This was from 2009, so yes it was a 'modern performance'... the song 'Seek & destroy' was from their 1st album "Kill 'em all" in 1983, so intensity nowadays is not quite what it used to be for Metallica circa the 80's. But Metallica is still the most popular metal band in the world after 4 decades of career... Credit where credit is due...(And they never wear masks on stage... this was for that halloween show, I guess).
Metallica worked their way up from the clubs in L.A. and San Francisco to the arenas of the world on their workload... They also had the songs and the attitude that endeared them to metal fans worldwide early on.
    Brief history:
The core of the band has been the unlikely duo of James Hetfield (vocals & guitar) and Lars Ulrich (drums)... the 2 met in 1981 in the L.A. scene and were different by far - James came from a broken home in California, raised by strict Christian parents and had endured abuse and loss after his father left home and then his mom died... Lars was the only son of a Danish tennis pro who immigrated to the US. Lars could barely play drums, but he had connections to the metal scene & tape traders and convinced James to record a demo song in 1981 for a local label Metal Blade Records, which ended up on a compilation release 'Metal massacre'... Lars took the name Metallica from a friend who was starting a metal fanzine... In 1982, Metallica played their first show in L.A. w/ Dave Mustaine (lead guitar) and Ron McGovney (bass)... They started writing original songs and made a demo that year which circulated around the country.
In 1983, Metallica relocated to San Francisco so that Cliff Burton (bass) could join them... A trip to New York City that year to record their first album resulted in Dave Mustaine being fired and Kirk Hammett (lead guitar) replacing him and recording his parts for their first album "Kill 'em all" in 1983, released on Megaforce Records.
Dave Mustaine returned to L.A. and formed Megadeth in retaliation... their debut album was released in 1985.
Metallica set the pace for the thrash metal scene in the 80's, leading the pack of bands that played this brand of fast and furious metal... 2nd album 'Ride the Lightning' was released in 1984 and the band was always touring America or Europe. 3rd album 'Master of Puppets' was the big breakthrough in 1986 as Metallica opened an arena tour for Ozzy Osbourne... the album sold gold in the US (half million copies).
Tragedy struck Metallica on tour in Europe in 1986... a bus accident in Sweden took the life of bassist Cliff Burton at age 24.
A devastated and inebriated Metallica opted to carry on w/ Jason Newsted (bass) joining the band and finishing the tour... releasing a covers EP in 1987... They released 4th album 'And justice for all' in 1988 and were blowing away their competition on tour that year and launched their first arena headline tour in 1989 and their first music video 'One' on MTV... the album sold 2x platinum in the US (2 million copies).
Hoping to break even bigger, the band recorded their self titled 5th album in 1991 (often called the 'black' album) and made the songs more accessible and not thrash metal like previous albums. It made #1 on the charts and sold over 16 million copies to date in the US w/ 5 MTV music video singles. Metallica spent years touring on that record, finally ending the run of tour dates in 1994 before taking a break.
Recording enough songs for 2 albums, Metallica emerged w/ the album 'Load' in 1996 but had drastically changed their image w/ short hair and a commercial sound that fans were not too happy with... but still sold 5x platinum, followed by 'Reload' in 1997... Then, a double CD of cover songs in 1998 w/ the title 'Garage Inc'... Their most successful era was capped w/ a live CD performed w/ a full classical orchestra, released in 1999 as 'S&M'.
But the problem in the band had gotten worse w/ time... bassist Jason Newsted quit the band in 2001. Metallica attempted to record a new album, but James Hetfield ended up in rehab for alcoholism. The finished album 'St. Anger' in 2003 was supposed to be a return to thrash metal, but the sessions had been shaky and the under-produced record was universally slagged... Only a small minority of Metallica fans cherish 'St. Anger'... Robert Trujillo (bass) joined Metallica in 2003 for the tour. The band tried again in 2008 w/ 'Death Magnetic' and it was better received... (This Quebec concert was filmed on that tour). They would also play the 'Big Four' (of thrash metal) shows, uniting Metallica on the same stage w/ Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax at several festivals...
Metallica attempted a 3D concert movie 'Through the never' in 2013... but it flopped in theaters. Their attempt at launching their own Orion Music Festival was a financial disaster as well.
Metallica's long awaited new album 'Hardwired to self-destruct' was finally released in 2016 and got a good response overall... After the pandemic, Metallica announced the 2023 release of their new album '72 Seasons' and return to touring.

James Hetfield is up there with the greatest front man in history music. It’s so crazy, Those of us who started listening in 80’s was a band for weirdos, today, they are the biggest rock band in the world. They and TOOL (who please god do a tool reaction) are the bands the world seemed to really acknowledge their greatness these days.

I would say if you choose to do Iron Maiden then Hallowed Be Thy Name live at the Hammersmith in 1982 would be the performance to go with. It has been reacted to by just about every channel that I've seen for good reason. It was at a point in the band's legendary history where they were looking to take over the world with raw talent, energy and showmanship. They're too important of a group to gloss over.
