He was gonna be a FA that summer & told Denver he wasnt gonna resign which gives them an opportunity to move him & get something back, happens all the time in the NBA, still happens now. He didn't create anything. Kiki, Issel, Skywalker, Beck...English, Lever, Dunn...Mutombo, LaPhonso....those guys built the Nuggets and he just added to them. @jarrensleezluis3878 Disagree. English scored more points than any other player in the NBA during the 1980s. All of those other guys could actually play defense. They also added more to their stat line than just points, they actually got things like assists, rebounds, steals, and blocks.
@BallLife100 Maybe on a standalone basis, but that isn't what gets your number retired. As a starter, English was 4-6 in playoff series...Melo was 1-7. Be great AND lead your team to some success and get your number up there...or remain just a great player who played the game.
Jokic is such a good guy, if you ask him to take another number now, he would take it. The number 15 in European basketball is usually taken by centers, that's why he took that number..

I grew up on basketball from 2003-2014, the year I graduated high school and I remember Melo as a Knick at this point. Forced his way out of Denver and never made too much noise in the playoffs. If I remember correctly it was only two years where I really thought Denver even had a chance.

I don’t understand why everyone now sounds as if Melo is an all time player or something. Perennial all star, most definitely. Talented, sure. And I liked the cat too but let’s be real, he never lead a team to the finals. Sniffed the conference finals once and got swept. Never an MVP, I might be wrong but I don’t know that he ever even lead the league in scoring. His effort on defense was always questionable too. This is so true, Melo was scorer and that's it, couldn't carry a team or make it better and lets not even talk about that shit he pulled on Jeremy Lin.. that was some foul shit!
The way I see it, if the organizations don’t plan on retiring a player’s jersey, they’re giving that number away upon request. Giannis wears 34 in Milwaukee, so did Ray Allen. Nuggets fan since the early 90s. Melo brought basketball back to Denver and was greatness for the years he was here. Was never a fan of Karl and felt he controlled the script of Melo's portrayal. Without Melo, no winning seasons, no run for the Finals, no CFs w/ Lakers. He was the reason Nuggets had a team in the early '00. Carmelo is delusional as hell. Never came into the season in shape, never played defense, never won anything and then asked for a trade. How's this not make sense to him?
Life long Nuggets fan. Truth is Jokic wasn’t the first player the Nuggets gave #15 to. Anthony Randolph was the first to get the number post-Melo. So yes, the organization was salty over Melo leaving and many of my fellow Nuggets fans co-signed it. I hold the Melo torch educating younger folks of Melo’s impact in Denver. Just go check out what kind of product they were putting on the court the few years pre-Melo. We became relevant because of Melo.

Regardless if melo put denver on the map. He also left. He coulda did what lebron did and left after the contract but instead signed a contract extension to tell us hes gone. Yes hes the first 15. But the best 15 is here.
To the fans it felt like Melo chose his loyalty. He was calling New York home. (Even though it is) when he had his chances to retire he never mentioned wanting to end it in Denver. He just never mentioned Denver after he left unless it was about George Karl and some negative shit. Being LeBrons friend was good enough for his legacy he didn’t need Denver.
Good for the Nuggets for not honoring the number of a player with no honor. Now Jokic is turning it around and people will forgot about what's his name
Sorry as a nugs fan who've been watching since the melo era. He didn't do enough for us to warrant a jersey retirement. Jokic is offering to go to play from the bench after hearing nurk want out of denver Thats the type of dude we talking about, so if there's any type of pushback on the jersey number he definitely will respect that
And Melo brought them out of obscurity, literally. 8 losing seasons in a row, Melo gets to Denver and BOOM! 7 consecutive trips to the playoffs and back to relevancy they go. It's not obvious his jersey should be retired in Denver. Melo was a no. 1 draft pick. With all of the potential Melo had, he decided he would rather look great as an individual than help a team win. End of story. PERIOD. Giving the no. 15 to a 41st round pick wasn't slighting Melo because no one thought Jokic would become the player he is. You got to be delusional to think there was some master plan in giving a 2nd rounder a number, especially when someone at the same position also just got drafted ahead of him. I've been a diehard Nuggets fan since Melo's first year. Not once since leaving have I ever heard him give praises for his time here or to the fans. Everytime, he just talks about what if he got drafted to Detroit and could've been a champion right away. Nuggets put good teams around him, unfortunately the West was unbelievably loaded. If you have 50wins, you'd barely make 8th seed and right away have to face the Spurs or Lakers. If Denver was in the Eastern conference, those same Nuggets would have at least made a Finals appearance during that time. Post Nuggets career, the only accomplishment was one good year with the Knicks, but that same year Nuggets were still better and even broke the franchise record for wins(and only had 3 home loses). Nuggets fans and the organization would have no problem welcoming Melo back and celebrating his time here, but he first needs to stop being petty and actually give props to the city who did everything for him. It's no coincidence that he announced his retirement right when Nuggets clinched their Finals spot. He had a chance to be the unquestioned all time face of a franchise, but he took it for granted, now someone else seized that role and even did it in his former number(which Jokic wore in Serbia btw)
Just retire jersey number 15 for team USA. This is how athletes go broke. Melo is now hanging out with people who just want to massage his ego then later take his money...
