Nothing but Trouble is a 1991 American black comedy horror film directed by Dan Aykroyd in his directorial debut, and written by Aykroyd, based on a story by his brother Peter. Chevy Chase and Demi Moore, John Candy and Aykroyd.

I remember seeing this as a kid and thinking it was just something I made up for years because I couldn’t imagine it being real
I was four years old when I first saw it, one of the earliest movies I saw.....it was definitely like a nightmare came to life on screen. Then I saw it again years later on Comedy Central and was like, "oh yeah, this really happened"
Me too! I think I must have caught part of it on tv, because Dan Aykroyd's prosthetic makeup haunted my nightmares for years
I had this same thing happen to me with the movie "Saturday the 14th". I saw it once when I was 6, and then again when I was 32. I remember being like, "oh shit it was real".
I seen it multiple times as a kid and didn't know the name for years, hunted it down later on. Still love it.
Same. It traumatized me.
One thing people can't deny about this movie, it's not boring. If boring is the worst thing a movie can be, then this movie is most certainly not boring.

It honestly might be the least boring movie ever made.
It's maybe the least entertaining movie I've seen. Interesting yes, entertaining no. It could've been cut down to a really good 20 minute short film without losing anything.
The reason I think the film is boring is because the film seems bored with itself. It was clear that Aykroyd was more interested in the characters played by himself and Candy but that doesn't mean that you skimp on the parts of the story not involving them but that seems to be what happens.
@@DiabloSandwich59 yeah the characters become 2 dimensional verrrrry quickly upon entering Valkenvania. I like the movie personally but I think this movie needed a longer cut and better written protagonists. The Brazilians were so pointless and flat and should have been written into the whole script imo because once they leave, the leads become background characters.
This movie had a big impact on me as a kid. I absolutely loved this movie, same with Beetlejuice. This is definitely a classic.
Dude, this is Dan Aykroyd's masterpiece. He should have been allowed to make more films like this immediately after. It really doesn't deserve the hate it received.

That moment that Chevy compliments Dan, and he looks so bashful is just a nice moment.
Dan Aykroyd has acted in/ wrote some of the strangest comedies ever. His weird disposition makes his works shine. This, Dr. Detroit, Neighbors, Coneheads, My Stepmother's An Alien, etc..A unique talent. For lovers of the strange in comedy.
I love this movie. I was a freshman in high school when it came out on vhs; my girlfriend at the time’s parents owned a convenience store/movie rental place & their house was directly attached to it. So we could watch whatever the latest movie was. I remember watching this & both of us being like “what the hell did we just see?”

My exact experience too. I described it as the movie with the hot dog train to find it on google last year. I’m pretty sure akryd described it on ROgan last year and it jogged some very vague memories.
I did the exact same thing with freaked, genuinely thought I'd dreamt it and no one believed it was a film 🤣
This movie looks exactly what you think you'd get when you leave Aykroyd alone with a typewriter, a terrifyingly huge pile of cocaine, and no one around to stop him. I need to check it out

This movie traumatized me as a child, & I've only remembered it in nightmarish flashes. I thought it might've been something I made up, but seeing this in my recommendeds... My heart dropped and pulse raced IMMEDIATELY lmao, & all those nightmares came back!! Hopefully watching this will erase them!!

I completely forgot they were in the movie, I watched it tonight and humpty hump and tupac showed up out of nowhere lol
I absolutely loved this movie as a kid... it was crazy wierd and visually nauseating but so much fun to watch. It took real balls to make this... luckily Akroyd had a low hanging set.

This was a movie I saw ONE TIME EVER when I was a kid and it disappeared from reality, to the point where it became one of those distant memories that felt more like a dream. Then it finally got reaired on cable in, like, 2009 and it blew my mind that it was actually a real movie.
You perfectly captured my exact thought.
I remember seeing this in the theater with my family. I LOVED every moment of it and was shocked to discover my family absolutely hated it. Thanks for giving this misunderstood masterpiece the credit it deserves.
Definitely a childhood favorite. I remember loving the mansion the most out of this film growing up. I'm glad it's starting to shine again.
Watching this just makes me think of Alex Winters 'Freaked' (1993). Now THATS obscure comedy at its best

I’m very glad I kept all my old cassettes, CDs, DVDs, and in some cases, VHS, Beta, and vinyl. all the stuff that has gone digital is being censored, edited, or otherwise “cancelled” so it’s nice to have analog/hard copies of that stuff.
And, when I consider the direction at which the world is headed and the rate that things are going, I suspect that within 20 year’s time, all of the movies, films, books, etc... that we grew up with will be considered verboten by “the state.”
(actually, “20 years time” might be a generous time frame)
When you said Dan Aykroyd could have been a great director if he had more chances I started picturing it. Great observation. Even if his ideas don't land for everyone, he's so passionate and creative that he could have made Terry Gilliam type flicks that are funny while also being original.
Hollywood doesn't even want to let ONE Terry Gilliam make his movies, they were never gonna go for another Terry Gilliam.
This is without a doubt a love or hate movie. No in-between. The movie is all over the place and certainly has a special charm to it that I absolutely love.
This and “ Funny Farm” are just incredible movies!

