The fun thing about the cookie run fandom is that we are so accustomed to having emotional and serious moments saying "Sherbert Cookie p-please don't go" in the most emotionally devastated voice and saying stuff like "Hundreds of cookies crumbled in the dark flour war" that is just normal stuff

Meanwhile, I'm just floored that nobody writing the dub script for Golden Wind realized how weird it sounded for Giorno to say "Grazie Dio" when he revived Bruno. "Oh, it means 'thank God' in Italian and this part takes place in Italy!"
Yes, even the dub script-writers were so desensitized to the weird character names that they accidentally had Giorno thank his evil dad for somebody not dying. XD
Centaurworld is this. There is a character who’s backstory involves getting neglected by his parents before getting abandoned, called Derpleton

may i also add: the main character is literally named Horse
Or the character whose entire tribe was killed in a war, leaving her to fend for herself as a child. Name's Wammawink. Though in Centaurworld the goofiness is kind of the point anyway.

The entire mcyt fandom, every subsection of it, but *especially* Hermitcraft
"False" "Stress" "Impulse" "Beef" "Bdubs" "Mumbo Jumbo" at this point I've just learned to tune it out. I do think that "Mythical Sausage" (often just "Sausage") is also a good contender for silly name in serious fics
EDIT: Also Chonny Jash, but specifically the nicknames "Mucka" "Blucka" and "Hen" for Mind, Heart, and Soul respectively. I cannot take ANYTHING seriously with those nicknames

The way I literally giddily clapped and kicked my feet when my fandom of choice was mentioned- it wasn't even characters I particularly like (Killer and Nightmare from UTMV, I don't think the video creator even knows who they are)

Fun fact about 6:43… this is from a musical called The Trail to Oregon, and much like the game it’s based on, the names of the characters are chosen by the audience at the start of every show. In the version on youtube, the rest of the characters are named Jack Bauer, Craphole, and Titty Mitty, and their last name is Dikrats (Starkid backwards, which is the group that wrote the show). When I went to see it, the characters were named Chuck E Cheese, Squeaky When Dry, Jeff Probst, Plastic Bag, and LeBron James, and the last name was Tickle Me Elmo. It was a very good time.

Then, is a tragic twist of fate, the two fight in a final battle for the win of this cruel game of death, the winner being the one who took the other's life first... their names are Scar and Grian btw

Writing a serious Kirby fic and I have to write King Dedede a lot. A fic about corruption in a royal family, keeping secrets and betrayal from someone you love, yet the main character of the fic has the silliest name possible.
(No hate to Dedede, he's one of my favourites, his name is just so goofy it's jarring in serious fics)
For a franchise whose main character is a pink blob named Kirby that acts like a baby it sure has plenty of cosmic horror, deep metaphors of friendship and love, tragedies and the ocasional biblically accurate angel

Dedede isn't even the goofiest name in Kirby. You have characters like Bandana Waddle Dee, Suzie, Max Profitt Haltmann, Ribbon, Gooey...

Being in the Splatoon band fandom when you know Japanese. There’s a group whose names translate to Tears, One Night, Purple, and Clam and somehow I’ve just come to accept it.

also, speaking of that name, one of the main characters in welcome to hell is also named sock. his full name iirc is napoleon maxwell sowachowski, but everyone calls him sock. and it took this comment for me to realize how much i've numbed myself to how silly his name is.

I once wrote a Bugnsax fanfic about a character's boyfriend dying. If you've ever played that game, then you know how ridiculous the names are. In case you don't know what I'm talking about, this is unironically a line said by a character in the fic: "Stay with me, Snorpington!

0:38 Both of the names for Fiddleford is so silly it’s so hard to write portal angst. It’s either McGucket or Fiddleford, and considering one of the other characters names is Ford, you’re damned if you pick either one.
I'm quicky resorting to the intials method not just because of the silly names but also because in a fic that heavily features stan, ford, and fiddleford ,constantly typing stan and ford in different variations is driving me bonkers

And then came Goof Troop, which kind of required to give Goofy and Pete proper names, so you had characters with believable names next to the likes of "Goofy Goof" and "Pete Pete".
I know it was a real name before it was an alcoholic beverage, but that doesn't make the name Margarita any less weird to write.

As an object show writer I have become desensitized to the incredibly descriptive names. But then I have a character in a humanized fic mention The Floor to someone's who's never met The Floor and then I have to write the other character expressing adequate confusion.

