    Cold showering for 6-months. Boost in will power, wakes me up, reduces electricity bill, and I don't feel hot and stuffy. 10/10 recommend. I didn't adapt to it gradually. Just went balls-to-the-wall style by using every ounce of willpower to jump right in and scold myself.

      quick question: how cold should the water be? is shivering cold alright or to much?

    • @stefanfrunza1697
      @stefanfrunza1697 7 лет назад +120

      GamerBoy69 Shivering cold is alright. The water doesn't have to be ice cold but it should be colder than room temperature. You will shiver at first, but remember that you should only be in the shower for 10-15 minutes. With time you will get used to cold water and won't shiver anymore (at least not as much). The first few times are the hardest but there's a reason why the channel's name giving this advice is called "the art of manliness" .

    I'm a bodybuilder and I started taking cold showers to recover from my workouts, but that is not why I'm writing this comment, I've always had really bad depression and I can't take anti depressants cuz the side effect are very strong for me. When I was going through my worst bout of depression I would take 45 min cold showers, they are the ONLY thing that kept me feeling ok during that time, I hate to think that I might have committed suicide without them. They also have almost completely eliminated all body acne I have lol. I even did an experiment where I showered one side of my body cold and the other side warm lol, and I was only breaking out on the one side lol. So yah my point is that anyone who thinks cold showers aren't beneficial needs to try em, I will take them everyday for the rest of my life.

    • @Section8dc
      @Section8dc 7 лет назад +5

      Crescendo lol yah for the average person about 10 mins is perfect, that's why I said during my "worst" bout of depression. It seemed like the longer I was in there, the better I felt. I still to this day, put my phone in a bag, and watch funny videos in the shower lol, cuz I used to do it during the 45 min showers to take my mind off the cold and it just kinda stuck with me. My roommate thinks I'm weird cuz I'll be randomly laughing in the shower. 45 mins was the average back then, the longest one I ever took was 1 hour and 32 mins, clocked it on my phone.

    • @MrShoty23
      @MrShoty23 7 лет назад +15

      wow great to hear that you're okay man.. im having some hard times with depression at this time and im sure gonna try it out after reading your comment. one question, did you notice getting better immediately after taking a cold shower or did it take you a while to get better?

    • @Section8dc
      @Section8dc 7 лет назад +6

      hugh mungus thx man, no one understands the true agony of depression until they experience it. I fondly call it "the darkness", ya know when I was a teen i used to make fun of people that had it(manifested when I was about 19), what a fucking fool I was. Depression is part of the reason I got into bodybuilding, fitness and it's pursuits are the only thing that keep me going, it's the raft I cling to in my sea of despair lol, fitness has saved my life lol, that is for sure true. If you are having problems consistently then I would definitely look into that as well, it is better than anything. But of course to your question, I would say at least 10 mins for it to start relieving the depression, in COLD water, not no pussy shit lol. I SERIOUSLY recommend just putting your phone in a Ziploc bag and watch your favorite RUclips channel, it will be unbearable at first lol, start with hot and switch to cold, don't just go straight in. Now I look forward to them lol, I say if you can make it a full 20 mins you will feel SO much better, sometimes I would take 3 to 4 a day when it was bad lol, but they do work. Just put on a 20 min video and start watching it and try to forget about the cold till the video ends. It will get easier with time, I take a 6 min warm and 15-20 min cold every morning and afternoon after work. The only time I notice the cold anymore is when it's the dead of winter lol, cuz that shit isn't far above freezing.

      Section8dc Thanks for writing this man. I'm working on getting out of a depression and your story inspired me to take cold showers when I'm feeling like shit.
      I know nothing about you and it's none of my business but I do wonder if you work on getting out of your depression in other ways as well. Like therapy and self reflection and shit like that?

      +JackFknTwist1 I think they mean the fact that nobody initially really wants to take a cold shower, and when you try it out for the first time it's quite a shock. It takes a good amount of discipline to stick it out until you adjust to it.

      +Pastabilities I think that cold showers could have two very different effects depending on whether the body wants to wake up or sleep. Cold showers could augment whatever the body wants to do. I am not sure of the mechanistic principles of the same but I believe it is got to do with circadian rhythm of a person.