Melo is easily one of the most overhyped players in NBA history. The man thinks he's like a LeBron, Kobe, MJ type player when he's so far from it. He had practically no playoff success, he was an average defender in his best years and a poor defender for the rest of his career. He wasn't a good passer. He was a high volume scorer. The reason people like players like him is offense is fun to watch and pure scorers when they catch fire have some of the most memorable performances. Casual fans don't really care if a guy is a poor defender or doesn't pass the ball or have playoff success, they care if a guy can go out and drop 40+. They forget the nights where he dropped like 19 on 6-23 shooting, had 1 assist, 6 turnovers and played trash defense. His NBA resume isn't even HOF worthy, it's his Olympics and NCAA Championship that going to get him in there. Man did nothing but put up empty 25 point nights in the NBA and thinks he's worthy of having the Nuggets retire his jersey. Jokic has FAR and away surpassed Melo and is the real deserving #15 jersey retirement.

He's an amazing talent, honest and humble human, and I'm glad his name will be on our rafters years after he's gone.
Just like Melo should have done when he was in the NBA. Get over yourself.
Retire your jersey for crying your way out of Denver?! Naaa bro
6:20 "Unless he was a fan" Melo has not reached world popularity where a hooper from Serbia wanted to wear #15 LOL. This convo is funny.
People were wearing jerseys of Reggie, Jordan, Kobe, Tmac, Carter, Duncan, Shaq,.. maybe one or two guys were into Melo as a player, but that's it xD
I can wait till melo speaks on why he hated on JLin in the linsanity era
Mero impersonation was underrated 😂😂😂
The Nuggets never even knew Jokic was going to be a star. They gave 15 to a second rounder. They stopped caring about you.
I live and am from Denver and loved Melo during his days here, but this ninja is delusional 😂
No one ever thinks about Carmelo Anthony PERIOD!!!
Lmao bro Jokic was picked 41st. They’re gonna erase Carmelo’s history by giving #15 to their 41st pick😂😂 ok bro
Forgot Anthony rudolph did you? Jokic wore 15 in Europe
This is the problem with Carmelo = he LOVES the sound of his own voice so much, he never questions whether it's wrong or not = DEN forgot about Melo the SECOND he left them in a bad state = they didn't give away his number, they gave a VALUABLE ROOKIE an AVAILABLE number, they didn't value OR care about = once Jokic won that CHAMPIONSHIP........the Carmelo Anthony-era ENDED INSTANTLY #NoDebate Carmelo needs to join the rest of us in the real world, where WINNING mattes more than taking ALL the MONEY you didn't deserve OR earn
Jokic came, bring in leadership, offence, defence, wins and championship
Melo came, bring in ball hogging, 0 defence, losses.
Melo playoff record in Denver is 16-29.
Melo should be blessed Denver fans never split on jerseys with his name on, still wana get retired. What a joke.
Wtf, Jokic had number 15 back in Serbia too.
I even forgot Melo fucking wore no 15 XD
Carmelo left the nuggets in very bad terms, he did them dirty.
Jokic #15 is actually legendary
Just retire jersey number 15 for team USA. This is how athletes go broke. Melo is now hanging out with people who just want to massage his ego then later take his money...
Joker got Denver the first championship banner!
Melo is so into himself lol first of all Jokic has always been #15 since a kid. when he got drafted no one expected him to become what he is right now so basically he probably asked if the #15 was available and of course it was cause that # was never retired but that was, is & will be his # until he retires. 3x MVP, NBA Champion!!! 🔥🔥🔥 Go Nuggz!!!