My favorite thing about John Candy's performance is his portrayal as a GOOD cop. Watch his behavior and attitude in both his stop of Chase and Baldwin. He conducts himself with professionalism and courtesy, but never lets his guard down. Also, his squad car is freaking badass.
My twin brother and I watched this with our older siblings when we were kids. It creeped us out a bit at first, but we loved/still love it. “The Addams Family meets Tales From The Crypt”.
This was always one of my favorite films from back when I was young. Thanks for making this film and defending it's honor because it truly is a gem.
One of my favorite 90's movies. I always recommend to people when they are wanting to watch something "different" 100% unique, and it sticks with you. I wish Akroyd made more movies. Thanks for covering this.

Absolutely a wild coincidence, for those who don't know the influential hip-hop band Digital Underground was in this movie (Humpty Dance among other songs) and one of the founders, Shock G passed away today.

I was in Hollywood when this came out visiting relatives, so I decided I'd make this my movie to see in the famous Grauman's Chinese Theatre. I wasn't blown away by it, but didn't think it was that bad, either. As I recall, I saw an afternoon show on a weekday but it was still in its first couple of weeks of release. Even so, there were maybe four other people there at the same time. I'd be interested in seeing outtakes or extended/cut scenes if any existed.
One of my favorite Dan Aykroyd movies! I just love it at the very end when he’s on the news with Chevy Chase’s ID and says SEE YA SOON BANKER!

Part of being an artist of any substance is creating things that most people wont get or like. Its terrible for the studios that finance it, but its awesome for the few who can appreciate something original and ambitious without its soul being edited out for mass consumption.

It's soul ? This had no soul. It was written and designed to apply to preteen toilet humour. They played to the gallery of lowest common denominator.

Dan Akroyd needs to release a director's cut of "Valkynvania"
I want to see his original vision since apparently they gave him carte blanche and did whatever he wanted... Until it was released and then cut most of the gore.

Things will never feel like the way they did back in the 80s 90s and even the early 2000s.
I loved this movie. “The Same Old Song” video is fantastic.
that was fun. But overall the concept did not work for me. I think the makers wanted to derive humor from putting people in a distressing situation but it failed to generate the laughs. You actually kind of feel sorry for them. And the whole situation feels rather irritating if not dangerous and the narrative feels clumsy. A comedy has to work with situation and presenting weird oddball characters is just not enough. The situation has to be funny and its not. I mean I am not sure people being minced to meat and bones can generate laughs. Therefore this movie has big problem with the tone.
I give this movie is 5. The only redeeming factor is Demi Moore. And the scene where she and the lead actor escape with sleeping on each others shoulders gives you a sense of relief. Overall this movie fails on all levels. Its premise where it tries to generate humor from a situation where the group is trapped by a lunatic family is problematic. Secondly even the premise with all the oddball characters and the different situations is just not funny. It feels mean spirited and irritating.
I always loved just how weird this film was. I still quote the line "In an ambulance, got a chance. In a hearse, got to be worse!" I consider it a classic.

It seems that if you saw this when you were a kid you don't think so negatively about it. To this day it's one of those movies that belongs on my own personal "must see movies" list.
Kids tend to like almost anything, and internalize it as well. Easy to please.

This truly is a classic, it is real horror to drive through a small town and miss a stop sign.
This is a great movie, a perfect example of early 90’s over the top funny horror films. Dan Ackroyd and Chevy Chase were awesome in everything they did, especially when working together. This and Spies like Us were a couple of my favorite movies in the 90’s
This is a truly strange movie but the most amazing thing is the sets they built to make this movie. We won't see stuff like this in the future practical effects in the movie alone garners a watch.
I hope you do a look back at Stay Tuned. An overlooked comedy where John Ritter and his character's wife get sucked into a TV hell.

Sweet Jesus, the set designers for this film deserved an Oscar.
Really great, even-handed take on this film. I saw this in the theaters when it opened. No one in their right mind could come out of it remotely thinking it was a "good" movie by any stretch, but it's always, as you've stated "stayed with me" and I revisit every so often. Always the same result. Cuts not withstanding, it's just had about half a dozen wrong turns, each of which could have massively improved the result. At it's core concept, I've always felt this movie was the seed of something that could have been if nothing else a phenomenal cult classic.
I'm kinda surprised at how many dislike this movie, I absolutely love it! This movie is hilarious and honestly with all the different stories going on at once make it epic! Underrated if you ask me.