    I stopped my life on its tracks for 2 years to try and deal with some internal issues (emotional/psychological). As I tried a bunch of stuff and read a lot of stuff, practical stuff like cold showers, waking early, taking walks/running (used to do that at the beach), journaling, eating fruit, lowering/stopping masturbation and porn consumption, reading/studying, being honest to myself, meditating after waking up/before sleeping and having a routine were among the top things that had perceptible effects.
    When I was doing all those things together, it was the time I felt the best on my whole life. It felt insanely good. I didn't manage to keep most of these up, because I was just testing them since I still had a lot of internal shit to sort out before focusing on the external.
    Now I'm ready to start making some external changes, and it's funny how most (if not all) things I tried are covered by your videos.
    A lot of great info on your channel, I wish you great success.
    Thanks!

    Basically the cold shower tricks your body into thinking it's under more danger or stress that it is. In turn it adjusts to a more dangerous situation which means making you healthier, manlier, more energetic, more able to deal with such situations.

      i know it's true. when i was a kid we lived in a house my dad was rebuilding. there were times we didn't have various things, like electricity, or hot water, or water of any kind!
      heat.
      and we lived in New Hampshire. 8 cords of fire wood to keep the house "bearable" during the winter. but whatever, i was just a kid and what did i know. to me it was all perfectly "normal."
      one of those rebuilds was to dig a new well. we had to truck in our water every few days or so using a 500 gallon tank used for collecting maple sap. (my dad was into sugar season and maple syrup, anyway...)
      every flush of the toilet, every drop of water, my dad was there like some nazi making sure we didn't waste any of it.
      i was introduced to the "navy shower."
      today this would be considered child abuse, but at the time my dad was like, you get in, turn on the water (cold), get wet, turn it off. then you stand there, shivering your ass off and soap up. once you're "clean" you turn the water back on (cold) and rinse off and once you're finished you turn the water back off again.
      it was fucking brutal! i got the ritual down in under 3 minutes. i shit you not.
      i wouldn't take another cold shower if my life depended on it ;-) lol

      Cold showers actually help me in the mornings. If I take warm showers, I tend to stay in the shower for 20-30 minutes. Cold showers expedite this process, since I don't particularly enjoy being in ice cold water for any more than 3-5 minutes.

Cold showers have been an amazing supplementation in my weight loss. I have lost over 120lb over the past year and taking cold showers have helped tremendously. Tip: I found that jumping in head first is the way to go. I was never able to make much progress starting warm then dialing down. It may have to do with activation of the mammalian diving response as the cold water hits your face. I went from only doing 30 painful second of full cold to doing a regular 5 min shower.

    Hi Art of Manliness
    I just wanted you to know that after I watched this Video about 8 Month ago I started showering cold. Every Morning! Ever since I experienced some positive changes in my life: It has becom easier for me to get up in the morning. I feel more powerfull in the first hours of the day. I feel overall more warm the whole day (which is nice in winter but not sooo nice in summer). And the very best: My skin (neurodermatis) has become significantly better.
    Thats why i really wanted to thank you very much for this video, that has inspired me to change a little thing in my life, that has now turned out to be a not so little benefit for me. Thanks!

    I started taking cold showers almost a month ago. I had never heard of the benefits until a friend mentioned it to me when I asked about ways to keep hair tame, and looking smoother with less frizz. The idea shocked me. I had never heard of it before. I researched it, and sure enough, lots of other people (and credible people) are saying the same thing.
    The very first day I took a cold shower, it was instantly noticeable that my skin was shining. It was very vibrant. My hair was very smooth and had no frizz. (I normally have very curly and frizzy hair.) That was enough for me. I hate my curls and frizzy hair. I dread stepping into ice cold water every day. But I do it because I dread the frizz in my hair a lot more. Cold showers have worked wonders for me. Even eliminated 90% of my very bad acne! With these incentives, I will make cold showers an every day part of my life. Never going back.
    P.S. Another thing that cold showers have done for me is dramatically increase my self control. If you can make yourself freeze every morning and every night in ice cold water, you can do anything. I no longer procrastinate in anything.

    • @skeltjers
      @skeltjers 9 лет назад +5

      Koskain Anglophile Cold is a relative term, therefore I'm asking what would be a useful definition of cold in this case. There has got to be some (imaginative) graph of effect vs. temperature.

    • @koskainanglophile367
      @koskainanglophile367 9 лет назад +10

      Vincent Keltjens I consider 18 - 20°C a mild summer day. Maybe it's because I am from Germany or because I live in Canada, but my room temperature is 18°C... So yeah, you should take a shower that is colder than room temperature (and I'm not talking wussy 23°C room temperature, as it is common in the U.S.). When I was a child I frequently went swimming in the Baltic sea which is usually around 15°C, which is pretty nice and easy to get used to. I consider everything above that to be warm.

