Oh yea, I’m sure it’s so easy to be laughed at and humiliated on TV and literally be mocked and laughed out of the room. Easy for you to say behind your keyboard. Anyone with any sense and the tiniest shred of decency and/or empathy would understand that it’s not easy to be the butt of the joke in a packed room, and especially on TV that’s going to be viewed by 100s of thousands.

Jamie straight bullied the guy. It was funny and it got laughs but that's what it was. A bully picking on a little guy. A young new comedian in his first big moment around sports legends and comedy stars of the time getting a little overwhelmed by the moment and basically Jamie Foxx with a HOT MIC essentially made fun of him for his entire set. A joke or two from Jamie would have been fine and maybe allowed Doug to springboard back but that's not what happened at all. Young comedians bomb a set. It happens. They usually don't have other established, great comedians on stage with them making fun of them as they bomb.
Jeff mis-remembered it a little bit. Doug did not go after Jamie first on stage. But his jokes were not hitting so Jamie went in on him. The back story was that Doug had been talking about how he was funner than Jamie, so that is the real reason why Jamie went after him.

Jamie annihilated him, and went after him for his lack of comedic talent on his big break night when he's trying to make it. Doug started off slow but deserved his chance to try and recover. I just ran across the roast while watching other roasts, so I had to check out some interviews to find out more about how people reacted to this incident. Foxx was also singing "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" while Dick Gregory was talking. He was definitely being an a-hole. Yeah, a roast is an occasion that sanctions being one, but everybody gets their turn. Foxx seemed a little intoxicated, at least with himself. He "destroyed" Doug Williams, but to me, he was the one who looked bad, like a bully because he had all the power. It might have been funny if Williams had had a chance to get his feet and proven that he was tripping by even thinking of himself as a comedian, but I think the jury was still out. I just felt bad for Williams and wondered what his set would have been if he'd been allowed to get it out. You wanna keep the show moving and looking like a show? You let the rookie have his five minutes or whatever and you move on. If he's still talking and not killing after his time, you put your arm around him and say "Doug Williams, ladies and gentlemen". Let him live to fight another day for his career. I'm not a comedian or big time, but I'm a songwriter and a wedding DJ (now that's small time) and I know how a show in front of people works. This incident is over 20 years ago and of course, doesn't matter now, but that's my reaction to the moment.
idk tho he wasn't setting well I remember his set and even with Jamie playing Apollo's hookman the entire segment felt weird and overly long Williams was not reading the room and stepping down and he absolutely needed too. He bombed badly- Jamie's the roast host and that show has to go on and not turn into a quiet session. I just watched the roast in question last night (Shaq's All-Star Roast #2, of Emmet Smith) and it was the single WORST comedy roast I've never seen in my life (and I've seen dozens!) So disorganized, poorly produced, badly directed, the "cross-talk" by others with live mics was as distracting as it was disrespectful, including Jamie Foxx's bizzare awkward interruptions.

I just watched the roast in question last night (Shaq's All-Star Roast #2, of Emmet Smith) and it was the single WORST comedy roast I've never seen in my life (and I've seen dozens!) So disorganized, poorly produced, badly directed, the "cross-talk" by others with live mics was as distracting as it was disrespectful, including Jamie Foxx's bizzare awkward interruptions.
