- New Zealand is hiding a secret. Underneath it is an entire underwater continent. This is Zealandia! What if Zealandia never actually sank? How would this change world history? Here is one scenario.

Every nationalist kiwi is now teary eyed, sad at what could have been: their long dreamt desire of being above Australia.
We still have our Super Kiwis and we've brought the Haast Eagle back from the dead. Soon we shall get our revenge.

There's only one why to settle this. You gather your Moas and we'll bring out kangaroos and commence the greatest cavalry charge witnessed by any Kiwi or Aussie, and whoever is victorious will be deemed the greater nation.
Yeah we have a secret base inside a hollow not so dead Volcano that is dedicated to creating/recreating vicous beasts in our bit to take over australia for its mineral wealth.
I feel like the Dutch may have decided to colonize New Zealandia and Australia if this timeline existed. The Dutch mainly avoided colonizing the region due to a lack of resources, however with Zealandia there'd be two viable places for colonization that are near one another.
Liked, That is a very smart idea and is legit enough
20jjc153 I was thinking the same thing. With Batavia in Indonesia not too far away, this would sure helped out the Dutch in colonization now it's a viable option.
Australia is mostly desert, Zealandia would be alright in the northern part I guess.
+A Very Kind Guy Australia is less of a desert in this timeline because Zeelandia blocks most of the warm current. (2:40)
Martijn Bouman So it's freezing cold then, much better.
It's okay New Zealand. Australians always remember you even if other people forget.

Silas Kow the Dutch discovered Australia and new zealand
Misha Zwietink They sensed the underwater continent
That explains why we discovered it...
*_We sensed it's potential!!_*
To our Dutch friends:
Yes, it is true Dutch seafarers discovered Western Australia, Tasmania and New Zealand. However, the reason why the Dutch never colonised these areas is simple: the Dutch, at that time (16th and 17th centuries) were more interested in seeking out opportunities for trade, rather than establishing any kind of major settlement beyond trading posts. And, I must say, they soon realised that there was nothing for them there trade-wise. So, they, quite understandably, concentrated on what would become the Dutch East Indies, or modern Indonesia.
That said, I must point out, as someone who studied British Imperialism at uni, AlternateHistoryHub left out one VERY important factor: at the same time Cook was nosing about the region, so were the French. And once the existence of a place like Zelandia had been made known, I can guarantee the French would have been out to colonise it themselves like a shot! I leave it to you to imagine what the outcome of throwing the French in would be.
Kiwis are just emus friendlier and smaller little brother
*Change my mind*
Emus are just the Moa's smaller, skinnier little brother
Actually kiwi's are the Moa's little baby brother and the Emu is the little weird kid next door.
Atleast the Kiwis don't revolt against the human overloads, damn Emu's!

What if Zelandia and Atlantis went to war with each other long ago that resulted in the destruction and sinking of both civilizations?

Unchi. my diabolical plan is to make super kiwis to take over the world. muhuhahaha!!!!