      +Sevir Rosis Not mentioned in the video is that the sudden drop in temperature pushes blood pressure way up. So any susceptibility to strokes and you might not be able to climb out of that shower. Not emphasied enough is that showers should be brief. Ask any diver what happens when exposed to cold for too long.
      Yes they may be good when you are healthy and your circulatory system is sound but they wont be curing anything.

    • @PhilJonesIII
      @PhilJonesIII 8 лет назад +1

      +SillyBehavior With cardiovascular exercise that even old people can do, you build up the pressure gently. In a shower the pressure jump is considerably quicker. Its the difference between making love with your wife and a stranger you just met. I'm not talking internal body cooling here, which is why divers spend so much keeping warm but the initial shock.
      Most of us can walk in to a cold shower with no issue. Above a certain age then you need to check with you doctor. Otherwise if the cold makes you feel faint then take it steady. Hate to think of my mum dragging me senseless out of the shower.

    -Muscle recovery
    -Mood Improvement
    -Softer, smoother, better looking skin
    -Amazing, soft, shiny, bouncy hair.
    -Heightened 'mojo'
    -Simultaneosuly awakening and relaxing. Strangely.

      What humans want tends not to be a reliable guide to what they need. Cold showers tend to be more beneficial the less attractive they seem. In traditional high latitudes cultures, from the Scandinavian Artic to the Patagonian Subantarctic, there was a major decline in populations which adopted western ideas around heating and clothing.
      In Patagonia, missionaries persuaded what they mistook for their "flock" that it was sinful (and ineffectual) to follow their usual dress code (nudity) given that it was fecking cold. It turns out that wet clothing was far more problematic to survival than nudity in a windy part of the world where it ALWAYS rains. They had no way to get clothing dry because there were no modern building materials, and no access to electricity or fossil fuels, and entire populations died out as a result.
      The reason coldness is good when it's in the form of a cold shower is that it is episodic.
      Having your body heat wicked away 24/7/365 by wet clothing exposed to fast moving cold air is not episodic, and not survivable.

    I have been taking cold showers for 2 years. And I amCertain that anybody worried about being overweight can lose weight in a matter of months. Anybody worried about having acne, can have a nice and Smooth skin. Anybody worried about losing hair, it can make your hair stronger. I have not been sick with a cold for 2 years, even when around people with flu viruses, but this should be mastered with proper breathing techniques under the cold shower. For anyone who wishes to speak louder and be heard, cold showers will make you sound louder as you let a Lot of air into your lungs in your daily cold showers. One down side, is that you can get drunk easily and I think this is due to changes in your blood circulation. If you are depressed then a cold shower is what you just might need, to start a new life.

    I don't mind taking cold showers, but do you have to do it everyday? I'm on my third day doing it, but since I have a natural affinity to the cold, I feel I am starting to get immune to cold showers. It's much easier for me to stay longer in it, I'm not breathing and jumping around as much, and overall it doesn't feel as cold to me as the first time I tried it.

    First time taking the cold showers(again) is crazy. This is my 3rd cold shower. I went to nearly the coldest I could go, then I turned sides, then to my back. The whole time I was breathing as deep I could go, and could not stop. Then I was developing this pounding headache. It went from the headache to feeling faint. The experience is pretty damned interesting.
    But, like the comments might say already, it's WELL worth it. I fell well energized, and very brisk afterwards-- Feeling the FULL effect of spring weather. I'll also tell you first hand that I've experience a better libido than before, and I'm 18 years old! I'm having the erections I had when I was 12 and before all of the masturbating began. You all who don't take cold showers NEED to try this. It's liberating.
    EDIT: Now it's May 29th, 2015(A 2 1/2 month update) I LOVE taking cold showers. It was an everyday thing. Although, it had to come to a stop. I already had a low body fat percentage, and didn't think I can naturally go any lower. But, with cold showers I DEFINITELY DID. My check bones are all strong, veins all over my quads *popped* out and the vein on my biceps goes from the very start of my bicep, to goes to my forearms. My face lost even more fat. I HAD to stop. But, now I know that *COLD SHOWERS* is *_GREAT_* fro cutting.

