Used to play the tour v in my apex pros. Loved it, bought new irons during Covid and wasn’t able to get the tour V shafts, now I’m playing the $-taper and I love them. Never loved the kbs tour shafts, always felt ringing in my hands.
I use Cobra Forged Tec and found KBS $ taper 120 best on 4-8 Irons, and True Temper Amt Black Onyx S300 on 9-Wedges. For me, couldn't be happier with the mix and really improved my game.
hey Trottie - you can use the Mitchell Swingweight scale to get total/dead weight as well - lay the club perpendicular to the scale on the black V (close to the adjustable balance weight), and then slide the weight back and forth to get total weight.
@@LBODryPowder 3 degrees down and that much spin? Not much left to do tbh, maybe x7 shafts or a lower spin modus, pro v1x left dash maybe? You play a cut?
Tour V was designed by KB as a higher launching (more active tip) for the late release of Phil Mickelson. He was a user of the OG PX Satin which was discontinued when TT bought Royal Precision. I find the lighter options amazing for Tour V because other similar profiles like Modus 130 or Nippon 850 GH Neo fall on the heavier/lighter end of the weight spectrum. Love this perspective especially at better players “stuck at 130g”. For what it’s worth, Phil plays the Tour Issue 125X Tour V (has won majors with it) while Vik plays the non-TI 120X.
I got fitted for the KBS tour v 130x swing speed with 7 iron is 92-94 mph been struggling with them do you recommend going down to a stiff or lowering the weight?
Got fit for Tour V shafts recently, just had better dispersion and efficiency than anything I tried, all the way up to and including the new Axiom shafts
I was playing 130x $ taper for a season or two and wanted something a little lighter. I ended up getting fitted in to LA golf L series 120 stiff. Once the clubs were delivered I was surprised to see the LA golf total weight was 10 grams heavier than the 130 $ taper. I was confused. I did some digging and I found out the balance point in the LA golf is so high in the handle they had to add a considerable amount of weight to shaft tip to achieve a SW of D3. Once the average single digit handicappers figure out what swing weight is, I believe the fitting game will get way more complicated. different heads have different weights and swing weight directly affects shaft flex... most manufacturers won't honor a real swing weight request, and club champion charges 3k for a set of irons. its wild out here.
Had Tour V 110 in a set of BH Wedges and they were quite ok but I ended up changing them to KBS 610 also 110 weight but a softer feel at least in my hands. Still playing light weight shafts in my p760 irons but it's Modus 105.
I had KBS Tour V shafts for a short while. They felt fantastic and I could feel the lead deflection through impact but they spun so much it cost me a lot of distance. I got out of the Tour V pretty quickly and went in the Project X LZ 6.5 125g instead .... massive gains in ball flight and spin control.
I am a ping zz65 die hard. The first low weight, low spin shaft for smooth swingers who have high club head speed. Just put the 110 tour v S in some heads and They are softer than the zz65, however, not hooking and delivering very similar ball flight with less spin, so for 2024, it might be time to change. I am 53 now, yet still have similar numbers to Padraig, who is using the tour v at 125, the Phil shaft. I have tried that shaft and it requires me to go at 90+%, which isn’t fun for long. Also, liking the tour v 125 in my SW and LW, due to lower flight vs the tour 120. Anyway, hats off to ping for creating the zz65…..decades ahead of its time, it’s discontinued now, kbs has a great product line for everybody it appears
ZZ65 is great. Feels so good. Still used on tour. It was just a 120 gram Dynamic Gold right? I think the DG120 are similar. Apex 4 Hogan shaft was a legend too. Try Temper made them all.
Loved the video, Trottie! Could you give your opinion on using the Project X LS shafts (or just stepless shafts in general) for wedges? I have been gaming them for my irons and love them, but the feel is significantly worse in my wedges compared to the S300s I was gaming in them before. Thank you
Do they feel dead / no feel? I would suggest increasing the swing weight before you start to panic or change anything. Then I’d check the flex on them, you might be playing too stiff (increase swing weight to help) , I played stepless PX IO for quite some time but I didn’t go stepless in the wedges I used to play S4’s & wouldn’t move off that. In recent months I had a wedge fitting and went KBS 610, I spin wedges a lot so for me they were amazing but I was also blown away by the KBS facility. Take a look , take my advice as you find it. Bottom line swing weight first then if still not cool you gotta throw some steps in there & I’d start 610’s depending on how much you spin it m.ruclips.net/video/vPutQN1MiAI/видео.html&pp=ygUZVHJvdHRpZWdvbGYgd2VkZ2UgZml0dGluZw%3D%3D

how would you compare a stepless golf shaft to a stepped shaft playing at the same saing weight? is it just a feel preference or could it actually move strike pattern to any significance?
Ill have to give them a go. I play tour 120s in one set of irons on calm low wind days and S300s in another set on windy days. I live in Ryan Palmer land, Amarillo in the Texas Panhandle where 10 to 20 mph is a good day and 20 to 30 with gusts to 45 happens 3 times a week. What type of shaft would use for these windy all the time conditions?
I grew up at Hoylake where the Open was played so I've always kept the ball down. I played the heavier option in the wind and back then I used a blade. When I moved to Asia and then the US I wanted more height, at that point was when I went lighter and a cavity back. The initial lightweight shafts spun too much so on windy days I'd stall out. Then the TP5X came out and solved that and I light weight shafts developed like the Tour V 110. I see where you're trying to go but having two different shafts I don't love, I think you gotta go strong lofts, consider ball and then 115g up works dependent on your speed. That would be my start point. I love that you're testing and on the two set ups but I reckon you can get into 1
I haven't played the 105 but I think this will be a fraction stiffer as it's very stable for the weight & the 105 from DG I would assume is going to kick a fraction more as it doesn't have the taper rate of the Tour V. Not a bad thing, neither is wrong, you just need to know what you need as a PLYR
My current set up is always in the description (albeit could change soon) I play the Tour V in my PW and then the 610 in the higher lofts. This is a solid vid to watch: ruclips.net/video/vPutQN1MiAI/видео.htmlsi=UE85I2GWuWohGe82
120 X. Victor has a lot of speed, medium loader. Phil and Paddy play the 125 S+ Tour V, which is much rarer. There is even a 130 Tour V, which must be getting hyper stiff, however, Victor plays that in his wedges, not sure if he is soft stepping with 8 iron, or wants super stiff and heavy to get low flight and control with his wedges. They have a standard tour v wedge S at 125 which I play and it’s stout, yet feels nice like it’s softer at impact, nice lower flight, but not too low. The holy grail of any shaft is having it feel active and easy to swing, yet, it hits a penetrating flight. As Trottie says, the tour V tries to get there, with lower weight

If swing weight is the same but the dead weight is different, will that mean that the MOI of the club as a whole will be different?
That will have a lot to do with head design , personally I think it’ll be feel more than MOI impact
How does the shaft magically make the ball struggle in the wind? I cant imagine a shaft change in an iron is going to alter spin that much.
it impacts dynamic loft which then impacts ball launch and flight
Would that be a alternative to KBS Tour 90 as they don’t produce the Tour 90 no more?
I'd have to ask. I'm not sure as it doesn't deadweight 110 it's a fraction heavier
Tour 90 S is 102, such a shame they don’t produce it anymore
