@@Jogwheel I've rewatched Big Hero 6 recently and, honestly, I think I would've preferred if the movie focused on Hiro going to that tech school instead of the superhero shenanigans. But it did have some impressive action scenes.
I had so much fun with this video! 1984 was such a concentrated flavor of movies that had unique tastes and all the flavors are overwhelmingly delicious! 1984 is in my top 3 favorite years of movie releases. I juggle the movies in 1984 and I can't decide on a favorite yet Ghostbusters and Terminator shine the most in my recent years
My favorite movie that should have gotten best picture: 'L.A. Confidential' hands down. But it came out the same year as 'Titanic' so it didn't have a chance.
It be great if you did a video like this, but with actors and actresses. It be interesting to see who you liked and who you would have preferred to have won.
Perhaps it's just me, but when I see a film is Oscar-nominated or has WON one, that means I am now FAR less-likely to watch the film. Things I despise tend to be winners.
One I'll never Agee with is crash. Watched it after it won to see what was all the hubbub was all about and it wasn't bad, it was well acted but not a best picture winner type of film.
When Return of the King won I think it was pretty well understood that it was there representing the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy. And that's definitely my favorite best picture movie.
Return of the King is my favorite best picture winner, still amazing that the third film in a fantasy series won best picture. Titanic absolutely was very deserving of its win and has become one of my favorite movies over the past 20 years. For the 2015 movies, Mad Max Fury Road should have won best picture. Nothing against spotlight, but mad max was more deserving of the best picture win. That movie had incredible word building, visual storytelling, and insane rewatch-ability.
Well, it definitely helped it was more like a really long movie split into 3 parts. Rather than the usual scenario of each movie being written separately. That kind of situation where you know for sure you're getting 3 movies is super rare. And sometimes they squander it anyway (Star Wars sequels).
I think Jame's view about the Oscars shows a maturing. I used to think the Oscars were this big deal, and got really mad when my fav film didn't win. When I got older, I realized that it's just people making these decisions. I use the Oscars now to catch Best Picture nominees that I may have missed if there wasn't an award show that did this.
I stopped watching and caring about the Oscars in 1998 after Shakespeare In Love beat out Saving Private Ryan for Best Picture. I knew that it was a total sham from that point on.
Fully agree on the list of nominees as a "recommendation list". Every year, I really enjoy watching through all of the Best Picture nominees, and even if I don't agree with the winner, I always find at least one new film that I might not have heard about or watched otherwise.
Boyhood was nominated for Best Picture in 2014 and I personally would have picked that. It was filmed over a period of 12 years, with every actor aging as the story does and you really see that growth in character and performance. Birdman is excellent, but to me (and I stress, TO ME), Boyhood deserved it more.
My list of films that I feel should have won best picture for each year of the 80's, which are now regarded as some of the best films ever made! 1980. The Shining 1981. Raiders of The Lost Ark 1982. E.T. The Extra Terrestrial 1983. Scarface 1984. The Karate Kid, Ghostbusters, or Gremlins....tough year lol 1985. Back to the Future....hands down! 1986. Aliens...my favorite film ever! 1987. Full Metal Jacket, Robocop, Predator, Lost Boys...another great year! 1988. Die Hard 1989. Batman or Lethal Weapon 2
So far I’ve watched Drive My Car, CODA, Belfast, King Richard & Don’t Look Up. The most deserving to me is Drive My Car and Don’t Look Up is the least deserving so far.
I am in the worst movie of the year camp when it comes to Don’t look up. Also I DO NOT think we should be using DONT in a formal title. So zero stars for that.
"Crash" winning best picture in 2005 was a complete joke. One of the worst to ever win the category. (Shakespeare in Love in '98 was also a bad choice.)
Moonlight is a film that I didn't have high expectations for going in, but left an impression on me that still gives me goosebumps whenever I think about it.
1994 was a great year for movies. Other than Forrest Gump and Shawshank Redemption, I thought Pulp Fiction could have won Best Picture. Lion King was also great.
