I respect Jeff Ross as a comedian a lot. He’s been into doing sets like this his entire career, for charities and to spread awareness and a message he feels compelled to speak. As he’s become Roastmaster he’s done it even more rather than chasing more money and expanding his career. He seems perfectly happy doing stand up and only stand up until he dies. That’s a real pro; in any occupation.

Saw people killed in front of my eyes and been shot at more times than I wanna remember. Too bad I’m only kinda funny. College education or military service is now expected. Sure it’s easy to be a cop in a small town in Alabama but LAPD only accepts 1/1000 applicants
Not really. I've been cool with like 95% of cops, and I'm black.
None of this speaks to what's busted about the system, but it is cool to hear that one of the most notoriously racist towns in the north has gone a quarter century without shooting an unarmed person.

@@carrotcake6572 you're right, becoming a cop is hard for major cities. Myself and a guy I was stationed with in the Marines both failed the psych portion, he went for Chicago PD and I was disqualified from NYPD.
@Rick Nash Calling someone who works a job to protect people in their city scum is like stabbing yourself in the back and honestly is no better than the racism that people accuse these cops of because turns out, most cops are normal people and most people are not racist. I worked in law enforcement. The constant, daily verbal abuse was more difficult for me than the job itself. It just wears on you after years. I admire people who can retain their optimism and positive disposition thru that.
When I was in Boston and needed help with directions the city and state police were very nice

Can’t like cops if all you have is bad experiences. One threatened to take my 12 year old sister to jail because she wouldn’t stop crying she he tried to talk to her. She was crying because her sister had just gone to the hospital.
There’s 3 cops in Minneapolis that may have been good cops, but not one of them lived up to that title by not stopping the senseless killing of George Floyd by a cop that everyone in the department knew was bad

Yeah Boston! I grew up in a suburb of Boston and was moved to the Midwest by my former husband. I am 71 and wish that I had the energy to move back because I miss the ocean and the people. When I lived in Boston 100 years ago the Boston cops were great to me. Apparently they are still pretty great!

I'm a Democrat, I obviously lean left, and I'm Latino; supporting the police doesn't have to be about race. You cannot lump any one demographic into one description or assumption: blacks, whites, lations, muslims, and yes, cops. It's all equally ignorant, and in reality, it's a case by case basis. Saying all cops are bad just causes resentment among the (many) good ones, and we may lose them too.
I agree with everything you said but the good ones need to be the driving force in weeding out the bad ones. Police culture seems to lean towards silence or lies to protect the bad ones which doesn't make them much better if they're doing so.

Of course not...and it's interesting though about the police department itself... no unarmed shooting deaths in 20 years...clearly diverse with both ethnicities and being openly gay...

Or how cops profiling black and brown people isn't remotely the same as those same people painting cops with a broad brush.
1. Cops murder, assault, and harass people in their homes minding their own business. Anecdote, but I was personally harassed when our silent alarm went off accidentally. I was washing my dad's truck in front of the house and they rolled up and treated me like a criminal. Like a burglar would stop robbing for a second because he thought the homeowner's truck could use a wax. It took a while for my Dad (who was not even dressed to go outside) to convince them the house was ours and we weren't a father-son robbing team. The whole time they had me on the curb, ankles crossed and everything in front of my house with all my neighbors watching. Nowhere is safe.
2. When they do this, they rarely face consequences so even if you report it, chances of justice are slim. Do I even need to mention the prejudice against black and brown people in the "criminal" "justice" system
3. Cops should be held to a higher standard - if one side can force you to comply with their whimsical directions and can shoot you if you don't comply fast enough, they need to be much more responsible and level-headed than the average person. Cops should be better at conflict deescalation than they are at power(trip) projection. Send the hotheads to the military where they'll get their dicks slapped back in line.
4. When a cop does something fucked up, it's *because* he was wearing a badge. He was doing it as an official representative of LAPD (or whatever) and of the government. Being wary of a badge is not the same as being wary of a color of skin.
5. If you can't take the heat, get the fuck out the kitchen. Being a cop is a tough job but they signed up for it. If you get scared every time someone reaches in their pocket, you should quit. They can quit anytime. You can't quit being black. You can't hide it.
And I know it was a joke but Jeff's analogy was bad. If I had a bad chimichanga, I wouldn't hate Mexicans, I would just avoid that restaurant. Just like I don't hate white people or all government employees, I just avoid cops when I can.
I love Jeff Ross, he's my favorite part of every roast, but he has no frame of reference for what he's talking about.
