Sheri, excellent video. As a firefighter I can tell you due to the bare flames candles in themselves deserve extra caution and should never be left burning unattended. Your points in this video though highlight the next level risk and I applaud you for highlighting this. Well done sheri!!!

The first photo you showed are actual fire starters. That's the purpose of them. Thats why they are in cupcake liners and not a glass vessel. They are a perfect way to use up left over wax. We love them for Bonfires.

I agree with you on those container candles with hazardous materials that are so close to the flame and would be very dangerous and they’re a fire hazard. I always thought why people do that, like they want to burn down their house or something? Lol But for those botanical candles that are commercially made (not those made by hobbyists but commercial large candle companies), in where I live at least are well tested with the disclaimer only to burn for two hours each time so only inside of the candle melts while outside candle wax remains unmelted. It is also called lantern candles for reasons that outside the wax doesn’t melt and after using the inside wax, you can reuse it as a lantern by putting a tea light candle inside. They control the outside candle wax not to melt by using a certain sized wick as well as high temp wax outside that do not melt like inside wax. And they test it well. As much as I understand your concerns it isn’t that all botanical/lantern candles to be fire hazards. It’s how you make them actually. But just using paraffin candle wax in outside won’t make it a safe lantern candle that’s for sure.

This is a great reminder. I have read about the candles with natural items added along with stones that have burst melted wax and glass all over.

Yes, that can definitely happen. If the glass jar is cheap and thin the heat from the flame can cause it to crack

I completely agree with you. I have been making floral candles since 2017 and I do use petals in my pillar candles but they are always placed outside of the burning pool and in a very low concentration. All of these always come with a proper warning and recommendation to remove any debris before burning. Every time I see highly flammable candles it makes me doubt the testing process.

I think to there is a big difference between adding some small petals around the outside of the candle. To add in a full pinecone or cinnamon sticks. Even if pinecones and cinnamon weren’t highly flammable it’s still such a large natural item to be adding in

Very good you talk about this! I am planning making candles with gem stones who are not flammeble. Also I would like to make a beach theme candle, but I won't use anything that can burn!!

I love making botanical candles, but note several times on candles and packaging they are used for candle warmers or decorative purposes only. Bold lettering!

I was planning to start making pillar candles with the fragrance elements in the outside like dried rosemary and lavender etc. I was planning to first add them in all the surface of the mould in a way the elements would be only in the outside of the candle. But I am not sure how the burning process would happen. Any option/recommendations?!?!

The only vessel for a candle that should be used for flammable materials is cast iron. Like for Halloween you can use cast iron cauldron themed candles or something like that. But also use a warning label so they know the ingredients are flammable.

Thanks for this info. I’m a newbie and I had no idea. I just looked at your Amazon list and I’m so lost of what socks are ideal for soy wax pillar candles. I know you need a particular wax for pillar candles but I don’t quite understand what wicks are the best.

One of the main candle supply companies over here has a well viewed candle making video (RUclips) where they add lots of tiny plant, rosebuds, etc. They don’t even mention that it isn’t safe or legal for that matter. They don’t say anything. When asked in the comments, they say you shouldn’t ever add them it us just for the video and decoration. So irresponsible.

I know quite Some candle making businesses who work with florals only. Make these lantarn candles and have lots of masterclasses. I cannot believe these people are irrespinsible.
