3D Printing a clear battery cover should blend in well as a stop-gap until you find a matching cover.
If clear is not doable, maybe painting it with the same color as the screen frame and buttons would look nice.

Wow. When I was growing up stuff that stopped working got thrown away. Looks like all you had to do was a simple fix. 👌 🇺🇸
I've fixed a gameboy screen by just running my soldering tip along where the ribon cable from the screen has its little pins come in to contact. I literally did it while the thing was on so I could watch what happend to the screen while I did it. While I did it I got a few more fead lines, but I just kept going until all the lines went away and then I stopped and its been good ever since
Watching you fix game consoles etc is more satisfying than slime videos
For the battery cover, have you considered taking a clear replacement and dyeing it using either hobby stained glass paints or fabric dye?
Might take some trial and error to get an exact match, but I’ve seen impressive results using similar methods for custom ordroid-go shells.
for horizontal lines, you can refloat the lcd connection pins with heat.

Great to see you got your hands on this console! When I was young, a friend of mine had an older brother who gave them his old GB Light, and it was this edition; great memories were made with that GB and Mega Man Dr. Wily's Revenge :]

You can resurface that kind of plastic quite a bit for screens using a plastic polishing compound with a fine abrasive in it. I use Novus #2 here with excellent results.
I was thinking while watching this video,
what if you and maybe two other friends bought the same type of Gameboy, and had a challenge of who could get it back to working condition in the least amount of time!
the gameboys would have to be in the same condition with very similar issues, just to make things fair, but I think it would make for an absolutely amazing video!
boil a clear cover with florecent green dye and it it should end up pretty close. just dip in and pull out repeate till color is matched

You were a lifesaver with the alcohol tip! I used it to clear the gunk from my l and r buttons on my sp the other day. The buttons had been unresponsive for the last four years.

I remember these gameboys! I always wanted one growing up because of the size and lite screen. (I had the brick sized one). I never got one because short after was the release of the color. Ah good times.
Great work as always! I love this Game Boy. I got one in great condition for myself (with a battery cover!) a while back. It was a bit pricey, but It's such a nice addition to the collection :)
Quick question for ya-
How do you have your cameras set up? When you're in the shot, I don't see any cameras, but when you do the close up of the Game Boy, it's clearly a first person view. Do you seamlessly splice the footage together, or did you just find a great way to hide another camera?

So a resin printed backplate would be perfect and I happen to have one if you need a replacement.
Speaking of battery covers I still have my battery cover for my Gameboy Advance even though I use a third party battery cover that I think looks better with it
I wish you'd wait until you have the complete build before posting a video. It doesn't give you that feel-good restoration feeling when it doesn't get completed in the end.
You could probably polish most of the scratches from the screen with a bit of rubbing compound and a Dremel with a polish wheel.

For your switches and volume pots. Try Deoxit. MUCH better than isopropyl alcohol.
I bought once from Konsolenkost, it was a Pokemon Ruby (which I was actually quite Happy about), it was *50€* , I was just tired of getting Bootleg Pokemon Games, so I just took the 50€ Option...
So, I was under the impression that the backlight was shot but, it appears you got it working. You may be able to get those lines out of your screen.

Hey Elliot, have you ever considered using contact cleaner? As in electrical contact cleaner? I use the stuff all the time, kind of like a miracle spray.

If you looked around I bet you could find 3D Printer PVA filament in that color or really close. Someone should be able to do the Print of the back plate with it on Shapeways.
Coincidentially I've bought from that German business (it's a real business with a physical shop, I've checked on them in real life) before and they have other stuff that is not as expensive. For instance, there aren't many eBay sellers in Europe that have their relatively low-ish prices on imported games from Japan, albeit they mostly offer loose cartridges/disks sadly.
Still, I would only buy from them as a last resort as most of the time for non-Japanese games there are other sellers with better prices.

Have you ever tried using electronic contact cleaner on the parts you use alcohol on? It leaves no residue and is great cleaning the areas you alcohol in.
That tool kit is so awesome! I just ordered something similar (albeit not as cool)... not sure why, bc I don’t intend to work on many gameboys. But at least now I can :)

Konsolenkost is really bad when it comes to prices... Had my fair share of experience with them as they used to be one of the few retro game suppliers available in Germany back in the day. You can also sell stuff to them, don't know if they pay reasonably.

Try a GB Boy colour and see if it satisfy your needs, backlit pocket/light are kinda dim (and expensive), gba has a better screen and the cool zoom mode but it has an awful design so both have their pro and cons.

Wow the backlight is a lot dimmer than I thought it would be lol.
It is just my lights!
It's great in dark room but if you've got lights or sunlight you dont need to use the backlight as the screen is still reflective :)

Another great video! 👍 That’s a neat case color, I’ve never seen it before. Also, you should try polishing screen plastic sometime. I’ve used a 3M headlight cleaning kit with great results on plastic like that. Just remember that heat is the enemy when polishing plastic, so always wet sand - if you sand at all, something like this I would suggest trying just the foam polishing pad and included rubbing compound on, and keep adding drops of water to the pad to keep the plastic cool. Sticking the plastic down to a flat surface would probably help, and you’ll want to rinse out the rubbing compound from the foam pad and switch to polishing compound for the final polish.

I think you should buy a replacement battery cover (or use a spare one) that’s green just to make it feel complete
Oh boy! Konsolenkost is kind of a joke in the German speaking retro community, as the saying here is that they almost charge as much as a pharmarcy would if they'd sell retro gaming stuff. ;) Also their name is most likely a spin on the meaning of the word "Kost" meaning "fare". So it should be console fare. But "Kost" also means "cost" so I guess this is even more relevant. ;) The sticker on the front also looks like it was put there by the seller prior, but then removed shortly after.
