The song is a conversation between an addict and their drug of choice. The slowdown in the middle is the euphoric high of giving in. Then as the high wears off the music becomes frantic again.

Metallica is a special band. For some of us they provided the soundtrack to our teenage years back in the 80s. We've grown up with them our whole lives. And they are still out there killing it! I hope your generation gets to experience something like that. It's priceless.

I’ve been to about 17 Metallica concerts in my life, starting back in 1986 on the tour for Master of Puppets, when they were opening for Ozzy. It was the only time I got to see Cliff Burton live, as he died later that year in a tour bus accident. They are, by far, one of the best live bands out there. They appreciate their fans and give everything they have during a show. The energy in the air is palpable, and they feed off the crowds energy as the crowd gives that energy back. It’s very hard to describe the feeling of being at a Metallica concert and just how the air feels.
James Hetfield, the singer and rhythm guitarist was a huge inspiration for me when I was a teenager. It was Metallica, and specifically his playing, that inspired me to learn how to play guitar. During my High School years, guitar became an extremely important emotional outlet for me. I was mercilessly bullied in HS, I had several people who were relentless and the school wouldn’t do anything about it. I was pushed to the edge where I really didn’t want to live any longer. If it weren’t for Metallica and being able to come home, throw on an album and play through it on guitar, which let me really vent my emotions, I wouldn’t be here. Some days were so bad that I’d play through 4 albums back to back, 8 hours or more of just playing Metallica. I can truthfully say that the band really did save my life.
On this tour, the Death Magnetic tour of 2009, I had become disabled due to an accident just a year prior. I was depressed, and in a really bad place mentally. After decades of entering my name into the Metallica Club contest to win a meet and greet pass, I finally won. I got to meet the band before the show, and this was a lifelong dream for me. I finally got to tell James, to his face, just how much the band and he himself had done for me. All four of them were extremely nice, listened to me and genuinely made me feel like I wasn’t “just some fan”. Lars was actually the nicest of them. Kirk was really low key and fairly shy. Rob was so incredibly friendly and seemed just stoked to be there.
Anyway…that’s my story. Meeting them was a life long goal and dream. That concert was made even more special because my then 70 year old dad came with me. It was the first music concert he’d ever attended, and he remarked about what I said about the energy in the air. He really enjoyed the concert and it’s a memory I’ll cherish for the rest of my life. He passed away on 10/8/2017, and the memories we made that night are even more special to me now. Thanks for being there pops, I miss you.

2004, Sweden. My first Metallica-concert. The audience was so loud, that the band couldn't hear themselves play to the extent they needed to, even with their own electronics. So what did the organiser do? He was forced to turn up the volume. Problem was that there is a law which states you are not allowed to play louder than a certain decibel. In the newspaper the day after, the organiser had to pay 10.000 bucks in damages. That's how popular Metallica is.

The people are singing for two things, one is audience participation, this is something highly common from metal and glam bands of the 1980's, and Metallica is one of them. So when you watch a old rock band from back then with a crowd, it is common thing, so it isn't a surprise. Reason two is, this is a mix crowd of new and old gen people. So you have the ones that grew up and been listening to Metallica and going to concerts since the 80's(this is the group the band is directing to sing because it is expected as in tradition 'rock concert'), and those who have learned who the band is not long ago....

Prince made me want to learn guitar; Lars makes me want to learn drums. When I retire, I'm buying both.

I'd only ever listened to the studio version of this song. My son raved about it. I thought, yeah, it's a good song, I like it. But never got his enthusiasm. Anyway, 2017, they're playing London O2. We have tickets. My first Metallica gig. They play this (of course), and I 'got it'. The sheer energy created. Absolutely caught up with my boy's enthusiasm. We got to see them again in 2019 at Twickenham.

Metallica has a number of songs with great audience participation. "Seek and Destroy" and "Creeping Death" have a lot of crowd singing parts, for example. . . . James doesn't do many solos, but he is very melodic when he does them.
Speaking of crowd participation, check out Blind Guardian performing "The Bard's Song" at Wacken Open Air (WOA). It's a live performance like when you reacted to Jinjer a few months back. The audience carries "The Bard's Song" with little input from the singer. It's magical, really.

I seen them on that tour. I think it was 2009 when they played in the round. I ended up with a guitar pic and two Metallica beach balls that fell from the ceiling that I made $100 a piece off of. , but I kept the bad ass guitar pick

This song was added to the United States congressional library by congress to preserve it for all time because its so important and relevant to so many people since it's about drug addiction, the master being the drug and the addict being the puppet. Thought that was pretty cool when I found that out.

So, here's some other info about this song, and the album in general.... This album is in the library of Congress in the US. It is considered a significant piece of art in history. that's pretty awesome. Metallica has gone through a lot of turmoil in their long career... from substance abuse/dependency, losing members, fan backlash. The first four albums.. considered by most fans to be the best albums... of course this is subjective... but the first four albums were co written with the original Bass player, Cliff Burton, who was arguably the true soul of Metallica. He died in a bus accident while they were touring in Europe for this album. The band eventually replaced him, and then replaced that guy too, ending up with the bassist they have now, Robert Trujillo. Anyway, the first four albums are Kill Em All, Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets and ..And Justice for all. All of them are amazing, ans you could easily do a reaction to every song and have people screaming for more. I'm really glad you're enjoying your foray into Metallica. Also, their new album sounds a lot like the older stuff, so may even want to check that out as well.

Can't believe there's not more people mentionning the 89' show in seattle that was filmed, it is the best metallica performance ever recorded, James Hetfield was untouchable back then.