So, there's one quibble I have with this:
The East Australian Current runs further west than you have it running in this vid, pretty much down the coast of Queensland to Byron Bay, where it then heads out into the Pacific, past Lord Howe Island and eventually hitting the North Island of New Zealand. With the above land mass, you'd still have warm water heading south through the gap and the west coast of Zealandia, with a confluence where this warmer water meets the cold waters of the Southern Circumpolar Current is turned north by the southernmost tip of Zealandia.
Amongst other things, this means you'd have one heck of a fishery off of the coast of New South Wales/Western Zealandia, because you'd have cold nutrient rich water meeting warm water (a real-world example of this is where the Labrador Current meets the Gulf Stream around Newfoundland, which made the Northwest Atlantic Cod Fishery). I don't know if it would be as big as said industry, but it would still probably be pretty impressive.
It would also mean that Eastern Australia would probably be about the same temperature-wise as in real life, but really importantly, it would likely be wetter along the Southeast coast. You could end up with temperate rainforest all the way down to Melbourne.
Another effect of all this is that when Federation comes up in the late 19th century, it's going to change everything. New Zealand very nearly ended up a state of Australia IRL, and if it's a more fertile land than Australia is, then it may end up being populous enough that when the arguments for Federation start, it's New Zealand arguing about if Australia should join their federation instead of the other way around.
And if you do end up with the two as one state, it changes everything for the First Australians. The Treaty of Waitangi gives a legal precedent for a similar treaty to be made with the First Australians, so they don't get treated as wildlife until 1963, they would have had recognised land rights nearly 100 years before they got them IRL, and so many other cruelties and privations that were legitimised in Australia would not have happened. I'm not saying it would have made racism magically disappear from Australia, but it would have improved matters a lot.
Was going to comment this. In this situation I would almost guarantee that New Zealand would become a part of Australia, or like you said, maybe the other way around, seeing as in this timeline he has the British win total victory over the Māori, there would be no treaty preventing New Zealand from federating with Australia.
Wow the Australia It would be more fartile with more Watter, this country It Very Rich like Luxemburgo or swisszetland and norway.
@@gabrielsilva-pl3dx
The east coast would be wetter, yes, but the natural state for much of the East Coast of Australia's already wet temperate forest/rainforest anyway (What early European colonisers saw was the result of 30,000+years of land management from the First Australians). We do have some good soils along that coast, but inland you're going to still have the issue of Australian soil being leached and old (and as a result poor in a lot of key minerals like phosphorous). The rains also aren't likely to proceed far inland because of the Great Dividing Range.
What if all oceans become land, and all land become oceanes
Well, assuming humans existed in such a world we wouldn't have one great unified civilization. Swapping the Oceans and The Land creates massive (and I do mean massive) regions of desert and rocky badland that stretch for thousands of miles. Much like sailing ships had to have months worth of rations when crossing the ocean, caravans would have to have months worth of rations for crossing the Hellish Pacific Landmass. Rivers wouldn't help much either, as they'd be too densely populated with trees and other flora to be navigable. The civilizations of the world would be isolated to the world's coastlines. What are "Islands" to us would be giant lakes to act as safe havens in a harsh desert.
We would drown
Then hope you listened to those swim lessons.

Then people would actually realise we exist, and not think we're part of Aussie, or not there at all
@@Solace6428 I feel the youtuber has a fundamental absence of knowledge about the colonization of New Zealand and Australia. First Australia was multiple penal settlements. A significantly large portion of the earliest colonizers of Australia did not go their by choice. Both Australia and New Zealand were just too far away for many people to chose to immigrate there during the 18th or even 19th centuries. Secondly, New Zealand had it's native vs colonizer wars, and it resulted in a certain treaty. Now that does not mean that there is no racial issues, but it certainly was not in the same ballpark as the USA or Australia (FFS, in the 1890s, The NEw Zealand government at that time, thought Australia was TOO racist, and that they would try to treat the Maori like they did the Aborigines and start more wars, so New Zealand refused to join the Commonwealth of Australia. FFS, a Maori could own land and vote in the 1800s, something the Australians and the Americans would see as totally alien).

I'd feel like the Maori would have been very powerful in this timeline, since they would have access to ores and other resources that are far scarcer on the smaller islands, so it could have happened that they put up enough of a fight to still be a majority population on Zealandia and subsequently, Australia would have been overrun less. I'd also think that this ethnical divide would pretty much be the mountains, with the europeans being better equipped to withstand cold environments.
Most of the time Natives lose the fights against the colonizers because of the diseases the colonizers bring, so they would need resistance to diseases to put up a good fight, which they _would_ get if there were enough easy to domesticate animals on Zealandia.
I think that would depend on whether polynesian settlers arrived on this landmass earlier than in our timeline, bearing in mind that just like our timeline they would probably not have technologies like mining, metallurgy or gunpowder when they first arrived and so would have to discover these naturally. Even if they did arrive earlier they would probably not have discovered these technologies before contact with European settlers as it took most civilisations thousands of years to develop them, unless we postulate earlier contact between this land and say Chinese explorers which enables an earlier transfer of technologies and skills.

