Welcome to Standing Stone Kennels! In this video we show you how to make a cheap and easy training tool that can replace an electronic bird launcher if you have quality training birds. This easy and inexpensive pointing drill for your puppy works so well it can simulate a more wild bird experience for your dog or puppy when training. Not everyone can afford an expensive bird launcher, but a bit of chicken wire and some zip ties and five minutes of your time can help you have a great alternative training tool that will help teach your puppy to point birds! Follow along to see how its done!

Do you do the same drill with pigeons? If so, do you set them in the same manner?
Thanks for this. The launchers in the UK are nearer $600 than $300! That cone looks like a cool idea for getting the dogs pointing, especially if you've got the right depth of ground cover to keep the bird comfortable and the dog solely relying on scent.

Great idea guy's. I have A female GSP named Mila that has just turned 6 months. This is my second GSP after losing Lena 6 year's ago. Lena didn't come from a line of hunting dog's, but as a new pup was stalking, pointing and had great recall. The new pup Mila comes from a great background of solid hunting dog's, but is just not taking to bird's well. She is interested in them and also in other critters like lizards, I'm in FL and will stop on them then flush. But on wild bird's that are just around she gets distracted unlike Lena that would point from any distance and go into stealth mode till a woah and hold forever and look back at me for direction.Thanks for the videos working older dog's to the field. Any tips from anyone would be great and I'll keep watching.

Any advice for using this method for quail? Smaller cone?
Why will this not work with quail? I understand regarding the pigeon. But quail will act similar to a pheasant, does the cone just have to be smaller dimensions and that's it?
Would you utilize this with a pup the first time you introduce the dog to birds in the field?

Does this work well with feral pigeons that I’ve trapped too? I would imagine they would fly before you get back to them🤷♂️🤷♂️

They will... Most of the time unless you come up on it still sleeping it will most likely be gone by the time you are back with your pup!

You can dizzy or tire the bird. Ferals need to be tired or dizzied well out.

How does one train / acclimate pointer to close distance on target bird prior to flush (assuming bird is not running)?
Best thing to do here is get access to wilder birds! They teach sooo much!

Thankyou for this video, my question is if your dog flush before you are ready or flush before you give the command to flush and the bird takes off, do you still shoot the bird or you let it go?

You can use this with pups! If they bust the chicken wire just bend it back!

I would guess not very well.

Typically no they wake up and fly away most of the time.

Using orange colored ties will help to get them easily spotted in the field.

Great question. Not well... Pigeons naturally habitat is not sitting in the grass. Most of the time when the wake up they will just fly.

I'm sorry, this guy just lost all cred at "you'll probably lose them more often than not...try not to run them over later on with your hedgehog". I personally own a hedgehog and I cannot sit by and let the like of you telling us how our birds are loosed to achieve some outdoorsman's hard-on for the week.. Just kidding. Loved the content. Having fun because when I was 10 I did the same thing..train dogs every day...all day.
