Yeah, it really is wonderful. I never would have guessed when I was reading them back in the 80s that one day those stories would be reprinted so gorgeously!
Barry Smith did the original art on "Conan", as you know, but it's difficult to compare him to John Buscema on the comic. I think Buscema did his best stuff on the magazine. He was also my favourite artist in my teens. Roy Thomas was excellent on the scripting too. I had "Swamp Thing" from 1974 and wasn't bad later when another artist/scripter did it. DC revived superhero comics after the "crash" that finished EC comics, but it was Stan Lee along with his artists who really revived the medium with "The Fantastic Four".
I was born in 1953. I actually learned how to read by EC Comics. Back in the late 70's I met Theodore Sturgeon at a SF convention here in Detroit. I may have caught him at a bad time, but I asked him what he thought of Swamp Thing. Swamp Thing is basically a rip off of his story "It". LOL As always another great video.
Some nice choices. I read some Fantastic Four growing up along with Superman, The Flash, and really a variety of things like Casper, Baby Huey, Hot Stuff, Archie, etc. I didn't have an allowance so I couldn't follow most books. It wasn't until the mid 80s that I got back into comics. Since you like EC comics I'd recommend reading Xenozoic Tales by Mark Schultz. Somewhere during the 80s a guy recommend I read some American Splendor by Harvey Pekar, and it opened up a new genre of comic for me, the slice-of-life, or auto bio comic, which lead to some other great reads. Eightball by Daniel Clowes is another suggestion. I also started reading the X-Men comics around this time with the Chris Claremont, Cockrum, Byrne run. In the 90s I read Batman during that whole phase, along with the Alan Moore run on Swamp Thing, and his run on Miracle Man, which is recommendable too, along with V for Vendetta. There was a small but interesting series called Black Dragon by Bolton & Claremont. The Rick Veitch runs on the Brat Pack, The Maximortal, The One were all kind of trippy and an alternate take on mainstream super hero comics (deconstructed, is what I think they refer to them as), but a very fun read as well. Concrete was a great adventure story by Paul Chadwick. If you want to read something, I found hilarious, read the paperback edition to Joe Matt's Peep Show: The Cartoon Diary by Joe Matt. They are one page strips about his life. Kings in Disguise by James Vance is a nicely told depression era graphic novel that Alan Moore called, "One of the most moving and compelling human stories in the medium." And well, as you know, so much more.
I thought Conan would have made number one! You put this up at a good time, I was just talking to someone about going to the comic book store and picking up a bunch of these that I have missed out on and binge them. Definitely going to look for "Swamp Thing" haha
Nice choices! I remember really enjoying seeing the short Robert E. Howard comic strips at the end of the Dark Horse Conan comics, and I thought Cary Nord’s art was perfect for the series.
Your Uncle Jack collected Superman and Batman comics during the 1950s and early 1960s. When he went into the Navy in 1963, our Mom gave all of his treasured comics away. It was sad to see my big brother fall apart before my very eyes. Truly tragic! All his Superman, Super Boy, Super Girl and yes! Super Dog comics gone forever. It took years for Jack to fully recover from the blow.
Glad to see Fantastic Four there, my favourite from Marvel along with The Incredible Hulk. Batman my all time favourite, but can never argue with anyone who puts Superman top. Good choices overall.
This was a great video! Love the energy, as usual! I’m a comic fan and actually did not know about EC comics... I feel like such an amateur now 😔. I will definitely go on the hunt for some of these!
You will really like those EC comics. The quality is just amazing on those books. They blew everything else away at that time and they still hold up. Thanks for watching, my friend!
As a kid in the 1970s, I loved Marvel mostly, such as Fantastic Four, Avengers, Iron Fist, Master of Kung Fu and of course every Conan title. Later, I learned about EC. Very fun.
I never could get into Comic books, I read Casper, Richy Rich and The Archies but that's it and it was a short portion of my childhood. Loved the comics in the paper but that's it. They look fun though.
Have you seen the Creeps and vampiress Carmilla comics? They are new homages to the EC comics and have some of the original talent working on them. I'm curious how they compare to the originals and what a fan of the originals thinks of them.
I know about Warren’s Creepy and Vampirella, if that’s what you are referring to. The earlier issues of Creepy were very much like the older EC. I liked them.
@@michaelk.vaughan8617 There are new ones called The Creeps, which started about 4 years ago and is an homage to Creepy, Eerie etc and Vampiress Carmilla which started last year and is an homage to Vampirella. New mags, but they have some stories written by the talent from the older comics and use the same layout. They sell them at Barnes and Noble with the other horror mags and they have a website but it's a little weird.
Comic books!? I thought this was a serious channel about serious things. Unsubbed, disliked and reported for false advertising 🤬 That is to say: great video as always! I only ever read the first two Hellboy comics, mostly because i loved the art style. I may have to get hold on of those omnibuses. Tales From the Crypt were released as magazines here in Norway when i was a kid in the 80s, and boy were i ever fascinated. For the most part i was more into the funny comic strips than the action stories. The Far Side and such
My Top 10 10) The Killing Joke 9) Batman who Laughes 8) Arkham Asylum 7) From Hell 6) Batman: The Long Halloween 5) Batman: Hush 4) V for Vendetta 3) Batman: Dark Victory 2) Watchmen 1) Batman: Knightfall
I love your enthusiasm for things you love and how you are true to yourself. Very cool
Thanks!
That Absolute Swamp Thing is such a gorgeous edition. Such a great format.
Yeah, it really is wonderful. I never would have guessed when I was reading them back in the 80s that one day those stories would be reprinted so gorgeously!
Number 1 had to be number one. Swamp Thing vol 3 Absolute is out this year… but look out for the Question Omni…can’t wait for that one…

