of James that I actually click on this. Not because I care about Disney movies, but because I care what James digs about each.
For my personal favorite, it has to be Treasure Planet. I just love the characters, especially Jim and Silver's dynamic, alongside the great visuals and animation.
The sword in the stone was that movie that unlocked my imagination to an extreme level. I watched that movie over and over imagining being one of these animals and imagining what it would like to have adventures with magic. It's the movie that drove me deep into fantasy books and games. Seriously thank you for digging truly into your child mind to build this list.
Most of these Disney classics hold up so well, man. Over the last few years I've rewatched the likes of lion King, sword in the stone among others and I liked em just as much as I did as a kid. They are truly timeless

Very interesting list! My favorites would be The Lion King, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Lilo & Stitch, Emperor's New Groove and The Little Mermaid.
With classics like these and much more by Disney Animation, I always thought just reducing this to a list of the top *5* best of all numbers wouldn’t be doing it enough Justice.
The early 2000s animated Disney movies like treasure planet and Atlantis; the lost empire are among my favorites.
James uploads on my birthday! This is awesome!
Happy birthday man
Hey happy bday!
@@wljj56 Thx
@@Daburubareru Thank you
Treasure Planet will always be my favorite Disney movie without a doubt.
Me to its Amazing and we could agree its very underrated and it deserves more love and attention
I watch Ichabod & MR Toad when I was very young in the 90s. It was the scariest movie in the world to me. The tree freaked me out
The Rescuers was done by Don Bluth, he was the animation director for that one which gives it it's somewhat dark tone. It's one of my favorite Disney movies right next to Robin Hood
Lucifer is there in the sequels, don’t fret. Lucifee too mean to die lol
Was not expecting this. Great video James.
There are probably a million "My Top 5 Favorite Disney Movies" on RUclips, but it speaks to the power of James that I actually click on this. Not because I care about Disney movies, but because I care what James digs about each.
I think it's great that you speak such a calm and clear English. As a German, I can understand everything very well. Thank you
For my personal favorite, it has to be Treasure Planet.

Excellent and so nostalgic analysis James! Thank you so much for cherishing of our fond memories of the days long gone…😢Remember when my father was young and alive and when my parents were young.
The donkey transformation in Pinocchio scared me as a kid as well, it's terrifying.

16:59, When you finally mentioned your top Disney animated movie, I nearly fell out of my couch. I was not expecting you to name that your favorite! I love that movie! My favorite too! I hope Disney makes this one into a live-action film!
Most of the Disney movies are always amazing, I'll say Wall-E, The Incredible and the original Aladin will always be my favorite movie. For me Wall-E was special because how unique it was and it's own magical world.
Agreed💯💯💯
The opening of Wall-E is still to this day one of my favourite openings in any film.
Totally agree with you. Also, great profile picture.
@@madsceptictrooper6803 Thanks!
Sword in the stone is hands down my favorite Disney movie. So fun and still holds up today perfectly
My favorite is The Great Mouse Detective
I'll always enjoy these retrospectives on classic films
The sword in the stone is also my favourite, just because of the female squirrel , i felt her pain so much :(
