    The Oscars talking shit about animation, saying how kids love it and adults suffer through it, has got to be the BIGGEST middle finger to the animation industry and community. Animation is a medium filled with powerful storytelling and artistically amazing visuals made through hard work. Many of our most beloved movies of all time are animated from How To Train Your Dragon to Into The Spider-Verse. Yes, kids can find these films enjoyable but so can adults too. Animation is for everyone and anyone and no one should miss out on it.

      There isnt a single thing you could do in live action, that you couldnt do better with animation, it is that simple.
      No hate on any of the talented actors working on live action (or stage, for that matter) productions by the way, but anything you can act, you can animate, and animation will always allow for a more expressive, more creative portrayal of your story because it isnt bound by reality the way real actors are.

Like, they’re just reading from a script? That’s all voice actors do, if you hate English dubs then don’t attack the voice actors involved, they do nothing but speak, grunt, and talk for their jobs, and they need to get paid, too.

    If you want to know more reasons why the Oscars have a huge bias hatred to animation, Beauty and the Beast from 1992 is one of the main reasons. Turns out from a tweet from Variety, it turns out the Academy were concerned that a animated movie got nominated for Best Picture and that there's a potential it could win Best Picture so they wanted to make the "Best animated feature" category to prevent it from happening, and Chicken Run convinced them to do so (Heck back than, some critics claimed it was "Best Picture" nomination material).
    In other words...
    *THE ACADEMY IS AFRAID OF ANIMATION WINNING BEST PICTURE... or just animation in general, so they just shit on it the whole time*

      The thing people don't understand is that the best picture Oscar awards the producer(s) of the film, not the director who is the person responsible for the quality of a film.
      That's why the best picture category is so meaningless, in 1973, when The Godfather won best picture they didn't rewarded Francis Ford Coppola, who was responsible for all the decisions that lead that film to be so good (casting Marlon Brando and Al Pacino, shooting the film in dark lighting, focusing on the family drama, changing aspects from the book along with Mario Puzo to make it more cinematic, etc.) and instead rewarded Albert S Ruddy, an asshole who wanted Coppola fired from day one, and if it had been for him, the movie would've been a cheesy gangster flick starring Robert Redford as Michael Corleone.

    It's a huge shame that Disney as a corporation is so despicable that it leaves a smudge on a lot of their best recent movies, Encanto being a prime example. The creators of many of Disney's movies genuinely put a lot of care and effort into what they create, but still have to face being chained to their corporation, and victories that they deserve feel bittersweet at best because we know the corporate executives j**k off to those wins at the same time and don't truly care about the effort put into it. And with the Academy shamelessly shitting on animation the way they do and Disney not saying anything about it, it's clear that they just mooch off the money and fame of it all while the creators suffer the ridicule and poor treatment.
    At least we can all agree it's better that Encanto won rather than Raya and the Last Dragon. Like, can you freaking IMAGINE how that would've gone down?

      right? i recently had a friendly debate with one of my friends about why i think a lot of what disney puts out IS worthwhile. specifically the animation. at the end of the day, those movies are crafted by artists and it is a beautiful product of team work, talent, long hours, hard work. i know frozen is almost universally hated now bc of the mass marketing and people didn't love frozen 2, but if you watch the making of frozen 2 documentary on disney+ it is really cool to see the individual people and their families behind such a massive production. these are just individual artistic talented people and what they make is beautiful.

    Animation gets it pretty rough in the Oscars, but you know what genre gets it even worse?
    Horror. It sucks that some genuinely fantastic horror movies like Hereditary and The VVitch don't get the recognition they truly deserve, whether it be editing, acting, or screenplay. Horror is a legit movie category and some of the most critically acclaimed movies of the past few years have been in horror.

    • @WritingGeekNL
      @WritingGeekNL 2 года назад +23

      Animation definitely has it worse than Horror in my opinion.
      Sure, good Horror movies don't get nominated for stupid reasons. But at least they don't nominate awful horror movies like Saw or something, and then try to explain that the movie is a genuine work of art with great acting, themes and horror.
      Like, animation fans had to endure a Boss Baby nomination over movies like A Silent Voice or Your Name.
      Also, half of the work that goes into animation don't have a category at the Oscars. Like Best Voice Actor, or Animation Director (since that's very different to Directing Live Action).
      And before someone says there shouldn't be a Best Animation Director category. There are also two different categories on Screenplays. Because adapting and original are obviously two entirely different beasts to tackle.

