Today I disassembled an MS261 with relatively low hours. It has been run primarily on Motomix, and occasionally non-ethanol fuel with Ultra. This was an unplanned video, but I see this kinda stuff all too often. Have a look at the video I posted back in April of this year. It highlights a BG55 blower with a clogged spark arrestor. It's another very common issue from running Ultra.

      @michaelconley3826 2 года назад +10

Spark arrestor get clogged from excessive idling, clogging a spark arrestor has nothing to do with the type of oil. And in your video you say the cylinder has no oil, then you say there is too much in the spark arrestor, so which is it?

    • @richardflagg3084

@@michaelconley3826 Ultra, in most circumstances, leaves more carbon than other "more forgiving" high quality oils when the user doesn't "run it right". I said the crankcase was "dry as a popcorn fart" which is typical when you run this oil.
I've done several videos highlighting how this oil leaves a lot of carbon. Have a look and decide for yourself. I'm just documenting what I see on a regular basis.

I’m afraid to run much less oil than 32 to 1, and I tend to run rich(er) mixtures as well. The light haze at starting is *reassuring* - “I didn’t forget the oil.”
I also have used *only* bike oils in the past, e.g. MC1+ in the weed eater, at 32 to 1 - which is no longer available - and Maxima K2 in the Zenoah.

I do a lot of cutting. I also was a suspension development rider racing two stroke motorcycles. I have used both types of Stihl oil for years with no problem. I have also seen research done on two stroke oils. Also had a discussion with Mitch from Pro Cicuit Racing. I can tell you the two best oils are Castrol 747 and Maxima 727 oils to mix with your gas. All would recommend mixing more oil the 50-1. However they may not with a saw that controls your jetting. When you add more oil it leans out your air fuel mixture which could cause damage. I use to run maxima 32-1 with turbo blue in a Stihl 440 for years. The local chainsaw dealer saw my saws internals and ask what I was using. Maxima 727 was the best they ever saw. However it cost 20 dollars a bottle in the late 80s. However it is a gallon bottle. Castrol 747 is very hard to find. It is made in Europe. The numbers signify the number of parts of synthetic, Castrol bean oil and standard oil. You also get a great smell from burning bean oil. The bean oil creates a much better seal with your rings creating more horsepower. The synthetic creates the ability for it to handle much higher temperatures. Synthetic oils are made from a type of natural gas called wet gas. We burn dry natural gas in our stoves. It does provide lubrication. It will not be a thick oil coating. Bean oil can also cause your engine to build up more carbon. Synthetic oil also usually cause your engine to run at a little higher temperature the oil made from crude. But they can protect your motor at much higher temperatures then a crude type oil can.

I have a 290 that has cut well over 100 full cords. I've used 30w motor oil as well as every crap oil known to man. My saw has almost no carbon and 0 scratches or marks of any kind on the piston. I always run it hard and put it away wet. Probably only cleaned the air filter 3 times in 13 years, not because it was bogging but because I thought I probably should. The 290 runs just as strong as it did when new. I have a 2 year old 400 now, but still use the 290 on smaller trees. IMO the 290 is the best homeowner saw ever made. Motor oil works just fine, just smoked a little bit. Different manufacturers always say their oil is best but I'd bet it all comes from the same place, then gets additives and coloring agent's, and heavy marketing.

Been on wildland fire crews for 22 years. We generally run 044/440s, 046/460s, 461s, 462s, and the 500i. These saws see hard use day in, day out all summer long. I've been on several crews over the years, but the average fleet is around 40 saws. We all ran HP oil until the ultra came out, then made the switch. In all of these years and all of these saws, I've seen 3 bottom end failures. 1 big end rod bearing in a 10mm 044 (on HP oil), 1 bearing cage disintegrated on a 460, and 1 bearing seizure on a 461 with less than 3 tanks through it. (Heard of more similar failures on brand new 461s when they first came out) The majority ot the hours on these saws are high revs cutting brush.
Only mitigating factor is that we mix fuel in 5 gallon Jerry cans that don't quite hold 5 gallons. Bottom ends aren't as wet as when I've torn down my dirtbike and snowmobile engines running Amsoil interceptor, but not seeing failures either.

Ran stihl oil all my life. One of the best oils I've used it's got such a high flash point because saws are meant to run full throttle. The other stuff is meant to burn up and not foul everything up at idle so it won't lubricate well at higher rpms. That's why the stihl oil does so well and is alot thinner. You dont need much oil it just needs to be there. Thats my opinion I'm no expert either.