I got worried for a second that he'd somehow found out about our super kiwis but it was just a sarcastic joke lol.
Don't worry guys, Project Flying Kiwi is still a go. Repeat, Flying Kiwi is still a go.
Actually this interests me. New Zealand doesn't have native terrestrial mammals and so with a larger landmass a much more diverse and resilient ecosystem may have appeared.
With the arrival of the Maori, rats, and pigs and such, I still think the ecosystem would have been damaged but perhaps some now extinct species like Moa and Haast's Eagle would be alive today.
Regarding the wars. Despite the Maori being technologically outgunned they were not fools, and had a long established warrior culture with many wars against other tribes. The larger landmass could have lessened the warrior nature of the Maori- with resources being more plentiful- as easily as it could have increased it- with more room for more people.
Overall, the larger land area, combined with the Maori being one of the quicker peoples to adapt to european colonialism, could well mean the Maori wars may have been longer and harder than they were.
ohh, i was worried for a second that project flying kiwi was compromised. New Zealand actually didn't split from Australia, it actually split from Gondwana (85million years ago) it was connect to the areas of gondwana which eventually became South america (explains how similar our plant life is) Antarctica and part of the northern island was connected to what would become Australia. When the asteroid his earth it plummeted the worlds temperatures, as New Zealand was already very cold and there was only a small amount of fauna on the islands to begin with, the small amount was basically wiped out and since new Zealand never made contact with another land mass after the extinction event there was no way for big animals to be reintroduced, only the birds, bats, insects, and reptiles were able to come across the ocean by storm or were able to survive the extension event.
TLDR new Zealand didn't really break off from Australia, extention event killed everything big, no way for big stuff to get back to new zealand - so thats why we have lame animals.
Oskar Goedeke just letting you know, there's a typo in the last paragraph. Break instead of brake.
Lame?!
But wouldn’t the brits kill the megafauna when they arrived
Tbh, if the moas and Haast's eagle were to still be alive in this zealandia continent, then they would've been critically endangered by now, or even worse, may go extinct more recently than previous.

A few things,
One. It would of taken a lot longer for Japan to surrender, as they had this thing going where they never surrender.
Two Japan, would most likely be split like Korea, as the USSR was going to invade Japan. And America, kinda didn't want that to happen, so what they would both do a land invasion to try to take the most land.
Three. WWIII. Nukes were pretty much the only thing keeping the USSR and the US from strangling each other, all it would take is the right thing for that to happen, it's possible that Korea, could be such thing that started WWIII, as it would be possible that after those two started fighting, then Japan would, and then dominoes fall and its capitalism vs communism. Who would win? This would be an extremely tough call. However, at this point, it's most likely that the U.S would win. At this point, its likely plenty of European country's under soviet control would try to rebel, as they didn't like the communist control over them. Though, it's most likely that the USSR would take over more of Western Europe before getting pushed back, as for Asia, Korea and Japan would most likely be full communists with China's help, though Australia and New Zealand would keep China at bay, at least for a while. Some would think that after the USSR fall to the allies that there would be peace, this wouldn't be the case. At this point many people would see a pattern, on both sides, every 10 to 20 years, there's a huge war. One or both sides would realize, that so long as there were two sides, there would never be peace. Chances are, China looses. After this the leaders of the world would be extremely worrisome about any rouge country, they would try too keep any land they have, as they would fear another huge power starting another war. This could prevent independence for African and some Asian Countries. Though it's likely they would eventually get independence. So, ironically, weapons or mass destruction kept peace better without them

Hmmm, because I am "that guy", I'd like to point out that Australia had been colonized for 40,000 years before New Zealand by the aboriginals. Given that the Zealandian continent would be much closer to Australia, wouldn't there be a pretty high chance of aboriginals populating the continent first? Especially if the land is much more fertile than Australia's, that could have changed the development of civilization in the South Pacific...
Aboriginal Australians didn't have the transport needed to cross big bodies of water. Their most advanced vessels were bark canoes. Also, they weren't any of the stress factors (e.g. overpopulation) that normally lead to colonisation.
They managed to get to Australia from South-East Asia, I'm sure they could get to Zealandia, especially during the Ice Age when water levels were lower.
Just the Coolest Dude Yo I think you have a point there. Suuurrrely there should be aboriginal people here if that was the case. TBH i havnt seen one aboriginal EVER in NZ. only when i go to Auz.
+SpookySocialist
Yikes! I just got spooked by that socialist!
Yeah, my thinking was that, given that they made it to Tasmania, they probably had the capability of building seacraft to make it over to Zealandia if there wasn't a land-bridge. It would be interesting to see how history would have changed had there been a longer-settled agricultural group living in the area...
+Just the Coolest Dude Yo Aborigines crossed to Tasmania via a landbridge, not by sailing there.
Wow, this is fantastic, especially the last photos showing a fictional night-view on Zealandia. I heard of this lost continet, but had no idea that it existed until so recently.
“Unknown lands”
What a very imperial way to describe a place where people already live.
I'm just saying Australia was colonised by its aboriginal natives 100 000 years ago and with Zealandia being that close it would be colonised by natives Australians though
Actually no, New Zealand was the last major land mass (Apart from Antarctica) to be found by natives.
D3rpy B34n I mean the western peninsula would be close enough for native Australia's who sailed a much further distance and with it being this close now it would be probably colonised by native Australians
Clorox Bleach it wasn't
moscar11 Native Australia sailed to Australia from Africa and constantly traded with native South East Asia Islanders and they used boats and with it being that close native Australians would probably discover it as native Australians the reason they found Australia was via island hopping from Africa so with them being that close to Zealandia it would be likely Australians would get there first
SOO much of that was incorrect. But to save you from failing history if you go to australia, here's a little tidbit from Wikipedia:
Human habitation of the Australian continent is estimated to have begun between 42,000 and 48,000 years ago, possibly with the migration of people by land bridges and short sea-crossings from what is now Southeast Asia.