Whether it was hand drawn, 3d drawn, filmed on print or filmed digitally. How did it make you feel? Does it leave you with anything? Does it inspire you? Does you remind you of good memories? Bad? Thats the beauty of any film making and refusing to acknowledge that just based on how its made does not lend any credit to their opinions. I do love seeing second hand the sharing of all those acceptance speeches that matter, and those should be the focus anyways to be honest. This makes it the first foreign animation to beat Hollywood at the box office, without massive marketing or big name celebrities attached to it, and it wasn’t even out in America until 2021. I still think The Mitchells vs The Machines deserved the Oscar for Best Animated Feature over Encanto. Now I don't think Encanto is bad, it's a good movie, but TMVTM has a lot more passion put in it, both style and story wise. It came from a group of people who love animation and tried to push the medium, and creating a unique, fun experience with a very heartfelt story that is based on real life experiences.
    I feel like the Oscars don't understand that it's not about popularity, or that it caters to a one, specific audience. Animation specifically, is a medium that made for everyone period. It should be respected as an art form, just like film.

    The Oscars are nothing but a slap in the face to truly deserving film makers and art...and the irony that they banned an actor who played an Oscar from The Oscars. I'm glad the Best Animated Feature presentation got the uproar response that it did. Animation isn't just for kids. Walt Disney created Disneyland for the young and the young at heart...well, the same can be said about animation. I mean, look at Disney's Black Cauldron and Hunchback of Notre Dame, just take a good look at those two movies and tell me that movie is "just for kids". Same for DreamWorks' The Prince of Egypt...is that a kids movie? Yeah, that's what I thought..it's for everyone! It's something both kids and adults can understand what's happening and the moral.
    They're the same people who wouldn't want to watch a Nicktoon like Avatar the Last Airbender because to them at first glance, it's a "kids show" despite it bringing up not so kid-friendly topics. Never judge a book by its cover. There is nothing wrong with an adult watching an animated show or movie and getting deep into thought as to what it portrays

      Honestly, what determines "being made for kids" is a bit in flux right now. For so long, we've patronized our kids by assuming they're stupid and deciding that shows or movies that talk about serious subjects are "not for kids." Look, I'm all for saying that animation is a medium not just relegated to kids entertainment, but we also need to be careful about saying certain films are or are not for kids. Avatar and Prince of Egypt tackle serious subjects, but they do so in a way that is respectful of how kids think and process information. It opens the door to more serious conversations we should be having with our kids and does so in a visual medium to help begin understanding what these ideas mean. However, most parents don't want to have conversations with their kids at all, so, here we are. Animation is a medium we should be recognizing more for kids and adults. But more importantly, we need to see kids as capable of learning so much so that we can continue using media to make our messages to kids and adults more significant.

    The one thing that really ground my gears was, as a big James Bond fan I knew there would be something to do with the James Bond series. 60 years of Bond, ya know one of the actors walks on stage to introduce a little clips show of all the Bond moments. But no what we get is 3 sports stars? To introduce the clip show of all the Bonds. And then they forget to mention George Lazenby as an actor who played James Bond officially. That's not on them that's on the degenerate who doesn't know how to use Google who wrote the script. And then the clip show they presented could have been made by anyone who has a basic knowledge of an editing software, with Live and Let Die playing over the top of it. And then they didn't even do a tribute to Roger Moore or Sean Connery? I mean all they had to do was say something like "RIP to Connery and Moore the two most iconic 007s they were great at James Bond etc etc". It's like the Academy can't just get it right.

    • @hunterolaughlin
      @hunterolaughlin 2 года назад +20

      To be fair, their tributes to James Bond and The Godfather is still better than the parts where Amy Schumer and Regina Hall making unfunny jokes. I’d rather have a “poorly done” tribute than another set of bad jokes.

    This year’s ceremony really really sucked, but watching Jane Campion finally win Best Director, after so many years of stellar work and breaking so many barriers, was truly satisfying. I would say the same about Drive My Car’s win, but of course they had the audacity of disrespecting and interrupting Hamaguchi’s speech.

      That pissed me off to no end! He was clearly pausing to think more and almost got played off THREE times! Also, can we acknowledge that “Drive My Car” was never going to win Best Picture this year because 1) it was already going to (deservedly so) win Best International Feature Film and 2) they already gave it to “Parasite” so it’s not going to *another* film not in English this decade. Argh!
      Also, “The Worst Person in the World” should’ve had the Best Picture slot than “Don’t Look Up” had. As much as I admire the message of the movie, that movie was a waste of Grade-A talent and good satirical material, but it should’ve gone to another movie. But God forbid we have *two* movies NOT in English nominated for Best Picture! Double argh!
