who'da thought this old rat man would break my four-year streak of not making animatics. I swear it's lin's fault. anyway I had a TIME with encanto, went and saw it twice in theaters, and wdtab was by far my favorite song in the movie-though I did feel there was more to be desired with bruno's character in the end, like homie deserved his own pseudo-villain song, so voila. here's my take. it's been four years and I still only use iMovie, forgive the amateur editing.

Apparently, before he developed the ritual we see in the movie, the visions would hit him like seizures at random and his mother would still tell him to spend his days read people's prophecies.
I can't help but want good things for him.

I push a lot for an Encanto show, and this is another reason why. I could totally see Bruno with Julieta, Pepe, Alma, and Felix. Bruno just turns his back, the emotion building, and starts singing this. The family realizes just what they've done to Bruno, and how he's had it, not just for his time in the walls, but his whole life.

I don't know about an Encanto show.. I have a feeling it'll end up being childish with a random, uninteresting plot for each episode.

I can easily imagine a mini series, with each episode focusing on a different character.
I feel like the characters are the strongest asset of Encanto, and yet they’re not that well explored (some not at all), so while a normal plot with a villain and such would be hard to contextualise, I feel like learning more about the family members would be just as good, is properly done
Mkay, I could absolutely see how that would comfortably fit within the narrative. He's a very sympathetic character who's been through a lot of disservice and pain because of his family and community. this very readily depicts how he felt during it all and KNOWING he's been around, listening in and watching the world go by without him as he slowly turns into a pariah within his own home and town, that's reeeally gotta hurt. PLUS, Mirabel's hug at the end, just like with her sisters and eventually Alma, that is a PERFECT tie in to the whole narrative. WELL made. I really enjoyed this :D

Heck, even when he’s singing you could quickly flash to him, his point of view seeing Delores telling Mirabel about Bruno. It can open up his character by showing him having to be sneaky around Casita all the while showing his love for his nieces from afar.
Oh yeah. Probably right after Mirabel asks him why he left, but didn’t leave.
I kinda want his own kids seeing after the whole proposal dinner goes to heck. And three sing this some from the oldest starting and the final chorus all three joining together in harmony.

This has made me wonder since I first saw it… it doesn’t sit right with me, I mean Dolores can hear him and yet she says nothing, to anyone at all. Even worse, she lets Bruno live like that for years, all alone, hurt, scared and loosing his mind slowly a little more everyday, and didn’t even so much as talk to him or visit him, or show any kind of care or concern for him, because it was easier for her.
As someone who has dealt with the ramifications of a person who sees, hears or knows something bad is happening and decides to do nothing, allowing the harm to continue for years longer than it ever should have I just have trouble wrapping my brain around how someone who is portrayed as being compassionate and willing to sacrifice her own desires for her families future could have sat on this information for so long.
The answer is that a truly compassionate individual wouldn’t have. Only someone pretending to be compassionate would, because no one else knows so there’s nothing to prove if it’s fake. The fact that she knew what was going on and did nothing herself only to bring it up so someone ELSE can do what she should have done just diminishes her character for me. I adored her at first, until I found out she knew where Bruno was the whole time, and Bruno said no one ever talked to him, or looked for him or anything. She could have been someone important but she chose to hand her opportunity to Maribel, at not just her expense, but Bruno’s too. I’m not saying she’s a bad character, but she is the epitome of “turning a blind eye” though in her case it would be a deaf ear, I suppose.

I don't think she knew all this time that Bruno didn't leave and "turned a blind eye to it." she is not such a cruel person, and in the cartoon itself it was shown that she ABSOLUTELY does not know how to keep secrets. She wouldn't have kept quiet about it for so many years
I think it has something to do with Casita, she helped him. Since Casita and their gifts are one and the same magic, it could well make him quite inconspicuous. Yes, in the end, she says she always knew it, but it was more of an assumption, a guess, just strange sounds were heard, she hardly knew it for sure. And the words at the end are nothing more than an insertion, like "and I always knew it."
I straight up had to pause the movie when they showed the plate bruno made so he could "eat" with the family so i could sob w/o missing lore so this ver is super cool to hear (well not cool as in his trauma is cool but cool to hear his perspective of this song)
i KNOW! Youre the first person i saw talk about it, that little detail made me so, so sad, i wanted to cry. The way he had to tell mirabel that his gift wasnt helping, in a way that only showed a bit of the sadness he must have felt the 10 years he was hiding away, that mustve really hurt, and it definitely does something to you when you think about it
Yesss :¨( that scene literally broke me. I cry at that every time I watch the movie, because it's like, he wants to be part of the family, but the family doesn't want him (I know that's not exactly what happened but still) ... I guess now that I think about it, it just really reminds me of me and my family. The whole movie is so relatable to so many people but in the bad, family trauma way, it's heartbreaking ...

