What's Under Antarctica's Ice Sheets?
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 13 июл 2018
- Many of us know Antarctica as a land of ice and not much else. But hidden beneath the miles of glaciers and ice sheets lies a landmass that was last exposed 40 million years ago.
What does this land look like, and what could we expect to find if we are still around to see what's under Antarctica's ice sheets.
I forgot to mention that under the Antarctic treaty, mining is TECHNICALLY prohibited on Antarctic, but that expires in around 30 years, and it's uncertain whether or not it will be renewed. Plus this is all theoretical anyway and would take place over many hundreds of years, if not thousands.

A quick math check.
14.000.000 km2 x 1.6 km thick ice is 22.400.000 km3 of ice
Converted to water that yields 20.608.000 km3 of water
Spread over a total area of 361.000.000 km2 of ocean water, that gives an increase in sea level of 57 metres. So, well done on the math! I still don't know where the 26.500.000 km3 at 1:14 comes from...

Hey, for the shape of Antarctica without ice, did you consider the 60m rise of sea level or is it at current sea level ?
@PGH Engineer I understand the isostatic rebound will make the land higher, but the water level would also rise. If lets say the isostatic rebound makes the land rise by 200m and the water level raises by 60m, So net water line on the land raises 140m.
This 60m difference between isostatic and isostatic + water level makes for a different coastline profile. Take as an exemple the models of the current worldwide coastlines vs coastlines with a 60m water level increase. Some places change drastically, for example Floride pretty much completely disappears from the map. This is why I'm wondering if it was considered, the coastline and therefore outside shape will be different.
You remember that scene from one of the Star Wars movies where Obi Wan went to the planet where the clones were being produced?
Something akin to that.
I saw a video of a newly discovered ecosystem that's separated from the ocean but abundant with life in the water under the ice. The oxygen levels are extremely high in these waters creating extra large forms of isopods and crabs, starfish. I'm hoping more exploration footage comes out of this unique ecosystem that is in this otherwise plain area. Oh and besides penguins don't forget leopard seals that hunt the penguins. They are fierce predators
