Everyone has popular movies that they just don’t get or don’t like as much as anyone else. That can also apply to music, TV, and a lot of other things.
Honestly the only character I can name on that movie is Jason Spade. Other than that, most people have trouble even naming one character from that movie and don’t remember anything about it except blue people.
I've never even see "The Sixth Sense" because everyone's ruined it for me by giving away the ending... Makes me wish I could give myself temporary amnesia so I could watch movies without them being ruined or to experience them again as if I've never seen them.
That's the problem when a super amazing ending gets really well known, it loses all shock value. Like the ending of The Empire Strikes Back, who DOESN'T know its ending?
Someone told me I had to see it because there was a twist at the end. I guessed the twist well before it happened especially because I knew there was a big twist. I think I would've liked the movie better if I wasn't told there was a twist. I might have been able to guess it, but it would be more surprising because I still wouldn't have known anything about how it was going to end.

@@thebest12700 I have been fascinated with the historical Titanic for years and have enjoyed many of the movies based on it including James Cameron 's. However I agree that the fictional characters of Jack and Rose do detract from the stories of the genuine people who endured the tragedy. Surely their stories are compelling enough as in the portrayed in the 1950s British movie "A night to remember ". James Cameron 's movie does have a tragically haunting music score I will admit that complemented the images stirred many years ago in my imagination of the great passenger liner sinking into the Atlantic on that night in April 1912.
Yeah I can understand pulp fiction, but I guess don't go into it thinking it's this historical movie, I watched it with no knowledge of the movie, and it blew me away. The way the whole movie is wrapped up, the themes, the story, the entertainment factor, the soundtrack, and the whole vibe of the movie is incredible.
Exactly. It’s one thing that I go into a movie blind and dislike it. It’s another to watch a movie and punish it because of massive hype. We’re all guilty of it at one point or another though.
Part of Donnie Darko's popularity is that disaffected young people who don't fit in really connect with it. When you're a weird kid who's into weird music and books and stuff, it clicks really well. I don't say that disparagingly; that's who I was when I saw it, and why I liked it a lot.
I like the way it's put together too. It's not straightforward or linear and it doesn't spoonfeed you, but it has an internal logic and once you've unravelled it you can appreciate it from a different angle, but still enjoy it, perhaps even more. I don't mind that the guy who made the video didn't enjoy it though, it's not a film for everyone, so fair enough.
I was that person too, but for that same reason I think that’s why I resisted it. I felt like it was catering to a cliche and that made it less appealing to me. But all in all it’s not a bad movie.
I used to hate it but now I actually kinda like it. It's a very obscure movie and what I got out of it was it explores the interconnection of alternate timelines for each individual on some transcendant level. It has a very ambiguous plot ending though so it's really open to interpretation.
it is kinda funny though, I think sometimes we fall in love with the idea of a movie rather than the movie itself. i've rewatched some movies i remember being great, then realized, oh they actually kinda suck.
That happens in video games too. You can't recapture that initial playthrough. Instead the limitations and flaws become apparent as the novelty fades. Majora's Mask is one of the greatest videogames of all time, and hands down the best Zelda. But it is difficult to revisit, because the emotional journey isn't the same.
The Matrix was fantastic for the period of time it came out and it's still enjoyable to watch now for the fight scenes, but I can definitely understand why someone that didn't see it at that time can be completely disinterested now.
I worked at a movie theater when the movie came out. It blew me away personally. I would walk into random showings, just to see the audience reactions. They went crazy over the movie everytime. I never seen such a universal positive reaction for a film, ever. I think it had something for everyone. Even people who didn't really understand the story (which after talking to many people about it, were numerous) loved it.
The one movie that I never understood was Risky Business. People consider it Tom Cruise’s breakout movie but I consider Top Gun (which came out a couple years later) to be his breakout movie. And the plot of the movie is also really weird.
I was fortunate enough to be working at a movie theater when it came out and saw it the night before release for an employee viewing. It blew my Friggin mind! Not to mention I got to see it constantly after that AT WORK!
I saw it on vhs and was going through a heavy hallucinogen period so I connected on the level of "reality isn't real and i can almost see through it" it mirrored a lot of thoughts I'd had earlier in life about the fundamental nature of existence.
The ones that I disagree with the most were probably Citizen Kane, The Matrix, The Godfather Part II, Pulp Fiction and Donnie Darko. That said, James is so respectful and earnest that I can’t be mad at him. It’s just opinions after all. And hey, I’m with him on The Sixth Sense and The Dark Knight.
Wow, that's crazy you didn't feel a push to go see the Matrix. I remember very vividly the marketing push for the movie being surrounded around the question "What is the Matrix?" It was on billboards, in magazines, movie posters, and the trailers ended with Keanu Reeves asking the same question. My friends and I were asking one another what we thought the Matrix would be and it was super hyped. The LOTRs was also in hype-mode as well. An exciting time for fans of sci-fi and fantasy as they weren't super popular before that.
Titanic and Matrix, you kinda had to be there, and be captured up in the hype. Both of these blew my mind as a young teenager. It's the same as showing a 1970s Scifi(Starwars) to my 2012 kid, won't impress him.
Avatar. If there wasn't so much moustache-twirling comical evil, I think it would've been a much better story. As it stands, it feels like a heavy-handed sci-fi version of Ferngully that doesn't have the visual spectacle it did in 2009 to hold it up.
I only saw it once, in the theater. All I could think upon leaving was how I wasn't getting those 3 hours back. I hated that movie. I couldn't fathom any praise it received. But, thankfully people online have been pretty vocal about how ridiculous the plot is since 2009, so I didn't feel like I was crazy.
To be fair, I don't think Avatar would get most of the praise today that it did then. It was a visual spectacle of its time, the theatrical equivalent of an immersive theme park ride, and nothing more. Nobody really talks about it as a classic film, it was only groundbreaking from a visual standpoint.

