This was an intresting Green Lantern upload because i just bought vol 1 and 2 of the omnis. Now...what got attention was when you mentioned the show 'Have Gun, Will Travel'. I have that dvd series and have been watching it! It was a different time back then!
I also have Green Lantern’s oath memorized (of course). Love the Silver Age. I have the first four Green Lantern Archives, then the rest of the Silver Age run in the original comics books. In the Silver Age, DC updated several characters like Green Lantern and Hawkman to have science fiction origins instead of mystical origins. (The one thing I appreciate about the fourth Indiana Jones movie is that it reflected that comic book change in the 1950s by having an SF plot instead of a mystical plot.)
One of my favourite sets of omnis. Gil Kane was definitely the greatest, I would love to see them release a cover book of Gil Kane's Marvel work. The yellow bit was daft but they are comics ... I mean surely he could have used his ring to control other things to stop the yellow rockets etc (without the ring actually attempting to do it). Best not ponder these things too much. They were still wonderful stories. I could never understand why they changed the Green Lantern where he ended up quitting his job, perhaps some desperation with the sales ? and yes, they should have continued the SA Green Lantern forever.
Yes, the Silver Age GL certainly came to an odd end. Gil Kane was amazing. The first issue of Marvel’s Warlord of Mars is still one of my favorite single issues of any comic book because he drew it so perfectly.
Of course it was the Spectre… always have to go with Green! Holy crap, that volume is huge. I really need to read some of the older stuff. Great overview!
I did a short philosophy series on Green Lantern. Easily both my favorite DC set of characters in the form of Sinestro and Guy Gardner. My dad was obsessed with Hal Jordan, but I more liked Alan Scott. You can make fun of his powers if you want, but he plays like a good guy version of a bloodless Dracula.
If you look up the etymology of Pie Face as a racist slur, it cites GREEN LANTERN comics as the likely origin, noting the round shape of the face. This might indicate it came from an artist's short-hand reference, although even so ... There is apparently a single episode of HAVE GUN, WILL TRAVEL, or PALADIN, in which Richard Boone's titular character is involved in helping Hey Boy out of some difficulty and they go to Hey Boy's residence, where we find, of course, an actual apartment and a wife and so on, and Paladin gets slightly woke when Hey Boy's real name is used, etc. This wasn't really a feather in the show's cap, or a buried ace up the sleeve to be more appropriate to the character, because it merely emphasized the casual, unconsidered racism permeating the show. Just as another quirk, they had a black character helped by Paladin once. I get this information not from memory but from a friend who's post-literate and a TV addict.
Gil Kane's style stands out, its something I've always liked. The Sword of the Atom rainforest fantasy adventures, and his Superman where he evolved Brainiac are some of my favourite DC comics too.
@@michaelk.vaughan8617 they did indeed reprint Sword of the Atom, its well worth hunting down a copy. Contains the full miniseries and the sequel specials.
I was never a DC fan. I much preferred the Marvel chars and stories. Green Lantern was the only DC stuff I followed just because I enjoyed Gil Kane's art. I absolutely loved the Green Lantern/Green Arrow run with the fantastic art from Neil Adams when I was in college in the 70s.
I think Geoff Johns retconned the origin so that Abin Sur had become very ill after confronting a yellow hued entity that embodied fear called Parallax. Abin Sur was on the verge of death after his encounter with Parallax and crash landed on Earth. Carol Ferris became Silver Sapphire after she encountered the alien race Xamerons (hmm who do they sound like?). I really prefer the sleek elegance of the original Silver Age design of Green Lantern's costume. I hope you review Darwyn Cooke's series, New Frontier, which prominently featured Hal Jordan and it's story evokes what makes the Silver Age of DC Comics so great.
In John’s retcon, Atrocitus (the Red Lantern) killed him. Abin Sur was transporting him as a prisoner, but Atrocitus managed to make him “fearful,” and then was able to mortally wound him, after which they crashed. I think you’re right about the Parallax encounter, but I think that’s one of the other origin stories (there have been a few, and I’m not as familiar with the older ones). I’ll need to check out the New Frontier… never heard of it!
Green lanterrn is suchgreat science fantasy. could make a great movie. lean in on the strangeness. so much DC silver age is pure fantasy, like adam strange, doom patrol, metal men. thats the cinematic universe they need. their major characters do better as solo stories.
So where did Barry Allen fit in with all this ? And wasnt Bruce Lee part of this ? Ohhh that's the Green Hornet 🤣 I'm so confused ! It's 60F here today (it is winter).

@MediumJohnSilver I'm sure you think you are making things clear (lol).... let me google it.... Ok, after a google search I learn that Eskimo Pie is an icecream and this is were the nickname Pieface came from (sounds like DC's BS to me). I also learn Pieface is how Americans used to called Asians, it was an insult for their round/flat faces (there goes another bit of my remaining innocence, my fault for asking.. I wonder what colorful name they have for my country). Still, I appreciate they keep the name, I know this are 50's/60's stories and I want to read them like they were originally publish, this also means uncensored.
Great video and THANK YOU for saying Hal Jordan was an abused character! As a fan, his treatment has been almost painful at times.

I certainly wish DC would finally reprint the Silver Age Hawkman. Alas, they are too lame. I might have to pony up for the archives.

Is the art actually oversize format?? I remember the Adam Strange Omnibus having art smaller than the original (with huge white border all around).
I have both them Omni's, still hoping for a continuation bronze age omnibus or two.
That would be great! I’m not going to hold my breath waiting for DC to publish them though.
Me neither, they're not too good on the continuation of books. I also want a bronze age Legion and Flash series to complement my silver age ones.