@@dee4bee i know. It made you feel his sadness, and it was literally terrible. I know you know what i mean, because you're the one who's comment i replied to, but the way he sort of exhibits that sadness while watching mirabel observe his drawn-on plate was just heartbreaking! It makes me tear up just thiking about it. He had to hide away for 10 years because as you said, his own family considered him to make bad things happen, and he was just so done with everything that he left, yet still longed to be part of the family...

That part made me so sad. He loved the family even though they scapegoated him since he got his powers. I think the ONLY Madrigal who loved him unconditionally was Julieta. She was the only one who said kind words about him (when she told Mirabel that "Bruno lost his way in this family") sounded like she was deeply saddened that he left and that Mirabel probably reminded Julieta of how Bruno would confide in her and it worried her that Mirabel would run out on the family too. The fact that Bruno's room is nearest to Julieta's kitchen probably is no coincidence since he'd be nearest to the only family member who didn't think he was a bad person at all.
I love how Mirabel and Bruno have very different yet similar problems. Neither are respected by the family, both are considered outcasts but for totally opposite reasons. Mirabel doesn't have a gift like everyone else, she's different and makes the family question the magic. Where as Bruno does have a gift but it's seen as a problem rather then helpful like his sisters and his nieces and nephews.

I honestly feel so bad for bruno. It must be really painful to hear your own family bad mouthing you. I know he's just a Disney character, but It still hurts.

It's hard to say he's "Just a Disney character" when this is a movie that so many people relate to in many different ways. And the fact that you feel sympathy for him means that his story is well written and realistic.

@cherry berry it’s not enough. Especially considering their own issues brought on by their gifts weren’t even *touched* upon - Camilo’s identity crisis and Dolores struggling to cope with hearing EVERYTHING.
I saw a theory that there are four main characters who suffered from pressure: Mirabrl, Bruno, Isabela and Luisa. They change throughout the story and they have their songs
I can't express enough how amazed I am. The drawings are so good and clean that match with the sad vibe of the song.

I like this, but the fact that you rhymed "back" with itself is driving me insane lol
This song makes me realize that all the Madrigal family gifts are also a curse in disguise.
We know that their gifts are based on things they like, their personality, and other factors. But they also can cause pain for them in a lot of ways. However, Bruno is just another level. We see from the movie, the photo from his gift ceremony is that Bruno always was the anxious kid, one who is very superstitious and who usually worries and assumes the worst, even from the small and insignificant things. Maybe Casita thought that gave him the ability to see the future as a way to say: "Hey, stop worrying too much, see the future and see that things are going to be okay!" In the hopes that this would calm him down for a while.
However, that didn't work; The town of Encanto quickly grew to hate him and blame him and everything that he saw in his visions. (The death of the girl's fish and the hurricane at his Pepa's wedding, for example.) So it's no surprise that when they heard that he disappeared, the town quickly adopted the phrase "We don't talk about Bruno." Thinking that if you said his name, he would appear and give you a vision, sealing your future. Despite that, he can only see it and not change anything.
Bruno became the superstition itself.
I read somewhere that the triplets got gifts at least partly based on what Abuela needed at the time (Rain to grow crops, a healer to help the injured, a seer to predict disasters that might endanger the village) and when it got to the grandkids the gifts were a little more flashy (like Camilo's shapeshifting)
Do you know what makes this even sadder? Bruno was 5 YEARS OLD when he got this gift. Can you imagine being so young and being a witness to things that he probably feels powerless to stop?
Also Bruno is about 50 years old by the time of "Encanto".
He has had to deal with this shit for 45 FUCKING YEARS!
Not to mention he hid for a few of them
and even without taking the simple fact that he doesn't even feel angry with the family, he very well could have used Mirabel for him to destroy the miracle candle but he simply helps her and still asks: " when you save the miracle... do you promise to visit me?" THAT HURT (ps: I'm Brazilian I don't know what it's like in the official dub)

HARBINGER!!! Imma nerd out about the usage of this wonderfully accurate word. Now most of the time a harbinger is accused of causing destruction and bringing bad luck, but the actual definition of the word is as follows “a person or thing that announces or signals the approach of another.” Not necessarily good or bad and definitely isn’t a cause but a warning. Now Bruno is consistently blamed for the things he foretells, but one it isn’t all bad, Isabela, and two he doesn’t cause it he sees prophecies. So both the misconception behind the word and the true meaning make perfect sense in context. I’m genuinely surprised that the word was never utilized in the movie. Great job I love this reprise!!!