I actually La nueva voz de MrBeast en español se me hace super extraña jajaja Ya estaba acostumbrada a la otra, pero igual amo ❤saw that hotel room underground in a cave on the news the other day; apparently some people got trapped down there somehow and survived off of what the previous inhabitants left down there.
Mostly agree with what you say but I will say that Amadeus is a brilliant film that deserved to win that year as much as I enjoy the other films from that year.
Great video, James. Can you do a list next of movies in hindsight weren't worthy of Oscar best picture wins or nominations. Crash comes to mind for me.
For me, when Saving Private Ryan lost out to Shakespeare In Love, it was a low blow. Was I, and am I bias about it? Most definitely. Is Shakespeare In Love a bad movie? Not at all. However, Saving Private Ryan is still the best war film I've ever seen, and to me it was a shoe in.
I actually think Fellowship of the Ring was a better film than Return of the King. I think they just didn't want to give the award to a fantasy movie when they didn't even know how the trilogy was going to pan out. So it made more sense to give the award to the series as a whole at its completion.
this video could have been five hours and I'd have sat there, content through the whole thing. hearing James talk about film is so calming, informative and insightful.
I really like the movie Rain Man with Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise, that won a bunch of Oscars including Best Picture. Also Titanic and Lord of the Rings were great
It's funny because that album isn't even well known (especially amongst non-Floyd fans). Dark Side Of the Moon, The Wall, etc are all so much more famous.
Shawshank was filmed where I live. The crew stayed at the hotel where my Mom was in charge of catering. She got me a part as an extra in the film. I'm one of the cops at the end, when they explain how he escaped.
Rocky has been talked about and been parodied so much that I feel people forget its stallons preformance that sells the movie I feel, you can tell he put everything he had in that movie
I think it's criminal that John Carpenter's The Thing (1982) didn't get even a nomination. It's one of the best horror movies ever made, and it's the psychological aspect of it that's the most terrifying, the gore is just a bonus.
The one movie that I never understood why getting so much praise is Shawshank Redemption. I mean imo is not bad but I wouldn't consider it a masterpiece.
Well, except Best Director, Best Score and Cinematography. No nominations either for Best Original Screenplay, or Best Actor for Harrison Ford, Best Actress for Karen Allen, and Best Supporting Actor for either Paul Freeman, Ronald Lacey or John Rhys-Davies.
my picks are: Rebecca, Casablanca, The French Connection, Rain Man, The Departed, The Artist and i'm hoping for Nightmare Alley or Licorice Pizza this year!

Will always say to this day that Anomalisa should had won over Inside Out. Including Best Actor and Best Actress nominations.
None of Satoshi Kon's movies got so much as a nomination, either, which I feel is an even bigger travesty.
As much as isle of I Love Dogs
Song of the Sea is brilliant. My 4 year old loves that. Meanwhile, I haven't even thought twice about Big Hero 6 since seeing it when it came out...
I juggle the movies in 1984 and I can't decide on a favorite yet Ghostbusters and Terminator shine the most in my recent years
What about Gremlins as well?
I've been saying for decades that Fiddler on the Roof should have won best picture. 100% agree with you, James!
What’s your favorite best picture winner?
The English patient winning over Fargo might be the biggest steal of the Oscar
Fargo is so trash though. And because of that movie people think thats what north Dakota is.
My favorite movie that should have gotten best picture: 'L.A. Confidential' hands down. But it came out the same year as 'Titanic' so it didn't have a chance.
He seems to be gradually picking up a natural speaking grammar from listening English-speaking in class, which is great.
James, you made my day when you mentioned Big Trouble in Little China....BEST MOVIE EVER!
It be great if you did a video like this, but with actors and actresses. It be interesting to see who you liked and who you would have preferred to have won.
Muito bom, seus vídeos são os melhores, muito obrigado por ainda continuar sendo o melhor youtuber que eu já vi.
Especially in a year with Brokeback Mountain. I distinctly remember that year being the year that people were legitimately angry about the Oscars.
@@HellecticMojo and Jack Nicholson felt that reaction in that ceremony.
