Emirates Is FORCED To Use Its A380’s. Here’s WHY!

  • From Emirates’ huge problems to its pre-ordered aircraft issues that literally got screwed up, these are the reasons why Emirates Is Forced to use A380’s.
And we gotta start with its aircraft delays. Emirates won’t get any of their 200+ already ordered planes before 2024. This leaves the airline with only two types of aircraft in its fleet, the Boeing 777 and Airbus A380.
But this situation actually became a blessing in disguise for the airline, as they had no choice but to fly A380’s to several new destinations as well.

The A380 is hugely favorable to Emirates in high density destinations with slot restrictions (like LHR, CDG and FRA). That’s why Emirates has a soft spot for these giant birds.

The most comfortable flight I've ever experienced is on an A380, on long haul flights comfort is a prime factor.

I agree! The planes do a great job at smoothing out turbulence. And far more comfortable than the B777 with its 3-4-3 economy seat layout. The 777 economy experience was fine when they used 3-3-3 economy layout.

Did you fly non-stop or direct with stops, the word direct does not mean non-stop in airline speak.
There is a non-stop flight Saigon/Heathrow but it's with an airline I fell out with, so going with Emirates again, plus I had credit and lots of airmiles to use with them.

I decided to fly with Emirates to try out the A380, I live near Ho Chi Minh and often visit the UK. Birmingham is the most convenient airport for me and so Emiraite hit two buttons.
The first leg is on a B777 and business class seat convert to a coffin type bed. I might be old at 77 but not ready for the box, with a 11 pm departure and a few drinks in the lounge, a bite to eat on board. Now ready for a kip but it's like sleep at attention as some army expect injured troop to do in hospital.
Arrived at Dubai had a shower and washed away the 777 experience and later boarded the A380, this was not a plane it was a cruise liner. Better seating design that allowed turning in bed, a lounge at the rear of the cabin so a quick night cap while the crew made up my bed. I also used the bar area for a sit at the table meal. this reminded me of a flight back in 1952 on a BOAC plane from W Africa where the seat was train like with a table between the forward and back facing seats.
Now for me it's the cabin and the cabin crew that makes me decide on which airline to choose, also how well I'm looked after at the arriving airport. Birmingham has lost with the trolley charge of a pound, it's not the cost but the inconvenience of having a pound coin ready. How many of the wonderful foreign visitor to UK have a pound coin ready. Just a small thing like that can ruin a company's reputation. Birmingham you have lost me as it was also 300 od pound dearer to land there than Heathrow. Will be doing this trip April a month away to HEATHROW.

Because I can't understand how could the A380 be a fiasco when Emirates are renovating the fatigued wing spars, changing the used landing gears, and even renovating and improving their business model by redesigning interiors. And besides that, it's well known that users prefer the A380 because its confort and roominess.

Emirate's new cabin looks fab. Their old economy class was pretty good, new one looks amazing. For the money, it's look difficult to beat.
It's beginning to look like the 777X or A350 won't be big enough, and that the A380's carrying capacity is beginning to come into its own. For example, if Emirates were to replace all A380's with 777X, they'd have to fly a lot more of them. This isn't an option into a lot of Emirate's key destinations, like London Heathrow; there simply aren't the landing slots available. Worse, the quality drops; an A380 carries more passengers with loads of room per pax, even in economy. The 777X carries fewer people, and crams them in tight whilst doing so.
So for some airlines, especially Emirates, they look like being totally dependent on A380 for a long time to come. Apparently the airline has said that, even now, they need more A380's than they've currently got. If the up tick in traffic is sustained, and A380's capacity remains necessary, there is going to be serious pressure for more to be manufactured.
A reason that might happen is, Rolls Royce's Ultrafan engine. They've been doing a ton of flight test, it's rumoured to be excellent, and now they're building a production version. But, for what aircraft? There's nothing new in the pipeline, that we know about. This invites speculation! Coming next, speculation...
The A380 is already a serious economic proposition on any route - Ok, slightly thirsty, but offers something unique and apparently popular and surprisingly competitive if you can sell every seat. An A380neo - even an old A380 with replacement engines - would be a serious game changer: significantly more economic, and still big / high capacity / luxurious. I think that we're going to see Ultrafan on some surprising airframes - like existing A380's - so long as Emirates see continued growth in demand.
Airbus may well neo-ise the A380 and build a few more. A sort-of precedent is the A330neo. The result is actually pretty good; price competitive against 787 (who'd have thought?), a good product, popular with passengers who've flown on it. More importantly, it was pretty cheap for Airbus to do it. It would be quite a lot of money to reactivate A380 production - they'd have to find somewhere else to make all those A320s for a start. But I really cannot see any viable alternative, if one of the busiest airlines with hundreds of A380s is to keep growing, or even maintain current passenger numbers. It's probably possible for Emirates to make it worthwhile for Airbus.

I don't think they have a problem at all. Emirates make most of their money from the airport not from the planes. They need the biggest planes they can get to bring the passengers into their almost exclusive airport to drain them of their money before sending them onto their final destination! Plus a lot of their passengers choose them specifically because they have the A380s operating to and from their airport of choice. The passenger experience is far superior to any other airliner...except for some of the cattle class only planes that fly to some nearby mostly African destinations but they seem to be slowly disappearing now.

I´m no expert by any means, but if there is a suitable solution like the A350, why isn´t Emirates using that plane instead of the 777X or 789?

I wonder how Russia is coping , taking care of all the 500 plus aircraft's it had confiscated , after the sanctions became in effect in 2022 .
Are they still maintaining these complicated aircraft's as required by the FAA?

Not very well from reports. The FAA only has authority over aircraft flying into the US. They don't really have anything to do with Russia at this point for obvious reasons

@@johniii8147 that's my point, if they are not be required to follow the strict rules set by the FAA, how can you make sure that the planes flying in Russia now are safe to fly.
I would be afraid to set foot in a Russian plane right now.
The very laks way they maintain their equipment, it is doubtful if it is up to standards !

Part of the story of the A380 return is slightly more mundane than you might think. There is a global shortage of airport and airline workers. combine that with airports with limited numbers of take off and landing slots per day, and it's the only way an A380 even makes marginal sense. Otherwise, it's not particularly good passenger mile costs, and having nearly 600 seats out of service every time a sensor plays havoc is a serious issue.
The A380 also has a hidden cost that most airlines won't talk about, which is they are extremely poor in taking belly cargo. Given 500 to 600 pax on each flight, most of the belly space is taken up with their baggage and whatnot. Compare that to a 777, which flies 350 to 450 depending on configuration, and still has place for a fair bit of cargo as well. The A380 is a big enough issue that Emirates flies separate 777 cargo planes to the same destination, which they may not have to do if they flew three or four 777s on the same route.
So overall, the A380 is not efficient, but they have cast their die and they have to use them.