Thinking about this, I think Citizen Kane, Donnie Darko, The Matrix and The Big Lebowski all have one thing in common: in order to truly appreciate the movie, you have to allow yourself to "be" the main character for the running time. People believe these are the best movies ever not because of the direct plot but because they feel the main character undergo a transformation, whether positive or negative, and that's reflected in the self. It's a journal of personal discovery into how someone different from you feels. If you watch these movies as a passive observer, you don't feel that internal conflict within yourself. That James watches horror films, where the cast is generalized into "the killer" and "the survivors," means he might have a predilection to being a passive observer. After all, you don't want to identify with a character in a horror movie too closely! But to "get" Donnie Darko, you have to spend an hour and change as a fucked-up, alienated teen looking deep at a cosmic horror. To "get" Citizen Kane, you have to feel each personal achievement turn ephemeral as soon as it enters your grasp, leaving your soul unfulfilled. If you just "observe" these characters, instead of "feeling" them, you can never truly experience them.
I'm not sure I agree. I've often been called very empathic. I struggle to watch things like the Walking Dead or Jessica Jones because of my ability to really put myself in the shoes of those people. However I find myself agreeing with him on a lot of the films on this list. I don't know if that really means anything about your point where it interacts with the world at large, but at least for me it rings hollow.
Hugo Everard - Now, that's interesting. Never? You never assume the main character's perspective? Like, at all? Most of my favorite films are a result of making me feel one with the main character along their journey. It's immersive empathy. It's like it becomes my journey, too.
This was an excellent video. The movie I had a mind blowing experience was the matrix. I had no expectations going into the movies that day and I think it was the sheer scale, video effects and twisting story. I had never been so impressed walking out. I thought about that movie for weeks after watching. Strictly my opinion.
I prefer Battle Royale. The story overall is more interesting, and the actual battle is done better. We get to see what everyone's doing, while also following the main characters' progress, rather than focusing purely on the main characters and not caring about the other "players" like in HG. Also, Katness, at least for me, isn't a likable character.
Never change, James. You are a good man, and you don't cave and sacrifice your ideas in order to appease everyone all the time. Thanks for the continued inspiration and videos.
Stitchlips94 right, he could be shitting out avgn videos because that's what gets insane views and what most his sub's actually watch but he keeps its real and uploads what he really wants to and gives avgn the time and love it deserves.
I hadn't seen Citizen Kane before and bought it on dvd. There was a second disc included that had a documentary about the major conflict between Wells and William Randolph Hurst. I liked it so much better than the actual film.
I agree, Titanic is really overrated. I thought the parts depicting actual history were far more interesting than the majority of the film revolving around the fictional characters, and would have preferred to see just those bits. It's obvious how much effort went into making the film look authentic. The sets and costumes are immaculate, and the special effects were quite good for their time, but for me, A Night to Remember remains the definitive film about the Titanic.
I agree with you. People who expect you to like that movie are evil. People who attack you for not liking Titanic are evil. People who like that movie are evil. People who like Titanic have no right to attack people who don't like that movie for not liking that movie because we all have to deal with opinions.