I'm not gonna lie. I was the biggest Melo fan. He got paid and nuggets owe him nothing. He was out of shape during those great teams. God bless Melo I hope he looks in the mirror and figures out what really happened during his career
Let's go baby jokic the real mvp
"Jokic has worn 15 since he was a kid. He was the biggest kid on the team and 15 was the biggest jersey. He's worn it ever since even in his European league." Paraphrasing the Athletic. Sooo.... basically Melo is letting his emotions get the best of him instead of understanding the facts. He's starting to sound like Scottie Pippen.
Carmelo thinks it’s all about him. It’s like, bro, no one was even thinking of you. Was there an uproar from fans about Jokic getting #15? No. And Carmelo himself only cares because he knows Jokic is greater than him, he wouldn’t have cared if Jokic ended up like most 41st picks.
They give him 15 but nobody thought Joker was going to become who he is. 2nd round pick with upside. It's not a conspiracy against Melo.
Denver Melo walked so Jokic could run. They need to put some respect on Melo.
Drama in Denver, Drama in NY, Drama in retirement.
@@Joesmith-gn7mh Ha, Stephen A Smith and Shannon Sharpe all seem to think he's drama.
@@Joesmith-gn7mh I actually agree, I don't think much of SAS. But 12 million people think he's an authority, so I threw him in. Just saying bro, Melo is a great player, but he's drama....like Mariah Carey.
Jokic was the 2nd round 41 pick. I don’t think they expected him to be this good. I have seen so many 2nd round picks and 1st round picks come and go and disappear out of the NBA from the nuggets. Nonetheless they should not have let him rock that number, and I’m the biggest Melo fan!
Cringe!
Annnddd Melo was a top 3 pick...and didn't get them anywhere meaningful all while stat padding😂 COPE
@@heywella he did get us to a wcf and lost to kobe and the lakers
@@jaredguy9234 forgot about that. Good look 💯 Not a Nuggets fan but happy you guys finally got one.
I understand Melo point but Jokic is wearing 15 with pride and honor.
very few players are great enough to be associated with a number. melo is certainly not one
Absolutely right.
It's like penny and tmac in Orlando had number 1
They just put Jimmy Johnson in the Cowboys ring of honor and he coached the Cowboys to 2 Super Bowls. Melo you took your team to 1 Conference Finals. Why the hell would the Nuggets even retire your number. Be happy with a Bobblehead day if that.
Jokic played number 15 before came to nba, because that Jersey was only his size that team have it at that time.Others was smaller one
The older generation is going to be like remember the guy that wore number 15 on the Nuggets? Which one? The one that didn’t win a chip.
If he wanted them to be worried about his number he would've stayed
Bruh they literally gave 15 to Anthony Randolph before Joker. They gave it to a dude who got drafted during a Taco Bell commercial. They did not give a damn about trying to erase anything. Melo just has main character syndrome. Gtfo.
He’s cappin on the Nuggets jerseys before powder blue. Their 80’s jerseys were 🥶. 90’s jerseys were bland at the time but the Mutumbo and Abdul-Rauf throwbacks are nice as well!
He accomplished 2 things you never could.
MVP and a Chip
Joker surpassed you as a player already.
He’s bugging they gave it to a second round pick that who knew was gonna ball out…. Jokic wore 15 in Serbia and let’s be real Melo requested a trade and left like bye bro your number ain’t retired
With this mentality, it’s not difficult to see why a ring never materialized for Melo.
you overthinking big bro 😂
Facts bro I’m from denver EVERYONE HERE LOVES MELO
Katt Williams:
"Being confident and not delusional is a real skill"
There is no comparison to Jokic and Melo, I'm a native of Colorado and way Melo was wasnt the hero to the city at no point
I lived in Denver during his entire career. Melo showed absolutely no interest in being a Denver Nugget. He wasn't friendly with the local media and really only participated in team sponsored charity events. He left the city as soon as the season was over and was pushing to get out and play for another franchise ASAP. He didn't try at all to be our greatest player in franchise. He wanted to be in NY. He is delusional. No one in Denver believes anything he says.
If Melo didnt act like a diva and stat chased in Denver, the franchise could have been more respectful to him. People forget he whined in NY when Jeremy Lin had a break out month.
You knoiw Melo is still a diva when Jokic already brought a championship to Denver and still bitter about a jersey number where he should be happy for the city