This reminds me. Once I read this one horror/action TF2 fanfic which, in one very grim and deathly serious moment, had the villain turn the RED Engineer into a monster and sicced him on his own friends, with a body horror-y description of the transformation. This would probably be a suitably serious moment if the monster that Engineer got turned into in question wasn't the goddamned *Vagineer*, of all freaks to try and make serious.
Doctor Who fic. Kind of hard to write serious fic when you’re writing “The Doctor” “The Master”

writing human aus for that ship is hell because you’re forced to either let them keep their names and have two normal people with titles as names OR give them new names and feel like you’re writing different characters
I don’t think they’re silly as someone who also writes Doctor Who fanfiction. I’ve managed to write some dark stuff with it and not have it sound silly.
what's wrong with that? maybe i've just been desenzitized to the sheer silliness of the show tho lol- also not a character name or fanfiction but i imagine this is how RTD felt writing a serious scene about the Doctor trying to save a creature from genocide and being reminded of himself because he's also the last of his kind... but the creature was just a sentient bunch of baby snot
I don't know if you knew but in the 80s some characters had like the goofiest names ever and it got so bad one showrunner made up fake sources for where he'd gotten the names from so he didn't sound like he just made them up (he did)

Wiggle, Gramble, Floofty, Shellda, Cromdo, Beffica, Triffany, Wambus, Eggabel, Lizbert, Filbo, Chandlo, and Snorpy. And thats not even including last names-- Filbo Fiddlepie, Triffany Lottablog, and Lizbert Megafig are the ones that stuck in my head.
And this game is about trauma, addiction, conspiracy, body horror, and all that.
The fanfics have to content with writing scenes where Chandlo loses Snorpy to a bunch of bugsnax, and Floofty watches on in horror as their brother is killed--
And then, adding onto that, YOU HAVE TO USE BUGSNAX NAMES TOO.
Bunger. Weenieworm. Megamaki. Cwookie. Theres a bugsnax called a cheepoof and these people have to write about it.
Writing a fic about Floofty comforting Snorpy after Chandlo dies was fun, because the names are way too ridiculous for all this angst

adding to the mcyt comments here. my friend got me reading parkour civilization fics and so many of the characters are just never given proper names so they just end up being called Master Friend, Old Man, Parkour Villain, Neighbor, etc. etc.
There’s a reason I don’t write for the htf fandom. Cuddles, Giggles, Toothy, Flippy….

I read an absolutely brilliant Pokémon fanfic that told the story of a Nuzlocke challenge from the Pokémon’s point of view. It was incredibly written, but it was also a bit jarring to read about the tragic demises of such characters as Tinder the Pansear and Lufie the Stunfisk.

This reminds me of the Pokémon fanfic that I'm writing where the main character's Ninetales is named Mrs. Cuddletails (another protagonist has a Delcatty named Lady Lemeow). I'm at the point where I'm writing the Team Flare arc and writing the name "Mrs. Cuddletails" and "Lady Lemeow" in a serious scene is just funny to me.

one issue- toon link isnt JUST windwaker/PH link. hes for some reason ALSO spirit tracks link who is an entirely different person
I once wrote a serious warrior cat fanfic where the main character name was unknown, well we didn’t know if it was Deerkit or Cicadakit because one was dead, and the other was alive but deaf (the MC) and so through the point of view of the deaf one no one was able to know if his name was Deerkit or Cicadakit since he couldn’t hear his name.
So my readers decided to give him a nickname.
Do you know what nickname they choose ?
They named him « Poni » (Petit Objet Non Identifié - Non Identified Little Object) or « Nilo » in English.
And now I can’t continue to write this fanfic without reminding myself that this protag is named Poni or Nilo.

I could never write a skullgirls fic considering a prominent character is named fucking Parasoul. Her younger sister is named umbrella. Oh and there's squigly.

At least it's not his actual legal name, just a nickname. Unfortunately that doesn't make much of a difference, since everyone always calls him Dipper, so finding a context where using his birth name makes sense is pretty much impossible and a lot of readers would probably be confused if you did manage to ("who the hell is Mason?")

The Animation vs. Animator fandom is a lot like this. I got used to it, but it's really silly when the characters are stickmen named after what color they are (Red, Yellow, etc.) or named things like The Dark Lord or Hazard. The worst part is one of the most popular pairs (and the one with probably the most smut written) is between The Dark Lord and The Chosen One. It's called ChoDark (Or Dark Choco)
cookie run fans will write the angstiest fics ever and then the characters in the story are named pure vanilla and shadow milk

It's the best when you wander into a fandom that started in the late 80s to early 90s, so that thing that is now super ridiculous wasn't really meme'd to hell and back when it started. Like, you'll go see a "mad scientist" type woman who has corrupted the concept of energy itself to raise an army of abominations along side her cohort, the guardian of nature gone evil or something and have to come to terms with the fact that an adult sat down and named her Joule kilowatté without even a hint of irony.