I grew up watching classic movies and love older films because of that. But that being said, I never liked Citizen Kane. When I saw the title of this video I definitely hoped he’d mention it, I was not disappointed.
I appreciate the level-headed and thoughtful criticism. Being able to identify the what works is just as important as explaining what you dislike about it. Most videos like these are opinionated attacks on the content they are “discussing”, or don’t even attempt to explain why they dislike it.
The matrix had two main things going for it besides the stylized cool factor. 1) it innovated special effects, so much so that there was a bunch of imitators and parodies after it. 2) The story of being in an artificial programmed world leading to real life water cooler conversations of if we're actually the Sims.
I found a King Arthur movie called "Merlin" that way. It follows the actual story of king Arthur closer than any other movie I've heard of, and it's not even actually about king Arthur. It's about Merlin. Great movie. Super long though. You really gotta dedicate an afternoon to it.

Gameplays For Days YT thought it was more of an event than a movie but what ruined it for me was hearing about the 4 sequels so I just sold it back to the store not worth having in the collection 😉

And everything afterwards seems to be built upon their ideas. And so...maybe if it weren't for them...we wouldn't have the quality of games, movies, fighters, players, etc...today.
You need to understand what makes something the greatest of all time. It's found in the concept.

It sucks anyway and the endings crap when hes run over by that tractor
My friend in elementary school ruined it for me. What a piece of shit.

Just take mdma that’ll help destroy your memory lol
Someone told me I had to see it because there was a twist at the end. I guessed the twist well before it happened especially because I knew there was a big twist. Pulp Fiction is awful...
James Cameron 's movie does have a tragically haunting music score I will admit that complemented the images stirred many years ago in my imagination of the great passenger liner sinking into the Atlantic on that night in April 1912.
titanic was sad
Yeah I can understand pulp fiction, but I guess don't go into it thinking it's this historical movie, I watched it with no knowledge of the movie, and it blew me away. The way the whole movie is wrapped up, the themes, the story, the entertainment factor, the soundtrack, and the whole vibe of the movie is incredible.
Exactly. It’s one thing that I go into a movie blind and dislike it. It’s another to watch a movie and punish it because of massive hype. We’re all guilty of it at one point or another though.
Exactly. Bottom line, don't go to movie school because you analyze a movie to the point off it not being fun anymore.
Part of Donnie Darko's popularity is that disaffected young people who don't fit in really connect with it. When you're a weird kid who's into weird music and books and stuff, it clicks really well. I don't say that disparagingly; that's who I was when I saw it, and why I liked it a lot.
Brilliantly put, mate
I like the way it's put together too. It's not straightforward or linear and it doesn't spoonfeed you, but it has an internal logic and once you've unravelled it you can appreciate it from a different angle, but still enjoy it, perhaps even more. I don't mind that the guy who made the video didn't enjoy it though, it's not a film for everyone, so fair enough.
Couldn't get in to it. Liked bits though.
Die hard is the best christmas movie.

That happens in video games too. You can't recapture that initial playthrough. Instead the limitations and flaws become apparent as the novelty fades.

Nobody really talks about it as a classic film, it was only groundbreaking from a visual standpoint.
nobody said that Avatar was a great movie, quite the contrary, financial success != great movie

I disagree with your fundamental premise. I also think using terms like "truly appreciate" makes you pretentious.
pretty sure James is an active movie watcher
I'm not sure I agree. I've often been called very empathic. I struggle to watch things like the Walking Dead or Jessica Jones because of my ability to really put myself in the shoes of those people. However I find myself agreeing with him on a lot of the films on this list. I don't know if that really means anything about your point where it interacts with the world at large, but at least for me it rings hollow.
I, legit, have never ever done this. I am going to watch some movies I've always wanted to like with this in mind. Cheers Toll Boss :)