@@HellecticMojo and Munich
If won because the ' so called' elites and Oscar academy wanted that narrative pushed not because it was the best movie.
"Grand Canyon" (1991) was a much better movie than "Crash" (2004).
Titanic is 25 years old this year. ;-)
LA Confidential is way better than Titanic
He is able to read at a speed that is ideal for his learning.
Just that one quote from shawshank gave me chills and goosebumps. Great movie.
Get busy livin' or get busy diein
Should have won over Forest Gump
One flew over the cuckoo's nest, Rocky... So many outstanding movies that nu-hollywood can only dream about
I think Jame's view about the Oscars shows a maturing. I used to think the Oscars were this big deal, and got really mad when my fav film didn't win. When I got older, I realized that it's just people making these decisions. I use the Oscars now to catch Best Picture nominees that I may have missed if there wasn't an award show that did this.
Usually though
The Best Picture is verrrry deserving
who is jame
I stopped watching and caring about the Oscars in 1998 after Shakespeare In Love beat out Saving Private Ryan for Best Picture. I knew that it was a total sham from that point on.
I never thought James would hype up Citizen Kane🤣
Fully agree on the list of nominees as a "recommendation list". Every year, I really enjoy watching through all of the Best Picture nominees, and even if I don't agree with the winner, I always find at least one new film that I might not have heard about or watched otherwise.
1954 from here to eternity won best picture, in reality rear window should've won.
As long as he stays focused in his studies, [This student] will improve steadily.
King Kong didn't win was the most shocking. I always presumed due to it being so well known that it would have won more then just best picture.
He has learned a lot of new vocabulary through the class readings and our lessons.
1980. The Shining
1981. Raiders of The Lost Ark
1982. E.T. The Extra Terrestrial
1983. Scarface
1984. The Karate Kid, Ghostbusters, or Gremlins....tough year lol
1985. Back to the Future....hands down!
1986. Aliens...my favorite film ever!
1987. Full Metal Jacket, Robocop, Predator, Lost Boys...another great year!
1988. Die Hard
1989. Batman or Lethal Weapon 2
For 1980, I’d go with The Empire Strikes Back.
@@hunterolaughlin I realized that soon after I put it down haha
@@ottoneiii4353 Raiders of the Lost Ark was nominated for Best Picture and should've won I think.
James, I love your work, but Don't Look Up is the least deserving nominee for Best Picture this year.
Well said. I personally couldn't stand it. It wasn't clever or funny, and it's definitely not in the class of best picture films lol.
‘Old’ should be best picture for sure
@@idontwritecomments m night isn't ever getting best picture going forward lol
So far I’ve watched Drive My Car, CODA, Belfast, King Richard & Don’t Look Up. The most deserving to me is Drive My Car and Don’t Look Up is the least deserving so far.
I am in the worst movie of the year camp when it comes to Don’t look up. Also I DO NOT think we should be using DONT in a formal title. So zero stars for that.
"Crash" winning best picture in 2005 was a complete joke. One of the worst to ever win the category. (Shakespeare in Love in '98 was also a bad choice.)
@Greta Thanos Wrong year, dude or dudette. He’s talking about the 2006 Oscars for movies of 2005.
Moonlight is a film that I didn't have high expectations for going in, but left an impression on me that still gives me goosebumps whenever I think about it.
Given James’s insight on movies, I think he should direct a really epic movie.
I love to see him well-behaved in my class.
1994 was a great year for movies. Other than Forrest Gump and Shawshank Redemption, I thought Pulp Fiction could have won Best Picture. Lion King was also great.
Wow, never realized how many great films came out in 94.
@@brandonjones3306 And why it was a hard decision too to pick best picture!
95 and 93 had better films.
@@alissa6 What did 95 have? Die hard with a vengeance and toy story? lol
These movie discussion videos never cease to entertain 😄👌
I am excited about [This student]'s potential and I can't wait to see how he will grow in the future.
The fact that Drive (2011) or Baby Driver didn't win is absolutely criminal. You definitely should have mentioned them.
