In Angry Video Game Nerd episode 208, The Nerd opens up a can of worms and takes a gross out look back at the Earthworm Jim series! Often hailed as classics, The Nerd looks to find out if the original Sega Genesis games (or the 3D one for N64) still hold up, or, if they were simply a flash in the pan of the 90s.

Is there a chance we’re going to play the AVGN game you use as your title?
Oh my gah
I loved these games but they were SO HARD!!! I was actually thinking of revisiting them now as an older and wiser gamer haha
Fun fact: The manual to Earthworm Jim 2 contained a Table of Contents, Table of Continents, and a Contents of Table which listed all the screws and wood needed to build a table. They really dialed the absurdity up to 11 and eight year old me loved every minute of it.
That was not a Fun Fact.
Nice
@@TyroneMCR0161 it absolutely was
Are you trolling?
No table of incontinence though?😢
Seeing James put his elbow on the back of the couch and turn around to talk to the camera is a great AVGN classic call-back move
Absolutely. Reminded me of Little Red Hood in particular. His 'random game design' rant was also a callback to the 'Attack of the Mutant Penguins' randomness from the Jaguar episode! Love how he's making his past work for him!
It’s kind of like he’s taking us back…to the pas… I’ll see myself out

Which was also featured in Disney's Phantasia.
I came here to say this
But I'm pretty sure that's not Ride of the Valkyries

So technically the series ended with Jim dying/dead in the hospital

Jim 1 & 2 are some of the most creative and genius games I've ever played. If you're into surreal comedy and platformers it's a dream come true.
Basically the precursor of Crash Bandicoot if you think about it.
How would you describe the third game? 😅
The animation in EWJ remains exceptional.
Music/sfx, design, and even difficult gameplay (if you enjoy a challenge) are all beyond stellar, which is the only flaw people seem to give this (and a hilariously disappointing ending.)
The game is progressively hard because it chooses to be, not because of bad controls from the beginning like Top Gun. It's like people complaining about Resident Evil tank controls. Believe it or not, it just takes practice, but everything is consistent and clear so you can improve, which is why people still do speedruns and aren't complaining about broken controls, but with Earthworm Jim everyone knows how to platform so there's even less of a learning curve but more of a difficulty curve, which more games should have.
@@Goblin_Hands Agreed. This game was a joy to play from start to finish. Even after completing it many many times it managed to retain it's playability to me as a kid (and probably me as an adult if I was still a gamer)
@@diplamatikjuan3595 I must've replayed the second game on SNES almost 10 times when I was a kid.
Seeing everyone get older is rough, but he managed to keep the same spirit of the old content alive and well. That's no small feat.

I know it's unrealistic to expect the AVGN formula to remain unchanged for decades, but it is really nice to get an episode like this once in a while that feels like it could have been made back in the early days.
If you think James Is making any of these videos recently you’re living under a rock
@@mcmillz4 I thought it was him in front of the camera. Was he replaced by an AI?
He cgi'd the recceeding hairline too eh.
BRAIN!
i was thinking just that
I'm kind of surprised that he didn't mentioned "Andy Asteroids?" level. Music from that level was so catchy, it still just plays in my head occasionally.
I'm surprised that he didn't talk about how the guys who worked on the Sega version of Aladdin also worked on this game. Hence why it feels so smoothy animated and like a cartoon.
EWJ2 was hands down my fav childhood game, the salamander stage plays Moonlight Sonata. The menu song is an ear worm (haha) too. This game was the embodiment of “lol random *holds up spork*” of the 90s.
Hearing a 16 bit rendition of Moonlight Sonata is still quite a unique feeling for me (it’s one of my favorite piano pieces). And since the SNES and Genesis each had a unique sound to their music due to their different sound chips I feel like each version fits a slightly different mood.
The SNES version called that stage "Villi People" which is a nice little joke.
The music in the second level is modest mussorgsky - a night on the bare mountain not Richard Wagner's ride of the valkyries. Love your stuff James 😊
Literally the song in that segment of Fantasia 😂
Yes. Also the song transitions into "elevator music" cuz you're in "Heck" 👍
Correct
Thank you!
I'm glad someone else said it so I don't have to.
Man isn't it crazy how this series has been going on for almost two decades and is still getting massive viewer ship, 1.4M views in 8 days is impressive. Amoung TV shows, going this well for this long is rare. Amazing stuff.

I like how they basically tried redeeming themselves after the body horror in the intestine level so in the second game they had a level which is a land full of gourmet foods. It's like they're saving, sorry for grossing you out, fight a living steak instead."
You have to admit.
Naming the steak "Flamin' Yawn" was sheer genius.

this brought back so many memories. I loved these games as a kid and also the animated show.
The Neverhood series should totally be next, it's so creative and made by the same guy that did Earthworm Jim. Nerverhood is a 90's PC/PS1 Adventure game made of clay, Skullmonkeys is a platformer made of clay. They're as bizzare as Earthworm Jim and very very creative, holds up very well due to the clay animation.

Earthworm Jim is like a video game equivalent of an early 90s psychedelic cartoon. Yet another franchise that def couldn't make the 3D transition. Excellent episode!
That's why I love 2D, cuz there are just some things you can't transition to 3D very well.. I'll argue most 16 bit game franchises never transitioned well to 3D.
It could have easily worked as a cartoony FPS or ratchet and clank type game, it just wasn't built to be a collectathon.

I got Earthworm Jim for SNES maybe 2 weeks after release. Absolutely loved that game and still do. 90s absurdity at it's finest and it was glorious.
Great video as always! A quick correction, the music on "What the Heck" level is a rendition from Modest Mussorgsky's "Night on the Bare Mountain". Coincidentally, this work is also featured on Fantasia!

Do you know what the piece is about? I've definitely heard it on old cartoons here and there
That's right!
I thought I heard a little melody from Night on the Bare Mountain in this review! Thank you for the awesome fact
And later it changes into a torturous elevator music, that's why people are screaming.
Earthworm Jim definitely felt more like a Genesis game than a Super Nintendo game to me.
Not to me but I owned a SNES and not a Genesis
Snes version played and sounded better i had both. Or at least i prefer the snes version.also it had more levels.

@@zeroa69 The Genesis version has another level, intestinal distress, that got cut from the SNES version.
Well, at least SNES version win over Sega on Earthworm Jim 2, since there's button to switch the weapons so if you got Bubble Gun, then it's not disaster. This button is not available in Genesis and makes the last level harder
I've been waiting over a decade to hear what avgn had to say on earthworm Jim 3d.
it was the most anger I had ever felt towards a video game when I was a kid back when you would rent video games on the weekends. That psychrow boss fight was easily the most frustrating experience I've ever had in a video game.
16 Bit Earthworm Jim suffers from the infamous "Battletoad effect": it starts with the game being what you actually want to play but quickly devolves into a frustrating nightmare. 17:46 sums it up perfectly.
I love how James keeps adding small but original gags even after the years, keeping it fresh