*Edit* Crap... I forgot that Global Warming is doing the opposite effect of draining water... I'm an idiot...

we can put all the water in central Africa
A Very Kind Guy Ummmm....Space?
I've always wondered with sea explorers, especially in the East; what drove them to sail huge distances without knowing anything about other islands or landmasses? Why would they do it? It just seems surreal to me.
Also I really wish Zealandia existed as in not (almost) drowned by the sea
i those people just in it for the thrills and glory in it.
@@timexyemerald6290I had a stroke reading that
do a what if the British isles where connected to mainland Europe
Matt Clark then there could've been a chance of the being invaded in WW2
I mean Hitler did have a plan called Operation Sea Lion which was the invasion of Britain early in the war, but it proved impossible due to the Luftwaffe losing the battle of Britain, and with the British maintaining navel superiority, but in an alternate WW2 the invasion of Britain could have been a very real prospect.
WW2 would not have happened considering how this change would be so drastic that history as we know it would have been completely different.
I'm sure the Dutch are on their way to make that a reality.
then Great Britain wouldn't exist, it would have been still part of France
I think that you underestimate the Maori. The Maori were the only natives to defend large part of their country or countries in the armed conflict. Moreover, the Maori relatively quickly find their way around the courts of law.
"Found," but a great comment.
Remember of all the native people, the Maori were the ones that got the best deal from the British, with the Treaty of Waitangi giving them co-soverity, which actually stuck
I agree, the Maori wars in New Zealand were impressive. In this reality English would have won eventually but they were worried with the force they had at the time the treaty was signed. In the alternate reality, if the Maori population was bigger, it would have been an interesting fight.
If Zealandia had a big population. England would have done what the did India and elsewhere, support one chief they could control and make him puppet King of Zealandia, train his army. So that King would do the fighting for them to bring all of Zealandia under "civilized control"
They didn't conquer New Zealand no, but they would have, England had much more man power than New Zealand, it was committed elsewhere. Cheifs didn't necessarily sign a bad deal, they signed a treaty in Maori, it was incorrectly (some say deliberately) translated into English. Maori did not cede sovereignty in their version, there we're lots of issues with how the Treaty was interpreted.

As a half Australian and half Kiwi, I love this video, keep it up :)
PenguinOfFrozenWar. Creep
am i the only one who gets triggered every time he pronounces Maori may-your-ree.

