I encountered the Legion of Super-Heroes at the ideal time - as a ten year old boy in 1964, reading their stories in Adventure Comics shortly after they had become the main feature, with a Superboy reprint as the backup feature. It was one of the few monthly titles that DC published (other comics were on an annual schedule of six to eight issues). Poor Mon-El, though. Spending a thousand years in the Phantom Zone without even a deck of cards to pass the time.
Mon-El has had some tough times. Perhaps he hit his lowest point on the Supergirl TV show where he was initially portrayed as an annoying bro from space.
My first comic was Superman Man of Steel number 6 (the ending to the byrne's origin story), there I learn about the Crisis and got really into the multiverse. Over the years I started reading the old JLA/JSA anuals and also the Barry/Jay Flash crossovers, that eventually led me to Superboy and the Legion... aaand this week I went all in, I ordered the silver age omnibus for my first read of the Legion (I just turned 40 so my experience will be somewhat similar to yours). I find my self ignoring the new stuff and going further and further back in time for comics.
Legion of Superheroes was always my favorite DC stories. I obviously wasn’t born as they were coming out, but I loved them still. And I read most of the original ones. Mon-El was one of my favorite characters. -T
There's some amazing editions you have on your shelf, couldn't help but notice The war of the worlds leather bound edition?.. & the Sherlock Holmes set..very nice.
When I was young there was a ratty old second hand book shop, amongst the piles of books were two boxes with comics in. Some had three or four prices written on them in felt tip, retraded again and again, it was here I first discovered the Superboy and the Legion. DC really let the team down and havent looked after them or their fans, its a rich back catalog I'd love to see in collected editions.
I could watch story time with MKV every day of the week. This was a wonderful true story, full of drama with coming of age elements and literary references. There's even a subtle political message weaved in. Bravo!
Between you and Shelly I never have to watch a Steve Donoghue video. I get enough of him from you two. 🤣 I love the upset old lady story. She's an icon.
Another great video. I enjoyed hearing about your introduction to the Legion, which has been a favorite of mine for a long time. My own discovery of the Legion falls between yours and Steve Donoghue's. I read the Silver Age stories from the beginning, but in reprint issues in the late 70s and early 80s. Then I started on the issues being put out at the time. There are a lot of omnibus collections out, but I still have some of those old reprints. I hope you will do more videos featuring the Legion as you go. (By the way, that story you showed in your omnibus about the origin of the Legion of Substitute Heroes is a terrific one).
Got a couple of omnis of the LSOH, they are excellent. Surprised they have yet to bring out any omnis for Superboy though from the Silver age and before. I didn't read them as they came off the racks, DC was just not so readily available in Maidstone but I did pick them up a few years later on mass so I was always reading the Adventure comics, generally out of order as well which is not always great (one of the reasons I like the omni format). Think I had the earliest issue and many of those very early ones with Saturn Girl, Lightning Lad etc and they were fun comics, very imaginative as you say and often tinged with sadness (same with Supergirl and the legion). The art was always first rate, though I am certain my Marvel eyes at the time would have said it looked a little boring. A really enjoyable video, must pick up my volumes of the legion and dip back into them again. Also, always loved the rejects as well, wonderful heroes with totally daft powers !
@@michaelk.vaughan8617 Yes, surprised that has yet to be released. Quite a few of the Silver age ones have now bronze age. Haven't read many of the 70s stories.

Legion fans are pretty loyal. Hard to believe they don’t have a current comic book series!
Silver age. Full on camp!
Oh yes! Full on!
The Legion!!! So I can make a 50-hour video? Does RUclips allow that?
For you? Of course. Might take a bit to upload.

Thanks! I was worried this might be a bore!
There were other Super Hero comics. There were other Science Fiction comics. But the Legion was the only comic that featured both.

She is kind of an icon for me! I will never forget that lady.

The Substitute Heroes were fantastic!
While only three Legionnaires were featured in that first story, it's obvious that they weren't the only members even then.
Enjoying the fact that we’ve moved onto DC 😊
It should be fun! There is some Dark Horse stuff I’m hoping to get to as well.
I have always hated the mutiverse idea... so lazy... Agree about depowering Supes!
Yeah, I’ve always been against making Superman wimpy!
I really enjoy the 5 years later concept, would make for a nice follow up video, just saying :)
It would.
Awesome!
Thanks for watching, James!

So glad you enjoyed the video! All the omnibus volumes are really great. I’m hoping they put out the Bronze Age stuff eventually.

I won all 12 Archive editions last night for only €120! 🙂
Score!
