Anyone with any sense and the tiniest shred of decency and/or empathy would understand that it’s not easy to be the butt of the joke in a packed room, and especially on TV that’s going to be viewed by 100s of thousands.

Jamie straight bullied the guy. It was funny and it got laughs but that's what it was. A bully picking on a little guy. A young new comedian in his first big moment around sports legends and comedy stars of the time getting a little overwhelmed by the moment and basically Jamie Foxx with a HOT MIC essentially made fun of him for his entire set. A joke or two from Jamie would have been fine and maybe allowed Doug to springboard back but that's not what happened at all. Young comedians bomb a set. It happens. They usually don't have other established, great comedians on stage with them making fun of them as they bomb.

I appreciate Jeff's opinion but he's obviously trying to cover for Jamie here. Watch the tape. Doug didn't go after Jamie at all. This isn't "what you do at roasts". Jamie annihilated him, and went after him for his lack of comedic talent on his big break night when he's trying to make it. Doug started off slow but deserved his chance to try and recover. It was messed up.
And yes, it was funny. I don't deny Jamie's incredible talent for a second. But Jeff is doing this because he knows it's been a small stain on Jamie's career. I just ran across the roast while watching other roasts, so I had to check out some interviews to find out more about how people reacted to this incident. Foxx was also singing "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" while Dick Gregory was talking. He was definitely being an a-hole. Yeah, a roast is an occasion that sanctions being one, but everybody gets their turn. Foxx seemed a little intoxicated, at least with himself. He "destroyed" Doug Williams, but to me, he was the one who looked bad, like a bully because he had all the power. It might have been funny if Williams had had a chance to get his feet and proven that he was tripping by even thinking of himself as a comedian, but I think the jury was still out. I just felt bad for Williams and wondered what his set would have been if he'd been allowed to get it out. You wanna keep the show moving and looking like a show? You let the rookie have his five minutes or whatever and you move on. If he's still talking and not killing after his time, you put your arm around him and say "Doug Williams, ladies and gentlemen". Let him live to fight another day for his career. I'm not a comedian or big time, but I'm a songwriter and a wedding DJ (now that's small time) and I know how a show in front of people works. This incident is over 20 years ago and of course, doesn't matter now, but that's my reaction to the moment.

I just watched the roast in question last night (Shaq's All-Star Roast #2, of Emmet Smith) and it was the single WORST comedy roast I've never seen in my life (and I've seen dozens!) So disorganized, poorly produced, badly directed, the "cross-talk" by others with live mics was as distracting as it was disrespectful, including Jamie Foxx's bizzare awkward interruptions.

Doug was not that kind of comic and yall knew it. What Jamie did was wrong. Over the top and destroyed a guys career.

Bro he kept interrupting him and cutting him off. That’s not being soft lol lol even back then people would let each other finish a sentence and get a point off.

jeffs memory is complete sh8t....thats not st all how it went down...Jamie went afyer that poor dude from the jump and it was just gross awkward bullying ....sure it was funny but why do it if it's going to fuck with someone so bad....roasts are supposed to be taking down the powerful a notch, not the powerful preying on the weak with childish jokes

Doug shouldn't have gone after Jamie Foxx and his money? The fuck? Jeff Ross is being so disingenuous here, he's shifting the goalposts regarding what is and isn't acceptable at a roast. He's literally doing a post-hoc rationalization in an attempt to discredit Doug. And he's also blatantly lying by saying that Doug was bombing on stage. How is he even defining 'bombing'?