Yes and I'm not even Maori
Nate B True dat
How are you supposed to say it?
Winter To for me I say ma-ree
If Mexico won the American and Mexican war
Seal of approval looks Good to me
Silvia Banuelos Mexican Donald Trump: ¡Tenemos que mantener a esos americanos ilegales de entrar en nuestra frontera!
It be very probable with the CSA right on the border and millions of slaves escaping to mexico.
If they also won the Texan Revolution, Mexico would be huge.
Most Europeans at the time thought Mexico would easily win because they had a formal European-style army while the US had a mix of armies and militias that they saw as an unorganized mob.
4:59 highly inaccurate !
New Zealand was discovered by the Dutch in 1642 (Abel Tasman) and Australia even before that !!!
By the way still a good video
Tasmen found New Zealand first but he though it was the coast of Australia so that kinda doesn't count
Zealandia looks like a wizard bowling playing Cricket
I am pretty sure that Cook didn't discover Australia and new Zealand.
True. The Dutch were the first Europeans to reach Australia and New Zealand.
true its a common misconception, cook charted the east coast and claimed Australia and new Zealand for britian but he didn't discover them,
Rik van Paddenburg there is a famous car care n the area of The that held the body of a dutch person, the body was found to date back before Cook, but the Dutch never recorded it, therefore technically Cook discovered it since discovering also includes reporting it's location.
This is coming from the citizen of New Zealand
Rik van Paddenburg able tasman did it first and named new zealand
Yeah, but Abel Tasman never set foot on New Zealand soil, just sailed past it.
If Zealandia became more populated than Australia (as it probably would), then would that mean that Australia and New Zealand's roles would be swapped?
What do you mean by their roles swapped?
Like how Australia is kind of an older brother to New Zealand
Oh i guess it probably would be
SuperAtomSplitter no New Zealand would still smack the Aussies in rugby
Depends on if this new continent has the natural resources that Australia currently has. I think it would be most likely that because of Australia's vast wealth of natural ore and minerals Australia would still be a rich, populated country.
*_Zealandia is the next Canada_*
Great but always in the shadow of its bigger more famous brother (Australia)
Is that some kind of threat?
that pronunciation of Maori... ugh.... kill me
Christopher Brady Ikr. May-or-ee. Gross.
Christopher Brady Blame speech patterns and western accents then.
That's literally how it goes.
correct pronuncation "mao-ree"
It was so bad
Christopher Brady
Mayori lol
New Zealand has a fairly grand vacation and wold attract pion sites, so chances are, this number would largely increase, and with the cold, as well as the mountains that would grow from the Pacific and Australian plates, making for a much more glorious ski and winter season, as well as much easier access to Antarctica, for A)trips, for the public (possibly expensive as it is cold) and B)a lot more, and easier science expeditions, which might also bring in more income for New Zealand/Zealandea.
What if New Zealand had joined Australia?
Tomorrow We Live probably did once you think
Blair Berg They did geologically...
In what. Your kidding right. I for one would emigrate to the US or UK.
Nice profile picture!
They certainly should or no-one else would ever have a chance to win the Rugby Union World Cup.
"The anglosphere" art was perfect
Cook didn't discover New Zealand, Able Tasman did.
He didn't discover Australia either. Not much research was done for the video apparently.
Australia was discovered by the Dutch eighty years before the British discovered it
Cook was among the first Europeans to those respective places and he did in fact map out significant parts of the coastlines.
Kupe did ( the actual first person but no one knew him. And he from hawikii (Hawaii) ) besides Abel got killed from our savage ancestors
no it was maui

What if the United States had annexed Canada during the war of 1812?
It wouldn't be led by Dustbin Trudeau
Nope. How about- What if the UK hadn't done a Racial Cleansing on the Acadians?
To accomplish that they would've needed to be competent at the time.
This also - What if Great Britain reconquered Thirteen colonies in the war of 1812?
Then there wouldn't be any cajun food. I've never been so glad for ethnic cleansing.
As an Australian, I would be so happy if Zealandia existed and stopped the East Australian Current. Because it would be freezing cold here instead of boiling fucking hot, and being cold is better than being hot.
I'd love to see a video on "what if the Gallipoli landings were successful in 1915" that could have completely changed the First World War and in turn potentially our whole reality.
Still waiting for this
Constantinople would be Greek again?