Whenever I'm reading Hetalia fan fiction about Greece and it's using his human last name, I have to forget that it literally means watermelon in Greek. It's really hard to unhear someone coming up to Greece and saying like how are you doing, Mr. Karpusi knowing that it's basically saying Mr. Watermelon.
I've even experienced the same exact thing with a Greek name in a book recently, where the character name is Kairos and this word in modern Greek basically means weather or time. It's not a name at all. I wish more authors would actually look up what our real names and last names in Greek are, and stop making fans suffer.
The author of Hetalia genuinely sometimes does not do the research. How about giving Ukraine a personality besides "super kind"? Nope, just take the boobs joke. Oh, don't get me started about Poland. Rain world person here, and when majority of the characters are named nouns you kinda get used to it. Though i feel people outside the fandom would turn their head hearing a character is named "Five Pebbles", or "Looks to the Moon". Not the goofiest of course but it's kinda funny looking back on it now

Like, yeah, Snow White and Ripple are pretty normal names for protagonists, as far as novels go. I've heard worse. Hardgore Alice (yes, "Hardgore"; with a "G") is... less heroic-sounding, I'll admit.
And then the most threatening characters who all the others are afraid-of are named Swim Swim and Cranberry. For bonus-points, Cranberry's full title is "Musician of the Forest, Cranberry" and this is usually how the narration refers to her.

Me when Mao Mao: Heroes of Pure Heart. Not only is the main character’s first name literally Mao Mao, but his family’s last name is Mao, so his legal name is legitimately Mao Mao Mao! This guy in canon alone has some of the most beautifully and devastatingly written arcs of neglect, trauma, inadequacy, and loneliness with which you can do so much (not to mention the parts of the story we never got to see with the show being cancelled so prematurely), and his name is freaking MAO MAO MAO!
I love it when characters in cartoons have silly names and traumatic backstories. Phineas and Ferb does this too with Heinz Doofenshmirtz (seriously, the amount of trauma that guy went through as a kid is impressive).

Certainly! The Japanese side of the Transformers fandom really really liked toys with gimmicks. One of these was Transformers with detachable/swappable chest-plates that could turn into separate animals and/or handheld blasters to assist their main Transformer, kinda like the Minicons from Transformers Armada. Japan, being not so great at coming up with cool English names, named this team 'Breastforce'. They are actually the villainous elite force of one of the most evil Transformer villains ever...named Deathsaurus.
Almost all of the imps in Helluva Boss have stupid names. We got Barbie Wire, Blitz with a silent O, and Fizzarolli (just to name a few). Just, why??

I love vocaloid and related fandom fanfics but sometimes I do have to take a step back because some names can just be a bit weird. Ironically, vocaloid is probably one of the better ones for names, you do have some weird ones like Big Al, Sweet An, flower and King plus some ridiculously normal names thrown in like Lola or Kaori but overall it's alrightish.
Probably the weirdest Vocaloid name are for the limited Beta Voicebanks, special mention to multiβ-N, of which there are 17 (from F00 to F11 and M00 to M04) but when compared to something like Neutrino's Seven, SynthV's NineZero and Sinsy's f00005j is... still weird but at least they're semi normal and don't contain 17 characters and the beta symbol.
...I mean Multi, Nine and f00005j don't have character designs but I doubt that'll stop fanfic writers in the future.
Plus if you're looking for weird names, you always have UTAU. Hi Semicolon (probably the more normal name she has, her other name is Crysanthemum Emily Samara the 21st).
I'm in the Pokémon fandom. I gotta deal with chatacters with names like "Lt Surge" and "Ryme" (she's a musician because of course she is. And her sister is named Tyme), and "Ghetsis" and "Natural Harmonia Gropius" and "Adaman" and "The Go-Rock Quads" (individually they have ordinary names but still) and "Miror B" and "Snattle"

My most recent loves are characters who don't have names of their own. They're robots based on scientists named Sada and Turo, so they're just called "AI Sada" and "AI Turo" and if you're writing them interacting with their creators then it gets REALLY weird. Even if you say "the AI", it's so impersonal.
Sometimes I forget N not only has a full name but it's the most ridiculous thing ever. No wonder everyone just calls the guy N. Imagine how the games would go if they actually said his name
4:38 To be fair, this character is over 80 years old and when he was created, it was a perfectly normal sounding name. But then semantic shift happened and now it sounds goofy. But the character is too well established & iconic so they can't really change it either.

I think for a modern au/interpretation you could just say that his parents didn't have English as the first language so it didn't automatically sound goofy to them & then he didn't want to change it because he would want to hold on to anything that connects him to his parents.