Drive 2011 ....best movie ever.
Both are literally me
both are too stylistic for best picture
Mostly agree with what you say but I will say that Amadeus is a brilliant film that deserved to win that year as much as I enjoy the other films from that year.
Great video, James. Can you do a list next of movies in hindsight weren't worthy of Oscar best picture wins or nominations. Crash comes to mind for me.
When he is focused, he works very diligently.
I actually prefer Nightmare Alley, as far as what I've seen. I've yet to see CODA and King Richard.
He loves to participate when he knows the answer.
Love it when it’s just you talking bout something you care about.
One I ALWAYS disagreed with: Shakespeare in Love winning best picture over Saving Private Ryan.
Agree 100%
Lol.
Theres already so many war movies that won tho

I can see that [This student] has many strengths as a student.
I actually think Fellowship of the Ring was a better film than Return of the King. I think they just didn't want to give the award to a fantasy movie when they didn't even know how the trilogy was going to pan out. So it made more sense to give the award to the series as a whole at its completion.
He has demonstrated that he is able to learn new vocabulary quite quickly when he studies hard.
After a Long Day is so awesome to find a James video talking about movies. Fan since 2008.
Hmmm...the year 1985 is great! Back to the Future, Commando and stuff...but....The Color Purple should have won more stuff!
this video could have been five hours and I'd have sat there, content through the whole thing. hearing James talk about film is so calming, informative and insightful.
My favorite part of the Oscars is when one actor has a meltdown and slaps another. XD
just imagine how insane it is that jeff bezos could theoretically rent the most expensive hotelroom for 2000 million days straight (5480 years)
I always love your videos where it’s just you talking about things you love.
I really like the movie Rain Man with Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise, that won a bunch of Oscars including Best Picture. Also Titanic and Lord of the Rings were great
[This student] seems to be a very creative student.
I'm so glad these types of videos are coming back.
Interesting that Gigi won 8 Oscars and it is more known for its appearance on the album cover of Pink Floyd’s Ummagumma than the film these days.
It's funny because that album isn't even well known (especially amongst non-Floyd fans). Dark Side Of the Moon, The Wall, etc are all so much more famous.
The fact that he flew all the way to India for just for a 30 second clip really shows the dedication he puts into his videos. Mad respect for Jimmy
I haven’t watched it yet, but he’s definitely gonna agree with Rocky in 1976
Love your videos keep them coming made my day
Shawshank was filmed where I live. The crew stayed at the hotel where my Mom was in charge of catering. She got me a part as an extra in the film. I'm one of the cops at the end, when they explain how he escaped.
The Oscars lost a lot of credibility for me when I discovered that John Williams lost the Best Original Score award in 1980 to the film Fame.
John Williams has won 5 other Oscars and has been nominated almost 50 times. I think he’ll be okay.
its the same with modern gaming its all politics now
Rocky has been talked about and been parodied so much that I feel people forget its stallons preformance that sells the movie I feel, you can tell he put everything he had in that movie
Как же повезло людям которые попали в команду к mr beast
I think it's criminal that John Carpenter's The Thing (1982) didn't get even a nomination. It's one of the best horror movies ever made, and it's the psychological aspect of it that's the most terrifying, the gore is just a bonus.
It certainly should have gotten a nomination for best effects.
I love the movie. But its understandable it didnt get nominated for Best Picture. Its a great horror film but not Best Picture material
The real crime was deciding to release it against ET. They should have waited or _something._
It still blows my mind how young Topol was when he filmed Fiddler.
Surely “The Exorcist” should have won the Oscar in 1973?
The one movie that I never understood why getting so much praise is Shawshank Redemption. I mean imo is not bad but I wouldn't consider it a masterpiece.
A great video that sparks conversation and makes you think. It didn't win Best Picture, but RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK won other categories.
He always works very diligently when he is focused.
my picks are: Rebecca, Casablanca, The French Connection, Rain Man, The Departed, The Artist
and i'm hoping for Nightmare Alley or Licorice Pizza this year!