yep, Superman, Cap, FF, Adam Strange, The Flash, and EC Comics are some I'm into as well ! Thanks for sharing your top ten 😊
Great informative video. I'm going to invest in EC comics straight away. Especially in that Choke Gasp! brick.

A tiny bit bummed Spider-Man didn’t make your list but still a great video!
Yes, this is truly my most controversial video! I can here the grumbling about my favorites from far and wide! I do really like Spider-Man.

"The ever lovin blue-eyed thing", Wow it's been a moment since I've heard that phrase. Thanks for bringing that back for me!
You are very welcome.
Nice choices! I remember really enjoying seeing the short Robert E. Howard comic strips at the end of the Dark Horse Conan comics, and I thought Cary Nord’s art was perfect for the series.
Yes, Nord’s art is great. Of course I had to get a huge omnibus of that too. I have a real problem.
Nothing wrong with some self indulgence! I should read Alan Moore's Swamp Thing but haven't gotten around to it yet.
You will really like that run on Swamp Thing! Classic stuff.

This is a really tragic story!
Why do mothers always seem so incapable of understanding the value of these things?

Awesome video Michael! Amazing list.
Thanks. This was a fun video to do!
@@michaelk.vaughan8617 I could tell. I have got a bunch of graphic novels, that aren't horror.
Tales from the Crypt at #10?! My favourite! How could you? O the humanity 🙀. Deb
I know! What was I thinking?!

My favs Conan ,and still have them , are the black and white magazines ones. Got boxes of them.
No Batman?!? Better than ol' American Apple Pie-Man any day lol
Bat who? Ha! Thanks for watching!

EC comics, right on!
EC Comics were the best ever.
I got some old original Swamp Thing comics
Yeah! Vault of Horror. 👍
Love the tie.
I've never read a comic book before!
So rock 'n roll and RPGs and movies and video games aren't the reason for all of our problems? It's comic books! Now I understand. JK. Great video.
The Swamp Thing movie was no Tarzan Finds a Son!, but I wouldn't exactly call it terrible.
I had no interest in the TV show. I think the TV show had been and gone by the time I saw the movie.
Is it true, as Roger & Rachel have whispered, that you have Jack "King" Kirby's square jaw in a bell jar in Stately Vaughan Manor's East Cupola?
Uhhhh….maybe….🙄
👍Hellboy
No.... XMen ?
Enjoyed the Video.
They are up there in the top 20. I really like X-Men.
I still have all my originals from late 70s
My Top 10
10) The Killing Joke
9) Batman who Laughes
8) Arkham Asylum
7) From Hell

4) V for Vendetta
3) Batman: Dark Victory

Not my favorite actually. I’m more of a Superman guy.
