Why Didn't I Think of That Series - The Magic of ModPodge and Napkins Mixed Media Trick and Tips

  • You won't believe how simple this little mixed media trick is and how it helps make napkins easier to handle in your projects. You're gonna love this. I was just thinking of new ways to use napkins and I thought, how can I make them easier to work with. Here is the result of that little conversation with myself :o)
    ***********************
    So, as usual, as soon as I think I had a unique idea it turns out someone has already done it on RUclips somewhere. I'm happy to share the video link below from Shannon Green who did a video regarding this a while ago which I had not idea about guys. I never saw her video but she's a smart cookies and I'm not surprised that she thought of this. Now - my why didn't I think about that moment is intended to give all of YOU the why didn't I think of that moment. In my intro I am referring to myself as to say why didn't I think of this a long time ago. I've been using napkins for a long time and this might have been easier so when I had the thought, I was like, why don't I try that and sure enough it worked nicely. Had I seen this on Shannon Green's channel, or anyone else's for that matter, I would have given them a shout out for sure. I'm all about that guys. Now that it was pointed out and my intro is a little misleading, I want to shout out to Shannon as I admire and respect her and would never want to give false impressions. Check out her most recent video on it at the link below:

    I've been around the art/crafting world now for about 50 years. I've gone to art school and taught it at the college level as well and I can tell you it's amazing how many people around the world have identical or nearly identical genuinely "original" ideas in the same time frame. It's because products come on the market and we creatives play. It's inevitable! Don't be the least bit discouraged. It was your original idea no matter when you had it. In any case, I enjoy your videos regardless of who thought of ideas at which point on the timeline. It's just great that you take the time and effort to put it out here! Sometimes I discover a gem of a variation in the darnedest places. Keep playing!

      Cathy Childs Morrison-I’ve been around about as long, including art classes growing up, then college and teaching here and there, and I never once have seen this method, just similar techniques, most of them more complicated. And as for many people coming up with ideas at the same time, I think one of the most surprising examples, not art related though, is that the Theory of Evolution was discovered by TWO men at about the same time. Darwin just had better connections/finances. I can’t even remember who the other guy was, but I’m sure Google knows.
      The thing is like you said Cathy, Kellie discovered this on her own, so she should take comfort in that as she continues to come up with more ideas.
      Good job Kellie, I love your discovery, and you and your work as well. I really enjoy watching your videos.
      Bless you all❣️

    Hi Kellie! Came across this quite by accident, and am so glad I did! Love your technic, and who cares who thought of it first - meh. A couple thoughts: 1) If you lay the napkin face down on the craft sheet and apply the Mod Podge on the back, you would end up with a very smooth surface on the front of the napkin, which might be what you'd want sometimes. 2) When punching, place a piece of scrap paper or ordinary printer paper beneath the treated napkin to give sturdiness. Could also work with fussy cutting unless it's very intricate. And, if punching and you don't need an exact spot, add another piece of scrap paper on top, like a sandwich: scrap paper + napkin + scrap paper. The two scrap papers protect the napkin from tearing in the punch. BTW - although I've never seen these thoughts anywhere else, I'm sure they've been thought up by many others before me :D

      @@lisadee0276 Journal pages, collage, etc. You could place these on 4"x4" ceramic tiles and make coasters out of the tiles (after placing some cork or felt feet on the bottom of the tile) - apply Mod Podge to the coaster, place one of these napkins down on the tile, place another layer or two of Mod Podge down after applying the napkin to seal it. These make great backgrounds for cards, journals, collage, etc - use your imagination. I hope that helps to clear things up a little bit. Let me know if you have any more questions. 🙂

    • @SargentBubblescom
      @SargentBubblescom 5 лет назад

      I actually use clear spray paint to do napkins. It makes them stronger - almost a tiny bit like glassine. Kind of. It turns the white backgrounds almost clear. Spraying them with an acrylic coat (or lacquer) makes for a neat surface - but it's messy and hard to get the napkin to start flat while you spray the first coat. Patience and careful spraying will make a beautiful napkin much more usable.

    Awesome. Only one question. Doesn't this mean you did think of this? If you didn't see it somewhere else you did think it up yourself. Also if it does not cut properly with a die cut or other tool I would think you could add more layers of Mod Podge until it did, as long as they dry completely in between each layer. Might want to remind people who ask to take care with heating if they try to rush so that it does not bubble. You are so helpful and kind to share so much with us. Thank you so very very much. Oh, just another thought. I recently created a Deconstructed Art Journal page (see Rosemary Frias Morris on Facebook) using a napkin. napkins come in 2 to 3 layer. Did you peal it down to the top and 1= 2 layers. Or 1 layer period?? Thanks!! I am a new subscriber!!

    • @DesignsbyKellie
      @DesignsbyKellie  9 лет назад

      +Mary Aruksar Hi Mary. I peel it down and just used the top layer. There are 3 layers. The 2nd layer sometimes has a faint image of the top layer if the pattern is dramatic enough and I use that sometimes too. Thanks for subscribing Mary :)

    Thanks for the tip. Have you tried punching them? Just thinking they may still not be firm enough and get stuck in the punch. I suppose it depends on how sharp the punch is. Die cutting should be OK though I would imagine. Hugs to you - Lynn x

      Scrapitydoodah Hello Lynn :o) I haven't yet but as always you make some great points. Die cutting is a great idea too. You're a genius.

      I don't think they're strong enough to punch (in my punches anyway) - but if you place a piece of printer paper behind it and then punch...well, then you've got it made!

      dottygin Hi Gin. What a great idea as book cover. I might seal it with a spray on sealer too just to be safe on a book cover. It might be just fine but just an extra step for your special art work might be worth considering. Big hug!

    Make your own Mod Podge!
    1 cup of PVA glue,
    3 cups of water,
    4-5 tablespoons of WATER Based varnish.
    I glittered a wall using this recipe.

    Hi, is the finished napkin kinda sticky? That is, if you lay two napkins treated this way on top of each other, do they tend to stick to each other? I have this problem when I use gel medium to create image transfers (skins). I have to store them with wax paper between them.

    • @DesignsbyKellie
      @DesignsbyKellie  9 лет назад

      Dianne Blake Yes it does. I plan to spray it with a sealer to fix that but I haven't just yet. I have a couple other ideas that might work nicely too. I'll do a follow up video for sure.

      Even after spraying it with sealer, it's still a bit sticky - not as much, but a little. As long as you're careful, it's all good. 👍

    quick question: If you don't have that nifty non stick mat.... what can you put down to try this technique??

    • @DesignsbyKellie
      @DesignsbyKellie  5 лет назад

      The nonstick mat is basically bakers mat you can get online a little cheaper but maybe try wax paper or parchment, I'm not sure but I would try that. If all else fails use a non stick skillet :)

    • @SargentBubblescom
      @SargentBubblescom 5 лет назад

      I have used freezer paper, was paper and parchment. Not that I'm addicted to this technique...or using the Podge on all sorts of things. Not at all. 😉
