- Not so deep beneath the waters of the Pacific lies a sunken continent. Is this Earth's 8th continent? Today I investigate these wild claims to see if there's any truth to this.

Just like astronomers had to introduce a term "dwarf planet" for Pluto and other Kuyper belt objects, the geologists may consider "dwarf continent". I always just assumed anybody claiming Europe and Asia as different continents was full of shit. If you look at a plate tectonic map, you’ll see that the “continent” of Asia, includes land that is on the North America plate. The Arabia plate covers a majority of the Middle East, which is part of the “Continent” of Asia. Europe and most of Asia are on the same continental shelf too. For super-continents, I think that they would be. America, which is composed of North and South America, Afro-Eurasia, which is composed of Africa, Europe, and Asia, Oceania, which includes Australia, New Guinea, The Filipines, and the islands of the Pacific, “Oh yeah and Antarctica”.
Dutch explorer Abel Tasman (1642) named what is now New Zealand "Staten Landt" in honour of the Dutch parliament. By 1657 the islands appear on Dutch maps as Nova Zeelandia, after the Dutch province. Zealandia was the female personification of New Zealand and appears on stamps from 1901 onward. She features on New Zealand's Coat of Arms (1956) and is based on actress Grace Kelly.

Happy New Year 2021 Atlas Pro. I kinda stumbled on your channel & find it to be well...more factual, informative than others I've seen on YT. I personally am not "entirely convinced" that Zelandia can "as yet" be considered an 8th Continent. However, in watching this video including some from GNS Science I do have a question if I may? In 2016 NZ suffered from a reasonable earthquake named the Kaikoura Earthquake 2016 . When this 7.8 magnitude earthquake occurred (& what a jolt it was, I live in Wellington NZ), it shifted in & around Kaikoura land including the Kaikoura/Marlborough shoreline. A piece of the seabed itself "rose" exposing unique life forms that "needed" to be underwater to survive. Sadly they died. Is it "possible" that the newly exposed land is in fact part of the Zealandia crust/shelf & given time with unfortunately more earthquakes, will more (of Zelandia?) land be exposed becoming the new face of NZ? For your reference - weather.com/science/space/news/new-zealand-earthquake-exposed-land-kaikoura-coast-esa & www.stuff.co.nz/national/politics/local-democracy-reporting/300173458/seabed-raised-by-kaikura-quake-proposed-for-rezoning-as-coastal-land - earthobservatory.nasa.gov/images/89206/powerful-earthquake-exposes-new-land-near-kaikoura Or simply Google the above mentioned earhtquake for more information. Would love to know your thoughts cheers.
The east coast of the North Island and upper south Island are gradually being dragged down by the Pacific Plate subducting under the Australian plate. Every now and then there's a rebound and the coast pops back up, as seen in the Kaikoura earthquake and the 1855 Wairarapa quake before it, but the general trend is sinking, at a rate of about 3mm per year.
Actually, Europe and Asia are divided by the Mediterranean, Black & Caspian Seas, the Caucasus Mountains, and the Ural Mountains. There are actually several mountain ranges dotted throughout Eurasia, such as the Caucasus Mountains Ural Mountains, Zagros Mountains, Teon Chong Mountains (sorry, I’m blanking out on the actual spelling because it’s Chinese), and the Himalayas among others. Heck, even Mt. Sini almost divides Asia from Africa (before the Suez Canal was dug of course).

It would be cool to have an 8th continent, but seeing as how most of Zealandia is at a depth of around 2000-3000 metres below sea-level (which is deeper than Australia is tall), even in shallow places getting as close as 500 metres below sea level. I think it would be nigh impossible to raise a meaningful body of land without digging out the volume of a whole other continent to fill it. For example if you go to Japan, you’re in Asia, same with the UK for Europe and Greenland for North America.
Not every island should be in a continent, only ones real close. If it's too far then it's not in any continent. That's why I prefer Australasia.

The Minion Memer depends on whether it is built around a Craton or shield, otherwise it is most certainly not a continent.
Wow, nice explanation.
Continents are first and foremost a social construct. It's about identity, that is why earope and asia are generally thought of as seperate continents. Most inhabitants of "Zealandia" as well as the rest of the world don't think of it as a continent, more often thought of as part of Australasia (Australia, New Zealand and some of the SE Asian islands).

Yep
There's good reason to not put antarctica as a continent either, since its land is actually a bunch of islands surrounded by ice on top of ocean. It's an archipelago, it has more similarities to zeelandia as it was mentioned in the video.
Antarctica is a trouble case too, given that if you take away all the ice there isn't much in the way of a large landmass.
I ALMOST included a side note about that. But I just made a whole video on that, so I figured I'd let it be.
Also, ice is just frozen water, so does that mean that most of Antarctica is underwater? :P
@@TarriPup It's fresh water for the most part. Not sure if that matters.

It’s funny that a potential continent is named after a place that not many people know about, with a population of not even half a million
I was taught in a Canadian school that Australia, New Zealand and the area in-between were the continent of Oceania and that calling Australia continent was incorrect. Never heard of Zealandia before. I would agree to 6 continents based on the theory I was taught. Europe and Asia are definitely 1 continent. The divide is much more ethno-cultural than geological.
I’m in Australia and feel like I was also taught the continent is called Oceania and includes the other nearby countries. Maybe it’s just because we wanted the title of largest island lol.