@@gkroll8467 I'm pretty sure I can find ONE thing in any movie that's not needed, necessary or funny. But IMO, it doesn't hurt anything & still added value to the plot and storyline as the female (drag character of Candy) sought out love/marriage to Chevy. Guess we'll have to agree to disagree.

So many elements of this film just make it so memorable for me:
• the odd story by Dan Aykroyd
• the chaotic behind the scenes
• my 2pac/ digital underground fix
• Chevy Chase being so disinterested
All add up to a strange yet enjoyable chaotic mess that never ceases to amaze me.

I prefer to think that there's no actual connection. He's an old school justice of the peace. Making him a cannibal who forces others to unwittingly be cannibals might be 'satirical' but it's hardly true to the character's sincerely righteous anger that others aren't as serious about being 'law-abiding' as he is

10:19 - You can tell how kindhearted and humble Dan is, he's thankful for Chevy's comment, but he's also VERY uncomfortable, and it's almost like part of him doesn't feel it's true.
New cuts of films are all the rage right now, Dan Akroyd should release a new cut of the film called "Valekenvania"
I remember my parents renting it on VHS when I was a kid. We all sat down to watch it and within 10 min they were like "NOPE! Not for you, go to your rooms and play!". Of course, we kids pitched a fit. Haven't seen it since. Will have to check it out.
Similar events played out for my sister and I, but my parents didn't care so much and it became one of those movies I'd watch when it would come on hbo or whatever, but it's just weird.. funny, disturbing, and weird.

I saw parts of this movie when I was a kid, visiting my cousins house. They were watching it and I had no idea what it was. I've wondered about this movie ever since. I really got to sit down and watch the whole thing for myself one of these days.

With just this one movie Ackroyd proved he IS a great filmmaker and a super underrated character actor.
Definitely one of those movies that “stuck with me”. I watch it again from time to time. Always fun. They could definitely reboot this too.
I wasn't expecting this today but knowing me and my undying love of all things Aykroyd, I knew you would come back to this movie and talk about it. I think it is an unique and clever movie that uses elements from American life (granted....they are the most extreme versions of those elements but still) and I still have the images of the Starlog magazine issues that talk about this movie, and I can definitely say that Aykroyd is my spirit animal given how warped my mind-set is. The original poster art for this movie is EPIC and I can see someone using it as a Goosebumps cover. Chevy being a bad apple goes without saying, but yes i'd pay to see the Aykroyd cult of this movie since I know it exists somewhere. Dan and Chevy are going to be appearing in another movie together sometime this year.
That film is definitely out there. It was my understanding that Dan was very inclusive in terms of creating the set pieces . The cast and crew loved working with him. It’s sort of a shame he never directed anything else.

It's impressively shocking how much detail they went into the props and set pieces. And yeah, apparently the entire crew loved Dan even though he was a first time director because they wanted to be part of something weird.

This is one of those movies I could rewatch several times, not sure why I love it so much.
Love this movie! I was once offered Ants on a log in a dinner party and I shouted "You guys ara fans of Valkenvania too!?" They had never seen the movie, they were genuinely making and eating that celery appetizer for decades, I had no idea it was a real thing, I thought it was an invention of the movie!

John Candy is great in it. It's one of his best performances in the dual roles. He makes a strong leading man and a great looking woman, pulled off mute!

The film only being released on DVD once is one thing, but it only being available in full screen when it was shot in wide screen is inexcusable.
My copy was borrowed and never returned but it was a 2 movie set including spys like us.
That was probably 10 years ago and i have yet to cross another copy.
The amazon 1080p version looks almost as good as 4k hdr
I remember the arguments I had over fullscreen, specifically because its prevalence meant some movies just weren't released in their native aspect ratio on home media AT ALL. But people would just whine that they hated black bars. They were pretty sore once their TVs changed shape, and they got stuck with a bunch of black pillars.
All movies are shot in widescreen, depending on your exact definition of what a "movie" is. But anything released in theaters. For the home market, pan and scan was generally what they did to avoid the black bars at the top and bottom of your screen. My Dad rented this for me when I was out with Chicken pox in the 7th grade . For 30 years now I thought if my ship ever comes in I’m totally getting a pop up , pickle firing condiment train .

i got nothing but fond memories of this film. I'm also from south jersey where this film is supposed to take place, we spent years driving around the pine barrens looking for the junkyard. love this film

You have no idea. I saw this at my grandparents' house back in the early-mid 90s and have been trying to figure out what film it was and if it actually existed since then.
Honestly, I was beginning to think it was just some kind of fever dream. Now I have to watch this again.

It was a film ahead of its time. I watched it as a kid and i didnt get most of the humor aside from the simple slapstick schticks. As an adult now, i LOVE this movie and dare a studio to make a film as original, bizarre, anndfunnt.

This is one of my favorite cringe movies and one that could never be replicated or replaced