Me and half dozen small business owners will all tell you that oil is absolute garbage.from the pond color to the clogging spark arrestor s and what Richard clearly shows.i worked on m any big name companies, crews from Wisconsin, Illinois, st,louis,Arizona Mississippi all over country and I've taken brand new saws and weed eaters blower xxxctra ,and watched that oil get put in them and almost instantly first tank start acting up bogging clogging, and much worse .had 2 lawn companies last year ask me to look at their equipment and instantly I knew the problem. That oil .cleaned out exhausts and topends ,plugs ,rinsed tanks and filters put red armor ,or vp,maxima in them and boom problem gone..I' run tree service and landscaping company and mow commercial plus 45 residential s ,by myself mostly and over last 27 years have become safe tree mechanic nothing like Richard. At all,but to say he's angry and poke someone who's making a valid point and doing a service is ridiculous. No companies I know here in east Tennessee EVER USE THAT OIL,they buy the pack for warranty and toss it on a shelf.the ones that do there tools are for sure in local shop.and chainsaw s newer ones are not same animal as old ones.ive told people for years that oil is terrible. True fuels right behind .and since being honest 75 percent of guys don't take care of their equipment and would be afraid to let them touch mine.Especially,my chainsaws they stay right next to me never out of site .they go behind the bed at night and in back seat.most men do this with guns ..But guns don't make me a living ,saws do.and they don't get me arrested .just saying .I've seen a dozen mechanics warn don't use that oil unless it's in 4 mix engines .I don't know anyone who uses equipment for a living that runs that oil in dozen states .same goes for Husqvarna xp tried it once ,and never again.aaron lynch just did video of a 5 year saw using 927 and piston was spotless 4 years I meant.THE REASON THEY DOUBLE THE WARRNTY is corporate not because it's great oil .they want your tools in the shop .same as casino wants you to keep playing .sounds like Jody is fan boy or just wanting start trouble I would trust Richard any day with advice on equipment .go ask jack at hotsaws 101 what he thinks about stihl ultra 30 year logger and saw builder.i was raised in tree service big brother had 2 of them in Wisconsin, illnios .both.and even the stihl fan boy crews did not run stihl oil.nor husky .after 28 years in this work .best products are never the biggest names.all have flaws .and CASTROL makes stihl oil it's same as there motor cycle oil. As seen in other comments, these things run at 100% which doesn't give any oil that much time to cling. The difference between 40:1 and 50:1 is one tablespoon per gallon which isn't enough on it's own to clog a spark arrestor with a better oil. Your crankshaft and bearings will thank you.

I always use non-oxygenated fuel and mix it at 50:1 using a ratio-rite. Lawn mower carb gets run dry cause it sits outside up at the lake. 1 Pull start after winter or any storage. Stihl 028 that sits up at the lake, uses the lawn mower gas. It has sat over winter also. Never fails to start and runs has run perfect for 15+ yrs. Any motorized "toy" that sits for more than a month should never be left with Oxygenated fuel. Im a former PowerSports service manager, still a backyard guy but have seen way to many issues in any motor for this fuel and non-use. In a unrelated subject, when he was checking his spark plugs, white/grey is indicating a lean fuel mixture. Light brown is perfect, light carbon is ok. Yamaha Oil is good oil at a fair price.

For husky weed eater and chainsaw, I run 50:1 Motul road racing 800 2t with 2 ounces of seafoam in every gallon of regular 10 percent ethanol gasoline. My husky weed eater gets run every day all summer long...been running it on this mix for 6 years and no carbon buildup. Before I ran it on amsoil saber 50:1 with 2 ounces of seafoam per gallon, and regular pump 10% ethanol. This little 2 stroke has never had carbon deposits anywhere. So far I've not had to replace any parts except spark plug and air filter.

I was in the oil and lube business for 28 years. Tcw
3 is a water cooled two stroke oil , it more viscosity and zinc, plus a higher flash point.
I have used it in trimer blower for testing. 🤙may have to tune carb, and ( clean screen in muffler) first two tanks of fuel.
The chain saws, I run synthetic oil. It has a great boundary coating on parts, and three is less smoke, and no buildup on screen in muffler. I mix’s about 40-45 to 1.
Keep testing and let people know what you find. Very nice video.

You're right about that. If you're running a blower (only to clean off your deck/porch/carport), hedgetrimmer or a weedeater it's not going to be at WOT long enough to maintain full operating temp. Many other oils will be more forgiving under this type of operation.

And I’ve seen many videos online that have done testing on the pre-mixes and they say the Stihl Moto mix is actually one of the best fuels out there for premix and yes I know it cost more actually a lot more lol but that’s all my saws have had run in them because where I live didn’t have ethanol free gas anywhere for a long time and I wasn’t gonna run ethanol through my saws and have never had any issues so far.

I haven't bought a lot of 2-stroke oils for my saw but the main one I've ran when I'd mix up fuel was AmsOil Saber and I've had no problems within the 5 years of owning my MS251. I can't speak for film strength as I don't have the resources to just tear it down for the fun of it and see. But it has loads of compression and it's not making any funny noises so it must be working just fine. The only other thing I've ran is the small pre-mixed cans of Tru-Fuel 50:1 for when I'm not doing much cutting and I don't need a lot of gas made up. I've been curious about giving Red Line a try so I'll have to order some eventually.

We get 5 gallon pails, mix it in barrels, fuel our jugs from there.

Bear in mind I'm an older version of you with nigh 60 years of small engine work. Not bragging but fact. As you said the crankcase looks dry but that could be from low octane fuel. When the E85 fuel came out, you guessed it, someone tried it then got mad when called on it. In my saws I used AV gas at 40-1. Pricier yes but there's no additives & lasts a very long time. We've always had a problem of people not listening.

It is twice as expensive, but it does come in 1 shot bottles or qts. Richard if you like Schaeffer's 2cycle you would really like their other stuff!

That is exactly what I use, the "pond water" as you called it. It's the green HP Ultra. Just bought a new 800 Magnum Blower and they extended the warranty with this purchase by buying this oil. Regardless of oil, too many people, are lax when mixing it, guessing at how much oil they have poured in the gas jug, using cheap 87 octane, ethanol gas, or loaning saws, or cutting with other people and using their who knows what's in it gas.