I’m so obsessed with this, it fits so well that now when i rewatch encanto (for the millionth time) it genuinely feels like something is missing. i especially love “i know they’ll pin the blame on me” cause all i can imagine is the anger and pain he must feel, after all those years of being seen as a curse when he was just doing what they asked (looking into their future). i really hope they do a sequel or a tv show or something and we get to see something like this where bruno finally lets out his pain.
I know I already left a comment, but I was listening to this again and I realized the originality of 0:26 to the end. First off, 0:26-0:46 has a perfect cling to the style of the original that blends amazingly with the music box thing you have going, and reminds me of a stylish mix of Dolores' and Camilo's styles in their parts of the song (which has quite some symbolism to me, but that's a different talk). And then, from 0:47 to the end, we again revert to leaning more towards our music box while carrying that pleasing rhythm displacement that really just completes everything. And did I mention the sound effects? Those were outstanding

Hhhhh I'm crying how could this do this to me? That writing was phenomenal and the imagery was outstanding. A lot of original fansongs I hear do have good writing as to the chords and note processions and such, yet you took the movie's song and reworked it in a heart-wrenching music box-esque style that perfectly compliments your voice and the extraordinarily flowing lyrics. Well done!
This would have been a great reprise, especially since it was already heavily implied in the movie that he heard everything everyone was saying about him through the crack on the dining room wall.
There's several reasons I really like this.
The expressions match perfectly with what he's saying, what the point of it is, and how he's feeling. And, you have a moderately realistic style, (not an insult, I love your style) and it will noticeable switch, sometimes cartoonier than other times, and I think it's really cool. And, your voice, on top of that. Your tone, your notes, it's all perfect.
Imagine if John Leguizamo sung this.

Literally my only complaint about the movie is Bruno didn't get enough time to shine by himself, him singing this song to his family causing them to understand what he went through and welcome him back would've been the perfect ending to his arc

I must say that I was deeply annoyed by the end of the film. I mean... He spent TEN YEARS hiding from his own family, living like a nobody, completely ignored by the people he loved, being treated like a villain, totally unappreciated and hated when he was just trying to HELP everyone and protect his relatives. He ate with the mice, literally, while everyone else happily posed a wall away. To reach the end, give a hug and it's over? A little hug and all the pain is dispelled? I REALLY needed a song of him reuniting with his family and expressing all his heartache. Something really dramatic. This, for me, is already an excellent glimpse of what an ideal ending would be.

This puts a whole different perspective as Bruno as a character.
The Bruno we see in the film is energetic and outgoing, though tends to keep to himself because he is the black sheep.
This Bruno is tired of the way he's treated. He loves his family, but he wishes he could just be treated the same as his sisters.

I love this version of "We Don't Talk About Bruno" from Bruno's sad point of view that tells a little of his backstory as to why his family edited him out of their lives. I think in my opinion Disney missed out on the chance for Mirabel to not only meet Bruno, and find how sad his life is, but for Bruno to break into song as "We Don't Talk About Bruno Reprise Laureli Amadeus" Also, this was all spectacularly done. Thank you, Laureli Amadeus.

This is so cool! I think something like this would’ve been great in the actual movie and I always felt bad for Bruno being able to hear everyone try to erase him, saying not to talk about him and blaming him for just telling them bad things that would happen despite not causing them.

This should be in the movie. It seems official and it can fit chronologically when they first mean
everyone talking about how great the song is and no one's talking about the phenomenal singing
A song like this will be in the inevitable broadway/stage show. Those always have more music in them.
My boy. It really shows how hurt and alone bruno felt that his family and community outcasted viewing him as ill omen or associate. And my boy needs lots and lots of hugs especially from his niece mirabel who he left to protect from suffering the same him.

This scene and song is so good, it could have been in the movie! Mirabel shares a song with all the troubled family members and none is more troubled than Bruno. He deserves this.This scene would absolutely crush people's hearts and make em shed a tear, I can tell-after the upbeat, dancing, happy We dont talk about bruno song this reprise would shock and awe.
But it would also dramaticaly change the tone of Bruno's scenes in the movie. He is goofy, and awkvard-adorkable even in most of his scenes. This gives his scenes a light-heartedness and makes him a joy to watch. This song hits very heavy an dark tones, the movie referenced this crushing underlying sadness by the dinner plate scene only for a few seconds. But those few seconds endeared Bruno to many fans! I love Bruno!
Now I really wish they had done something like this in the movie.

I'm now considering this canon by virtue of the fact that he could've sang this part while everyone else was singing the final chorus. He heard every lyric, every word, and figured "this song's about me and damn if I don't get a part in it"
"Fingers crossed they still love me so" even gotta make the comedic moments from Encanto sad as shit in retrospect

Bruno growing from an innocent child probably happy to recieve a magic gift to a 50 year old msn traunatized by the expections of those around him is just..a lot