DBarationX it's bloody annoying but hey, at least someone did a video about nz
DBarationX he's clearly not from NZ so why would he be able to say it correctly there is probably the 1% in the world that ain't from NZ that'll be able to say it properly
Wouldn't it make more sense that Zealandia is populated by Aboriginal people from Australia? Polynesians were the best sailors in the world which is why they migrated to New Zealand so late, but in this timeline Zealandia is about as close to the east coast of Australia as Australia is currently to Indonesia on the north coast, and Australia and Indonesia had trade dating back ages. In this timeline surely Aboriginals would have moved to Zealandia much earlier, especially if the climates were better?
Abos weren't great sailors compared to the Polynesians. They'll lucky enough to even have a land bridge that connected to Australia.
And nope, there have never been a land brigde between Australia and New Guinea. Yet, they did manage to reach Australia from there through Torres Strait - or, better to say, through the islands on the Torres Strait.
Look at GoogleMaps, and you'll see pretty many underwater volcanoes between the "west coast" of Zealandia and the east cost of Australia. Lift them up with Zealandia, they become islands, and you get a similar picture.
With New Zealandia though would it still be rough current, or would the new continent blanket the effect a bit?
Technology and exploration wasn't really their thing..
+Jackal Thief In the video, they let the current flow around the eastern bank of the north peninsula, so perhaps the currents may be indeed not that rough.
The Dutch discovered Australia and New Zealand, Australia was once called New Holland and New Zealand is called after Zeeland and discovered by Willem Janszoon
yeah, not much people know this. it was also a suprise to me.
What makes you think that the Polynesians would find Zealandia in 1200 BC? In our timeline, they got there in 1200 AD. In 1200 BC, the polynesian people didn't exist.
*alternate*
+LagiNaLangAko23The Polynesians didn't exit before the Comen Era, so even if they would have found Zealandia sooner it wouldn't be that far back in history just like +icedragon769 said.
I'm pretty sure that Dutch discovered
New Zealand, or Zeeland, as they called it.
They were the first to visit but British were first to colonise
positive neutrino yep dutch discovered new zealand first
First Europeans to land on both Australia and New Zealand were Dutch, that is 100% correct. They just didn't colonize it. And Americans like to keep things simple when it comes to other countries because it's hard enough for them to try and care about anything but their own country as it is.
they actually called it stadten landt
Gary Brock no it was abel tasman a dutch man who discoved it do reasearch mate
in what alternate history does james cook discover new zealand (named after dutch province) find new zealand first and not the dutch
Finally, Old Zealand.
Woah Woah Woah. Hold up. When Zealandia and Australia were connected it looked like Skull Island. I knew the map of Skull Island looked familiar to me.
It is obvious United Kingdom would have colonized all one continent or share with France and Portugal.
Ares Brandon 1997 Share with France, you for real? Share with Portugal, ok fair enough, or even the Dutch but the French, come on.
Ares Brandon 1997 France? Really?
The British have already shared France with the French ... big mistake.
Lars Yeah won't be making that one again ;)
Ares Brandon 1997 The British probably wouldn't share with any of them, maybe the Dutch in the beginning, but not forever.
"May-oree"
PXbP I cringed so hard the first time he said it
As an Australian this is particularly interesting. The Dutch actually reached Australia in the early 1600s, and New Zealand in 1642. They didn’t take a huge amount of interest though, and I wonder if they would have in this situation. I imagine though that it would still have been the British who first tried to colonise. The Chinese probably reached Aus much earlier but they had little interest in colonisation and it would be unlikely that they would have found Zealandia in this scenario. I think you would be right in saying that Zealandia would be the greater focus for colonisation, though I wouldn’t imagine the overall migration to Aus/Zealandia to be much higher, just more focused on the latter. Given the presumably much larger population of Maori (MOW-ri), and the real-life history of war with the colonisers (as opposed to in Australia where conflict was largely very localised), the colonisers of Zealandia would probably have much greater difficulty displacing the locals, and should they eventually reign supreme, the country would be much more evenly split between the two ethnicities.
What if Australia went to war with Zealandiana
Zealandia would have to exist first before any wars occur. You need to know their culture, ways of think, resources, technology, etc.
RV's history files tbh us kiwis wouldn't stand much of a chance. Our navy consists of less than 15, ships, our airforce has very little fighting force and our army consists of less than 4000 personal. We are primarily a peace keeping force. The only part of our defence force that is sent in combat missions is our amazing sas, for a group of its size or punches well above its weight. But again the Aussies have more men, better equipment and more money to throw at a war with us.
RV's history files Then RIP Australia but only if you account for our super kiwis
It would be the least important war in history probably
australia had a war on flipping emus. i thinks that's the least important war.

hello, fellow kiwi. from welly
Im sorry but new zealand was discoved by abel tasman and willem janszoon made the first documented discovery of australia in 1606 before cook was born
Charlie Braun Abel tasmen discovered it, james cook mapped it😊😊
he still got information wrong
Australia was called New Holland.. New Zealand is named after the Dutch province of Zeeland
Henry B. Yea nz was called Nieww Zeeland or something like that.
firefrostcat62 Abel Tasman named the new discovered land "Statenlandt" in 1642. A few years later the Dutch called it Nieuw-Zeeland or Nova Zeelandia.. It appears on maps from 1644.. Long before James Cook came.