      ***** Thanks for the update man. Just do them every now and then. Keep in mind human beings burn fat largely from exhaling, its not really the cold showers, its the metabolis powerhaul when cortisol kicks in combined with the deeper breathing to continue oxygenating cells and deal with the stress. Think of it as a workout. Its hard work vaporizing fat from the body to be exhaled, but your genes will control how much fat is lost, and your brain will regulate your behavior to re-supply those fats lost if you overdo it. Got a headache? I'd make sure your well-hydrated before you do the cold shower again.

    Best thing to do in the morning is shower with hot/warm water to exfoliate and clean of pores. Use whatever type of cleanser/body wash that you feel will help you with that.
    Then, shower with cold water to close those pores and leaves you feeling fresh and clean.

      Soap in any form (or any substitute) has two uses: getting rid of persistent, oily grime (say you're fixing up a vintage farm machine, or digging fossil fuels out of the ground), and killing certain pathogens. If you don't have either of those on your skin, do yourself a huge favour and stick to cold unadulterated water.
      Soap kills beneficial skin flora as well as the dangerous sort. The latter are rare in western contexts outside of hospitals, and in any case have trouble establishing on a person with a fully colonised complement of beneficial bacteria. However the dangerous ones are often the first to establish after that same person eradicates the entire system with soap.
      The bacteria which create body odour are similar. While not generally dangerous they are unpleasant. I could never get more than half a day out of a T shirt in summer without getting so stinky I could not bear myself, before I started a long period of careful experimentation which eventually led me to forgo hot showers. I wash with a handcloth in cold water every day and never use soap on my body. Every Sunday I have a cold shower, even in midwinter, even in the mountains.
      Soap promotes the excess production of natural oils from the sebaceous glands, and so we end up greasier than when we abstain (and the grease collects grime.) Our skin alternates wildly between too dry (immediately after a hot shower with soap) and too oily (as the body struggles to find an equilibrium that we keep disturbing)
      Now in the interest of science I occasionally wear the same T shirt for many weeks, without any perceptible buildup of body smell. The products which were sold to me as a solution for BO turned out to be causing the very thing they pretended to cure. Naturally such products are amazingly good for "the economy". Much like booze, one armed bandits and breast enhancements, they more they fail to cure the underlying causes of unhappiness, the more humans are inclined to redouble their consumption.

    I started doing this and I noticed another improvement from cold showers. Decreased environmental impact. My showers are shorter now because I don't just wait time and sit there letting the water hit me. I get in, do my thing, and I'm out with more time on my hand. So cold showers also add to my productivity.

      TopGunPaintballer it does both, it will give you an energy boost but also relax you. so if you have energy in the morning it will boost that and at night it will relax the body and after 20 minutes you will get relaxed and sleep way better.

    • @Aright231
      @Aright231 9 лет назад

      christopher b Yea, what "energy" is confuses a lot of Americans, me included in the past. But basically what you are doing with the cold shower is producing a stressing effect, what I call "discomfort training". This causes a sudden excretion of adrenaline from the kidneys in response to the stress. This is generally what is experienced in the body as "energy" but its really an evolutionary response to shock or stress. While you are alert suddenly, you are endowed with energy, which is quickly used to recover from that shock and stabilize the body, and you reach a homeostasis, perhaps even while you are still in the cold. I would guess that the longer you withstand and tolerate the cold shower, up to a point of drying out the skin, the greater the benefits. You can both face the day or turn in to sleep because you have stored energy which is needed for both endeavors.

    • @chrisland97
      @chrisland97 9 лет назад +1

      Davey R I mostly agree with you in the broad sense. The blood pumping creates numerous benefits, including shuttling toxins out, bringing nutrients in, pumping hormones to areas needed, alleviating muscle tightness from acids and other toxins.
      I usually do 5-10 mins of cold water hitting the neck-chest area, and then the shoulders and neck area in the back. Breathing deeply and pushing the levels of discomfort. You should definitely build your way up to that or longer, as it can shock the body's immune system if you are not used to it.
      I would say the main benefits come from the blood flow through the body and the testosterone and human growth hormones produced. This is just from what I remember looking up a while back and from personal experience.

    • @Aright231
      @Aright231 9 лет назад

      Isn't it crazy how we can reign in things like depression and anxiety by deliberately causing stress? Its because we can control it. Depending on your level of health, yea, it can be overwhelming hitting hard core cold water all of a sudden. I found that despite my will, I'd get signs from my body that it was time to stop when the discomfort was too much to handle. Again it kind of reminds you to know when to detach yourself from external sources of stress in real life for the very same reason. Nothing like talking about cold shower therapies on a Sunday hah, cheers CB :)
